  • Can adding a sump to my gas tank cure my fuel pressure problems? Extending the fuel return seemed to help with aeration in the tank, but the pump was still straining to pull the gas from the tank. One of these gas tank sumps should fix both problems...

    First off, i really enjoy your delivery and your channel. Your pump is what is causing the aeration. Chatter and high frequency cavitation are eating the pump more and more. Cavitation does to a pump, what detonation does to a piston, as in when the cavitation vacuum bubble collapses, it has a pinpoint of extreme pressure wave reverberations on the millisecond scale, just like detonation instead of deflagration in a cylinder, which can physically etch and shatter even the hardest metals. Since there is no con rod or anything involved, the only thing that can take the shock is the pump impellar. OR if its not cavitation, you have a one way leak in the impellar housing which would suck air, and mix it the fuel, but not leak fuel. I've actually seen that happen in reality. We diagnosed it by using a second pump, exact same model as the one we were testing, feeding into it. While both were running, it was much quieter but still chattered but differently (more on that in a few sentences) with only the known god feed pump on, it did not leak, even when plugged at the outlet) With only it on (feed pump turned off but still attached) it chattered like mad, because of the intake restriction. We took it apart, and there was an o-ring gasketed washer which had let go of one edge if the the o-ring that was supposed to be fused to it. With pressure it sealed, but with suction, it bypassed air from the outside chamber. And the chatter of your pump is also distinct. When you had your test setup, it initially started with one frequency and chatter pattern while the return ine was being squeezed by the clamp. When you released the clamp, not only did the frequency of the pump pick up, but the pattern of chatter changed. That is a resonance or disinnance issue and could be either from cavitation or air leak. Im sorry this is such a long comment.

    Dude this helps so much. I have a 1980 w150 with a big block swap and im running sniper efi. Been running into alot of the same issues you have.

    How many parts are you going to add before you replace that dying weasel of a fuel pump? There is a problem with the impeller and the motor is being overworked, you’re not getting high pressure laminar flow. The problem is literally screaming at you.

      I think the pump was being overworked from having to lift the gas out of the tank, plus the aeration caused by the return. The pump is new, since the last one failed from the clogged filter. Either way, if the pump is bad, this will help the new one (if needed) live

    Had a chance to road test yet? Having the same symptoms with similar fuel setup for my Holley Sniper on my 1970 AMC Javelin restomod. Metal tank instead of plastic like yours.
    Torn between a potential easy fix like this and major cutting and welding my tank to add an in tank fuel pump.

      None at all...works perfectly! No fuel pressure issues, no significant change in AFR, Nuthin! Workin like a champ!
