COYOTE BARKS

  • You might want to turn your speakers down. Seriously. Your dogs are going to hate you if you play this loud enough for them to hear. It's easy to do. Trust me. This was one LOUD coyote. I reduced the volume on his barks significantly, and the sound is still piercing. My frightened new rescue dog didn't like me working on this video one bit, not even at very low volume with my earphones on.
    We've been seeing lots of activity down on the new parcels, and this time of year, it's primarily coyotes passing through. I've been capturing some interesting coyote mating behavior footage lately. This is the first time I got video of a coyote barking, though, so I was happy about that. Maybe someday I'll get to capture video of a coyote or two howling? That would be even cooler!

    This clarifies it! I hear loud barking across the pond behind my house at night that moves about. I've thought coyote but now I'm sure. I need to put my trail cam out.

    I never considered the fact that a coyote barking would sound just like a dog!

      I know, Duh?
      All this time, all those dogs that sounded really close to our house were likely not dogs, but coyotes. I should have figured as much since I rarely ever pick up footage of domestic dogs on my cameras, while I always see plenty of coyotes passing through.

      Mine, neither.
      Ava was NOT happy the whole time I was trying to put this video together. Ha Ha.
      I'll never forget the one time when my new puppy was sleeping with me on a warm autumn night a few years ago. It was so nice out, I left the windows open and you could hear your typical night sounds floating inside the window. It was lovely and peaceful. But when a pack of coyotes took to howling and yipping extremely close to the house, my puppy jumped up to the head of the bed and burrowed straight into my arms, shaking. It was so precious. I got up and closed the window and turned on a noise-maker for him and he started to feel better. Poor guy!

      I'm not sure if this was simply an alarm bark (responding to dogs in the valley, perhaps?) What I think was his or her mate was following close-behind, though. I didn't include that bit of footage, but the two have been traveling close together. It's coyote mating season right now.

    Okay, video after video after video, and I have FINALLY found a noise like the one I heard while closing up the animals last night. I'm still not 100% sure it was a coyote, as that noise had kind of a raspy, honking, quality to it, like some fox barks. Either way... good thing the chickens are locked up.

      I'm amazed at the variety of sounds coming out of the coyotes. Foxes, too, since they're entering their mating season now. (As are the coyotes.)

      Yup. Most likely! -- I was surprised that what I had been hearing most of the time was not a dog after all.
      Check out this new video I posted just a couple days ago. This was the first time a coyote sat right in front of one of my cameras and made the full spectrum of coyote calls and sounds. Totally gave me goosebumps!

    Wow, never heard a coyote with that kind of voice before. Our coyotes here look different and the tone is more pitched.

    • @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
      @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. This video just features a few of the more typical barky-sounds. They make all sorts of other calls, which are much more varied in tone and sustain.
      I captured an amazing serenade of long howls and yips 2 nights ago. It was just audio that I captured on my cell-phone, but it was such a great symphony, I had to save it for possible future use. Maybe another “spooky sounds in the forest” compilation? We’ll see.

    • @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
      @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HAHA - Oh yeah. I did, too. And our dogs went nuts! Would you believe I actually reduced the volume of the coyote’s barks? I did. Perhaps I should have lowered it even more, but I suppose that would have taken away the element of surprise that comes, even despite the clearly descriptive title. Ha Ha.

    Years ago I trapped and spay/neutered 9 feral cats. A couple of months ago I heard that squawking type of barking at about 2am. I thought oh my gosh what the heck kind of dog is that. Since then there are only 4 feral cats remaining.
    The night I heard the weird barking I googled "coyote barking" and sure enough it was that same strangled/squawking sound. It didn't bark like the one in your video, it made that weird sound the entire time. I live deep in the city and we regularly have a herds of about 9 deer, foxes, raccoons etc., but I think coyotes have recently started hunting our neighborhoods.

      Yes - I think most of the ‘coyotes’ around here are hybrids, but more like coy-wolf hybrids than coy-dog. They are bigger, and ‘meatier’ than the leaner, smaller coyotes we’d see in the past.
