I love how you break everything down dummy style for people like me. I know nothing about bows but have lately been looking into it a bunch. I get bunch of my knowledge on archery from you so keep it up. Thanks
Thanks for posting these videos. My son (he's 11) shoots and took silver at Saskatchewan Provincials last weekend with a Quest Radical. I'm hoping to get myself a bow when funds allow just so he can teach me and shoot with him. You're videos have a lot of unbiased information, and you don't come across as cocky yet sound knowledgeable, which makes for a decent viewing experience. I'm glad I found your channel this morning.
That's a killer video man really informative and easy to understand! Just bought my first bow today and I am stoked to try and take down an elk in a few months! I better get practicing!
Great video. The only piece of advice I would say about buying used bows is to watch the age. If the draw length has to be adjusted by changing cams and the poundage by changing limbs you might not want to get anything over about 5 years old. Tuning parts get scarce pretty quick because the market changes so fast. The prices also tend to go up for the parts because they are scarce. I spent about a year trying to find some reasonably priced cams for an Elite Answer bow I bought. The Answer actually changed cams during the lifetime of the series so you have to watch that too. I also recommend get entire setups (bow, case, arrows, rest release etc.) Sometimes you can find a fully set up and tuned bow ready to shoot for much cheaper than you can put it together piece meal.
I just bought my first bow about a month and half ago and I love it! It's a (hoyt) reflex -excursion with trophy ridge whisker biscuit, extreme multi pin sight, true fire release, 11 high grade arrows, and case for got it all for $150 off of ebay.
I watched your video about grip torque this mourning. I’ve struggled with consistency with my arrows for a while now. I tried some of your suggestions and I was amazed my arrows were flying like darts. Thank you
I've been looking to get into archery for a while but didn't know what to look for and you have really opened my eyes to the sport. Thanks you for making such a in depth video and giving some good tips and tricks. Subscribed for sure :)
I have found your videos very informative. They have been very helpful in trying to make my voyage into the sport more successful. Thank you for posting them. I am just getting into the sport of bow hunting. I have always wanted to but just never had the time. I was looking at spending $500-800 on a mainline bow. I did a lot of reading and research about comparisons and reviews and I went to test some bows I went into it thinking I would probably choose a PSE Bruteforce/Bowmadness or a Hoyt Powermax probably sometime in the spring. I ended up buying a Diamond Deploy that same day. It wasn't even a bow on my radar until I started shooting. I shot it after shooting all the others and said this is my new bow, lol.
All of your videos are great. Thank you for catering to the novice. I'm a long time gun hunter that wants to extend my season and your videos have been very helpful in picking out a bow. The only downside are your Penn State sweaters (Penguins are OK though). OSU! On the flip side: wish I could use a real rifle in OH like you can in PA. Great stuff! Keep it up.
Finally a Hoyt hat and a Penguins jersey!!! LOL I love my buddies elite though! Definitely on my radar. Picking up a infinite edge for my 10yo son tomorrow.
i bought my first compound bow on black friday this year. its the bear archery authority :) gonna set it up for 45lbs or maybe a little more depending on how i feel when i bring it to my bow tech to get setup
Sometimes buying it sooner rather than later helps. I got my green diamond prism for around 270-290 bucks, it was later raised to 349 by Lancaster Archery Supply...and that happened in 1 or 2 months...
I have watched a number of your videos the last couple of days and really like your approach. I suffer from an extremely long draw length, 32. The first Pro Shop i went into after getting over my draw length, trotted out a $1,200 Hyott. I understand there are a limited number of long draw bows, but have started looking at used and older models. Bear Attitude is one i'm considering. Thanks for the effort.
Great info--thanks for taking the time to share your expertise. Minor suggestion: explain difference between "left hand" and "right hand" bows. I'm such an amateur, I wasn't sure which one I would need.
Jim Ru Normally a right handed person shoots a right handed bow. The bow itself is held in the left hand and drawn with the right. All the inverse is true for lefties. :)
Great video. I’ve had my Craigslist bow for quite sometime now. Point Blank The New Wave is my bow now. looking forward to a Bear Cruzer G2 bow in the near future
there are also cam and 1/2 bows that are slightly different than dual cam bows. they have a bus cable and a control cable while dual cams have two bus cables and not control cable i believe. also binary cam is not the same as dual cam and binary cams i believe are similar to cam and 1/2 in the two cams are slaved together but different system
Really enjoying the videos. Been out of archery for a lonnnnggg time and I'm looking to buy a used bow. These videos have been extremely helpful. If I could suggest one thing, if you can put links to the products you speak to in each of your videos it would help your viewers. Maybe not even links, just the product names would be even more helpful. Again, great videos.
Heavy draw weight, good. The main downside to low draw weights is unable to break bones. So, for the animals sake, shoot high as you're possibly able, comfortably, cuz we don't always make/have the perfect shot more often times than not.
only thing with amazon and eBay is to be real careful, you don't want to get something that is not going to be name brand or have a warranty. These places are great however if you know what you're looking for (I'm talking specific bow brand, specific model not generalized "I want a bow" type of search) in general also, if you ever buy a second bow, you can put all your accessories from the previous bow on to the new bow! You also want to know what parts are going to need to be replaced because even if you order a bow from Lancaster that is bare minimum for a compound, if it's in a package you're probably going to get products that were just tossed in there because the store couldn't sell them. My Diamond Prism came with a terrible "Tundra 3 pin Sight", I'm pretty sure it wasn't something that Diamond would have put into a package, and I know that Lancaster doesn't give you the Chinese Knockoff type of brands as easily as eBay, Tundra isn't even a name brand company known in the Archery Industry unless if you try to look up products! Point of matter being, be mindful of what is in a package if you want to buy a packaged bow with accessories, you might find the need to replace some of them like the reason why I needed to replace my sight and later my rest. (Whisker biscuit was fine but it was tearing my fletching off of my arrows I just fletched and it seemed annoying, whisker biscuit is still good for those who want to use them)
Hey man got an important question for ya! I found a new in box Hoyt Powermax on ebay for the same price as my local hoyt dealer. Free shipping too! Only difference is in the store id also be paying an extra $105 due to my states sales tax. The down side to the ebay bow is i dont think id be able to get hoyts warranty because they require purchase at a licensed hoyt dealer. Im brand new to archery and im wondering if the hoyt warranty is worth the extra money in my situation. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!
In my world where money never seems to flow freely, I go used, second-hand, and cheaper. :) Hoyt has always stood by their product whether new or used, and I have had them do great things for me when I purchased bows without a warranty. Now, if you have a limb break or something catastrophic like that, you're outta luck. BUT, I've shot Hoyt bows since 2005 and have never had such a major repair needed. Thankfully, the Powermax isn't a flagship $1k bow, so if there is an issue you won't be out copious amounts of cash. So I'd go with eBay for now. Save the money and don't sweat the warranty just yet..
Hello, I'd like your opinion on the Bear Cruzer please. Seems to be very adjustable. I have no clue on the draw weight or the inches setting for me. It comes as a package so the price is within my budget. I just don't know if this bow is still considered good if/when I get to be an intermediate shooter.
Also from Central PA. After shooting 2 used bows, I am buying my first new bow soon. Your thoughts on a PSE Stinger vs. the Hoyt Powermax? I have shot both and find them to have a very smooth draw. Thank you.
Great video, very informative, hey so on an unrelated topic, i'm looking for some advice on elk hunting in PA, i have no idea or even know anyone there, and so you mentioned you live in PA. i was hoping if you could give a few pointers with a fellow avid bow hunter. Thank you very much
Super Nube question: When a company quotes a speed on a bow are they assuming maximum draw weight? I’m guessing the greater the draw weight the faster the arrow.
I am very knew to archery and recently bought a new bow I really like. ( bear vast 320fps ) draw weight 40/70 24 to 30 draw lenth decked out with limbsavers and string silencers truglo 5 pin carbon xs sight trophy ridge quick shot whisker biscuit and trophy ridge 5 shoot quiver. My draw weight is currently set at 65# at 29 inch draw lenth. I paid $275.00 out the door. The set it up and said 55 pound draw weight was not enough weight for me and cranked it up to 65# now I'm kinda wondering if I should turn it back down to probably 50 or 55 pound. It's a super nice bow really smooth and super quite and I have no problem hitting my targets at 30 and 40 yards but get pretty tired after the 10th shoot. I took out a nice 6 point last season with a 55 pound draw at 47 yards ( luck shot ) but I want my bow to be more comfortable and still powerful enough to take down a nice buck. What would you recommend me to do? Btw I love you videos they've helped me so much thank you
Back that sucker off!!! If you're not enjoying shooting because of too much poundage then turn it down until it's enjoyable again! Down to 45# and I would hesitate to take a shot at a whitetail at any normal hunting distance. Under that and you need to limit your range.
Hi , what do you think about the Centerpoint Crosman eos hunter? Is it good compound bow? because here where I live is the only option I have. Thank you. I like your channel, it's very interesting. Very good vids.
Hi man and thanks for the video, i am quite new in the archery world and learnt a lot:). Could you please recommend me a cheap but good quality now in the market? Dont need more than 50 pound
Hey man, Thank you very much for all your videos and tips. I've been doing a ton of research as of late because I really want to get into the world of archery. I'm currently stumped on which bow to buy. I've looked at infinite edge, pse stinger x, a number of Bear bows, and of course Hoyt. I'm looking to get into hunting eventually but for now just target shooting. Any advice? Also, I'm left handed.. which i'm finding that left handed bows seem to be more expensive on ebay for some reason. Thanks!
Ah, the curse of being left handed! If my shooting coach when I was younger hadn't discovered my right-eye-dominance while I was shooting left handed, I'd still be in the same boat as you! All of those bows you mentioned will do the trick for you. I highly recommend you watch this video by the folks of archery talk: th-cam.com/video/L3YkQCR1l24/w-d-xo.html Shoot whatever bow you like and feels good for you. Enjoy what you have and shoot the way that works for you! :)
Thanks for the videos. What do you think about the strings that come on new bows. I just got a PSE Stinger X, which is under $400 for a complete RTS package. I plan on upgrading rest, sights, etc., as I can afford it, but should I be worried about the factory string?
Personally, save the money and shoot them until they go bad, then replace them. Most stock strings on major companies like PSE are very solid out of the gate, and won't need changed for a year or two. (Depending on the volume of how much you shoot.)
Great video, amazing. New archer here. I was looking at Craigslist as I watched. Tons of bows near me. Can you name a few things to check for to make sure it's worth it, before buying it and taking it to pro - shop. Ex: where would expensive damage to bow be, that would make it not buying it at a close to retail price. Thanks in advance. Go Pens!
I want to get into bow hunting and know little about bows and self climbing tree stands. This video helped me a lot man. I use to have a cross bow and a cheaper pse compound, but just never really got into hunting with bows or even shootings much. Do you know much about the quest G5 line? I was at cabelas the other day and saw the quest forge and it looked ready to hunt, on sale for $429. Again thanks and I hope this comment made sense I'm typing it out on my cell phone haha.
For me, if I'm buying a bow brand new off the rack, I'd shoot it first to see if you like it. So make sure you do that. With that said, I'm a BIG fan of new archers shooting single cam bows like the Forge. I also have always been impressed with Quest bows, and even more so with their parent company of G5/Prime. If you shoot it and like it, it's a great buy for less than $500. God bless and good luck.
Im 24 and would love to get into bow hunting.... Had a little used browning..... The thing exploded on me... I'm sure it was my fault... But i dont want to lose an arm and a leg to try to get into bow hunting.... What good but budget friendly bows are out there?
Good question! I would recommend a bow with higher adjustability to start out. So you can fiddle with poundage, draw length, etc. and really get it where you want it. Companies like Mission, BowTech, Bear, and Diamond make bows and package bow setups that fall in the $300-$500 range. All you need in a lot of those packages is arrows and broadheads for hunting. Hope that helps!
i am 12 years old and i love gun hunting, and i want to start to bow hunt (deer) and i was looking at the gen x bows with the kit that can adjust to 40 lbs should i get this for christmas that is right down the road.
I’ve listening too much Joe Rogan lately hahaha and he spoke about hunting and shit but you video is helping out A LOT in me wanting to purchase a compound bow. Not expect by any means but I have fired before but I do think I should be looking at Youth bows for a novice shooter. Thanks man. Hope you’re well. Covid sucks!!? Lol
I bought a Blackout SS with other googdies for $420. After calculating the prices of the goodies and subtracting it from $420, my bow only costs $123. Yey!
What do you think about the Martin krypton? I just ordered one double cam. JUST curious this will be my first compound. I am a recurve guy. Thanks for your time.
KARL Preston I have never shot the Krypton! So apologies, I can't pass judgment on it. Martin isn't a very popular brand throughout most of Pennsylvania and so I've never found myself in a situation to shoot one!
Hey so im kinda of a intermediate shooter, by that i mean i shot competition at school. do you recommend the bear cruzer? i want to be able to get used to more and more weight later on and the customization looks nice.
The Cruzer is not a bow that I have ever shot personally. It's Bear Achery's attempt to keep in the world of highly-adjustable bows like the Diamond Infinite Edge, Mission Menace, and others. I imagine it's a great bow for anyone of any skill level and it has a great company name behind it! I have shot some of the more middle and upper end Bear bows and if the Cruzer is at all anything like it's "mother ship" bows, then it'll be a sweet shooter. :) Good luck! God bless.
You're in luck! There are tons of great bows for young people out there. I have always been a fan of the budget PSE line for people starting out. Things like the Momentum, Drive, and Brute are great bows to start with. Also Bear makes great starter bows Iike the Affect and Authority. Most come ready to hunt with full accessories and are built to last. You can find these on eBay brand new! As for arrows, it's tough to go wrong with anything by Easton. I've shot their cheap and expensive lines with great success. This year will actually see the Powerflights in my quiver: the cheapest arrow they make! Hope this helps. God bless.
I was looking to get a compound bow but was hoping not to have to use a release. I have shot at a range a few times and will probably go to their pro shop to get the bow setup. Most of what I see recommend a 40 inch ata to minimize finger pinch. Any ideas without breaking the bank? New bows these days in that length seem to be high end. Any lower end in this length that you can think of? Thanks for any help, also nicely done videos.
Well you are certainly a trend setter! I don't think I've ever met a modern finger shooter with a compound! You are right, a long ATA is going to help, and unfortunately I'm unaware of anything 37" and longer that won't break the bank, and they are nowadays designed for high-end competitive archery.
@@averagejackarchery To me the release defeats the grab and go aspect of a bow. I will consider it though. I did find some sub 300 dollar Chinese compound bow package of over 40 inches, probably junk though. Thanks for the response!
I would like to.put a different perspective on this, just my opinion, but do not even think of buying Archery Kit until you have.learned to shoot, and even then buy your kit from a reputable dealer and with proper advice!
Hi Jack. I was hoping to ask you your opinion on women's bows. As your wife is an archer, I was wondering what brands/models you might look at if you were buying or updating your wife's bow? My wife is about 5'6", normal build and is interested in the sport. She can barely budge my 65lb Realm so I don't know if I should look at 40lb bows or if she could use a 50lb bow. I know you can't give recommendations on that but if you could offer your opinion on good women's bows in 2018 I'd be very appreciative. Thanks very much Jack. Any advice you felt comfortable offering would be most appreciated.
For the sake of your wife's shoulder, I'd stay with a 40# bow, or a bow that's 40-50# and keep it cranked down. No real need for anything over that weight. I know of a lot of gals like liked the BowTech Eva Shockey editions, Mathews Jewel was a favorite and now the Avail is widely liked, the Elite Spirit was a very solid offering and now Elite simply makes a lot of their bows suitable for both men and women, they just have limbs all the way down to 40 max. All the mid-level bows from the major companies will have options suitable for your wife, but I think the biggest thing for any archer, in particular a smaller-stature one, is overall bow weight. Forget the draw weight and focus on the weight that she'll be lugging around the range, 3D course, and woods. If that get's tiresome and unwieldy, then it's not the right bow for her. Hope this helps!
Hi. Thank you so very much for replying. This helped immensely!!!! I can't thank you enough. I'll definitely check out the bows you've recommended. Love your vids. You and Sean are my favorite archery/hunting vid producers. Please keep them coming. And again, thank you Very much!!
That is a conundrum! My suggestion is becoming a member of Archery Talk forum and not only be able to find a lefty bow, but also become a member of a great learning resource!
Hi Average Jack Archery! I have a random question. What kind of basic tools do you use when you work on your bows? I'm starting out in archery and a bit curious as to what goes into taking care of them as well as eventually doing my own upgrades :) Cheers
Full transparency, I'm not a fan of CX arrows. Nothing against the company, but the backwards spine numbers and the idea of incorporating multiple spines is a little....off sounding to me.
Greetings from Denmark... thanks for sharing :) great approach :) If the choice was between PSE Brute Force 2016 and Hoyt ZRX 2016...what would you go for ? stay safe.
And greetings from the USA! If you're buying it from a shop and have the opportunity to shoot both, you HAVE to do that. I'm not brand loyal; I've shot and liked them all in their own ways. But there were times where buying one over the other was a matter of how it felt to shoot, not the looks or price tag. If you're not shooting first and money isn't an issue, I'd go with the Hoyt. Phenomenal customer service and they are just nice bows to tune, shoot, and hunt with. God bless.
Hehe...yeah the brand-loyalty can go a bit overboard in my opinion :) although you cant outrun facts when it comes down to it :) non the less thanks for the reply, the Hoyt was the one in the lead, and it does helps a little with some input from people that actually seems to "keep it real" happy hunting and stay safe. Best reguards Thomas.
What do you think about Quest? Specifically the Quest Storm. I'm a guy and i know that bow is geared towards women or smaller dudes like myself. I'm only 5'6".
Quest is made by G5 which also makes Prime bows and the quality of both Quest and Prime are perhaps second to none in their respective categories in my opinion. The storm and other single-cam Quest bows I have never shot, but having shot Prime bows and knowing how G5 makes phenomenal equipment with great customer service to back up their reputation, I don't see how you could go wrong!
Hi Jack, I'm checking compound bows on Craigslist. I honestly don't know how to check if a compound bow is still good like it's age or how it feels. I'm a total beginner, so please give me as many tips as possible. Thanks!
Hai Kieu Check out my video on compound bow maintenance and the other about buying a used compound bow. Everything I look for when buying a bow is in those two videos. :)
You're extremely well spoken, coherent, and probably really intelligent. Thanks for the vid man!
Thank you so much! You should see the hours of footage that gets edited out. It's not so intelligent. God bless!
Average Jack Archery lol you should make a blooper video for us
Average Jack Archery Jack, I just got a left over Bear authority at a bomb ass price. I'm stoked, but I'd like advice on arrow picks.

Thanks again and cheers mate !

I just stumbled upon this old gem. LOL. You have come a long way buddy.
Isn't it hilarious?! To think folks listened to that rambling buffoon.
When I was looking for a video to watch on this topic, totally picked this one because of the Penguins hoodie 👍🏼🐧

Chuck Holton For those super long draw lengths Bear has definitely been the front runner. Good find!
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for.
Great job.
Thank you! This was extremely helpful and stopped me from taking some bad advice from a friend of mine. Great job!
Possibly the best introduction to compounds I have seen.
Great work mate.
Seth Greenhill Thanks so much! God bless.
Thank you for this video. In the next couple of months, I want to buy a bow and arrow set. -a fan who shared in Chicago!

These are truly great videos. As a beginner I really appreciate you taking the time to do this.
The pleasure is definitely all mine. Glad I could help another novice get into the sport!
I appreciate your honesty and knowledge of tips.
Great video. I’ve had my Craigslist bow for quite sometime now. Point Blank The New Wave is my bow now. looking forward to a Bear Cruzer G2 bow in the near future
Im searching since an hour for a good video. And now i finally found it!

(Whisker biscuit was fine but it was tearing my fletching off of my arrows I just fletched and it seemed annoying, whisker biscuit is still good for those who want to use them)
Great video, it was alot of help for me when I got my new bow
I'm a big strong guy and my bow is only set to 50 lbs. I LOVE IT!
Drink Bud Ice but beware of the Penguins!!! Go Pens!!! Good video. 👍🏻😎
Hoyt has always stood by their product whether new or used, and I have had them do great things for me when I purchased bows without a warranty. Save the money and don't sweat the warranty just yet..
im getting the infinite edge pro and its really smooth with a solid back wall
I started with a bow from a pawn shop and eventually upgraded to a pse stinger x.
William Cavender thinking about buying a bow from a pawn shop also
So glad I stumbled across your channel. Subbed and liked. I'm getting into archery and this was extremely helpful. Thanks a lot!
Don’t forget to check pawn shops, i got an older hoyt compound for $25
awesome video sir.. very helpful to the would be hobbyists.
cam hanes 90lbs pull ultimate predator keep hammering!!!!!!!!!
I'm glad I watched this b4 I went shoping. Cheers mate
Thank you for sharing ✅
Your a ton of help, great explanation for everything I want to know.....you got another sub from me and I will be watching all your video's !
Hit the like button for the pens hoodie alone, good info thanks dude.
Thank you very much
great job , thanks for a tips
Super Nube question: When a company quotes a speed on a bow are they assuming maximum draw weight? I’m guessing the greater the draw weight the faster the arrow.
Good question! IBO speed is measured by shooting the bow at 70# 30" draw and shooting a 350grain arrow.
Thank you for the great video.
Great video, keep making more.
Great video. Are you aware of any 2-3 year old Hoyt/Mathew Bows which would be a good used bow in 2019?
Check out my used bow buying guide!
Hey man,
Thank you very much for all your videos and tips.
I highly recommend you watch this video by the folks of archery talk: th-cam.com/video/L3YkQCR1l24/w-d-xo.html
Shoot whatever bow you like and feels good for you. Enjoy what you have and shoot the way that works for you! :)
Thanks great info
thanks man. this really helped me get started.
Just bought my first bow, topoint serenity 2018, was it a good buy?
Go Pens!
Great Job!
Yeah , great info
Surprised you didnt mention to get the right spine arrow for the poundage of the bow. Otherwise excellent video
Tip get a green screen or sheet to cover the pipes lol
Ty Pinnix From your age and likely draw length and draw weight (40 max is a great place to be) I think it's a great idea! God bless.
Thanks for the video! What’s the classifieds site in PA you referred to? I’m in Chester County, looking for my first bow
Google "Rennug Classifieds". It's the new PennsWoods Classifieds. Same layout though.
@@averagejackarchery thank you!
Lol
Only if you're closer to "youth sized".
Thanks for your reply
What's that thing at the middle of the string
The D-loop? It's what you clip a mechanical release into in order to draw and fire the bow. Hope that helps!
Thank you brother
God bless.
Hey I am 13 and I am going bow hunting this month and i was wondering if i could get any suggestions on a bow and arrows? Thanks!
God bless.
Thanks.God bless.
Very impressed! Just subscribed.
My problem is I'm a left handed shooter and definitely like drawing a bow left handed and I can't find a used one anywhere.
That is a conundrum! My suggestion is becoming a member of Archery Talk forum and not only be able to find a lefty bow, but also become a member of a great learning resource!
Hi Average Jack Archery! I have a random question. What kind of basic tools do you use when you work on your bows? I'm starting out in archery and a bit curious as to what goes into taking care of them as well as eventually doing my own upgrades :)
Cheers
Thembi Audet I have a video on just that subject! th-cam.com/video/WdbKExpjSkE/w-d-xo.html
Hey jack what do you think about the carbon express mayhem ds 250 dual spine ? It's a 400 spine .
Full transparency, I'm not a fan of CX arrows. Nothing against the company, but the backwards spine numbers and the idea of incorporating multiple spines is a little....off sounding to me.
Greetings from Denmark... thanks for sharing :) great approach :)
If the choice was between PSE Brute Force 2016 and Hoyt ZRX 2016...what would you go for ?
Glad that I could be of service! Enjoy the sport!
You to sir.
The storm and other single-cam Quest bows I have never shot, but having shot Prime bows and knowing how G5 makes phenomenal equipment with great customer service to back up their reputation, I don't see how you could go wrong!
thanks for the reply.
Thx for the info !!!
