    When I started, getting the double drop on point you really had to know the tracks like the back of your hand... to be able to see the full waveform in software is extremely helpful, definitely saves from some trial and error

      Beatjump eliminates trial and error on the digi side, getting familiar with how fast the stylus travells across a record (assuming you can see the grooves) can be very helpful on the analog side. Obviously there is some variance with the latter depending on volume levels but you can still get a feel for it.

      Yeah I'm an old school happy hardcore vinyl dj from the 90's, just bought and set up a ddj400 and downloaded a load of dnb and 140, can still beat match after all these years and picked up the bars and phrases with hardcore straight away but can't get the timings with the double drops. Only about 15 hours in so will keep trying

    The secret is knowing your tunes, knowing the drops, reading the vinyl grooves or wave visual.
    Knowing what tunes go well, realising that vocal into vocal is not a good option 😂
    And then just practise ❤️

    Thanks for the great tutorial. Double dropping is one of my favourite techniques to add more spice, energy and tension to my mixes. I use it a lot in my dirty progressive psytrance sets :) However, what I like to do is always create some space for the other track, either by using the hpf/lpf or by pushing the mids and highs a bit lower on both tracks, also changing them during the build-up to add extra tension and release. In my experience, the mixes sound cleaner, the volumes are better matched and you can hear what is going on in the tracks better.

    Seems there’s a new name for everything. 😂 What is explained here is what I fundamentally consider to be...well...DJing. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    BITD (25+ years ago), I relied on my track knowledge, phrasing and also looking at the upcoming vinyl groove patterns in front of the needle (the reason for those turntable pop-up lights kids! 😂) to achieve what is referred to here as a "double drop". Once tracks were saddled in, techniques such as transforming (using the channel’s line selector), cutting, chopping etc added the creative spice to the dish.

  • @Kid_Ellipsis

    Nice examples. My .02: find tracks that really speak to each other and use this technique sparingly. This was so much harder back in the vinyl days but you’ve really got your pick of the lot now - it should surprise and delight the listener. Blow a mind or two by cutting to an unexpected third track with an energy shift and then stab the first two back on their accents with the channel faders. Dialogue man.

  • @EricBishard
    @EricBishard หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’ve done things similar to this, but I really like the idea that the outgoing track, we don’t have to keep the drop, we can hot cue back to a less busy section of the track before removing it.

    9:32 sounds hard in fairness, but EQ is king when doubling two major drops. In fact filter mixing is way better if you have a habit of double dropping tunes.
    Vocals are so good for it too.
    Also, am I the only one who gets OCD when seeing people not set beat grids? Anyone can play how they want obvs, just I am a bit too obsessed with beat grid setting.

    As a 20+ year DJ mainly DnB / Breakbeat.......... A "double drop" just sounds like (and I mean no disrespect)....... mixing. Working 2 tracks together, on beat, in phrase / key, and riding it till ..... probably the breakdown or the next 16 for another layer to come in on the 2nd record / track. Is that correct ?
    I've just never heard it called that. It just sounds like mixing is being described to me tbh.

    4:30 - What is your method for placing markers at 64 (or any amount of) beats before a drop? How do you figure out where it’s 64 beats before a drop? Are you counting backwards from the drop or can the software figure this out? It would be very cool and I assume totally possible for you to place a marker at the drop itself and then press a button that jumps back 64 (or any amount of) beats to where you can then place that marker.

    • @kazzzzzzza
      @kazzzzzzza 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you go into rekord box on your laptop you can open up a song in performance mode, go to the drop. Then find the tab with hot cues, select beat jump tab, scroll across to 64 (or however many beats you want) and select forwards or backwards that many beats. This saves SOOO much time and I wish I knew it sooner. Goodluck

  • @TheAuxBandit
    @TheAuxBandit 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Surely switching to a cue point on the drop will make your mix not beatmatched because your timing will rarely be 100% perfect. Or are we playing in sync mode here?

    • @evanmassimino3416

      If you adjust your gains ahead of time there's no need to mess with them live. I either filter out the secondary track a bit, or lower the eq's and volume just a tad. So the primary track can shine

    I use double drops already but wanted to watch for some tips. I loved the Chase and Status one where you switch back to the drum buildup as the double drop instead of the actual drop itself. Gonna look for ways to experiment with this now. Just one question - do you set some kind of quantize on those cue points or are you just good at hitting it at exactly the right moment without having to make beat alignment adjustments?

    • @djdannyjamesuk

    Because I mix dnb predominantly using the bpm slider usually takes far to long when I’m trying to go for things like doubles, switches or triples as I usually have my hotcues set 16 beats before the drop, I know how to beat match because with stuff like house and garage it’s not as quick. But dnb I struggle and have to use sync else I’ll miss the queen points. How do you change the bpm quicker than the bpm slider?

      It's not ideal. While 2 tracks could be perfectly in key it's still possible for basslines to cancel each other out if they aren't in phase. Having said that it can occasionally sound good doing this but generally isn't reccomended.

  • @alexp5008

    But how tf he know that its 64 beats away from the drop? Can i move certain beats away from a cue? and how?

    • @waylandsmith
      @waylandsmith ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few ways. If you're familiar enough with your gear you can eyeball it. There are bar lines in the waveform every 4 beats. With a lot of setups, there is also a special highlighted bar line every 4 bars (16 beats). He's also using the "beat jump" controls to move around. They move the play head exactly a set number of beats. 16 beats (4 bars) is common, since that's the minimum length of a musical phrase in a lot of genres. So you just find the drop point and hit the "beat jump" button backwards 4 times. 16 x 4 = 64 beats.

    13:50 This is terrible advice. Its far better to remember all of your tracks yourself. Force yourself to really know your music instead of having the computer handling it for you. That way you get to be a DJ instead of a “end user”.
