    Sue and Carl did a great job. A very insightful discussion of the HVAC system of the Model S Plaid. As an old HVAC tech, I couldn't agree more about the importance of improved indoor air quality. Explanations of the material science, sound attenuation and air distribution were outstanding. You're OK too Sandy, for an old guy.

      Even the Model 3 has more filtration than that, it actually has 2 pretty standard air filters like that one, they sit on top of each other in a very awkward to reach place in the center console area beside the footwell on the passenger side. (Or driver's side for RHD vehicles)

      The MACH-E filtration system is exactly where OEMs and OEM ENGINEERS could give a rats ass about air quality. They never sweat the details. Instead, they throw in a Menards filter in there and call it good. This gives the OEMs and their chrony dealships to charge their customers a premium for crap filters.

    Carl and Sue are exceptional, especially the way they work together. On a separate issue of winding the rotor with carbon fibre, it was my understanding that the filaments were wound under tension. Sandy, can you explain how similar levels of tension could be achieved with a pre woven sleeve? Thanks to all of you.

    • @glennedwards1449
      @glennedwards1449 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My very uneducated guess is that it is not a pre woven sleeve. They have throw out the machine that winds the carbon fibre onto the motor in favour of one that actually weaves it directly onto the motor. Another guess is that the weave is strong enough that it is not required.

    • @ZipZoomZip
      @ZipZoomZip 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the photo Sandy has is probably an early prototype that didn't work out. Thus it was necessary to build the winder. You can see some radial witness marks where the rotor sleeve diameter was probably measured while spinning at high speed to determine the amount of growth.

    Important (unfortunately) practical consideration for cabin filtration that was not mentioned, wildfires and smoke. Where we have seen wildfires in Colorado and California in particular, being able to safely drive out of the area in your vehicle with protection from the smoke in the air is of great benefit.

    • @GilmerJohn
      @GilmerJohn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know about Tesla, but generally speaking the "cabin filters" in cars are close to trash. There is just no reason today what the standard couldn't be MERV-16 filtering which is the equivalent of an N-95 mask. That will get rid of a LOT of stuff to include much/most smoke. The only thing to add might be some "activated carbon/charcoal" to take up any organic vapors.

    • @cybertruckfuture
      @cybertruckfuture 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@GilmerJohn Tesla uses HEPA filter with carbon and positive pressure in cabin to do the job. There is a video from Tesla on TH-cam where they used a colored smoke canister and fired it off in a bubble around the car and watched how the car kept it all out.

    • @liarzdice

      In my household's ICE cars that will bow out to a Tesla Model Y one day, I by FRAM Fresh Breeze cabin air filters that have much thicker material and baking soda too. FRAM claims 98% filtration rate. Mach-E owners should upgrade their filters now. Ford should put better ones in too.

    Carbon fibre tube with a seam? I've not commented on the knitted carbon fibre thing but would have expected the tight bound radial to have had the centrifugal [?] forces better contained. Very hard to fit a knitted tube at the same binding pressure. I wonder if that photo Sandy was sent was a bit of fun? Time will tell I guess. A great video as usual, thanks for the most excellent presentation.

    • @toddmarshall7573
      @toddmarshall7573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. Tesla was wrapping on that fiber a revolution at a time...the length of the motor. That gives enormous strength against centrifugal force tendencies. You can't do that with a mesh. A mesh would do nothing at all. And if back forth was an issue, Tesla would have done a two pass wrap with a counteracting bias. It's not an issue. There is no lateral force. Sandy got gamed!

    • @mriguy3202
      @mriguy3202 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toddmarshall7573 i guess you could photoshop it but one thing that's obvious is that these Tesla engineers are very clever and have been given permission to continually improve. If there is a way to, for example, put a tube mesh over the motor and then stretch it down then they have tried it. It would seem to be faster and cheaper and may deliver sufficient strength.

    What an interesting look at the normally unseen spells you engineering wizards spin. In 2018 the wildfire smoke blanketing the Puget Sound region around Seattle triggered a severe asthma attack for my wife who had no history of breathing difficulty. After three days of hospitalization and heavy prescription steroid maintenance doses (which took a year to eliminate) my search began for a vehicle that would protect her from adverse air conditions while traveling. It quickly became clear that the only truly effective HEPA level passenger car air filtration was in the Tesla Model S or Model X. We bought a 2019 Model X and are amazed at how outside smells (diesel exhaust, dairy farm odor, etc.) remain undetectable inside the car. Mostly, we can now travel with the security of knowing that she will remain safe if we encounter smoke, dust storms, or other air pollution that might otherwise cause an asthma relapse. Thanks to Tesla and Elon Musk, our journeys and explorations continue. Jess

    What a well organized presentation. Some of the videos are (intentionally) an unprepared first impression and this is a nice contrast.

    As others have said, Carl and Sue did good job explaining things to the non-engineers out there. I like this channel because no one is afraid of criticizing what they don’t like or praising what they do. Hopefully this analysis is helpful to Tesla and other manufacturers. There’s always room for improvement !

    The downside off these integrated air wents is that all dust will be blown on the backside of the cristal clear plastic. Static electricity will only atract dust. And it will say there for ever. Within some years you will see a thin layer of dust blocking the view from the display. Older BMWs had this problem at the odometer.
    And abaut the wents from the old OEM's.( especialy mercedes ) they still have hairdryers :-)
    Those plastic tubes are a pain in the ..... to get them right. PET is way better.

      The air is exceptionally filtered, so hopefully, there will not be any dust buildup. I'll have to let you know in a few years! I don't think any other manufacturer has any level of cabin air filtration similar to Tesla.

    • @ADOENDRA
      @ADOENDRA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tesla_tap I hope you are right. But the other cars do not have airflow inside the odometer. Yes the air filters are top. Only problem is you as a person will brief dust inside of the car. Yes ,please let me know. And don't worry I'm a TESLA tech fan.

      You don't get dust buildup if you're circulating HEPA filtered positive pressure air. Added a little filter/fan box to an optical instrument back in University to stop dust buildup that made it slowly break down.

    • @ADOENDRA

      @@martylawson1638 The HEPA filter is a option.
      I guess we have to wait and see.

    Sandy just discovered comment trolls at 73-I was lucky enough to find out about them while in my 50s. Sandy, a word of advice from a fellow old man; don't bother feeding those TH-cam comment trolls! 🤣

    An exemplary '101 class' that informed me about quite a few general questions I had about how IPs are assembled and what's under there. Seeing the effort Tesla continues to execute in eliminating parts and assemblies is a pleasure. It demonstrates that there are people and companies out in the world that really do practice what was preached in the college textbooks and by a minority of experts. Successfully doing it pays huge dividends over time. Please continue the education of 'how it can be done.'

    Watch everyone of your videos and really appreciate the deep dive and details you provide. My Model Y to arrive shortly will be the first car I'll own that I know more about how and why it was designed, assembled and what it's made of than any product I've purchased before.
    One detail that would allow me to enjoy your videos more is for your editor to insert a volume envelope and manually equalize the audio.
    I'm wearing out the volume on my remote especially of the recent Plaid S video with 4 contributors and thjs one as well.
    Thanks
