Hey, thx man, this was great dude. I only got 7min in before I got distracted just jamming. Wife was watching something on Instagram that played the James Bond theme and then I had to play that 5-b6-6 thing and wow, that was perfect for this exercise. Started jamming away on this cool 1- 5 - 1 - b6 - 1 - 6 - 1 - b6 - 1 - 5 groove thing, then threw some of these licks in there based on the Dorian Scale, plus some lydian #4 stuff, sometimes it became more of a Minor Blues b5 depending on the phrasing, but man, this was such a blessing. I absolutely just reached one of those milestone type improvements thx to this.
Hi Dan,great lesson.I've been a NIN fan for years yet never knew Pino played with them.I saw a video by Joe Hubbard who's teaching's a bit too advanced for my taste but he told of his relationship with Pino who came to him for lessons after he was an established pro.He explained that even with Joes' opinion of him being an outstanding bass talent he wanted to understand what and why he played what he did.This began a lengthy learning relationship.He's one of the greats but refused to rest on his laurels.
joe hubbard is a hot dog...great player but trying to learn from watching is crazy...dan is easy to understand, and definitely knows whats going on...great stuff
I learned some things from one of Joe Hubbard's videos, and I could already play and I am infinitely funkier than he'll (and many of these cats cat) ever be, but, I still learned something from it. Sometimes, you have to watch these TH-cam lessons multiple times to get it and play along with them, just like practicing alone....., it's all about repetition. I mean, you may discover after you've learn "it" that "it" was not for you...,but..., you learned it and it can still be useful without you realizing it.
For many singers, composers, producers etc... the bass player is only the bass player. All they need is a well behaved doggy submitted professional musician laying down a decent bass line, maybe with a grain of salt but mostly maybe not, and that's it. As for credits, no no, the attention, limelight and money all channel to the singer, composer & producer. That's the way it goes...
Great lesson, Dan! I always enjoy hearing you play! I watched a Joe Hubbard video where he said he taught Pino harmony and playing with chord tones back in the 80's, so I don't think I'd be going out on a limb to say that Pino knew about modes 35 to 40 years ago.
Thanks! I'm not sure how many lessons he had but I remember an interview where he said he knows what notes fit without necessarily knowing lots of theory. He's not a 'schooled' player and he doesn't read a note. Doesn't stop him though!
@@OnlineBassCourses Right. It is like you have said several times, don't just play a scale up and down. Pick notes and sequences and make music with it. It's a great idea Matt and I have thought of it. I'm not sure the best format for that though. TH-cam or Twitch (or similar?). I'd love to do something weekly like this in the future. Any ideas welcome!
Dorian is a minor tonality and Lydian is a major tonality but Dorian isn’t the natural minor scale and Lydian isn’t the major scale (if that’s what you meant??).
Maybe, but I’m not a hundred percent sure he does, based off countless articles and interviews I’ve read and seen. Happy to be corrected as always! Where did you find that out?

I knew about Pino taking lessons from Joe. It’s very inspiring that even he wants to keep learning.

Pino doesn't get the Credit he deserves he's all over that D'Angelo black Messiah, Erykah Badu, John Mayer,nine inch nails he can play with anybody
He's the bass players' player.

I've always wondered about mixing major and minor scales on a groove like this. Although it sounds good to me it might drive perfectionists loco?

Oh I see, fair enough. The action sounds like very low, strings are very easily clanging against the frets...

Are you switching between major and minor?
Dorian is a minor tonality and Lydian is a major tonality but Dorian isn’t the natural minor scale and Lydian isn’t the major scale (if that’s what you meant??).
