When, in December 2008, six decades into his illustrious career, Alfred Brendel bade farewell to an emotional Viennese audience, it was not a “full stop”, as it may have appeared at that moment. Rather a “semicolon”. With more time on his hands, the celebrated pianist went on to focus on other activities - writing (essays on music, poetry), giving lectures, leading masterclasses. In January 2021, Brendel will celebrate his 90th birthday, possessing profound knowledge and experience, as well as a great zest for learning new things. And also a sense of humour, which he has often turned against himself. Precious few pianists have influenced the perception and performance of music as much as Brendel has. He was the first to have recorded the complete Beethoven piano works, he succeeded in bringing Franz Schubert’s music back to the concert stage, among other achievements. Of late, Brendel has often visited Prague to give lectures and masterclasses at the Rudolfinum, highlights of which are captured on the present DVD. Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert are the figures he, as a pianist, treasures most. The autobiographical lecture My Musical Life provides the viewer with a glimpse of the universe full of paradox that gave rise to the legend called Brendel - unveiling the sources of his inspiration, education and artistry, that which formed his vision of the world. The DVD affords the rare opportunity to meet the living legend.

Velmi osobní setkání s Alfredem Brendelem
Když se Alfred Brendel v prosinci 2008 před dojatým vídeňským publikem loučil po 60 letech s kariérou klavíristy, nebyla to "tečka", jak se v tu chvíli zdálo. Spíše "středník". Uvolněnou kapacitu Brendel investoval do dalších svých "životů" - psaní (hudebních esejů a poesie), přednášení, vedení mistrovských kursů. V lednu 2021 vstupuje do svých devadesátých let - se zkušeností hodnou jeho věku, ale i s chutí poznávat a učit se, která by vydala na další život. A také s humorem, který nezřídka obrací k sobě samému. Málokterá osobnost ovlivnila interpretaci a vnímání hudby jako právě Brendel. Jako první natočil celé Beethovenovo klavírní dílo, podařilo se mu na koncertní pódia vrátit hudbu Franze Schuberta atd. V posledních letech se stále vracel do Prahy a z jeho přednášek a masterclass v Rudolfinu vzniklo i předkládané DVD. Beethoven, Mozart a Schubert jsou jména nejsilněji spjatá s Brendelem - klavíristou. V autobiografické přednášce Můj hudební život pak divákovi dává nahlédnout do světa plného paradoxů, z něhož povstala legenda jménem Brendel - odkrývá zdroje své inspirace, svého vzdělání, umění a vidění světa. Osobní setkání s živoucí legendou je dar, kterého se nám tu dostává.

​@@tarikeld11 Brendel was still playing in 2008 (or was just about to retire). In fact, I think he gave the lectures in 2019 and 2020 during his visit to Prague.
