    Hi Alex, I've been a longtime follower of your channel. At the age of 27, I made the uneasy decision to switch to IT. I was always wondering what I had to do to land a new job, and your videos helped me a lot. I started working on projects and studied essential skills. Especially, I created my resume according to your advice, and BOOM... I found my first job. In the interview, my boss said that he was impressed by how I wrote my CV-very clear and to the point. So, thank you so much. I really appreciate what you have done!

    Hi Alex, thanks for your contents. In my experience, there is no universal rules, it depends on the country you live in. In Italy, for example, the personal picture is almost mandatory. The recruiters want your photo because they use it to remember you (this is what they say).

    According to on the resume expert, we are supposed to have three resumes for three different purpose. 1. For job boards: Resumes are selected by recruiters with help of ATS, scanners which uses frequency of keywords to select about top 'x' (i.e. 25) resumes. This means a resume with more keywords with high frequencies has higher probability to be one of those 'x' resumes. That means it could be 4 pages long. 2. For human: When recruiters or HR contacts you, send them a one page resume but very easy to read and follow. 3. For job interview: Take a single page resume, but designed as a marketing material as presentation with key achievements. I would appreciate your comments on them.

    A big caution with a lot of the resume templates in this video is they all have some form of columns in how they're formatted. While they may look great to a recruiter or hiring manager once you get an interview, most job applications are going to be submitted online and uploaded to an applicant tracking system (ATS). For those that utilize uploading an electronic document (Word or PDF), the ATS is going to have a hard time distinguishing different areas in columns. This may result in have to clean up or simply enter manually all the information the ATS is looking for like contact information, skills and work experience.

    • @chianeperry2464

      If I may ask do you think a pdf might be easier or no

    • @EldhoseJoseph
      @EldhoseJoseph ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chianeperry2464 pdf is always better than Doc files as ur formatting remains intact, if it's acceptable.
      But that's irrelevant to the main comment of ATS. If u have columns in resume, irrespective of pdf or Doc, it will be hard for ats.

    • @chefernandez563
      @chefernandez563 ปีที่แล้ว

      ATS depends on the company you're applying to, so if you're applying to big companies like Google and amazon they most likely have ATS due to the high volume of applications they receive

      I think Microsoft Certifications are one of the few certifications I actually think are worth it. I don't think they're necessary, but to some employers they are a big deal. To others they're not very important, but it can demonstrate that you know the skill and a commitment to learn which is something employers do look for.

    I slightly disagree with the skill bar way of showing how proficient one is. I saw a video from Joshua Fluke where he argues that different people use different parameters to evaluate their skills. So what does a 75% filled bar mean? How different is it from a 80% filled one? How do you quantify this? Also, perhaps employers could look at a non-100% filled bar and say: "if he is not even secure about his skill set, why should we hire them?" or they might not see a 75% filled bar as enough, even though your intention was to show you have a good grasp, but still has some room to improve, for example. I don't know, just felt like noting this because I like the concept and how it looks in the resume, but I think the disadvantages of the interpretation behind it outweigh the advantages.

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I definitely see what you're saying. I have had several people put this on resumes and when I was in the interview with them (since they seemed to have everything I was looking for) I asked them to explain their proficiency in these skills and why they rated themselves at certain levels. I personally have no problem with it and I liked how it looked. I completely agree that there is some ambiguity in it. That could be considered subjective as everyone's perception of the level of skill is different. The other ways noted in this video may be better for most, but wanted to offer a different option. Thanks for the feedback.

    • @Mahj111
      @Mahj111 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty straightforward - people like to use paterns. That's why in most of the companies you have tiers for your job experience for example. You can always ask someone who used it on his resume what does it mean but for most people 1/5 means that I've just grasped some idea, 2/5 I'm comfortable in some areas but still haven't grasped all of the possibilities with the tool, 3/5 means that you're intermediate, you've used something more than just basic SQL inserts at work or you know the complexity of Python and you know that you can use it for webscraping/data manipulation/web services developement with some training, 4/5 means that you're advanced in some field, you know all of the capabilities and you can work with whatever your employer gives you as a task and complete your work in a very short amount of time and 5/5 means that you're an expert (also revognised within the community) and if someone's hiring you can ask for 150k+ salary.
      It's pretty straightforward and if you don't know what you're talking about your technical interviewer will quickly notice that. And they WILL ask you about the skills you've put into your resume no matter how you've put them there (bars or text, whatever). Yes, just like Alex I'm Data Analyst working for Fortune 500 company for a few years now.
