When I was in eighth grade (1989-90), at lunch the kids played outside of the school after eating. The principal would ring a bell and all of the kids would line up by homeroom (in a KI-8) school. One day, our teacher was out there to walk in with our homeroom (normally, the teachers were inside). For some reason, our teacher was singing this song (only loud enough for a few of us in the front of the line to hear). So, I think of her when I hear this song. RIP Mrs. O.
I remember hearing this when I was a little girl. Grew up with Frankie Valli and The Four Season. "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" is one of my favorites. Always reminds me of a little kitten I lost, got run over in our driveway and this song came on the radio. Always reminds me of pretty face jr.
Yes, please definitely do “Sherry,” “Rag Doll,” “Dawn,” “Let’s Hang On,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”! All great hits! The Four Seasons are good seasoning during any season! 👍
I was about 6 or 7 when this song came out. I grew up with one sister 7 years older than me, and I loved all of the songs that came out of her radio and record player. I wanted to be a teenager so bad before I was even 10 years old. The 60s was an exciting time for music, and I never dreamed that I could be hearing it again for the first time through the ears of a younger generation. Thank you for your honest reactions and insightful comments!❤👍
We would visit my grandparents in about '64 and they would take us up to the Highland Lake to a resort in the summer. Very Dirty Dancing type setting. And they were on the jukebox in the barn all the time. Memories. ❤
I grew up with the 4 Seasons.Just before the Beatles 'broke', it was them and the Beach Boys. I was breaking into my teen years and these groups along with the British Invasion groups that followed, were "my music"
honestly until the late 60's no one even knew where Vietnam even was on a map yet.. let along fighting in a war over there. and this is why: its because we weren't fighting over there yet. we did send over army equipment and some adviser to try to help them out. but our kids were not fighting there, so no one cared. this song came out way before that in 1963. the Vietnam era was still about 5 years away. and it def was not in the 1950's. the 50's and early 60's were still innocent, quite, and peaceful for the most part. and the music reflected that because the music was still innocent and simple at the time. and so did TV shows for what its worth. they were simple and innocent too you could even swear on any show in the 50's thru the 70's if u did you would never work again. and thats why there us cable now. cable channels started so people could swear, be dirty, and show dirty sexy movies. thats how HBO got started. true story!!
"Can't Take My Eyes Off You," "Who Loves You," and "My Eyes Adored You" are hits closer in time to "December 1963." That's the later era, which is what I like. Also, I'm sure Sam knows "Grease," which is from the later era.
Great group, and Franki Valli's falsetto is iconic .. Their first 3 singles all went to No.1, and this was the 2nd of them .. While I like this one a whole lot, IMHO the other 2 were even better .. "Sherry" ( their debut single ) and "Walk Like A Man" ( their third ) are absolutely fantastic, and you really need to hit them soon .. Nice reaction !
Your commentary on this song was excellent and loved seeing your reactions to a big hit from 62 years ago! Nick Massi (original 4 Seasons bass singer/bass player) was also a guru when it came to vocal arrangements. If you check out the band's hits from 1962-65, you'll hear some phenomenal vocals, along with the Gaudio/Crewe team as co-writers, and of course Valli's unique vocals. Looking forward to watching your other segments!
The Four Seasons were before and during the British Invasion of the Beatles, etc. They were huge and continued way after the Beatles were done as a group. Frankie Valli sang the Grease Theme Song and still performs to this day. Watch the Jersey Boys to learn of their history and the pain of losing his daughter depicted in Jerseys Boys. Great movie and play.
Always loved Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. They had such a distinctive style of music. They have more great songs to listen to as others have commented. Someone mentioned their song Let's Hang On which was one I have not heard in years and worth reacting to.
Finally some classic 4 Seasons. Rag Doll, Dawn, Opus #17, Beggin and Big Man in Town are favorites. Sherry, Big Girls and Walk Like A Man were the first three releases, ALL went to #1.
~ My favorites are Walk Like A Man, Dawn (Go Away I’m No Good For You), Big Man In Town. They had a good many top hits, but their biggest was Rag Doll ~
My first band I ever saw in concert, 1966 Steel Pier in Atlantic City, NJ. My favorite songs of theirs wasn't any of their big hits, "Soon", "The Proud One", "The Girl I'll Never Know"
There are Soooooooooooooooooooooo many great Four Seasons songs. These guys are one of the biggest acts in music history having sold nearly 400 million records. Check out some great songs like "C'mon Marianne", "Let's Hang On", "Working My Way Back to You", "Big Man in Town", "Rag Doll", "Tell It to the Rain", "Little Boy (In Grown Up Clothes", and dozens more.
This was in 1962,and you can see the progression in other songs: Sherry,Dawn and they were one of the few groups to keep the Beatles off No. 1 for a few weeks
Hey guys, stay the course. Keep going with these guys because you probably got something like 2 dozen unbelievably great songs as good as this 1 and 1963.
Eastwood made a good movie based on the history of Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons. Titled "Jersey Boys." Just about any song by these guys is good. Their semi-comeback song in 1975 ... Who Loves You ... is one of their best.
I have been performing on stage since I was 6 years old. I perform comedy, magic and music to this day (at the age of 69). Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons were favorites of mine when I was a kid and I learned to sing falsetto like Frankie while I was in my teens. My performance of "Rag Doll" was a favorite of my neighborhood friends and family. As a performer I listened to most every genre of music as I grew up. At my age, I can't "falsetto" like I used to, but I still do okay and perform somewhere around 550 songs regularly (from the 1950s to the 2020s). You have to hear "Rag Doll" and "Let's Hang On", which were all big favorites of mine to perform.
50's and 60's rock music singers were so different than most of todays artist and the music was as well and we have lost alot of classic artist from that era from elvis, buddy holly, everly brothers, ect and thier music lives in thier fans that rememer thier music but with the passing of alot of the 50's artists goes thier tallent which is missed today even if you include the artists from the 60's like janis and jimmy one of a kind talents they are missed. which is why we should listen to thier music and respect it the industry was much different than today as well no internet, it was radio and record sales and your ability to put out good music and not something artifical or mechanically enhanced
they had a million hits. not just this one. or just (oh what a night.) that one was made 12 years later after they broke up and reformed for a few years starting in 1975. but big girls dont cry was sung when they were young and first starting out 1963 as was most of their hits.. at that time they and the beach boys who also were a new pop group and harmonized singing high notes in their songs were called friendly music rivals. it was NJ vs California. because that is the 2 states that they were both from. PS... the famous play and movie (the jersey boys) was about the 4 seasons.
The advent of cable TV and HBO made a lot of movie knowledge ubiquitous. MTV added a new twist to music popularity, though AM radio still ruled in making hits. AM radio and "drive time" were the premier path to a shared national music experience.
This is the original lineup of The Four Seasons for most of the 1960s. In the 1970s, the only original member of the group left performing was Frankie Valli.
I highly recommend the Movie, "Jersey Boys" which is about their rise from their teen years along with their buddy, Joe Pesci. The actors use their own voices and they were matched so closely to the Four Seasons' voices. It was directed by Clint Eastwood. A lot of great music throughout the movie and hilarious antics they pulled on a young, naive Frankie Valli.
These guys grew up in the 1940's and 50's. So a lot of their early stuff will sound as though it came from the 50's. Back then the music world was completely a different animal than it is today. In fact if most of the performers from today were to go back in time to the era when this song was released and try to perform they would be booed off the stage. Plus, they would see how regulated and repressive the times were. If you get the chance a couple of their best songs besides "Sherry" is "Walk Like a Man" and "Ragdoll".
Where did we see those movies?! At the theater! They didn’t show up onTV until literally years later, and when they did finally hit the small screen, it was an event.
Guys, songs from back in the 50's and 60's were rarely more than 2 to 2.5 minutes long. They were written and performed to get the song's message across in that short period of time.
I read a few years ago that The Four Seasons and The Beach Boys are the only 2 groups that had #1 hits BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER the Beatles hit the USA. 4 Seasons were "East coast" and the Beach Boys were "West coast" or "California." I was 13 ❤ when the Four Seasons had their first #1 with Sherry so I followed them pretty much their entire career! Of course, I listened to all kinds of music, but my "go-to" were always the Four Seasons! Of course, I vote for you to play Sherry - 1963, followed by Walk like a Man. These 2 plus Big Girls Don't Cry were their first 3 hits which went to #1. Apparently, at the time, no one had done that at the time! But you really need to see Jersey Boys, which is a biopic about how the Four Seasons got their start. A lot of their music is featured and the story is interesting with even a touch of "the Mob" involved! ❤ I thought the movie was fabulous but I didn't get to see the Broadway play. It was directed by Clint Eastwood and he even has a cameo. One of his daughters also has a bit part. I highly recommend it because it shows a very different time from the present. 😢 Please watch and we'll watch a reaction to it. 😊
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons were one of those solid groups that lasted through the 1st wave of the British Invasion like the Beach Boys did, until 1967 when music came to a change into psychodelic and hard rock. . Frankie went on his own with "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" in1967 even though people try to rewrite history and claim it's the Four Seasons. They broke up, and around 1973 Frankie reformed the group with new members and had a string of modern 1970's sounding hits, ballads and disco songs, and he sang the Theme song to the movie version o the musical Grease. A Broadway music was created about them called "The Jersey Boys" and was a huge success. They did the movie version. My only complaint about this was the musical and movie took some of the hits and sang them, played too fast from the original tempos.
Same as Sam. My mum had the videos of DD and Grease and we watched them. Mind you me and my siblings are all boys. They’re actually good films and still watch them to this day
The reason why almost all the songs from this era were so short is because it was an era when people discovered music by listening to Top 40 radio, and in the '60s, Top 40 radio was heard on AM radio. (FM didn't start becoming a thing untill the mid '70s.) AM Top 40 radio typically played 18 minutes of commercials per hour (compared to about 10-12 minutes per hour in the decades that followed). So radio demanded that songs be no longer than about two and a half minutes, three minutes tops. Record companies complied because they didn't want to risk their artists' songs not getting airplay, as without it, they wouldn't sell any records. (I worked in Top 40 radio from the 1960s untill the 1990s, so believe me, I know the history of this.) Fun fact: No recording artist -- individual or group -- charted more records on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1960s than the Four Seasons.
This is the real Four Seasons from the 1960’s. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons of the later years, 1970s and on (the ones that recorded December 1963) could technically be considered a different group and were a quintet. They consisted of Frankie Valli and 4 totally different guys which changed many times through the years. The original Four Seasons were a quartet with Frankie Valli as lead singer, Bob Gaudio on vocals, keyboards and songwriter, Tommy DeVito on vocals and guitar and Nick Massi on vocals and bass. To hear the real Four Seasons I would focus on the 1960s group.
When I was a kid I didn't know who Frankie Valli was. All I knew, and what they announced on the radio, was the Four Seasons. Franki Valli's recognition, as you point out, came much later. Thanks for the info, and God bless you!
i would like you to do a song bt them that sits between the ones you have done already....THE NIGHT....i bet you would enjoy the bass intro....it was huge in the uk northern soul era

"Sherry" is definitely worth checking out. It's likely the 4 Seasons' best hit.

Frankie's high falsetto was the claim to fame for the Four Seasons and most of their early work used a similar formula.
true but my fav song of theirs was "O' What a Night" (December 1963) and Frankie didn't sing lead on it.

The actors use their own voices and they were matched so closely to the Four Seasons' voices. It was directed by Clint Eastwood. A lot of great music throughout the movie and hilarious antics they pulled on a young, naive Frankie Valli.
"You're Just Too Good To Be True" is the Four Seasons best song! ...and one of the greatest love songs of all time!
If you ever get the chance, go see the musical “Jersey Boys”.
I didn’t care for the movie as much.
They made a Broadway show called "Jersey Boys" and then a movie about them
Walk like a man is my favourite
Classic 😊
Where did we see those movies?! At the theater! They didn’t show up onTV until literally years later, and when they did finally hit the small screen, it was an event.
Guys, songs from back in the 50's and 60's were rarely more than 2 to 2.5 minutes long. They were written and performed to get the song's message across in that short period of time.
And radio stations would not play a song over 3 minutes
@@LBinsocal That too. Of course, that eventually changed.
I read a few years ago that The Four Seasons and The Beach Boys are the only 2 groups that had #1 hits BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER the Beatles hit the USA. 4 Seasons were "East coast" and the Beach Boys were "West coast" or "California."
I was 13 ❤ when the Four Seasons had their first #1 with Sherry so I followed them pretty much their entire career!
They’re actually good films and still watch them to this day
Back in the day, not THAT long ago, a date often meant taking your girl to the movies.
My dad was a HUGE Four Season's fan, so I know them all by heart. I prefer Sherry to this song. Rag Doll is one of my favorites.
Now you should listen to Sherry Walk like a Man as well as other songs from Frankie Valli and the four seasons
I learned this song through the movie Dirty Dancing when it first came out (the movie). Perhaps other movies, too.
do ragdoll
❤❤❤ four seasons were like The Beatles only American. Check out who loves you pretty baby by Frankie Valli.❤❤❤❤
December, 63 (Oh What a Night) is a real gem from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
The origins of this song is explained in the movie Jersey Boys.
We need some funk in the house
Sly & Family Stone- Thank You(falettme be mice elf agin) (70) 🔥
True. Back in the 60s they were just known as the Four Seasons. Frankie was one of the four.
i would like you to do a song bt them that sits between the ones you have done already....THE NIGHT....i bet you would enjoy the bass intro....it was huge in the uk northern soul era
PATRICK SWAYZE - "" She's Like The Wind (Official Music Video) "" featured in 1987 Dirty Dancing Movie. One of the Best Romantic songs of the 1980's Amazing song and Vocals 🎹 I highly recommend it
Beggin', Tell it to the Rain, C'mon Marianne.
Sheri and Big Girls Don't Cry were big hits early on in their career. While all their music is good, their music evolved over time.
Hi Sam and Phil, greetings from England. Another track you should react to is "Walk Like A Man, Talk Like A Man", I think it'll interest you both.
"Don't Think Twice"
