  • A discussion on bread and some semi-usable sports bar blues licks...filmed yesterday. Solid korina guitar my buddy made for me, with old Dimarzio Super Distortion plugged into an old Gretsch 6161 combo amp.

After watching this I donned my end-of-times mask and ventured to Publix, whereupon I purchased the sacred White Mountain Bread for $2.99. "Tom Bukovac suggested this," I told the cashier, who looked befuddled, but nodded. After returning to my vehicle and thoroughly sanitizing the grocery and myself, I pulled a piece from the sacred White Mountain plastic packaging. I took my first bite. "Praise the Lord" I thought to myself, "Truly some of the finest yeast to grace this green earth." On my way home, I passed by a Food City and said aloud, "Let them eat Wonderbread. Those sorry souls know nothing of the blessings from White Mountain."
Cool blues jam, thanks for the licks.

Señor Buk, this is an old-ass video, but I too have enquired into the mysteries of the pick scrape (I came up in punk bands where they were obligatory), and allegedly, EVH's secret was to scrape the string(s) with his right hand while fretting a note with the left, either a high note he would then slide down the neck or a low note he'd slide upward. The combination of the pick noise and the moving note gives you that kind of metallic frequency interference you want out of a good yowling scrape. Que Dios te bendiga.

Man my daughter makes bread and it is the best on the planet. Easy as well. Flour, Yeast, Water and Salt. She mixes that together in a bowl, then lets it sit for 12-24 hrs, Punch it down let it rise again for 2hrs then bake. The time you are working the dough is about 15 mins max, the rest is waiting and cooking. It's called The Miracle Boule out of Laura Calders book French Taste. I LOVE BREAD AND GUITAR... AND BEER AND COFFEE... AND THESE VIDEOS... and our mutual friend CAROLINE DAWN JOHNSON... she had you come play on a demo of ours. Thank you for your artistry my man and theses great lessons.

Eddie would only scrape for a few inches over the pickups as I understand. He would really quickly transition to just his left hand sliding down the frets. So it's a pick scrape and hand slide. With his distorted amps it sounds awesome. Pete Thorn explained this one time.

The best thing about watching Tom play is that you can get at least a half a dozen ideas you hadn't thought of before, just by watching him jam for a couple minutes. I literally get noticably better in 10 minutes. And I'm already pretty good. So that's awesome. The trick though, is to retain the ideas, and not loose them to the dust bin of your subconscious. Even then however, the ideas probably do some good. They might come out at some future date, and you'll be able to give yourself credit for them. 😂

In my opinion, the reason EVH gets the good pick scrapes is because he uses thinner picks like a .60mm. The thinner pick gets into those winds on that low E.

Tom, I agree about Eddie being the king of pick scrapes (among other things). I think his best is at the end of the "You Really Got Me" solo, after the toggle switch flutter. So epic!!! It sounds like he double tracked the pick scrape. Talk about being committed! Love the channel. This musical vignette was super inspiring. Thanks!
