I'm a big Swans fan, and while much of their discography is disturbing, Soundtracks for the Blind is the scariest, because its horror is so vague. It really operates under the theory that it's what you *don't* see that's the most frightening
I've not experienced many other channels that have been able to vividly describe music in such an expressive way as you do, your passion really shows and you make what could be an otherwise dry video (due to not being able to play the music) into something very interesting. Great job.
Sorry to bother you with a random question, I've just always wondered why some TH-cam users have a tick at the end of there username, similar to the blue tick you see some people on twitter have, except its blue instead of grey like on TH-cam (I have dark mode on so it may be a different colour in light mode) sorry again for the random question I just haven't seen anyone with one for ages and always meant to ask the next time I saw someone with one.

Basically from what I gather is it's just to prove you are an official account that makes original content with a certain number of subscribers and views. So if someone was to impersonate you or reupload your videos other users could see it wasn't you and the videos were potentially taken from someone else. Hope that makes sense

If you're looking to make another list of disturbing albums, I'd recommend putting Matriphagy by Tallah. It's nu-metal but listen to the lyrics and think about the story in it.

The Caretaker is a hard listen. A beautiful listen, but hard listen. Especially given that Alzheimer's run's in my family. It's tough to know that is what is awaiting at the end of my life.

I actually tried to listen through the entirety of the Caretaker’s album. I’m not really into ambient but after watching a video analysis I got really curious. I don’t think I’ve been the same ever since. Those last 5 minutes though...

And I don’t think any explanation I’ll give would do the whole album justice (and probably no one is going to actually care to read an essay about it in the comments anyway) It’s something that needs to be experienced alone for it to have an impact.
Yeh it's a hard listen, especially when you keep in mind the subject matter. Agreed on the end. It goes from noisy and uncomfortable to 5 minutes of peace. I'd imagine that's where The Caretaker is simulating the inevitable death of the subject. Harrowing stuff.
Everywhere At The End of Time has the opposite effect on me to be honest. Like, it makes Pad more productive at work, right? I’m more so... disabled by this album. I don’t really have the words but even just thinking about some of the opening tracks freezes me up like a deer in headlights. It’s haunting me, that opening track. People say confronting it can help but I don’t have the heart to hear the whole album through, but at the same time I just want to rinse it away from my mind and I don’t know what to do about it. It’s affecting me and I’ve never felt this weak. It’s powerful stuff, that album. What a way to go.
A while back I listened through large chunks of it from the start to the end, and yeah, it's the same here. It's something I wish I could go back and never do. I just.. can't handle any of it, aurally or conceptually. It's mentally and emotionally corrosive. Even just spontaneously thinking about it has the potential to put me in a state of anxiety/panic for hours. I've never had such feelings about a piece of art before. I absolutely hate it and wish it didn't exist, but I also have intense respect for it that it's even able to provoke such feelings in me. Damn do I just wish I could go back to a time where I was unaware of its existence though.

smokedpone I’m glad to know I’m not alone here. I listened to 30 minutes of it in total. Also I normally avoid depressing albums but it popped on my TH-cam recommendations, and the album cover looked cool so I clicked. Boi did I regret that decision. I skipped but every second I left it on, it felt like hell, even the beginning made me uncomfortable. It reminded me about my grandpa who passed away from Alzheimer’s. It made me think about time, about my existence, and the fear of losing my loved ones. I beat my depression one year ago and now I’m back to square one cuz of this album. It’s day 3 since listening to it, and I’m still crying, I haven’t cried in months. I didn’t know noise could affect me this much. I wish I would’ve never clicked on it. It’s a masterpiece and a true work of art, but I wasn’t mentally ready for it.
@@kebab_boi It's such a difficult topic and condition for everyone involved, and the album presents it in such a raw and disturbing way (and like the commenter above pointed out, the track titles alone are just... ugh). It pains me to know that others are struggling with these same thoughts and fears, but there's a comfort in hearing others talk about them. I struggle with depression and anxiety myself, and if I wasn't already in a bit of a dark place when I discovered the album, it definitely would've thrown me back into one. The harshest part of the pain does fade over time, but the scar sticks with you. Learning to live with the scars of life is just part of our existence I suppose. It's something I'm still trying to learn how to do myself. I always consider it brave to share that kind of vulnerability with others, thank you for your comment. I wish nothing but the best for you and anyone else out there reading this. Hang in there, we're all in this together ♥
The caretaker album gives me vibes of a vacant art museum, a victrola playing in an empty room where a janitor mops lazily. A feeling of abandonment and loneliness as his mind slowly rots.
The Caretaker's Everywhere At The End Of Time album is truly beautiful. It may take a while to get through, but it is a surreal and humbling experience that is impossible to explain.
Right after I listened to it I said I would never want to live with Alzheimer’s so I would take myself out cus I think dying with memories is better than without but I realised when I will die every single memory will be gone, amazing album 10/10 would not listen again

Listening to Geogaddi has helped me feel calm countless times, especially while dissociating. I can understand why some people find the album creepy but it just makes me feel safe idk
Keep in mind: all these albums can be incredibly beautiful if you let go, don't let yourself be chained by preconceived notions of 'spookyness' or whatever because you can loose much of the richness within. With that said, thank you for exposing these to a larger demographic, Pad.
Some fun trivia about Geogaddi: The Track "Sunshine Recorder" was sampled in Blank Banshee's "Teen Pregnancy" The runtime of the CD is 66 minutes and 6 seconds. The closing track, "Magic Window," contains no audio. The Synths on several tracks are reversed, making the attack and decay sound off. It's not immediately obvious because the synth tones are so unnatural to begin with. Yes, that IS Lesley Nielsen, from the National Geographic documentary "Dive to the Edge of Creation" Following the release of Geogaddi and the previous EP In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, the band was accused of having ties with satanism and the occult.

The last song at the end of time, those last six minutes is when the whole master piece comes together and all makes sence, it hits you all at once. My grandma had dementia and by the end I was a crying mess, but I didn't cry from sadness, it was relief to understand what she went through and that she found peace. Throughout the piece I was choking on my sadness and at the silence it was like a knife through the chest, followed by an emotional payoff and relief I've never felt before. That album is the definition of emotional brutality beyond words.

(often called "the German Nurse With Wound") and the wonderfully eerie dark ambient project Mirror, and occasional collaborator with the likes of Merzbow, Locrian, The Legendary Pink Dots (as Mimir) and, of course, Current 93. I'm pretty definitively a metalhead-my poison of choice is the more dissonant, violent end of black/death, personally, although drone-doom and sludge were my entrée into the genre and anything with sufficiently ugly vocals is cool with me-and I still think this list has a really strong aesthetic even if my own would be substantially different. I Have a Special Plan for This World, in particular, is a god-tier choice-Ligotti is one of my favourite authors ever and Current 93's dark ambient work is always on point-and I found A Sucked Orange a pleasant surprise with an intriguing rationale. The emphasis here seems to be creeping dread that sinks into your bones and stays with you long after the record ends, and while I think metal certainly *can* do that-Khanate, in particular, were masters of this-I don't think it's actually all that common. What metal does genuinely unsettle me, I cherish, however.

In my opinion, The Caretaker's Everywhere at the End of Time stage 4-6 is the scariest albums in the Internet. It's saddening that the third stage is the last non-scary stage of this. Everywhere at the End of Time is the musical representation of Althimer's and it does a good job at it.
stage 3 is also pretty damn scary. it may not be pure noise or dark ambient but this is the turning point. this is where the music really starts to unravel and the second half of stage 3 was easily one of the hardest parts of the album to get through for me, alongside the beginning and end of stage 5 and a good majority of stage 4.

Meet the Residents is one of my favorite albums of all time. The first time I heard it, I was confused for like 20 seconds and then I fell in love. I always cite it as an amazing album and it is PERFECT. I don't know why I have such a love for it but I do and I'm glad that I do.
I didn't expected to see Geogaddi here, I thought that I was being a bit crazy for feeling something sinister about that album. I blame my first experience listening to it: I had a whole-night travel by bus, and when everyone was asleep, I was awake and very anxious. I was getting into IDM and I decided to discover Geogaddi that long night. I had the feeling of being completely alone, everything felt so cold and distant, I look through the window and there was a very deep darkness, everything was so... Unfamiliar. There where a row of intense white highway lights, but those seemed to be just like floating orbs of light, because its light was not enough to show something under it. I felt just like in... another kind of place, stalked by something that I couldn't grasp.
I reccomend Geogaddi to basically everyone in this comment section. Its more than just a "disturbing" album. It gives off a vibe and a feeling unlike no other. one of my favorite albums of all time.
Yeah, Geogaddi is simultaneously disturbing and beautiful. I always felt there was an intangible and supernatural essence BOC captured that infused itself into the music when they recorded the album. It's an experience that has to be felt as well as listened to 👍🏼
Dude, Uboa - The Origin Of My Depression deserved a spot on this list, it is so dark, so disturbing, so hurting, so beautiful, it's like a transcendental experience listening to this thing, it's amazing, but, overall, I liked your choices, so many great albums on this
Temple Of Utopia Uboa kicks ass. I've been following her work on and off since her sludge metal days and she just keeps getting better and, frankly, scarier.
While maybe a bit more haunting than scary, Tangerine Dream's Zeit is a great example of how to unnerve the listener. It's like viewing space from the perspective of a single-celled organism on the ocean floor. The album is bigger than the listener and coats you in this vast melancholy and anxiety that can be felt for days after listening. Truly a gorgeous piece of art.

He trained Maurice White who later formed Earth Wind and Fire. 'Dreams' is really different from most of his other work. It's strange, twisted, and unpredictable. It goes back and forth from upbeat to psychedelic and avant garde with creepy sounding wah wah guitar effects attacking your ears at every moment. The weird part is that not only does his music not normally sound like this, the album itself doesn't sound out of the ordinary for him. It's mostly filled with elegant piano playing and a couple of funky jazz songs. This song has been sampled by many rap groups like Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, and Goodie Mob. Rarely have I heard a song accurately recreate the feeling you have during a dream (or a nightmare)
I actually like Everywhere At The End Of Time. It was a great album! It was happy at the beginning and very sad at the end. The fact that it was about dementia made me feel sad, a fear but a very different kin of fear. I like it tho!
Another really awesome album is "The Skin Falls Off The Body" by Lighght. Disturbing, skin-crawling, atmospheric and thoroughly uncomfortable. Makes the skin under your fingernails tingle.

You suffer through this terribly descriptive hell of a soundscape, but the title sounds almost hopeful, so you clench your teeth and whince and curl your toes and just endure it. And then you get this. It sounds like your consciousness is brutally torn out of your lifeless cadaver. It's cruel, and horrible, and anxiety-inducing and I love it. I was cowering in the fetal position by the time the Album was done, man.
I listened to the beginning which was really nice and the I was clicking on random ones and clicked on 4 which was terrifying. I didn’t actually have a panic attack it was more of an existential crisis and me remembering the message behind the album. It’s so sad

i wouldnt call confield unsettling... its a mix of cold, mechanical sounds and more familiar organic ones which makes a really interesting, unique, remote atmosphere. id agree that its probably autechre's most inhospitable album but its still not disturbing or dark to me. just a really abstract, distant, corrupted funk. plenty of beautiful moments in there. or maybe ive just listened to too much ae lol
Hearing the end of caretaker broke me. 6 hours of pure depletion and sorrow ends with a sad yet enlightening tune followed by pure silence... I cried for about 30 minutes after listening to this album and I will never look at dementia the same
Geogaddi is special to me, especially gyroscope. You see, I'm neurodivergent and had a pretty abusive childhood so the nostalgia evoked by geogaddi, while creepy, is really the same exact nostalgia I feel thinking about my childhood. It evokes memories of savoring quiet moments as I watched the sun rise. I woke up too early because I noticed that if people were asleep they couldn't yell. I'd think about pancakes and how I wished I could have them for breakfast, and I'd play disney movies in my head. It's small, and it's dark, but it's nice to remember those quiet moments and geogaddi brings me to them.

Mandy it has a much darker tone than the other Primus albums. Some songs aren’t necessarily about creepy things, but have a very dark, disturbing and unnerving sound, like Mr. Krinkle, Hail Santa, and The Postman. Mr. Krinkle is just a song about friendly chats Les Claypool had with the drummer of Faith No More, but the upright bass and overall tone of the song make it sound horrifying. While others are about outright disturbing subjects. “Bob” being about a man walking home into his apartment and finding his roommate’s dead body hanging from the ceiling because he committed suicide. “My Name Is Mud” being about a mentally deranged man murdering someone with a baseball bat. And don’t get me started on the music videos for “My Name is Mud” and especially “Mr. Krinkle”, featuring a fat humanoid pig-man singing, dancing and playing the upright bass in a dimly-lit abandoned warehouse as a bizarre and freakish circus moves across the set behind him. When I first saw that video and heard the song in my early teens, it haunted me.

It needs something special. Preservation for when bandcamp goes the way of the dino's. (bandcamp collection erosion is sadly a thing.. artists falling out with labels, or straight up deleting their earlier work instead of putting it on private, and poof, it's vanished, like you never bought it..) Physical mediums are so damn underrated. The convenience of lossy compressed formats (or flac if that's your thing) makes most music feel less important than it really is, when it suddenly "fits" onto an external ssd.. Guess that's why I hoard tapes.. Thanks for sharing dude! You made a nice window into your mind once again.

I wish I'd had Atrium way back about 20 years ago when I was still in school and worked graveyard night shifts as a janitor in a gigantic mall (4 stories over 2 full city blocks, bridged over the intersecting street on the upper levels). That place also had 3 basement levels and several forgotten, non-public areas that hadn't been used since the late '80s and looked straight out of the "back rooms" creepypasta. Regardless of where I was, it always had an eerie atmosphere at night; even out in the modern renovated public areas... I think that's inherent to all public spaces when after hours and totally empty of people.

i'd start with geogaddi, if you're good with that move to swans, after that move to whatever i haven't listened to half the stuff here(though i definitely need to) though i will most certainly advise. be advised if just the descripton scared you everywhere at the end of time is going to petrify you in unease, it made me emotional 4 different times listening

Alex H It's always interesting to see different people's responses to different power electronics/noise/industrial acts, because early Whitehouse is actually really funny to me in a way I think was at least partially intentional because it's all so completely over the top, but Sutcliffe Jügend, which was founded by the guy who wrote some of their most outrageous songs, have multiple albums which genuinely terrify me because of how they underplay the freaky shit just enough that it feels uncomfortably real.
Personally, my favorite dark disturbing album on the web is Haruomi Hosono's "Hana ni Mizu - 花に水" There are three ambient tracks, each 15- 20 minutes long. However, the second track, "Growth," leaves me feeling disturbed. It is like if Junji Ito's artwork was distilled into your ears. It's hollow and empty, the muffled melody in the background seemingly just behind you. It creeps in, so simple, yet leaving you with a lingering odor of dread. (P.S it really isn't all that disturbing, but the second track is. The first one is cute, but several minutes towards the end you can hear a hint of "Growth's" disjointed melody. The last track was produced for a chain of Japanese department stores named Muji 無印. They pride themselves on their simple and unbranded products. The track is very fitting for such a place imo.)

The caretaker piece was absolutely amazing. Some tracks made me kind of hyperventilate but over all the entire project was beautiful. I have the most respect to the artists involved because they put so much into it. I bought the entire thing. I listen to all stages at any time. But my favorite is J1. I get ready to the noise when we get into stage 6 and I skate to stage 4-5. It's not that dark when you have already explored the darkest part of your brain.
Who gon tell him it's Basinski Slip up aside, another great vid from you. Your Current 93 and Residents talk was great, seriously did those releases justice. Not Available is a great introduction to the world of The Residents, I find releases like Eskimo and Meet the Residents to be a lot more chilling and uneasy but Not Available is a damn near masterpiece in and of itself. I really loved that you included The Caretaker’s music in this this video. I believe that Everywhere At The End Of Time is a perfect fit for this list. I’d like to commend you on the astoundingly poetic description you gave it; while I was listening to the part where you were describing the part about how you said it sounded like being stuck on a gigantic maritime boat, shrouded in mystery and the unknown, with everything you could ask for on it but absolutely nobody to share the wonders of it with, I was swept away by your description. I couldn’t have said it better myself! I never really knew myself what kind of weird masterpiece the album initially painted in my mind until you explained it. Your interpretation of this album is beautifully creepy, gorgeously eerie, and it really sounds like a thrilling movie plot, or a bestselling book’s premise! I love it so much! I also love how you described how the music slowly forgets itself, how it’s (and I quote,) “bouncing piano notes without a care in the world, basking in the warm, fuzzy feelings The Caretaker paints the earlier parts of the album in, slowly beginning to decay and rot until it’s motionless on the floor, struggling to get its last breaths out.” Honestly? I think that singlehandedly is the best description I’ve ever heard; not just for the album itself, but the best description I’ve heard of anything, ever. Well, anyway, that’s just my two cents. I really enjoyed this video, and i’ll be sure to check out the rest of the albums you’ve mentioned in this well-made list as well. Keep up the great work!
I love Everywhere at the End of Time so much. After having listened to the whole thing in one sitting, it's really nice and relieving to just come back to the album and go through your favorite songs.
"I have a special plan for this world" is one of the biggest obsessions in my life together with Twin Peaks and House of Leaves. There's something about this kind of twisted, unsettling art that just calls to me and feels like home.
As a Residents fan (and fan of industrial music in general), I don't really understand what makes Not Available such a disturbing album. If anything it feels more melancholic to me rather than disturbing. Not Available, alongside Mark of the Mole, The Big Bubble, and Metal, Meat & Bone has to be my favorite album from them.
A T R I U M, you described it perfectly, but I love it so much. I find myself having constant nostalgic chills when listening. Also “I have a special plan for this world” I found when I was in 6th grade and it just sent me to a weird place.. very interesting piece.
I find the album Iowa by slipknot to be disturbing due to that place the members were in, the depression and incessant use of illegal substances. As well as Corey Taylor’s haunting screams caused by the strange methods of recording them. Corey at times would cut himself with broken glass to achieve the sound he was after and even cover himself in his own vomit while doing so. Because of this I find this album haunting and the bass recordings of the late Paul Gray add to this feeling of a suffocating hole beating you until you drown in yourself.
You Won’t Get What You Want, the Daughters album, is by far one of my favorite, and one of the best albums of the past 10 years if I’m being honest. It’s raw, abrasive, and beautiful, all at the same time. Definitely one worth checking out if you haven’t yet
I’ve listened to “ATRIUM” by Hallmark 87’ and I wouldn’t say it was Disturbing in any way. I actually found it rather peaceful, maybe a little haunting but it had a very nice atmosphere to it.

I'm a big Swans fan, and while much of their discography is disturbing, Soundtracks for the Blind is the scariest, because its horror is so vague. It really operates under the theory that it's what you *don't* see that's the most frightening

I've not experienced many other channels that have been able to vividly describe music in such an expressive way as you do, your passion really shows and you make what could be an otherwise dry video (due to not being able to play the music) into something very interesting. Great job.

I actually tried to listen through the entirety of the Caretaker’s album. I’m not really into ambient but after watching a video analysis I got really curious. I don’t think I’ve been the same ever since.

Everywhere At The End of Time has the opposite effect on me to be honest. Like, it makes Pad more productive at work, right? I’m more so... disabled by this album. I don’t really have the words but even just thinking about some of the opening tracks freezes me up like a deer in headlights.
It’s haunting me, that opening track. People say confronting it can help but I don’t have the heart to hear the whole album through, but at the same time I just want to rinse it away from my mind and I don’t know what to do about it. It’s affecting me and I’ve never felt this weak.
It’s powerful stuff, that album. What a way to go.
A while back I listened through large chunks of it from the start to the end, and yeah, it's the same here. It's something I wish I could go back and never do. I just.. can't handle any of it, aurally or conceptually. It's mentally and emotionally corrosive. Even just spontaneously thinking about it has the potential to put me in a state of anxiety/panic for hours.
I've never had such feelings about a piece of art before. I absolutely hate it and wish it didn't exist, but I also have intense respect for it that it's even able to provoke such feelings in me. Damn do I just wish I could go back to a time where I was unaware of its existence though.

smokedpone I’m glad to know I’m not alone here. I listened to 30 minutes of it in total. Also I normally avoid depressing albums but it popped on my TH-cam recommendations, and the album cover looked cool so I clicked. Boi did I regret that decision. I skipped but every second I left it on, it felt like hell, even the beginning made me uncomfortable. It reminded me about my grandpa who passed away from Alzheimer’s. It made me think about time, about my existence, and the fear of losing my loved ones. I beat my depression one year ago and now I’m back to square one cuz of this album. It’s day 3 since listening to it, and I’m still crying, I haven’t cried in months. I didn’t know noise could affect me this much. I wish I would’ve never clicked on it. It’s a masterpiece and a true work of art, but I wasn’t mentally ready for it.
@@kebab_boi It's such a difficult topic and condition for everyone involved, and the album presents it in such a raw and disturbing way (and like the commenter above pointed out, the track titles alone are just... ugh). It pains me to know that others are struggling with these same thoughts and fears, but there's a comfort in hearing others talk about them. I struggle with depression and anxiety myself, and if I wasn't already in a bit of a dark place when I discovered the album, it definitely would've thrown me back into one. The harshest part of the pain does fade over time, but the scar sticks with you. Learning to live with the scars of life is just part of our existence I suppose. It's something I'm still trying to learn how to do myself.

The caretaker album gives me vibes of a vacant art museum, a victrola playing in an empty room where a janitor mops lazily. A feeling of abandonment and loneliness as his mind slowly rots.
To me, the album reminds me of an abandoned building, specifically the Overlook Hotel from The Shining.
The Caretaker's Everywhere At The End Of Time album is truly beautiful. It may take a while to get through, but it is a surreal and humbling experience that is impossible to explain.
Right after I listened to it I said I would never want to live with Alzheimer’s so I would take myself out cus I think dying with memories is better than without but I realised when I will die every single memory will be gone, amazing album 10/10 would not listen again

The last song at the end of time, those last six minutes is when the whole master piece comes together and all makes sence, it hits you all at once. My grandma had dementia and by the end I was a crying mess, but I didn't cry from sadness, it was relief to understand what she went through and that she found peace. Throughout the piece I was choking on my sadness and at the silence it was like a knife through the chest, followed by an emotional payoff and relief I've never felt before. That album is the definition of emotional brutality beyond words.

I'm pretty definitively a metalhead-my poison of choice is the more dissonant, violent end of black/death, personally, although drone-doom and sludge were my entrée into the genre and anything with sufficiently ugly vocals is cool with me-and I still think this list has a really strong aesthetic even if my own would be substantially different. I Have a Special Plan for This World, in particular, is a god-tier choice-Ligotti is one of my favourite authors ever and Current 93's dark ambient work is always on point-and I found A Sucked Orange a pleasant surprise with an intriguing rationale. The emphasis here seems to be creeping dread that sinks into your bones and stays with you long after the record ends, and while I think metal certainly *can* do that-Khanate, in particular, were masters of this-I don't think it's actually all that common. What metal does genuinely unsettle me, I cherish, however.
@@PadChennington Blut Aus Nord's "The Work Which Transforms God," Silencer's "Death, Pierce Me," and Portal's "Outre'" come to my mind first. Also, not metal, but Lustmord's "Purifying Fire" compilation album really gets to me.

In my opinion, The Caretaker's Everywhere at the End of Time stage 4-6 is the scariest albums in the Internet. It's saddening that the third stage is the last non-scary stage of this. Everywhere at the End of Time is the musical representation of Althimer's and it does a good job at it.
stage 3 is also pretty damn scary. it may not be pure noise or dark ambient but this is the turning point. this is where the music really starts to unravel and the second half of stage 3 was easily one of the hardest parts of the album to get through for me, alongside the beginning and end of stage 5 and a good majority of stage 4.
i just finished stage 3 and began stage 4, its horrifying and i cant comprehend it and it makes me filled with inexplicable emotion and i just cant help but cry

Meet the Residents is one of my favorite albums of all time. The first time I heard it, I was confused for like 20 seconds and then I fell in love. I always cite it as an amazing album and it is PERFECT. I don't know why I have such a love for it but I do and I'm glad that I do.

Knowing how google works, I watched this and waited to see wich album the algorythmn will choose for me.
I got Hallmark '87: A T R I U M
I didn't expected to see Geogaddi here, I thought that I was being a bit crazy for feeling something sinister about that album. I blame my first experience listening to it: I had a whole-night travel by bus, and when everyone was asleep, I was awake and very anxious. I was getting into IDM and I decided to discover Geogaddi that long night. I had the feeling of being completely alone, everything felt so cold and distant, I look through the window and there was a very deep darkness, everything was so... Unfamiliar. There where a row of intense white highway lights, but those seemed to be just like floating orbs of light, because its light was not enough to show something under it. I felt just like in... another kind of place, stalked by something that I couldn't grasp.
I reccomend Geogaddi to basically everyone in this comment section. Its more than just a "disturbing" album. It gives off a vibe and a feeling unlike no other. one of my favorite albums of all time.

Yeah, Geogaddi is simultaneously disturbing and beautiful. I always felt there was an intangible and supernatural essence BOC captured that infused itself into the music when they recorded the album. It's an experience that has to be felt as well as listened to 👍🏼

While maybe a bit more haunting than scary, Tangerine Dream's Zeit is a great example of how to unnerve the listener. It's like viewing space from the perspective of a single-celled organism on the ocean floor. The album is bigger than the listener and coats you in this vast melancholy and anxiety that can be felt for days after listening. Truly a gorgeous piece of art.

He trained Maurice White who later formed Earth Wind and Fire. 'Dreams' is really different from most of his other work. It's strange, twisted, and unpredictable. It goes back and forth from upbeat to psychedelic and avant garde with creepy sounding wah wah guitar effects attacking your ears at every moment. The weird part is that not only does his music not normally sound like this, the album itself doesn't sound out of the ordinary for him. It's mostly filled with elegant piano playing and a couple of funky jazz songs. This song has been sampled by many rap groups like Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, and Goodie Mob. Rarely have I heard a song accurately recreate the feeling you have during a dream (or a nightmare)

I actually like Everywhere At The End Of Time. It was a great album! It was happy at the beginning and very sad at the end. The fact that it was about dementia made me feel sad, a fear but a very different kin of fear.

And then you get this. It sounds like your consciousness is brutally torn out of your lifeless cadaver. It's cruel, and horrible, and anxiety-inducing and I love it. I was cowering in the fetal position by the time the Album was done, man.

i wouldnt call confield unsettling... its a mix of cold, mechanical sounds and more familiar organic ones which makes a really interesting, unique, remote atmosphere. id agree that its probably autechre's most inhospitable album but its still not disturbing or dark to me. just a really abstract, distant, corrupted funk. plenty of beautiful moments in there. or maybe ive just listened to too much ae lol
Hearing the end of caretaker broke me. 6 hours of pure depletion and sorrow ends with a sad yet enlightening tune followed by pure silence... I cried for about 30 minutes after listening to this album and I will never look at dementia the same
Geogaddi is special to me, especially gyroscope. You see, I'm neurodivergent and had a pretty abusive childhood so the nostalgia evoked by geogaddi, while creepy, is really the same exact nostalgia I feel thinking about my childhood.
It evokes memories of savoring quiet moments as I watched the sun rise. I woke up too early because I noticed that if people were asleep they couldn't yell. I'd think about pancakes and how I wished I could have them for breakfast, and I'd play disney movies in my head.
It's small, and it's dark, but it's nice to remember those quiet moments and geogaddi brings me to them.

Ross Orange Mezzanine is an excellent album! I’ll have to check out that Skinny Puppy record
Mandy it has a much darker tone than the other Primus albums. Some songs aren’t necessarily about creepy things, but have a very dark, disturbing and unnerving sound, like Mr. Krinkle, Hail Santa, and The Postman. Mr. Krinkle is just a song about friendly chats Les Claypool had with the drummer of Faith No More, but the upright bass and overall tone of the song make it sound horrifying. While others are about outright disturbing subjects. “Bob” being about a man walking home into his apartment and finding his roommate’s dead body hanging from the ceiling because he committed suicide. “My Name Is Mud” being about a mentally deranged man murdering someone with a baseball bat.
And don’t get me started on the music videos for “My Name is Mud” and especially “Mr. Krinkle”, featuring a fat humanoid pig-man singing, dancing and playing the upright bass in a dimly-lit abandoned warehouse as a bizarre and freakish circus moves across the set behind him. When I first saw that video and heard the song in my early teens, it haunted me.

Physical mediums are so damn underrated. The convenience of lossy compressed formats (or flac if that's your thing) makes most music feel less important than it really is, when it suddenly "fits" onto an external ssd.. Guess that's why I hoard tapes..

I wish I'd had Atrium way back about 20 years ago when I was still in school and worked graveyard night shifts as a janitor in a gigantic mall (4 stories over 2 full city blocks, bridged over the intersecting street on the upper levels). That place also had 3 basement levels and several forgotten, non-public areas that hadn't been used since the late '80s and looked straight out of the "back rooms" creepypasta. Regardless of where I was, it always had an eerie atmosphere at night; even out in the modern renovated public areas... I think that's inherent to all public spaces when after hours and totally empty of people.

Alex H It's always interesting to see different people's responses to different power electronics/noise/industrial acts, because early Whitehouse is actually really funny to me in a way I think was at least partially intentional because it's all so completely over the top, but Sutcliffe Jügend, which was founded by the guy who wrote some of their most outrageous songs, have multiple albums which genuinely terrify me because of how they underplay the freaky shit just enough that it feels uncomfortably real.

Personally, my favorite dark disturbing album on the web is Haruomi Hosono's "Hana ni Mizu - 花に水" There are three ambient tracks, each 15- 20 minutes long. However, the second track, "Growth," leaves me feeling disturbed. It is like if Junji Ito's artwork was distilled into your ears. It's hollow and empty, the muffled melody in the background seemingly just behind you. It creeps in, so simple, yet leaving you with a lingering odor of dread.
(P.S it really isn't all that disturbing, but the second track is. The first one is cute, but several minutes towards the end you can hear a hint of "Growth's" disjointed melody. The last track was produced for a chain of Japanese department stores named Muji 無印. They pride themselves on their simple and unbranded products. The track is very fitting for such a place imo.)

The caretaker piece was absolutely amazing. Some tracks made me kind of hyperventilate but over all the entire project was beautiful. I have the most respect to the artists involved because they put so much into it. I bought the entire thing. I listen to all stages at any time. But my favorite is J1.

I really loved that you included The Caretaker’s music in this this video. I believe that Everywhere At The End Of Time is a perfect fit for this list.
I’d like to commend you on the astoundingly poetic description you gave it; while I was listening to the part where you were describing the part about how you said it sounded like being stuck on a gigantic maritime boat, shrouded in mystery and the unknown, with everything you could ask for on it but absolutely nobody to share the wonders of it with, I was swept away by your description. I couldn’t have said it better myself! I never really knew myself what kind of weird masterpiece the album initially painted in my mind until you explained it. Your interpretation of this album is beautifully creepy, gorgeously eerie, and it really sounds like a thrilling movie plot, or a bestselling book’s premise! I love it so much!
I also love how you described how the music slowly forgets itself, how it’s (and I quote,) “bouncing piano notes without a care in the world, basking in the warm, fuzzy feelings The Caretaker paints the earlier parts of the album in, slowly beginning to decay and rot until it’s motionless on the floor, struggling to get its last breaths out.” Honestly? I think that singlehandedly is the best description I’ve ever heard; not just for the album itself, but the best description I’ve heard of anything, ever.
Well, anyway, that’s just my two cents. I really enjoyed this video, and i’ll be sure to check out the rest of the albums you’ve mentioned in this well-made list as well. Keep up the great work!

I love Everywhere at the End of Time so much. After having listened to the whole thing in one sitting, it's really nice and relieving to just come back to the album and go through your favorite songs.
"I have a special plan for this world" is one of the biggest obsessions in my life together with Twin Peaks and House of Leaves. There's something about this kind of twisted, unsettling art that just calls to me and feels like home.

As a Residents fan (and fan of industrial music in general), I don't really understand what makes Not Available such a disturbing album. If anything it feels more melancholic to me rather than disturbing. Not Available, alongside Mark of the Mole, The Big Bubble, and Metal, Meat & Bone has to be my favorite album from them.
There is truly no other album like Geogaddi to me. Thank you for including it, it’s an album that everyone needs to listen to at least once imo

The album "The Disintegration Loops " was quite a harrowing experience, even if simple in execution.
A T R I U M, you described it perfectly, but I love it so much. I find myself having constant nostalgic chills when listening.
Also “I have a special plan for this world” I found when I was in 6th grade and it just sent me to a weird place.. very interesting piece.
I find the album Iowa by slipknot to be disturbing due to that place the members were in, the depression and incessant use of illegal substances. As well as Corey Taylor’s haunting screams caused by the strange methods of recording them. Corey at times would cut himself with broken glass to achieve the sound he was after and even cover himself in his own vomit while doing so. Because of this I find this album haunting and the bass recordings of the late Paul Gray add to this feeling of a suffocating hole beating you until you drown in yourself.
That shit is nothing compared to Swans though
You Won’t Get What You Want, the Daughters album, is by far one of my favorite, and one of the best albums of the past 10 years if I’m being honest. It’s raw, abrasive, and beautiful, all at the same time. Definitely one worth checking out if you haven’t yet
I’ve listened to “ATRIUM” by Hallmark 87’ and I wouldn’t say it was Disturbing in any way. I actually found it rather peaceful, maybe a little haunting but it had a very nice atmosphere to it.
