    Hey pad, I had an idea for a genre you could cover: ritual ambient. It's a pretty neat genre that I frequently listen to and think you might find it interesting. Scorpion Milk by Arktau Eos and Language of Red Goats are good starting points

    There's an album called "Songs of Mourning" by Carl Gene which is one of the most harrowing things I've ever listened to. It's about his mother's suicide and even contains audio of a detective reading his mother's suicide note to him. It's uncomfortably personal because you feel like you've been inserted into one of the darkest moments in a person's life. I've never experienced anything quite like it.

    Ah Leyland Kirby ...
    For a long time, his music best described my mental state in the 2010s. It was so good that I was convinced I could never make music myself ever again. Interestingly enough, when We, so tired came out, it also helped describe my mental state, in particular the tracks “Collected light”, “Solid mentality” (which you used in your background) and “Tinseltown”. But it was also the same time when I started my deep dive in the whole vapour scene, which would in turn help me get my own music making groove and thus become キラヨシ.
    But I want to add that I actually wrote to him back then and even expressed my own doubts. He did respond and, thankfully, encouraged me in a way that made sense to me years later. So in a way, this was an example - and thankfully there has been and will be more like it - where I approach an artist as a fellow peer and there’s great comfort to know there are other artists out there who struggling to make sense of things too.
    P.S. I have to revisit my Bandcamp wishlist because it has reached critical mass 😁

    • @PadChennington
      @PadChennington  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Derek! Hope all is well my friend, sending positive energy over to ya..
      He actually responded to an email I sent him too a little while back... he's an incredible fella. His email response to me was very personable too, it reminds you we're all people at the end of the day.

      I know you've said on live streams that you'll get to it, but if you haven't yet, please, please, please take a day and deep dive into Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Brian Eno. I don't care if you never do a video on any of them, but it's a serious dissonance where you know so much about what they've inspired but are missing these core foundations.
      Now, for the show, I think you would have a blast covering Ghost Box Records. Very cohesive, more a movement than a brand. (Though again, good to know your Boards of Canada going in ;) )

    Have you heard of Stalaggh/Gulaggh before? It's a bit more in the realm of atmospheric/noise and underground black metal, but it's quite a rabbit hole to fall into. It's a musical project that uses the screams and cries of asylum patients as the vocals for the music. While it sounds dark and a bit morally questionable, I've heard one of the members of the project works with mental patients and has them sign consent forms before they do anything. Most of the patients apparently say it feels relieving to be able to vent their feelings in such a way... Although there was one incident where a patient snapped during a recording session, nearly strangling one of the band members, then drawing some disturbing artwork before later ending his own life. You can find said drawing with a Google search of the band's name. I will warn you now though: their "music" is the exact opposite of pleasant to listen to. Either way, hope you find this interesting!
    *Edit* - Just found this, but apparently you can hear the aforementioned mental patient attacking one of the members of the band around 12:10 in their album "Projekt Terror." It was all recorded and left in because they wanted everything to be as real as possible.

    Something I remembered while you were talking about time was that in one history lesson our teacher was teaching about the indrustial revolution and specifically about trains. For the sake of clarity I don't live in the USA or UK so I got a different point of view but I think that this still stands: our teacher said "then humans started to be the slaves of time" because now the time of traveling wouldn't be measured in days but in hours and minutes. If you wanted to board the train, you had to be on time. Clocks were becoming more common in homes and slowly but surely specific times took over the home. 5 AM get water from well, 6 AM make breakfest, 9 AM feed the horses etc.

  • @TyphoidBryan
    @TyphoidBryan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nullobite's "Final Song" from the album Pad mentioned is very, very good. Reminds me a bit of In the Nursery. Not sure I'd call it 'strange' or 'unsettling,' per the spirit of the video, but I would call it solid experimental electronic music that would certainly inspire budding screenwriters to finally put their ideas to paper. Nullobite, at least with the album mentioned in the list, seems to be an artist who would do well scoring soundtracks for films.
    Sadly, however, I wasn't a fan of the Telepath project in this list. Not sure what it is, I just didn't connect with it the way I have with his (her?) other works.
    Similarly, the Leyland Kirby album also didn't do it for me. I think I'm spoiled on his Caretaker stuff, to be honest. "We, so tired of all the darkness in our lives" may be the perfect title for the album as it's a much 'brighter' effort than what I tend to like of his work. I think i just prefer the darkness.
    Nevertheless, thanks to Pad for the suggestions!

    Maybe not the same sound as LEYA, but I’m pretty sure they also did some work alongside Liturgy? It’s Black metal with a glorious twist. Diamanda Galas, LINGUA IGNOTA, Moor Mother, Dreamcrusher, and specifically the song “Why You Never Became A Dancer” by Whitehouse if you want some music that’s probably gonna be the most physically and/or mentally brutal stuff you’ve listened to in a while. You could pull almost anything from Xiu Xiu’s discography and you’d have a gem in your ears. If you want to do a deep dive mystery you could look into the reclusive man known as Jandek, and his dissonant acoustic (potential) murder ballads. I tried to listen to his whole discography once, but it’s well over 100 albums, and it’s a bit to handle sometimes. “Naked In The Afternoon” would give you a good idea of why his music is so simple yet kinda terrifying.
