  • It is claimed on the local website that the oldest free-standing timber framed cruck house in Europe is in the small village of Upton Magna in Shropshire.Who knows if that is true, but it is supposed to date back to 1269.
Harriet, Lola and I take a walk around the beautiful village on a cold and grey January afternoon to look at the timber framed houses, the church and old school house.

As far as I remember the forge was at Upton Forge which is off the road from Upton Magna towards Atcham. Just as you pass over the bypass bridge you turn left. At least you use to be able. I have not been down there since they built the M54.

I also live in a Cruck house in the UK, but mine was built around 1427, so yours beats mine by about 160 years. Still it's the oldest house in the village and somehow has managed to avoid being listed, which is weird as a couple of other (newer by historical standards) black + white houses are listed, next door but-one to me. I'm not complaining about that though as it keeps the council's eyes off me.

Very pretty little village. Love the stone church framed by the lychegate. Amazing information & knowledge about the timber-framed cottages. Always did wonder why some were so much more elaborate than others (ie. Little Morten Hall).

The more timber used was a big show of wealth.

About 50 years ago I read an article suggesting that a building in Dronfield, Derbyshire was the oldest cruck building in England. Apparently the cruck timbers have been dated to about 450AD. I did a search recently but found nothing. The long low building is parallel to the church on the other side of Church St and can be best seen on Google sat view as street view is too close. But I think it is not free standing, there are other buildings beside it.

Thank you for all your interesting videos. Could I make a request that you walk around the tree henge you mentioned please?

Hi there - thanks for comments. I gather there is nothing there anymore - ploughed out long ago. According to website I read you can't get into the field either, which is a shame - but there must be a few more tree henges around to explore.

That is a shame, I have never seen a tree henge. When I was younger and could get about I used to spend a lot of time in woods, but I lived in the fens, and it is all reclaimed land there.

I must get up into the fens and do a bit of exploring there. I don't know that area at all.

It's an amazing place, vast skies. The road have to be resurfaced regularly as the bog they are built on keep exerting itself. Makes for a strange canter to the back roads.

      From Wikipedia...
A cruck or crook frame is a curved timber, one of a pair, which supports the roof of a building, used particularly in England. This type of timber framing consists of long, generally naturally curved, timber members that lean inwards and form the ridge of the roof. These posts are then generally secured by a horizontal beam which then forms an "A" shape. Several of these "crooks" are constructed on the ground and then lifted into position. They are then joined together by either solid walls or cross beams which aid in preventing racking (the action of each individual frame going out of square with the rest of the frame, and thus risking collapse).
