  • I am up in Shropshire to meet up with Harriet and her dachshund, Lola. We are exploring Shrewsbury Castle, originally a stronghold built by Roger de Montgomery and later reworked by Thomas Telford.
    I am keen to visit Laura's Tower, or should that be bower? She was the daughter of Sir William Pulteney. The little turret tower looks over the rooftops of this wonderful county town and beyond to the Wrekin and Haughmond Hill.

    I've lived in shrewsbury many years but have never visited the castle, must try harder when the lock down has gone away.

    You're such a treasure, Richard, these walks are excellent. I'm moving home from Canada and Shrewsbury is where I'm thinking of moving to and these history walks with you, Harriet and Lola are such a big help. Stunning place

    What a wonderful video, thank you Mr. Vobes, Harriet and Lola!
    I think you would really enjoy Moreton Corbet Castle, which is just outside Shawbury but it is beautiful and peddled in so much history. You would love it!

    Many houses were knocked down in Shrewsbury to build a railway station but in London it was an unthinkable amount even graveyards were ploughed through I think I'm liking saying somebody wrote the poem about the auful things that were happening

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The graveyards that have vanished under housing estates in unthinkable. I am sure many people living in property have no idea what lies under their floorboards.

    Super, you have shown me places that I have never viewed close up. I like Shrewsbury very much with its English and Welsh Bridges. I trust that they have done something to alleviate the awful seasonal flooding of the River Severn since I was last there. Keep them coming Richard and they are educational even if you think they're not.

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much. I will do my best. Yes the flooding has been sorted pretty much.

    • @simontay4851
      @simontay4851 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flooding certainly hasn't been sorted. In Feb 2020, the river severn reached its highest level ever recorded since records began over 200 years ago. Even smithfield road was badly flooded, usually only frankwell car park floods.

      Btw...can I make a helpful suggestion? Under your videos or playlist, would it be possible that you maybe sort your vids out by their counties? I think it would be easier to find the towns, homes, estates, castles, etc ones looking for, as well as a lot faster.

    How very picturesque, we've really nothing like this in the U.S. we mostly have to look at pick-up trucks and hillabillies with shotguns. But seriously you mentioned the piercing sun, I wish we still had the nice pleasant very much yellow sun like we used to have. Now the sun is this blinding white thing that isn't pleasant at all, I find it quite curious how no-one seems to have noticed this drastic change in the appearance of the sun, oh and the full moon is so very bright white now too, no more silvery moon in fact it almost hurts to look at it.

    Without being too unfair - the entrance to the Castle has a sign saying 'No Dogs Allowed' - that probably included Lola.

    • @RichardVobes

      Actually we saw it on the way out - but was so much taken with the red sandstone we missed the sign. :)

    Having made a few prison visits, I can assure you things are not as the Daily Mail say they are; many cells have more than 3 people sharing ( as opposed to the recommended settings of the Home Office & EU).
    Shrewsbury is a grand place. I was there this summer for a Recovery Walk for people who have recovered from bad lives in the madness of drug or alcohol addictions; I do like the town and pass through that area a lot on Bike Tours of the West Country and Welsh Boarders.
    Bower : references of use - Lord of the Rings J.R.R. Tolken, Canterbury Tales - Pilgrim's Progress G. Chaucer, Can't remember which - Much Ado or Taming of the Shrew. W. Shakespeare.

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I am sure the prisons are really the holiday camps people make out. Thanks for the extra Bower checks! Top man!
