Marillenknödel origin from Bohemia, which used to be part of Austria, and is regarded as the famous home of these dumplings.
Traditionally the sweet dumplings were usually filled with apricots but also with plums, strawberries, or cherries. Nowadays you can also find these these little happiness balls, that´s how they are called also, filled with chocolate or hazelnut spread which are delicious variations.

My Oma lived in Hungary before moving to Germany after WWII. She made them with plums or plum preserves and called them lekvar (dumplings? I forget!)

I love these. My Grandfather used to make these . In October he made them with cooked apples inside. I miss those days. Thank you for reminding me of those happy days.

You must be from Austria :) Did you know that Austrian cuisine is heavily influenced by the Habsburg Monarchy? I believe there's no reason to dispute the origin; the fact is that Marillenknödel are simply delicious!
