- Sometimes you have to push yourself out of your comfort zone! Sometimes you need a big adventure! And sometimes those things coincide with your husband's 30th birthday : ) This was one of the most fun videos we've filmed all year as I especially love celebrating the one I love the most in this world. We make it to Cuttyhunk, an island in Massachusetts, that turns out to be the perfect first adventure away from our summer mooring.
For the last few years, Lou and I have talked about wanting to enter into this new decade aboard our dream sailboat, and I can't believe that we actually managed to make it happen. And a lot of that is due to YOU. Thank you for supporting this channel. Watching our videos and subscribing. For purchasing our ebook Live Creatively and for joining our Patreon family.
We can't believe that our dreams have turned into a reality and we're so happy we get to sharer all the adventures with you each and every Tuesday :)
Sending you all our love,
Dana (& Lou)

When I watch your videos I cheer out loud for you "GO DANA," "GO LOU!"
Happy 30th, Lou! I hope you have a great year as a mariner
Happy Happy Happy Birthday Lou!!! 🎁🎉😎👍
Belated Happy Birthday, Lou! So impressed with what you've done with Penelope, she looks so beautiful, you're knots are well done and she just looks great. What great adventures lie ahead of you!!
As a birthday present for Lou, I have a piece of friendly advice for you. For safety reasons I always prepare the mainsail (halyard, cover etc.) for use as much as possible before I leave the mooring. That way, in case your engine fails you are prepared to switch to sailing fast. Also, it minimizes the time standing on deck while driving the boat thus not blocking the view or being tossed around by the boom. Think you guys are doing a great job in getting to know open water and learning to sail!
Agree with getting sails ready before leaving mooring. Furthermore you should hank your halyards then use one loop for frapping and then through the hank leaving a loop to hang onto cleat. Enjoying your adventure and looking forward in seeing you grow in your experience
Bravo, been sailing for years... still learning. Keep it up!
Happy B day Lou!!!!
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Lou, Happy birthday dear Wild We Roam, you two are so cool! Happy adventuring xxxx
A great way to get better at tacking is to try doing without using the rudder (or minimal use of the rudder) and just using the steering power of the sails. Not every boat will make is without using the rudder but it’s a great and fun way to play with your boat.
Happy birthday lou!
Happy Birthday Lou! 🕯🕯🕯x 10=🤠🤩🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶⛵ i gotta say u kids are kinda scaring me! Please continue for a yr or 2 hugging the shoreline & paying close attention to the weather. Glad you have patrons supporting you& hopefully sending you to safety first Captains school. You just cant be too prepared these days! Godspeed thru the rest of your Saturn return with flying colors Lou! Dana girl you got some courage like Catherine Hepburn on the african queen!
Happy Birthday to Lou!!
Happy birthday Lou...
Happy Birthday Lou!
U2 are gutsy going out with limited experience. I guess that's one way to learn. You should look into some boating safety courses thru the US Power Squadron or sailing lesson if you plan on hitting the deep blue open waters cause when thing go wrong it can go very fast. & Lou, being color blind could be a big deal out on the water. The buoys are shaped differently. These are the types of thing you could learn in a boating safety classes.
I'm offering this as constructive advise and not criticizing you.
Good luck and happy sailing
I do not know anything about sailing. Please, please take this advice and take a boating safety course. 😊💕
Haven't they been doing this on- line and through books?
@@designdoctor247 I just don't think there is such a think as Too much information that can be got when entering into potentially life threatening situations.
These 2 are admittedly beginners and want to cruise the Caribbean. Every time I watch their blobs I am envious of them but scared for them as well.
@@designdoctor247 🤦🏻♀️ 🤦🏻♀️ You do realize theory and experience are two different , things, right? Maybe you don’t. People with long term sailing experience keep telling them to take safety classes, yet they haven’t bothered. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Dana & Lou, have watched them a long time (van days), but the sea is nothing to mess with.
My relative’s friend died in a possibly preventable accident at 29 yrs old on open water. He had a medical emergency (was having severe headaches on the water) and wasn’t wearing a life jacket. Who knows why he wasn’t wearing one that day, because he knew to do so. He fell overboard when he had sudden onset of blinding head pain. They have never found his body due to deep undercurrents. Found out after the fact from the coast guard, that that particular area is very dangerous deep under the surface. I am no sailor, but You can’t be too prepared for any kind of emergency on the ocean. Taking classes can’t hurt, and will only help.
Like other subscribers, I am happy Dana & Lou are living their dream, but am concerned at the same time that they could be preparing better through courses. No one is invincible when facing Mother Nature’s unpredictability.
How are we sure they haven't??? They don't show us every min of what they do.
Happy bday Lou looked like an awesome day 🍷❤👍
You two should alternate pulling sails and taking the helm. That way you both are comfortable with all aspects of your boat.⛵️⛵️⛵️
Enjoy yourself..
Happy 30th Lou ⛵️
Good job you guys, and Happy born day Lou.

Happy Birthday Lou!!! I hope that you had an awesome day.
Well done with your "man overboard" excercise.
Happy Happy Birthday Lou. Lots of warm wishes from South Africa 🥳
Lou/Dana. You guys are really coming along. Pre flight che kleist and everything. Add to it as you experience things. Only way to go! We have lists for Leaving the Boat at Anchor, Leaving the Boat at a Dock and the Getting Underway which are laminated and mounted at the nav station. We use them without fail. Really helps because there can be so many interferences that can end up in simple annoyances or even catastrophes. Anyway, good stuff. You two are all over it. Love your vids and Lou Happy BD!. Capt Kaz
Happy belated Birthday Lou, Happy you guys are living the dream!

Happy birthday Lou! Many blessings to y’all ✌️🌞❤️
happy birthday lou from australia
Well done Wild we roam!
Your channel has improved so much since you bought the boat! More B-roll less talking heads, lovely drone shots...lots of water and sail shots!
If I remember my sailing days, charts always show the mean low tide water depth,...so perhaps you entered that bay at high tide which would explain the difference. In certain parts of the American East coast, tides can run up to over 40 feet (for example the Bay of Fundy in Canada)
Happy 30th!
Cheers
Woo Hoo!
We have not been to Cuttyhunk yet but we have friends who say it is their favorite place in the area.
Are you guys going to try anchoring overnight soon? If you are going south the mooring fields are not all that common along the way, although they are what nearly all the cruisers who stay at places like Vero Beach and Marathon use when there. Be careful of Vero Beach. Everyone calls it Velcro Beach because once you are there you don't want to leave all winter.
Anchoring is way better than a mooring, and WAAAAY better than a slip or dock at a marina. Not only is anchoring free, but you oftentimes get an area all to yourselves. It's like the difference between staying at a KOA campground in your van or boondocking in a clearing on fantastic land in the middle of the forest usually all by yourselves, or just other like-minded cruisers to hang out with nearby.
Welcome to the wonderful upwind performance of a Rasmus. You can always motorsail. The Rasmus was really designed as a motorsailor, but when you do it always be sure to keep the degree of heel to a minimum. Read the manual for your engine so you know the exact maximum amoint of lean at the engine so the oil pump can keep the insides fed with it without getting destroyed by oil starvation. Diesel engines are expensive to rebuild/replace and running without a steady oil flow is a fast way to do it it.
great birthday lou...you need a tiller or extension..or some device to the helm to steer. The Bimini seems to block your sailing view
Thanks for the video. Fun to watch, like always. And ... Alles Gute zum Geburtstag! Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland! 😃
Happy belated birthday Lou. 💐💐🎂
Happy Birthday, Lou!!!! I’ll say it again....you two radiate JOY!!

Happy Birthday Lou. Hope all your
dreams come true. Love to you
and Dana.
Hat overboard! Happy birthday, Lou.
Thanks Maxwell! I already lost one hat that way, glad we saved this one ; ) --Lou
If I may offer one little piece of advise? When towing your dink, run a 2nd slightly longer line from your boat to your dink as a "spare". Once down in the Bahamas a friend was towing his dink, the line snapped/frayed and he didn't know it and he lost his "wheels". From that day on I always had a second safety line.
Birthday Skills! ❤🎉
You two are just the sweetest! Dave and I love watching you guys. We love your love! The filming was amazing, as always. You tell such a great story each video :) happy birthday!
That cut at 0:37 was smooooothhh! You go, Lou
Thanks! I almost didn't keep it because it felt too fast but now I'm glad I did ; ) --Lou
What an awesome way to celebrate turning 30! ⛵🎈🎂

Happy Birthday Lou! Congrats to you both for your first overnight! I know that's a big accomplishment.
Happy Birthday... and all the best!
Cheers! :-)
Happy Birthday. Great save on the hat!
What an amazing way to spend a birthday! Thank you again for sharing your days with us :)
Happy Birthday, Lou!!!! What a way to celebrate! 🎉
Happy birthday neighbor you are only down the road for me ..
Also, I would keep a board or two in the companion way if you are worried about swamping, but tying your hatch closed makes emergency equipment, radio, first aid out of easy reach. Also radio should be on 16 at all times while under way. These are all things learned the hard way...
Loved this one sooo much! Love how you share your true selves, not acting asif you know it all but show us your learning curve and sharing that sometimes it is hard or scary to sail a boat.
Sweet vid !! ... Happy birthday Lou 🎂👊⛱🍻🚣
Amazing video as always! Happy BDAY LOU! thanks to the two of u for inspiring me to get a van and make my own channel
Happy birthday Lou! You are so supportive of your adventures side by side with Dana. I am really happy for you too. Bytheway... My name is Duarte, and I am from Portugal! I am watching you guys and supporting your videos with all these incredible people. Congratulations! :)
Happy birthday 🎂🎈🎇🎂
Such an amazing and beautiful film... ✨🥳
It’s a pleasure to watch your vids. Reminds me of my wife and I learning to sail, and, we are still married!!!!!
🤣
Hi Guys a few tips:
3'40" Sheeting in: When you pull the headsail on you need a full wrap on the winch. I can see you've only got a half wrap on. In any more wind the sail will just pull out of your hand while you are trying to hold it and fumble to get extra turns on the winch drum. Put another turn or two on which will make this so much easier. Then as you need to wind the winch handle quickly put one more wrap on the winch drum and wind in the final turns. More turns means more resistance. Also stand further aft behind the winch. It will twist your body so that your shoulders are getting close to right-angles to the centre line of the boat. That means you can see more going on forward and even to windward of you. Thats where all the action is rather than behind you.
4'50" Genoa tack: The halyard is either too loose and needs more tension or the genoa tack is too far aft. The bearing point or load on the tack is therefore up where the sail enters the luff track. There is no strength here. The strength is in the actual tack where the webbing and extra layers of sail cloth are. I can see the wrinkles in the sail which indicates the bearing point is the luff not the tack. To fix this add halyard tension or use a smaller tack shackle or even get your sailmaker to increase the tack cut back. This is quite important.
Genoa sheet: I can see on your boat as you furl the genoa in the sheet angle is going up the leech not along the foot where it should. If you sheet up the leech it doesnt pull the sail and make the sail shape flatter it makes the sail deeper and worse trim. To fix it you need to sheet further aft. Meaning the block on the deck should be on a track. The more furled the further aft. Two blocks can be used on the genoa track so you can release the forward one. Talk to a sailmaker or someone experienced to find a solution.
5'20" Tacking: Lou when you released the sheet you took the sheet turns off the winch drum then lifted up and dropped the remainder of the sheet tail over the cockpit combing. This is really bad because it will, pull the tail away from you and either go overboard in the water (which could then get caught under the boat- even in the prop), or get caught up in a bunch at the turning block which will stop the sheet easing out. You need to leave the tail in the cockpit floor. When you release you can even leave one turn on the winch. What happens when you need to tack again quickly? You dont have time to leave the cockpit to go find the sheet tail then re run it through all the blocks & fairleads.
Oversteering in the tack: Turn the wheel slower going into the tack. It will only need up to a quarter turn, or at most, half of the wheel to begin the tack. Then as the bow passes through the eye of the wind you should be slowly turning the wheel back to where you had it before the tack. You were almost gybed before you even started to turn the wheel back to the middle.
5'45 to 6'20" Bimini: While you are learning to sail you need to take the bimini down so you can see the sails. I can see you, are leaning out, ducking down, to see around the bimini. You also need to feel the wind on your face as a beginner.
Close hauled: Pull pull your sails on harder and you'll be able to sail closer to the wind. By sheeting further aft on the headsail you will be able to pull the sail in harder. Get some tell tails on the genoa and learn how to use them. Only use wool not the very light spinnaker cloth ones. Cut two 1" diameter circles of dacron sticky back and a 7" length of wool. Stick 3/4" of the wool under the sticky back and stick it on the sail about 1'6" back from the luff. If you furl in you may need a second row of tell tales that are a further 1'6" further aft.
Good luck
When tacking the helmsman could release the working sheet once the genoa starts to back then with 2 turns on the preloaded on the lazy sheet the other one can immediately pull the genoa through and this way be faster tacking. Enjoy seeing you gaain experience
Aww 😊😿😊😊😊 I'm so touched & so inspired to celebrate my 30th birthday this way eventhough I don't know how to sail 😄 I learned a shipknot when I was 7, but don't remember it, so yeah that won't be much of a help, but I can always learn 🙂 thank you guys so much for sharing this experience 🙏 I admire your guts & your openess 😇 I hope your wish comes through, man 🙏
Happy Birthday Lou!
This was one of my favorite videos yet!! So wonderfully serene! You both know how to take it easy which I admire so much! I hope I can get there someday! Happy Birthday Lou! 😊🎉
Happy birthday, Lou!! So happy for you guys! Loved the editing!
Happy birthday great vlog 👍🏴👍
Happy birthday Lou! I’m loving these longer boating videos! Makes me want to get out sailing again!
Happy Birthday, Lou!
I hope you’ll share the recipe for Lou’s birthday meal, looks delicious 😋
Beautiful!!! Happy 30th Birthday Lou!!!💝💝💝
Hey guys! I own a Rasmus 35 as well. Hull #216. The problem with the Rasmus to weather is that she only draws 4 feet and she doesn't point well at all. With the shallow draft, you'll also make considerable leeway going to weather in any significant wind speed. Make amends for that if your sailing on a lee shore. I'm sure you know all this. She won't take through quickly... but she'll get you there.
So happy to see you all get your boat out! Congrats you two! Now into that horizon.
Happy birthday Lou from Australia
Happy birthday!!
Just a comment, try not to coil your main halyard when the sail is up, just in case you need to drop it quickly for some reason, so you don't get stuck.
Good on you both. You guys are doing great developing your skills and confidence thanks for sharing
Beautiful video, the footage you’ve captured is always so aesthetically pleasing and inspiring! I know nothing about sailing but it would be interesting to watch a q and a video where you two address some of the questions or advice being given about sailing below. I’d love to hear how it’s going so far and what your sailing plans are for winter.
