Fun fact - Geoff never actually wanted to be a bass. He wanted to be more of a rock baritone/ tenor. But ya know when you've got that range..they're gonna use it lol
Fun fact it was Tim who incouraged him to be just a bass while in the second season of the sing off
It's funny to hear Geoff mention how he wanted to sing like Chris Cornell and hear that pang of disappointment all while he's got the most velvety smooth bass range of almost any other singer I've heard except maybe for Avi Kaplan.
Meanwhile I sound like I'm singing into a rusty bucket.

Also, Geoff inspired me to sing again (I am a bass myself), although I am nowhere near as skilled as he is. Yet 👻
Also, a request if I may from the best reactor: VoicePlay "This is Halloween".
Learn subharmonics. As a tenor with a fairly lowish range, i've been able to hit super low notes thanks to subharmonics. It's difficult at first, but with lots of practice you can hit crazy low notes. Geoff actually uses them often and actually uses it on the final note of this song.

But it has to be mentioned, that the E1 in this is not Growl, Geoff seems a bit more comfortable in his subharmonics I guess. His subharmonics are just awesome!

@@camctrail yes, but much more depth and power. This one sends a shiver up your spine. The other a shudder.
There's so much talent on display you almost have to react twice - once for Geoff's performance and another time for the backing vocals. The synchronized arpeggios and off-beat rhythms are incredible.

This is one of my favorite Voice Play songs.
Geoff (pronounced Jeff) is a beast. That B1 is just a chest note. He doesn’t have to switch to subharmonics until around an A1 (at least that’s when he usually does). The 1st subharmonic register extends ones range 1 octave down, and he’s hit some B0s, but I haven’t heard and A0s... yet.
Mark Rosenthal he’s getting better and more consistent now with his low chest notes and doesn’t need to use subharmonic until about F#1 now (even tho he can sing D2-D1 in subharmonics)👍 Not hating just pointing some stuff out.

Two words: HEADLESS HORSEMAN. As a fellow bass who has been singing for several years, what he does in that song (and also here), is almost vocally absurd.
It's pronounced "Jeff", and you MUST react to his solo video of "Blackbird".

+10000 for blackbird. It's literally the largest range I've heard from one person labeled as a 'baritone' in my life. And makes my eyes leak every time I hear it
This bass is the best I have heard in ages. The man goes down into the basement, pauses and goes deeper. I love his cover of 16 tons. His range is unreal.... Extra lately Maggie?? These folks are darn good. Darn GOOD.
The Little Mermaid medley is where it's at. You will love his range and the great singing of everyone else as well! I've probably heard it at least 50 times with no exaggeration. Can't help it. I love and appreciate quality music!
The tenor (I'm still learning their names too) really gets to shine on "Boy Bands in 5 mins". He's incredible. The contrast between him and Geoff so cool.

@Robertson Thirdly Moana is definitely a good one, but I would have to respectfully disagree with the comparison. The Little Mermaid Medley gives Layne a melodic line to sing which is a rare treat, and as J None is now in the group and Earl has left, it's a little more true to the sound they now have. The whole arrangement is longer than most of their songs so they all get longer moments to shine. That all being said, why limit yourself? go ahead and watch them both, you will not be disappointed.

Obviously having seen the song first myself I always love watching a reactor knowing what’s coming in imagining what the reaction is going to be his name is pronounced Jeff and he does have amazing range he learned a lot of his base techniques from Tim Foust of Home Free as Jeff says in one of his videos Tim is simply the master when it comes to bass

The absolute insane part is he is in his chest voice for his highest notes and most of his lows. That range is absolute insanity.
But also the other members are incredible too. Listening to the voice acting and all the little inflections, vocal tricks, and harmonies is really impressive when you focus on each individual.

And I too became sorta obsessed with him and the entire group. They are all incredibly talented and their voice acting & acting is a big WOW. I've been watching everything of theirs since. You should react to their cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love" Geoff does the arrangement and it's amazing.
I recommend that one as well, or Bridge Over Troubled Water. Gorgeous harmonies, intricate partwork, and the contrast between their normal, lyrical voices and the character voices they do in videos like Oogie Boogie becomes even more amazing.

that dudes voice range is absolutely insane
Geoff is a vocal monster, his range is amazing. He is the best bass I have heard in many years. As you are about to watch and hear. The other artists do their parts well too. People singing at this level is good for my soul. For the last several months, or has it turned into years so much of the news/ society has been a big crap sandwich. I am tired of people telling me it's OK, go ahead and eat it. Locate and please listen to Big Bad John. I first heard Ernie Ford do this tune way back in the day. Near the end, they left you speechless. Yes my dear they are that GOOD.

I love VoicePlay and I loved your reaction to this video. The tall guy with the beard who hit the high character voice is Earl Elkins. He has recently left the group for personal reasons, but I love him in all of their videos. VoicePlay was on Season 4 of the Sing Off with Home Free. We've all done it -- stared in shock at the screen, except that most of us don't have the knowledge (or the phone apps) to know exactly what notes he was hitting, and then replayed it a few more times to make sure we heard what we thought we heard, and then started searching for reactions to the video to see if other people were having the same kind of shocked faces we were! LOL You're perfect and we love you!

Oh I enjoyed this so much - soon as I saw you'd reacted to this video, I knew it was going to be A Journey for you. And so it was, and will be. :-)
And yeah, this is the example I was talking about in my comment about subharmonics on your Home Free "Ring of Fire" reaction. I think Geoff's first B1 in this video is probably chest/fry or growl - it's too agile for subharmonics - but yeah his final B1 and E1 are definitely subharmonic. He learned the subharmonic E1 specifically for this song, when they wanted a more dramatic finish than Geoff just coming back up to E2 like Thurl Ravenscroft did. And he performs that E1 live in concert too, so mad respect for that. Geoff's amazing.
I'm guessing you didn't quite believe me about that E1, and hey that's pretty reasonable. Now you know, and we got to see you go through the process of dealing with that note. ^_^

My hubby has commented several times that I've watched this video 10k times lol but I have to tell him that no its everyones reaction to it that I'm watching. They just released "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" today and have videos for "This is Halloween" and "What's This?" from Nightmare Before Christmas. Also, they released "Superstitious" recently and Geoff released "Headless Horseman" on his own channel, all very nice for this time of year. Pentatonix also performed "Making Christmas", Peter Hollens did "Spooky Scary Skeletons", and The Hound + The Fox released an original song "Rot Next to You" in the style of Morticia and Gomez Addams if you want different performers to react to.

The E1 is subharmonics, the rest is chest voice. Just go look through his channel, he's done some explanations as to how he does that. He recently did Headless Horseman as well, it is fantastic.
