    This video is about Ned's epic dream scene in 'Game of Thrones', the first book of 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. This dream scene will be included in season 6 of the HBO TV show.
    The video is illustrated by Fantasy Flight Games drawings and fans drawings published in the internet. The reading is the voice of Roy Dotrice from the 'Game of Thrones' audio book. Music used:
    * "Les Mémoires Blessées" by Dark Sanctuary
    * "Libera Me" from "Interview with the Vampire" soundtrack
    * "Ignis Fatuus" by Torrey Desmond Rogers
    * "Harpa Maledicere" by PP music ("Burn this city" album)
    Ned is dreaming about an event that took place years before the story began, just after the mad king was killed. Ned and his companions reach a tower in Dorne where his sister Lyanna is found together with 3 of the kingsgaurd. Ned is talking with them, trying to understand why they are there and why they were neither near the king who was killed in King's Landing, nor near Rhaegar (the king's first son) who was killed in the Battle of the Trident, nor with the queen (pregnant with Daenerys) and young Viserys (the king's second son) who fled to Dragonstone. When Ned reached his dying sister he promised her something unknown...

      Agreed so much! I just watched the HBO version a 2nd time and only a few moments of the sword fight are impressive. I've rewatched this video over and over - and it's still perfect every time. Of course, it's hard to translate the epic style of narration into a visual scene, but they still did such a poor job. The dialogue is all circumcised and awkward. There's no tension, no build-up. No romance. The actors aren't great, but whoever directed them is at fault really.

    This dream has a certain poetic beauty to it, with all the dialogue.
    ”Ser Willem Darry is fled to Dragonstone, with your queen and Prince Viserys. I thought you might have sailed with him.”
    ”Ser Willem is a good man and true,” said Ser Oswell.
    ”But not of the Kingsguard,” Ser Gerold pointed out. “The Kingsguard does not flee.”
    ”Then or now,” said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm.
    ”We swore a vow,” explained old Ser Gerold.
    Ned’s wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow swords in hand. They were seven against three.
    ”And now it begins,” said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light.
    ”No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice, “now it ends.”

    TOJ had three legendary kings guard, ancient proud houses, a most famous sword, and it brought many pieces of the story together, both past and present with their conversation. It gave so much context to Ned, Howland Reed, Jamie Lannister killing the mad king with his golden sword, viserys & daenerys fleeing dragonstone, and how epic the kingsuard once was. What we received from the show was a butchery of one the top three most critical parts of the story-line of the entire book, the last battle where past became present, and we learn the origin of both fire & ice. "...and he would have killed me but for Howland Reed"

      +Elvin Khudiyev No, that is a cheep answer, he may be over hating or something but that its not a valid answer. Well at least for the Daynes the whole history of that house is based in Dawn sword its literaly in their banners so it actually hurts a lot. At least the Dayne part seems to be a mess for now.

    • @TheBlackLantern34
      @TheBlackLantern34 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Catelyn Tully Well they're not going to do the Daynes in the show (at least not fully), which is why Dawn wasn't included, it wouldnt have mattered and it wouldnt have shown that Arthur Dayne was the greatest fighter in westeros in just a short scene if he only had 1 OP looking sword. Then it would just seem like hes winning because of Dawn.

    • @catelyntully9494
      @catelyntully9494 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      XenonSpark Well that is the whole point of it to some extent, as George said Dawn makes a diference, and Bran could have talked about how his father told the sword was made from a meteorite. It could have been enough. Then show the 2 v 6 (or 3 v 7 like in the book if you want to) and Ned didn't needed to be a super great warrior who 1 v 1 one of the Kingsguard. Don't get me wrong i understand many changes but i also understand that they butchered something really important about House Dayne, at least they didn't made Ned kill Arthur.

    I always found it interesting that "7 against 3" is repeated twice in the dream sequence. As if Martin hints at something. These numbers are prominent in the story...7 realms, 7 gods of the New, 3-headed dragon (prophecy), the 3 betrayals of Dany. Could be hinting that the 7 realms will not kneel to the three-headed dragon but rather resist it/them.

    • @Meisekitani
      @Meisekitani 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They already did once, it's commonly referred to as the War of Conquest.
      The 7 Kingdoms also refers to the state of Westeros as it was at the beginning of said war. The Kingdom of Rivers and Hills had been conquered by first the Stormlords, and then the Iron Islands, making it the Kingdom of Isles and Rivers.
      If you include the Crownlands, the 7 Kingdoms are currently 9 :V

    I love how there's this underlying feeling of nostalgia for "better times" throughout the series where the knights of the realm were as honourable as they come. It's all shown through dreams and dialogue so of course the reader would be seeing it through the character's bias. And they compare it to the events happening around them such as one of the Kingsguard surrendering Prince Tommen to sellswords without even drawing their sword.

    This scene is GRRM at his best - the hints and story that are conveyed hidden behind the words.
    A simple question like Ned asking why the Kingsguard were not with Rhaegar reveals so much given the context of what we know now; Rhaegar had sent these men to the tower of joy to protect his heir, the rightful King. The Kingsguard died undertaking a task which they were honour bound to do. Otherwise, not knowing this detail, Ned is right to question why they were away from the 'Battle of the Trident' and the prince they should have been protecting; a 'dishonour' in the eyes of honourable Ned Stark.
    Its little tidbits like this which were hugely prevalent in the first book(s) which over time got a little watered. I think GoT shows what GRRM can do with a clear vision, unfortunately that seems to more 'roaming' (or cultivated to use his gardener analogy) in the later books. There seems to be a lot more placing things in the book which are 'cool' rather than overly important to the plot.

      Jesus, that ought to be the most cringeworthy thing I've ever written on this site. Well, it is one of my favorite parts in ASOIAF and I think the show absolutely didn't do it justice. If I would guess, because they weren't that interested in investing in a seemingly mundane fight scene, which is a thing that a good writer with attention to detail wouldn't do, like George hasn't done.
      There was none of the mystique and surreal atmosphere, even though it happened on a vision. The knights looked as mundane and unnapealing as they could ever, and of course, because why not, removing an already pretty good dialogue in order to bother writing a new one that weren't even as good.
      Oh well. If I would bother reflecting on why the show turned the way it did for every scene I would go mad, but I don't even care anymore. The show's over. The books aren't, and I'm interested in those...

    "Our knees do not bend easily" ...."The Kingsguard does not flee". That's loyalty, ladies and gentlemen. The war was over. It was likely that the Usurper would have accepted them back into the Kingsguard had they wished this. But they chose their honor and their loyalty to the true King (at this point Viserys who was not yet a monster) over their comfort, or even their lives.

    • @redmanofdoom937
      @redmanofdoom937 ปีที่แล้ว

      Their loyalty was to Rhaegar's heir Jon, not Viserys. That's why they were still guarding the Tower and not with Viserys on Dragonstone.

    • @Mark-xh8md
      @Mark-xh8md ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@redmanofdoom937 - Well, no. They were still guarding the Tower, because they had been ordered to do so by Rhaegar, and no command had come from either King's Landing (from Aerys) or Dragonstone (from Rhaella as Viserys' regent) to countermand that order.
      Even if we go by the show's version (we don't know the "real" story yet, because the book series isn't finished), the last legitimate King (Aerys) ascended Viserys to the status of heir apparent.
      Meaning that on Aerys' death, the crown passed to Viserys, who was indeed proclaimed King on Dragonstone.

      ***** Than you don't know Westerosi history very well. The Taragaryens married brothers to sisters, and had only been in Westeros for 300 years. When there was no other option available they would marry outside there house. But that has only happened 3 - 4 times. There's most definitely no bloodline connecting any Lannister with a Taragaryen.

    • @Meisekitani
      @Meisekitani 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rutger Holtzer They married out a bit more than that i believe, at least five matches with house Velaryon, three with house Martell, the first Viserys was married to an Arryn and later Allicent Hightower, and Maegor had 8-9 wives, among them Jeyne Westerling, Alys Harroway and Tyanna of Pentos.
      The intermarriages weren't exclusively brother-sister either: Rhaenyra's second husband was her uncle.
      But indeed, no Lannister-Targaryen connection as of yet.
