2:20 - While Stephen Benton Elkins got Elkins named after him, Henry Gassaway Davis got at least two and probably three places in WV named after him. Henry was a station name and siding on the Western Maryland Thomas Subdivision about 45 miles north of Elkins. I assume it was named after HGD. Gassaway is on what was once the Coal and Coke / B&O / CSX Elk River line (now gone). Gassaway was a major shop on the old C&C and the station building still stands today. Davis is in Tucker County and was serviced by a short WM branch off the Thomas Sub; it was originally called the Davis Branch but was cut back in the 1940s when the logging played out. In later years what was left was called the Francis Branch.
History tells us that Stephen B Elkins was a stanch Republican and Henry G Davis was a just-as-staunch Democrat, but due to a marriage between the families, the two fellows found a way to get along and work for the betterment of West Virginia, including founding D&E College. Politicians today could learn a thing or two from these giants.

We just biked the High Point Greenway this weekend! You must try it. It's about 5 miles long, and 1/2 mile of it is wooden rails over the swamp. It was a $5 million dollar investment! I thought you'd like to know about it!

As a matter of fact...the Allegheny Highlands Trail goes through Elkins. But I didn't have my bike with me. And time constraints...
