    Well I just found a 1992 bottling of this for $90. I’m one and done with Cragganmore because their pricing has gone through the roof even before the tariffs. Can’t wait to try it and thanks for this fun honest review. The tasting notes help.

    After visiting Islay, I’ve taken a break from real peaty whisky for awhile, so this sounds like one to try with that nose and finish. I used to have a bottle and remember liking it. A little pricey

      definitely a good one if you're wanting a break from peat.

    The scotch god might not have used the same words that I would use, but he has a point. Asking for patreon support and making a point of being independent does not go well with recieving bottles from the brand rep. By giving you a free bottle It is clear that Highland Park sees you as a way of marketing. And if thay see it that way, how can you/we see it any other way?

    I believe that Ralfy's thought was: some Distilleries may release slightly higher quality whiskies in limited edition packaging or around the holiday season so that when people try gift whiskies they're more likely to go out and buy another bottle.

    Diageo Distiller's Editions are usually delicious! The first one I ever had was the Glenkinchie finished in Amontillado casks, then I had the Talisker, the Lagavulin, the Clynelish, and the Dalwhinnie. None of them were in plentiful supply, and on three occasions I bought the first and only bottle I ever saw... They are scarce commodities! I never did see the Cragganmore edition, and I looove Cragganmore! Yes, Highland Park Magnus is a decent whisky given the price... I like it a lot.

    Cragganmore is great, my honeymoon was in Scotland. I highly recommend visiting the distillery if in Speyside, the distillery exclusive bottle is incredible! It was also the best tasting that I did in Scotland, mainly due to the lady had so much knowledge about Scotland distilleries and their offerings.
    Cheers!

    Dummies, Enjoyed this review and especially the shout out discussion. Everyone has an opinion and how can you know the history of what you get. Did the manufacturer send you a "honey barrel", W(ho)TF knows. Variations exist and are what makes up life. You handled in a very professional manner. Keep them coming!! Cheers!

    In 2016 the whisky bible came out from Jim Murray, whisky of the year was Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. Crown... whisky of the year? It was shocking and it sold and sold and sold how many bottles did it sell from that review? Everyone was shocked and everyone went out and bought it but Not a single reviewer agreed with Jim on the whisky it self not a single one. No one was wowed by it, it was a passible Rye at best and at worst it was very very hot. Everyone knows Jim takes samples from companys Did Jim get a rigged sample or was he just ultra drunk when he tasted that one? Yeah no such thing as reviewer samples. I am not even saying you got a reviewer sample maybe you did maybe it was just the first batch syndrome that often happens. The first batch is very very often the best and then quality goes down from there thats why NAS are very much disliked. 40% alcohol and kicks like a mule this is coming from an experianced Scotch drinker. Trust me we did not have the same batch or bottling. I still like you guys, I was annoyed and I wanted to let you know thats it. At the end of the day its my fault, I bought the bottle.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You left out the most popular option in that Jim may have gotten $$$$

    I know a few folk in the industry who have vouched for the fact that it is common in the industry to choose slightly nicer bottlings (maybe the brand ambassador or master blender preview the batch to make sure it speaks well for the brand and expression) for reviewers and especially for competitions. Are they always painstakingly selecting individual casks or bespoke cask blendings of their whiskies? No. It's often, like I mentioned, just some higher up person checking the quality of the batch that is to be sent out. It's understandable, as it's in the best interest of their brand. Are you mindless shills for taking a sample for review under the caveat that you be allowed to form your own opinion of the product? Hell, no. I admire Ralfy's dedication to his independence, but I understand that being an online whisky reviewer is an expensive pursuit. How are you two to know when a sample sent to you is an unbiased sample indicative of the expression at large or a quality controlled, slightly more favorable sample? You can't. It's why I double check reviews against other reviews. Perhaps the critical gentleman would like to know about Whiskybase? It's a very helpful collection of a diversity of reviews and tasting notes. Your input is, as always, also appreciated. Cheers, gents!

    Scott, your scoring continues to baffle me. A 90 and you wouldn't buy again? So, a cask strength Craggenmore would be a 95? I can't get or afford this so I'd be happy to take it off your hands. Bourbon shootout 2 please.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      its a good whiskey but for a 40% around $90 or so, there are a lot of whiskies out there! If I scored it lower it would only because I knew the price of it. I tried to not let it influence my tasting of the whisky.

    • @Andrew-lb1up
      @Andrew-lb1up 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would suggest that the "I wouldn't buy it," statement is much more important than any score. I find scores too abstract and ambiguous. For example, when Scott, in an early video, pours out the bottle of Knob Creek Maple syrup flavor (just kidding Smoked Maple), that told me more than any score would have.

      Not everyone has a big budget so when you hear complaining about low proof it's off putting. I've been drinking whisky for 30 years and have experienced my idea of a 90 a few times. If scores mean nothing why use them? Stop scoring.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielmcevoy976 What I'm trying to say is that if we could get this for $50 I would buy it again as it is a good whiskey, and some people can buy it in that range. For $90 in our market...I'm not buying it again. Another example would be Macallan 18 which is a great whiskey, but overpriced. At almost $300 a bottle now I would rate it very high (higher than 90) and say the same thing...Its good but I wouldn't buy it again. Price the Macallan 18 similar to most other 18 year olds and I would buy it again.
