From T.S. Eliot: "Time past and time future Allow but a little consciousness. To be conscious is not to be in time But only in time can the moment in the rose-garden, The moment in the arbour where the rain beat, The moment in the draughty church at smoke fall Be remembered; involved with past and future. Only through time time is conquered." Thank you, T.S. Eliot --- A. Duart Maclean
His humility was real - I think he was self-conscious about his lack of formal education. Yet he was as proud of his literary accomplishments as his 'day job'. How welcome he was in their midst that night. Won't heaven be like this I think it will be.
The reason Groucho chose Gus the cat for this was because though he and Eliot would go at it, they achieved a true bond of friendship when they found out each other loved cats.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Groucho! By the way, in the Broadway musical "Cats," this poem (Gus, the theatre cat) was followed immediately by the story of "Growl-tiger" (the pirate-cat!) which worked supremely well as a 2-part saga. I strongly recommend it if you don't know it. It's great!
Eliot was a Marx Brothers fan and Groucho and Eliot corresponded for a while. They eventually met in London a few months before the poet's death.
Wish I could've been a cat in the room. What a glorious meet. Thanks for this.
All Eliot wanted to talk about when they met was the Marx Brothers and all Groucho wanted to talk about was Eliot's work. (He was quite an Eliot fan.)
@timphares3061 But Groucho did say they certainly both shared a great liking for cats.
Groucho talked about this night during his "farewell" Carnegie Hall performance. It was preserved in a double album titled, "An Evening with Groucho."
Wonderful! I have been wanting to hear this for SO many years. Thank you so very much.
Absolute gold. Thank you so much for putting this out there. X
What a gem. Thanks for posting.
How wonderful! Thank you.

Thank Lawrence for that passage from Eliot.
The man was brilliant in disparate forums because he had a feel for language and an obvious love of it.

I liked the quick Groucho giggle.
My favorite comedy team meets my favorite poet.
The greatest of them all
The two of them had it covered.
gracias
They're still a hipper room in the UK than we'll ever be here in the US.
