My Dad still talks about seeing him 60 years ago. Played every instrument on stage. Danced up a storm.
Says it was one of the best shows he ever saw, and my Dad saw all the greats of the 40's and 50's

How many people realize it's really a song about a man grieving the death, loss of his dog. He fell apart after his " dog up and died" he never recovered. Great song with the rhyming style , rhyme inside a rhyme.

@@mikeyates7931 Hard to pick one, so many talented performers, especially from years ago. Bobby Darin was another one, he could sing, dance, act, do parody, he oozed charisma. Don't agree with your other picks. Anyway we all have different taste, there is no right or wrong. He was in Melbourne for a series of concerts and he was due to come into the Channel 9 TV studios to be interviewed live after one of his concerts. The interview was to be at the end of a live TV variety show. Sammy said would you like a song or two? He performed for a hour live, Channel 9 delaying the news and other programme and just let him run. A fabulous entertainer.

I guess they didn't call him "The World's Greatest Entertainer" for nothing; he could do it all. He must have been 59 or 60 here (b. 1925).His vocals were even more impressive considering he was a pretty heavy cigarette smoker, which ultimately killed him. The song is about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who danced with little Shirley Temple in those movies of the 30's. If you want a kick, check him out at 8 years old in the 1933 movie short, "Rufus Jones for President."

Sammy was the best. While on vacation in the Bahamas with my parents in the late 60s, I noticed that Sammy was playing the nightclub at the resort. I begged my Dad to take me to his show. My Dad actually did, so I saw Sammy perform when I was 8 or 9 years old. Sammy was so fantastic. And I’ll never forget seeing his family poolside next to where my Mom was sitting. Sammy Davis Junior's office was at
9000 Sunset in Los Angeles California. My uncle Peter Heine was director of advertising for Billboard Magazine on the top floor of 9000 Sunset. Sammy had the floor below
Billboard, the floor below that was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.
Peter would always talk about how he became friends with Sammy Davis Jr. in the elevator. He said that Sammy was a truly nice person.
One time we got off on Sammy's floor to visit Sammy, but Sammy wasn't there. So I didn't get to meet him in person. I would have like to very much. Maybe next time.

Fil I've heard this song countless times but this is the first time I "got it" (even before you started analysing). I saw him at the Talk of the Town in about '62 and in Sydney, Australia twice (The second time with Frank and Lisa). The amazing thing about Sammy is he walks onto the stage and you see this short, skinny, one eyed, black entertainer. Within 30 seconds he is the tallest, most beautiful person you've ever watched. He was mesmerising on stage. There is nothing this man couldn't do. During the Talk of the Town gigs a friend went every night and sat in the front row (same seat every night). After a few nights Sammy realised what was going on and he started chatting to him. Brian said it was the greatest thing that had ever happened to him. Thanks Fil..

Oh, I love that song. The one where he sings it while dressed in a brown jumpsuit is excellent, too.
This performance reminds me of a wonderful experience I’ve shared with the rest of the audience very few times, at small venues. Every once in a long while, a song pulls everyone in so deeply that when it’s over, it takes a few seconds for the collective spell to break, so there is a delay until the clapping begins. When that happens, you afterwards marvel to think everybody there were all transported out of themselves, all at the same time. I don’t know if singers recognize what the audience is experiencing as one, but it’s a pretty special moment.😊

Fil, you analyze everything and that's great and thank you.. Sammy Davis Jr. is one of the most talented people who ever lived. The triple threat, singer, dancer, and actor. Amazing man, Amazing talent. Man, what a performance here, such meaning. I loved Sammy Davis Jr. ever since I first saw him as a kid. He reminds me of Bob Fosse a little with his stances. The only other person that I feel the same about, or maybe a little more, is Fred Astaire, but he's slightly earlier

Lockemeister Sammy was more than a ‘triple threat’, he was a ‘multiple threat’. He was also a comedian (especially as part of the Rat Pack), an impressionist, could play multiple instruments... He had been in the business since the age of three, at first performing with his Dad and his Uncle as part of the Will Mastin Trio until he graduated to becoming a genuine multi-talented all-rounder.

Sammy did not like that song at all. I think it's interesting to hear the radio version and think of him being sarcastically singing it. Don't get me wrong, he was a total professional, but his dislike--at least back when it came out in the early 70's--is legendary.

Sammy Davis Jr is another totally underrated entertainer. He could sing, dance, play the drums, do impressions, & act. My Mom saw him with his Dad & Uncle on Broadway. She said, "I don't know who 'this kid' is, but we have to keep an eye on him because HE IS GOING TO BE BIG!" Sammy Davis Jr & Judy Garland's renditions of songs were presented (as you said- vocal phrasing) in a way that no other singers/performers ever did. FYI- Davis sang with the Count Basie Band & Quincy Jones was the musical director & conductor.

Just an FYI to you Fil. "When I Look In Your Eyes" is my all-time favorite song done by Sammy Davis Jr. It's from Dr. Doolittle with Rex Harrison saying the words to a seal. Give it a listen when you have a chance. th-cam.com/video/qBwRZ6lpg94/w-d-xo.html.

Another amazing fact about Sammy's talent. He was a professional level musician who could play every instrument in that orchestra. I watched him go through every instrument one night on the Johnny Carson show's NBC ORCHESTRA, from Doc Steverinsen's trumpet to Ed Shaughnessy's drums and he was damned good.

Fil, In the early part of the 20th Century Al Jolson was considered by many to be the greatest entertainer in the world. Being the Headliner of his shows, and, a show bill having as many as ten acts, Jolson would wait in his dressing room for his time to perform. It is said that if an act before Jolson was doing well He (meaning Jolson) would turn on the water faucets in the bathroom of the dressing room in order to drown out the applause. If Sammy Davis Jr. was ever on a bill with Jolson I swear poor Al would have needed Niagara Falls to drown out the Applause!!!! Great video Fil. Always Love your work!!!!!!

An extraordinarily talented singer and performer. Had he been white, he'd probably have been bigger than Sinatra and deservedly so. Obviously, from this performance, an African American can bring to Bo Jangles something white folks just can't. His sensitivity in this performance is outstanding, obviously informed by his own experience of Jim Crow and black performance venues as a child. How somebody who smoked like a chimney could sing with the clarity of tone and pitch he could--practically miraculous. And his emotional colors as an artist are peerless.

It was written and is still performed by a white guy, Jerry Jeff Walker. No, Sammy was very short, scrawny with one eye, I doubt he'd been bigger than Sinatra if white. Sinatra was the biggest thing going in the 40's and had a army of fans till his death.

You are so right on about Sammy making this song tell the story with so much heart and soul. He is the total performer, whish was more common when he was coming up in show business. He is the full package and is really good at everything, singing, dancing, acting. He also has comedic talents.

Thank you for another great video Fil! I had the good fortune of meeting up with Sammy a number of times over the years at the MDA Telethon, and in addition to his incredible talents as an all-round performer, he was a very warm, friendly, funny and loving man. By the way, Mr. Bojangles was a real person, Mr. Bill “Bojangles” Robinson - also a hoofer and I believe Sammy knew him. (of course you knew that). Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge as always! 🤓👏
