For me, the second best folk song of this era was the Kingston Trio's "Where Have All The Flowers Gone!" Not just a major hit but a beautiful guitar and vocal arrangement!

My mother was good friends with Peter, Paul, and Mary when I was a young boy in the 60s and Seventys. These people would come two our home once in a while to attend private cookouts for them. I really didn't understand who they were untill my teenage years. They were nice to us childern, but then we were made to go play so that the adults could talk. Weird, but true.
Who would have ever thought that the questions in this song are far more relevant today than they were when they were written? Leave it to Bob Dylan to compose a song that people could enjoy and hopefully get an answer to some of the questions asked in it. Haven't gotten the answers yet, but the song is enjoyable.

I love your video,s .A 5 year old has no clue what contralto and tenor mean.The ability to interpret the meaning of the song is also still in its infancy.Yet somehow these 60,s songs carried so much weight ,so much beauty ,that for so many 60,s kids, it felt like it was a virtue to "want" to understand more about the songs that moved us.And we were seldom disappointed.The more we "knew" about a song,and its origins/meanings, the more special it became.54 years later Wings Of Pegasus comes along and adds his wonderful, professional perspective,along with some nice trivia to those songs .In a certain sense bringing these gems out of the closet ,down from the attic, for a new generation to enjoy..Thank you

Some of the most iconic folk music ever recorded. This is a special era in music and the talent level is off the chart. Many have already commented eloquently and I feel exactly the same way about it. Fil is bringing many of these classics out of the closet and bringing it for new generations to discover and appreciate. Yet another brilliant analysis teaching us how sometimes less is more, and why.
My sweet dad took my little brother and me to see PP&M for our first real concert experience. It was right about this time and we loved every minute! They were not just sublime musically, they were VERY funny between songs. Paul Stookey used his voice to simulate a Volkswagen race! We laughed til we cried. It was fun to learn more about what made them sound so wonderful, thank you!
Dick Kniss who played bass for the group for over four decades should also be acknowledged as a self-taught musician who was a key part of most of their successful recordings....amazing group in the tradition of Pete and Woody as politically progressive and having a social conscience 👏👏👏👍🏻🥂
It is a crime that this trio doesn’t get the props that they deserve. In their time there was probably some resentment by folk purists because they had commercial success. Entire shows of theirs are readily available on TH-cam and worthy of checking out for their incredible harmonies.
I grew up on Peter, Paul, and Mary. I remember them performing during the March on Washington where Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech. I still love to listen to them.
I am a big folk music fan and they are my favorite! No one harmonizes like them! Mary Travis's voice is amazing! She lived in the next town over from us and walked by our salon one day and I almost lost it! I fangirled so bad!! ❤️❤️❤️

Such beautiful harmonization and chemistry between the three of them. And yes, it must have been quite exciting to see Mary stroll by the salon! I loved singing with Peter, Paul and Mary as I am a contralto and honed my harmonizing skills singing along with them (and Karen Carpenter and any other singer in that range - including John Denver).
As a fellow alto, I also loved to sing along with Peter, Paul and Mary (on the radio or records etc). Singing Alto in school choir almost always meant singing the harmonies, singing with Mary allowed me to enjoy the melody. To be clear, I value having learned to sing harmony as harmony gives music more depth and body… but sometimes you just want to be the voice/section that shines.
Back in the 80's, I took my parents to see them in concert. I had never seen my father, a really manly kind of guy, show so much emotion as he did listening to them sing this song!
When popular folk music was at its pinnacle in my opinion. Before Bob Dylan went electric. Awesome vocal harmonization, which u hear also in country and doo opp music. Simple music that tells the truth.

For instance, that violinist in the song "Isis" made the song so good, but without that violin, the feel of the song is something else entirely. There are so many other examples of this.
Do-wop music was done by kids in school or on the corner. Country was born of the same DNA. Those and this genre came from social interaction. Humans are the only organisms that perceive music emotionally, in terms of cadence, harmony, rhythm, timbre, ambience, etc. We perceive the entirety of it. It lights our brains up like christmas trees . It plays us. We are blessed by it. You guys and gals are great.
Fil...your joy in watching these performances is contagious. I loved PPM, especially Mary. I got to know her a bit in the 70s, a smart intelligent and thoughtful singer. I miss her so much.
I saw them live in the mid 1980s. I wasn't particularly a fan, but a friend invited me to go because he had a spare ticket. It was an absolutley amazing show. Peter and Paul both did solo segments. Peter Yarrow's set was perhaps the best solo performance I've ever seen live.
Excellent analysis of this performance. I would only add that I really enjoy their double bass player, he always puts a few little bouncy runs in, making his lines more interesting than many of his contemporaries.
You know. Watching this, it just seems like the musicians then took their performance more seriously than today. Today is about showmanship. Like something that is mass produced rather than hand crafted. I'm sure there are serious musicians of a high caliber out there, but I'm betting they don't get a second thought by the industry unless they have some kind of showmanship (or beauty).
Today's female artists are vulgar talentless morons, always thrusting and caressing their semi-naked boobs into the camera as a distraction, whilst the boys keep tugging at their balls in their dance routine, I guess they're pulling their soprano vocal strings for sound effect. I heard them in concert in Atlanta when I was in high school, probably 1965. I remember their incredible voices and the blue, pink and purple lights bathing them that dazzled Mary's immaculate hair. They stayed on the stage after the concert and talked to anyone who came up (me!). It was a magical night!

Hi, Just read your post. I am a huge P, P & Mary fan for a very long time. Saw them in concert back in the late 1980's. You mentioned you are a singer/ songwriter. Do you have anything posted on TH-cam of your songs? What kind of folk do you play? Your own mostly or some covers too?
My father played guitar & accordion & I used to play his Peter,Paul & Mary records back in the early 1960s on a record player that gave me electric shocks……! i was in love with Mary & used to stare at those album covers when I was maybe 5 years old--that blonde hair, parted on the side with the bangs……

imagine a time when you had to have talent and ability to be played on the radio. and yes i know that there are many talented musicians out there playing every night but it seems more and more that the SHOW and the BUSINESS is more important than the music. As for Peter Paul and Mary, two things always come to mind. One is listening to Puff the Magic Dragon on the radio as a kid long before we owned a TV (and no its not a drug song, Paul can be found in enough interviews talking about the inspiration for the song) and the second is the story behind Paul writing the Wedding Song and to this day not taking a cent of royalties ... he believes that the song was given to him by divine inspiration and therefore not his and so has donated every cent to a public foundation to help those in need.
Such a great old classic, a beautiful melody and powerful lyrics. And the harmony is brilliant, Peter, Paul and Mary’s voices made magic together. It’s hard to avoid joining in and singing along. They are definitely iconic, both as folk singers and as activists....they used their music for both entertainment and for expressing their opinions on important issues. I would love to see folk music make a comeback. Thanks Fil for bringing back great memories.
Peter, Paul, and Mary was the first concert my parents ever took me to. I was able to meet all 3 of them and they were so happy my parents were passing the music to the next generation.
I like the way you analyze Mary singing the verse, Peter chimes in with harmonies, and Paul catches in with the chorus. I was always impressed with the three coming together at the end in this video.

I got to meet Peter Yarrow at a NAEYC conference where he was showcasing Don’t Laugh at Me, his (free) anti bullying curriculum. We all sang along with him on Puff the Magic Dragon. He hugged and gave a kiss on the cheek to everyone who wanted to meet him after. Absolutely engaging as a speaker too. One of my most tender memories.
We are so lucky to have grown up with the most inventive music ever made and Peter Paul and Mary were a prelude of what we were about to be bombarded with. These three were responsible for all of us to appreciate what talent was about to fill our entire lives. The journey is often more the adventure then the destination and that holds to for this wonderful trio we were so blessed to have in our lives.
My thoughts exactly. The amount of great music that evolved during the 60,s & 70,s was unbelievable .The whole era was exeptional for the sheer variety and innovation. No better time in music history and music has never been as great or fear ever will again.
Back when I was in the 8th grade in our music class we were given an assignment to create a slideshow from a song we picked from a list. I chose this one for my group and it was an excellent choice it turns out. The slides we had access to depicted everything they were singing about. The teacher wound up showing it to the whole school. I love the folk music of that era.
Heard Bob's version first, which was earth-shattering to my ears. Peter, Paul and Mary, however put their own spin to anything they sang, the harmonic blend of their voices perfect as you described Fil. The 60's exploded with so many genres of music. That some AM radio stations had room for all of it at the same time was astounding! I always loved them and finally got to meet them several times. Played my celtic harp for them at Mary's request at a rehearsal. The bassist Dick Kniss was a nice quiet man and a wonder on the bass.I met him also and told him about his wonderful playing..He is also dead now and missed sorely.

I saw them sing this in concert. They introduced it by saying, "The next song asks several questions," and the audience started cheering. In the studio they were perfectionists, which did not always sit well with some folk music fans who preferred a more spontaneous, casual sound. Yet Dylan liked them, as he should, since they popularized his music. I met Noel Paul Stookey in NH and he is a very friendly guy, no surprise. The unsung hero of the group was their bass player. You're absolutely right about the "tiny details", which are well-thought-out.

Used to irk me so much, cause I really wanted to see the artists do their songs in the style which made the song famous (not with Andy, even though he had a wonderful voice) since back then there was no MTV, and not as much popular music on television-- Lawrence Welk & Liberace were regulars, but not the same as hearing a favorite you listened to on the radio.

I had Mary in my taxi, I think in the late 70s. I was taking her home. This was in Manhattan, New York City. Another time I saw her while my lady and I were waiting to go in to see a movie , in the lobby. She was with a little girl, who I later found out was her granddaughter , having seen her in a TV special called Peter, Paul and Mommy. The audience were mostly kids and their moms. Mary's granddaughter came out and Mary sang her a song. It's a wonderful show . PP&M were great .
I was 6 yo and seen them live most of my life. They were very nice down to earth folks with real jobs. They jammed with everyone on all kinds of music styles
Peter,Paul and Mary, a national treasure. Pick 1965, people 50 years old and people 15 years old liked and enjoyed this trio. I would be very happy getting "stuck" listening/playing folk music for the rest of my days. I would in the future like(after much more practice) to be able to say "yes, my genre is folk music" I found this small quote pretty funny. “Folk” is a very loose term for a music genre. Guitar is an instrument (as I'm sure you know) which can be played in many styles. Flat-topped acoustic guitars (the ones with the round hole in the middle under the strings, are sometimes called a “folk” guitar. My favorite, probably "Leaving on a Jet Plane". Now you are going to have to do "The Seekers". Thanks very much for this one Fil.

In Nov. 1969, there was a huge Moratorium March in Washington DC, protesting the Viet Nam war. Peter, Paul and Mary performed for the 500,000 protestors and then flew up to Syracuse NY for an evening concert. I was at that concert and I have never seen such a dynamic, electric performance by any group. They were on fire and it was so inspiring to all the young people in the audience.
LoL everyone that has through these great ages of music. Such pure sounds from that age. I count myself lucky to have seen everyone from Sam Cook, Elvis, The Beatles, all of Motown, Sir Elton John, John Cougar, Queen, oh my god such music!!!! Feel for kids these days, maybe the best thing about lock down has been resurgence of some of this music. Thanks for this!!!
An incredible performance, made all the more incredible because it was done live. What two-guitars, three-voices group could match this? Peter, Paul, and Mary were a one-time-and-only-one-time phenomenon. A century from now that will still be true. They still get my eyes a little misty and they still make me think that there is hope. I always knew they were great. Thank you for this video, which proves their greatness.
I’m 67 and vividly remember just how popular this group was in Australia. Unlike now you could actually hear what they were singing and could join along. We all loved them.

Dick Kniss who played bass for the group for over four decades should also be acknowledged as a self-taught musician who was a key part of most of their successful recordings....amazing group in the tradition of Pete and Woody as politically progressive and having a social conscience 👏👏👏👍🏻🥂

He was a great guy. Family friend. Played golf with my mother every time he came into town.
It is a crime that this trio doesn’t get the props that they deserve. In their time there was probably some resentment by folk purists because they had commercial success. Entire shows of theirs are readily available on TH-cam and worthy of checking out for their incredible harmonies.

@keefie80 I only knew that song from Roberta Flack's version in "Play Misty for Me" with Clint Eastwood. This version is better I think.

Their recordings of "When the Ship Comes In" and "Too Much of Nothing," both songs written by Bob, are excellent, too.
Folk music was so much fun. You could actually hear the lyrics and sing along.
I grew up on Peter, Paul, and Mary. I remember them performing during the March on Washington where Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream" speech. I still love to listen to them.
I am a big folk music fan and they are my favorite! No one harmonizes like them! Mary Travis's voice is amazing! She lived in the next town over from us and walked by our salon one day and I almost lost it! I fangirled so bad!! ❤️❤️❤️

Such beautiful harmonization and chemistry between the three of them. And yes, it must have been quite exciting to see Mary stroll by the salon! Lastly, just thought I'd mention that Mary's last name was actually "Travers". Peace to you this Holiday Season!

I loved singing with Peter, Paul and Mary as I am a contralto and honed my harmonizing skills singing along with them (and Karen Carpenter and any other singer in that range - including John Denver).
Yes! It was so fun to sing along with a range that allowed me to figure out a descant on occasion. I hardly ever sing melody to their recordings.
As a fellow alto, I also loved to sing along with Peter, Paul and Mary (on the radio or records etc). Singing Alto in school choir almost always meant singing the harmonies, singing with Mary allowed me to enjoy the melody.
To be clear, I value having learned to sing harmony as harmony gives music more depth and body… but sometimes you just want to be the voice/section that shines.
Back in the 80's, I took my parents to see them in concert. I had never seen my father, a really manly kind of guy, show so much emotion as he did listening to them sing this song!
When popular folk music was at its pinnacle in my opinion. Before Bob Dylan went electric. Awesome vocal harmonization, which u hear also in country and doo opp music. Simple music that tells the truth.

@@KatieReadsKoziesAndMore Liked him both ways. He was able to partner up with some other good musicians after going electric, which was great. For instance, that violinist in the song "Isis" made the song so good, but without that violin, the feel of the song is something else entirely. There are so many other examples of this.
Do-wop music was done by kids in school or on the corner. Country was born of the same DNA. Those and this genre came from social interaction. Humans are the only organisms that perceive music emotionally, in terms of cadence, harmony, rhythm, timbre, ambience, etc. We perceive the entirety of it. It lights our brains up like christmas trees . It plays us. We are blessed by it. You guys and gals are great.
They were so great singing and playing together... like magic.
Fil...your joy in watching these performances is contagious. I loved PPM, especially Mary. I got to know her a bit in the 70s, a smart intelligent and thoughtful singer. I miss her so much.

I saw them live in the mid 1980s. I wasn't particularly a fan, but a friend invited me to go because he had a spare ticket. It was an absolutley amazing show. Peter and Paul both did solo segments. Peter Yarrow's set was perhaps the best solo performance I've ever seen live.
Excellent analysis of this performance. I would only add that I really enjoy their double bass player, he always puts a few little bouncy runs in, making his lines more interesting than many of his contemporaries.
You know. Watching this, it just seems like the musicians then took their performance more seriously than today. Today is about showmanship. Like something that is mass produced rather than hand crafted. I'm sure there are serious musicians of a high caliber out there, but I'm betting they don't get a second thought by the industry unless they have some kind of showmanship (or beauty).
They are out there but they are on social media so it's really hard to find that certain something.
Music was more relevant and shall I say naive. An industry grew in a very short period of time. I loved doing analog and miss it dearly.

Today's female artists are vulgar talentless morons, always thrusting and caressing their semi-naked boobs into the camera as a distraction, whilst the boys keep tugging at their balls in their dance routine, I guess they're pulling their soprano vocal strings for sound effect. Nice simple straight forward music, with nothing but talent and no electronics, they were so good.
I heard them in concert in Atlanta when I was in high school, probably 1965. I remember their incredible voices and the blue, pink and purple lights bathing them that dazzled Mary's immaculate hair. They stayed on the stage after the concert and talked to anyone who came up (me!). It was a magical night!
This is my favorite Folk Band of all time! I am a musician, singer songwriter and I really appreciate your technical input. I have produced at times and yes, this was so well arranged and produced also. Even little ol me wouldn't change a thing!

My father played guitar & accordion & I used to play his Peter,Paul & Mary records back in the early 1960s on a record player that gave me electric shocks……! i was in love with Mary & used to stare at those album covers when I was maybe 5 years old--that blonde hair, parted on the side with the bangs……

imagine a time when you had to have talent and ability to be played on the radio. and yes i know that there are many talented musicians out there playing every night but it seems more and more that the SHOW and the BUSINESS is more important than the music.
As for Peter Paul and Mary, two things always come to mind. One is listening to Puff the Magic Dragon on the radio as a kid long before we owned a TV (and no its not a drug song, Paul can be found in enough interviews talking about the inspiration for the song) and the second is the story behind Paul writing the Wedding Song and to this day not taking a cent of royalties ... he believes that the song was given to him by divine inspiration and therefore not his and so has donated every cent to a public foundation to help those in need.

Such a great old classic, a beautiful melody and powerful lyrics. And the harmony is brilliant, Peter, Paul and Mary’s voices made magic together. It’s hard to avoid joining in and singing along. They are definitely iconic, both as folk singers and as activists....they used their music for both entertainment and for expressing their opinions on important issues. I would love to see folk music make a comeback. Thanks Fil for bringing back great memories.
Peter, Paul, and Mary was the first concert my parents ever took me to. I was able to meet all 3 of them and they were so happy my parents were passing the music to the next generation.

I got to meet Peter Yarrow at a NAEYC conference where he was showcasing Don’t Laugh at Me, his (free) anti bullying curriculum. We all sang along with him on Puff the Magic Dragon. He hugged and gave a kiss on the cheek to everyone who wanted to meet him after. Absolutely engaging as a speaker too. One of my most tender memories.
We are so lucky to have grown up with the most inventive music ever made and Peter Paul and Mary were a prelude of what we were about to be bombarded with. These three were responsible for all of us to appreciate what talent was about to fill our entire lives. The journey is often more the adventure then the destination and that holds to for this wonderful trio we were so blessed to have in our lives.
My thoughts exactly. The amount of great music that evolved during the 60,s & 70,s was unbelievable .The whole era was exeptional for the sheer variety and innovation. No better time in music history and music has never been as great or fear ever will again.

Back when I was in the 8th grade in our music class we were given an assignment to create a slideshow from a song we picked from a list. I chose this one for my group and it was an excellent choice it turns out. The slides we had access to depicted everything they were singing about. The teacher wound up showing it to the whole school. I love the folk music of that era.
Heard Bob's version first, which was earth-shattering to my ears. Peter, Paul and Mary, however put their own spin to anything they sang, the harmonic blend of their voices perfect as you described Fil. The 60's exploded with so many genres of music. That some AM radio stations had room for all of it at the same time was astounding! I loved when you said "One had to be talented, be able to sing and sing harmonies and have real musical ability, not just an image." How far we have fallen! Another superb analysis

I always loved them and finally got to meet them several times. Played my celtic harp for them at Mary's request at a rehearsal. The bassist Dick Kniss was a nice quiet man and a wonder on the bass.I met him also and told him about his wonderful playing..He is also dead now and missed sorely.
Their album in 1962 was the first album I ever owned. Given to me for Christmas by a cousin. I still have it.
Peter, Paul and Mary, another great trio, out of the 60's , that Folk Lore from that Era, just can not be matched today... So sorry to hear of Mary's passing, she died a couple weeks b4 my mother, i never knew too much about they're back grounds,very nice story, Filip, very well done.. Thank You...

I saw them sing this in concert. They introduced it by saying, "The next song asks several questions," and the audience started cheering. In the studio they were perfectionists, which did not always sit well with some folk music fans who preferred a more spontaneous, casual sound. Yet Dylan liked them, as he should, since they popularized his music. I met Noel Paul Stookey in NH and he is a very friendly guy, no surprise. The unsung hero of the group was their bass player. You're absolutely right about the "tiny details", which are well-thought-out.

@@RoryVanucchi , oops, if its on Andy Williams, I'll bet he sang with them..I don't remember one show on which he ever let any musicians do their music without having to sing along. Used to irk me so much, cause I really wanted to see the artists do their songs in the style which made the song famous (not with Andy, even though he had a wonderful voice) since back then there was no MTV, and not as much popular music on television-- Lawrence Welk & Liberace were regulars, but not the same as hearing a favorite you listened to on the radio.
As much as I adore Cass Elliott (which is a lot), after your analysis of "Leaving On A Jet Plane" I had to immediately find a version of Mary Travers singing it. So glad you did this analysis. Shake that hair Mary! Much missed.

I had Mary in my taxi, I think in the late 70s. I was taking her home. This was in Manhattan, New York City. Another time I saw her while my lady and I were waiting to go in to see a movie , in the lobby. She was with a little girl, who I later found out was her granddaughter , having seen her in a TV special called Peter, Paul and Mommy. The audience were mostly kids and their moms. Mary's granddaughter came out and Mary sang her a song. It's a wonderful show . PP&M were great .

I enjoyed seeing Peter, Paul, and Mary in concert on their “10 Years Together” tour in 1970 at Blossom Music Center near Akron, Ohio, USA.
I was 6 yo and seen them live most of my life. They were very nice down to earth folks with real jobs. They jammed with everyone on all kinds of music styles
Peter,Paul and Mary, a national treasure. Pick 1965, people 50 years old and people 15 years old liked and enjoyed this trio. I would be very happy getting "stuck" listening/playing folk music for the rest of my days. I would in the future like(after much more practice) to be able to say "yes, my genre is folk music" I found this small quote pretty funny. “Folk” is a very loose term for a music genre. Guitar is an instrument (as I'm sure you know) which can be played in many styles. Flat-topped acoustic guitars (the ones with the round hole in the middle under the strings, are sometimes called a “folk” guitar. My favorite, probably "Leaving on a Jet Plane". Now you are going to have to do "The Seekers". Thanks very much for this one Fil.

In Nov. 1969, there was a huge Moratorium March in Washington DC, protesting the Viet Nam war. Peter, Paul and Mary performed for the 500,000 protestors and then flew up to Syracuse NY for an evening concert. I was at that concert and I have never seen such a dynamic, electric performance by any group. They were on fire and it was so inspiring to all the young people in the audience.

I’m 67 and vividly remember just how popular this group was in Australia. Unlike now you could actually hear what they were singing and could join along. We all loved them.
I heard them live at the end of their career (in Melbourne) and they were really beautiful singers. Lovely lovely tone. Quite a similar "vibe" to The Seekers with the gorgeous Judith Durham.
Only three voices and two guitars. Such a full sound. Had to be skilled musicians. A body of work decades long.
Mary Travers vocals on The Hammer Song (If I Had a Hammer) was my introduction to music as a love object. And Mary got my pulse racing (,at 9 or 10 years of age)
