  • Dr. Andrew Huberman describes the dangers of social media on your brain. As a neuroscientist, social media is a dangerous tool to give you dopamine hits. But at the same time, how you can train your brain and mind to be more flexible and avoid the dangers. If you find you are spending too much of your day on social media scrolling endlessly, think about possibly doing a small dopamine detox.

Especially youtube makes it really hard, by suggesting videos on topics that I do care about but are presented in an infuriating way by the people (which is also the reason they garner views though).

Yup... someone got murdered again or something, that's new in our world?, but then there's people who watch it every day who're SO reactive to it all like it doesn't happen and nagging about it like it's them being able to do something about it when they can't lol. It's all purposely meant to be so inflammatory getting your system to react in a hyper way constantly, it's just vile and pointless.

I went a whole year without a smart phone, not checking my email and social media every 5 min, and it gave that feeling of freedom of the days when our lives didn't depend much on know what others are doing. A great sense of relief.
Side note : you'll also find out the real people in your life, the ones who would care to call you and make sure you're alright. The one bad side effect of social media is people caring more about how you're doing on the outside rather knowing how you feel on the inside.

Social media has destroyed our minds the reason why our society has a bad mindset is because of social media we see people that are popular and strive to try and be like them instead of being who we really are and that’s what irritates me to no end about our society today is that everyone seems to have this idea that we should look like this perfect person to have this perfect body and I don’t get it I really don’t and those people who are doing all of this crap are all over social media that’s why I quit social media I couldn’t take the bs anymore.

It’s been 2 years since I left social media. I have no regrets at all.
I got sick of people gossiping, drama, negativity & people faking their lives & friendships and sharing everything that should be kept private or craving attention with provocative pictures & selfies.
A number of things I realised:
    1. People who added me as “Friends” didn’t really care about me. They were “So called Friends” it was just to increase their friends list.
    2. When people were going through their hardest times of anxiety, trauma and upset, I went out of my way & made an effort by helping & supporting them. But when I was going through my hardest times, including anxiety, trauma and stress. The people who I helped & supported never reached out to me to help or supported me even when I struggled. Everything has become one sided.
    3. Certain posts or videos get blown out of proportion or completely taken out of context even if it’s nothing negative.
    4. People lie about the amount of friends they REALLY have. Who in the REAL world has 100s or 1000s of friends WHO??
    5. Communication is very one sided. The same person had to make the first move to start a conversation as the other person doesn’t make an effort themselves or just can’t be bothered.
    6. People lie about their lives, they only show the positive side of theirs lives which doesn’t show the REAL truth about the person. You can’t tell and don’t see if someone is REALLY depressed, upset, isolated, lonely, feeling suicidal or what’s actually going on in their actual lives. Even if people post how they really feel, people don’t always care or not interested.
    7. It makes people fake and insecure. It’s not just school kids or teenagers in schools, colleges, universities or workplaces doing it, but grown adults as well are also being fake & insecure, especially managers.
    8. People compare themselves to others just to get loads of “Likes” & comments.
    9. Social media has increased loneliness, isolation, anxiety and depression which can be severe.
    10. Due to social media and the increase in technology, it’s causing destruction & destroying peoples lives in the sense of their is no sense of unity, community, love and nobody wants to help each other. If they see someone doing something constructive and productive and they’re doing well in a community or society, people will laugh at them in an act of ignorance, and cannot wait for them to fall down. Social media is dividing people, not bringing people together.
    11. Having a proper conversation or being real is considered not normal and people think it’s creepy. People don’t like having real conversations.
    12. It’s made people to be narcissists, entitlement, ignorant, prejudice and bullies.
    13. People can say things or make comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, ignorant, prejudice, misogynist, homophobia, xenophobia, discrimination openly online, rather than to your face.
    14. I have seen Boys & Girls take provocative, selfies / pictures just to get attention from so called friends / strangers, sometimes in a negative way, for example, woman having their boobs / chests hanging out, body image, men & women showing off muscles, six pack & more.
    15. With social media & the young generation with regards to friendships, people feel that if they add someone as friend request and they accept it, or meet someone & they click with them they automatically think that’s “friends for life” people need to realise that’s not how friendship REALLY works.
Friendships are & should always be a 2-way street. Real friendships would make the effort to support & be there for each other through the good times, fun times, hard times, sad times, upsetting times & more. Communication & making an effort should be equal on both sides. Not the same person who always makes first contact. The other person should also make an effort too.
We need to ALL learn the skill set of when we suffer from stress, anxiety, trauma, facing problems & more, that we should reach out to our friends, family or professionals for help & support, NOT turn to social media.
    16. Our young generation has grown up addicted. They have been addicted to mobile phones, alcohol, drugs, social media & more at a young age It’s very sad.
We are seeing the negative impact of what social media is doing, but we are not really reacting to it.
I never had TikTok, Twitter or Instagram. Glad I didn’t sign up to any of them. Facebook was the only social media platform I had and it was recommended to me back when I was in my teens.
I only use TH-cam as I can look at interesting things like cooking recipes and motivation videos and music videos of festivals & concerts and more fun stuff.
I enjoy going out in nature walks, bowling listening to music and learning new hobbies and watching movies.
Since leaving it’s been the best decision of my life. I enjoy life more, I can now enjoy doing the things I do or want to try without being judged or told what to do without being made to feel guilty.
I feel more happier and a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
I think if social media disappeared forever, I can guarantee people will spend REAL quality time with friends and family. People will know who their REAL friends are and that they will do things together and have a good time doing it. I also feel that people will have proper conversations and listen and engage.
I do feel sorry for our young generation. The young generation is lost. There is so much talent and ideas in young people and they need to show that in a positive & constructive way. We can make change for the future. The young generation needs real positive role models to look up to, for them to succeed in life & beyond.

Deleted my TikTok and Instagram today because I realized how I can easily spend 3 - 4 hours just mindlessly scrolling away chasing the high of entertainment. This habit started to mess with my critical thinking ability because I was just loading up tons of useless information into my brain. I replaced all that with reading books and the news - at least this form of media challenges me to think and apply my own judgment whereas the others don't. Yep very common for people. If it happens then there is a likelihood that the individual has aspects of their life that they are unhappy with or avoiding dealing with either because it requires a difficult and or unpleasant choice (ie leaving a relationship or job) or requires hard work and lots of effort and if that isn’t hard enough it may be that there are obstacles (people and circumstances like poor health) that sabotage or hinder the required effort in some way (like sand falling back into the hole you’re trying to dig) and if you are at the point of overwhelm you get addicted to distracting or numbing pastimes. Gotta’ chip away at the things that will help reduce the overwhelm (improve health and relationships and reduce waisted time on devices) so that each task you face is that little bit easier. Eventually avoidance may go away along with the “addiction” depending on the added complexities of people’s individual circumstances and personality.

Yes. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with being 'bored'. I am rarely bored, but if I am, I definitely don't pop out my cell phone and stare at it like so many others so. I might take out my grocery list (using paper and pen) and jot down what i need from the store. Or I will just lean back and relax. If I'm uncomfortable about something, same thing, I don't take out my phone. I just sit with the feeling of being uncomfortable and learn to manage it until I feel better. It's called being an adult and learning how to manage your feelings without your Smartphone to distract you.

I feel like I’ve been wasting my life away by watching others live theirs. This CD has three separate relaxation/meditation sessions on it th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq guided by a very pleasant and direct male voice. Unlike so many other products of its type, this CD does not have bad synthesizer music, does not feature a phony or affected style of narration, and does not make any bogus claims to be subliminal or to re-train the brain or any of that balderdash. What you get is 1. a guided meditation for getting into a pleasantly relaxed state of body awareness while taking a stroll (superb for those easing back into a fitness routine slowly after an illness or injury) 2. A nice long breath-awareness relaxation session that if followed diligently can put you into very deep states of full-body relaxation and mental calmness, and 3. a buddhist-inspired meditation session designed to help you develop and maintain feelings of loving kindness toward not just yourself and your friends, but toward people you don't even like. The CD makes no claims to be designed for advanced meditators or for buddhists or hindus/yoga practitioners looking for very deep and esoteric stuff. It is geared more toward the average person who just wants to develop the habit of relaxation and stress relief through natural, healthy means. him, if you happen to be reading this, keep up the good work fella, and I love your accent. I would also like to note that I have never fallen asleep while listening to this product. I would like to kindly suggest to the reviewer who said this CD makes him fall asleep, that he might want to get checked to see if he has a sleep disorder, or if he is simply not setting aside ample time for restful sleep at night. A healthy person getting adequate rest at night should be able to go into deep states of mental relaxation without dozing off, if not all the time, then most of the time.

We literally have everything...including and especially culture, music, books, knowledge, available to us all the time, anytime in our pockets. Yet many of us cant afford a house or medical care. I'm not sure I understand what you mean that your dopamine level baseline definitely decreased a lot. If I understood this video correctly (actually I have doubts that I did), your baseline level of dopamine when constantly engaging with your phone should actually drop, whereas when your phone broke and you had no access to it for one week, your dopamine baseline increased and normalized, therefore you felt more energetic to engage in other natural activities and your sleep quality improved.

Everything they talk about is just about trends, memes or an informal english language when english isn't even our native language. They are just trying to copy everything they see on social media and they have huge impact. For ex- asking randomly about nudes. Many guys in my school who I didn't even talk asked randomly about my nudes. Many 12 year olds are dating 20 year olds because they saw someone doing it on the internet and they think it is cool, they are having intercourse at 13 and I don't know what will happen with them if they don't change themselves. I realized how smart I was to never have social media in the first place.

Also Ive had to separate accounts for instance on Instagram I have two accounts one for family and fun, and the other for passions/learning ! Self-awareness is key also. When you find yourself staring at your screen too long, learn to look around in your present environment. For example if you are in your room look at the wall, the carpet, your clothes to bring you back to the present.

His most popular for a reason. We live in a binge culture these days in a lot of countries. Tons of sugar, tons of games, tons of alcohol, everything in excess whether it's a substance, a device, or a habit. He talks about how your dopamine levels reset below baseline amongst a whole other array of information that guides you on how your motivation and mood can be negatively impacted by engaging in constant pleasure. Hedonism is destructive.
      Building Good Habits
      th-cam.com/video/Wcs2PFz5q6g/w-d-xo.html
Once you stop destroying your motivation and feel more drive to get things done, you'll need things to do. This podcast discusses habits you can now engage in with a little discipline, thanks to your newfound motivation levels after managing your dopamine a little better.
      Diet Affecting Mental Health
      th-cam.com/video/xjEFo3a1AnI/w-d-xo.html
Together with forming good habits, your gut has a huge affect on your mental health. I'm not just talking about feeling depressed or anxious (which are also affected by a bad diet), but also things such as not being able to think clearly. Both divergent and convergent thinking are affected, creativity, discipline, perceived happiness, every minor aspect of your mental state is connected somewhat with your gut bacteria biome. My grandfather used to be a social worker and he studied this aspect of troubled individuals for a while. The difference a person shows when taken off a cheap fast food diet onto a more nutritionally complete solution is massive. My grandfather has seen people go from seriously troubled and aggressive, to managing companies and achieving personal success, simply by changing their diet. Changing your diet is a habit that you require motivation and discipline for I would argue, so the first video is still my biggest recommendation.
I hope you succeed with your goals, and I wish you the best!

Now, I'm more of a news junkie and it is a similar problem. Next up for me to tackle.

Deleted my socials yesterday. I defended someone on instagram, and immediately got pushback. Got called some really awful names, which I’m used to at this point. What got me was the person I was defending insulted me and said she didn’t need anyone to stand up for her and I was a misogynistic asshole. I’m a woman, thinking I was defending another woman. I cried for a little and realized that none of it was real. These people aren’t even really talking to me, just expressing anger at a stranger. I don’t want to feel that ever again.

NO: TH-cam is not social media. You don’t get to “socialize” with friends here. Just watch videos of things that only interest YOU. (Like this video)
I say this ahead of the smart a** people who will comment “you say this as you post this on TH-cam” blah blah blah

The ability to have a near real-time text chat, especially as a user via the phone app, blurs the line... somewhat. But I think I get the gist of what you're saying.
We log in, the algorithm feeds us a list of recommends based on previous engagements with the site, click a video... In the comments section, there may be familiar usernames, even ones that _are_ friends if those folks have exchanged their TH-cam handle with you on other sites. But you're not always connected with said friends on the level of knowing when they're online.
That's my understanding of the split between the 'Tube and social media. I hope to learn more.

Hahah, your dopamine levels will drop soon by how the way it rises man. Social media do not have any significant role with your mental health. Infact it'll affect your mental health like anything.
Social media, Smoking, Drugs are the bad ways to increase your dopamine levels because after the rise it'll drop real quick.
that you'll feel too low later. That isn't the case when you go for a walk or when you do exercises or when you read your favourite magazine.
Eitherway, apart from the neurotransmitters your brain will constantly compare yourself with random strangers on internet which will lead to an inferiority complex on the othergo.
Social media is a safe place for narcissists and self centred people.
And people do pretend like someone on social media who they're actually not.
People stopped focusing on themselves. People started dumping lotta unwanted informations in their brain . That's not good as well.
People started to ignore their beloved ones in real life and started spending hella time with strangers on internet. Sometimes that'll feel good that the person we met online is good and genuine rather than our irl people. But we've to understand that they're virtual mates and they've nothing to do with our lives that's why they'll seem to be genuine.
And also lemme state one thing atlast that, Doesn't mean that your life will be miserable enough if you start to use socials. It's upto you. If you have self control. If you know to variate pseudo ones and real ones. If you know your limits that's fine. But human minds are generally in this way. Most of the users will forget the world when they enter that virtual world. That's the major con imo.

Think of what benefit it really has for you, How does this benefit me? and look at the different elements and what the posts contain, even the ones that try to sound interesting and full of history facts, How does this still make a difference to my life?, they've just sucked you in more with those "interesting posts"but pay attention to how numb you really feel and lack of pleasure you really get from it, not much or not any anymore... cos you're not enjoying it anymore, and frankly you're just bored to death, you don't actually care what all these posts are about or are saying. Then celebrities? How often do they actually post something you're interested in? from experience most of the time they don't... it's ALL about them them them.
Does that really benefit you continuing this? and nobody will actually care or mind when you deactivate cos other people are just so trapped in their own minds trapped on social media when all you feel is that everybody really wants to be free from it and going through the same struggle, in fact we will not care if they were all shut down once and for all, What does that say?. You're always waiting for an excuse to make you leave too, What does that say?🤔

i have had a really low phase the last two months and i went crazy on scrolling through social media. I kept switching between apps and it was impulsively. I realised it reminded me like when i was still smoking. The urge is so real. I feel addicted! I am old enough to remember a childhood without the use of internet and my early teenage years i had no phone. Myspace became only a thing when i was 15. So i tried to remember. What did i do to relax or wind down or just for phone? I loved to read, craft and paint. I have not read a book in years that was not related to my field of work. I downloaded a fantasy novel the other day and started reading again, i also finally reworked my desk area which i have been putting off for a year now. I feel better today. But i am seriously considering to get rid of instagram all together. But i am not there yet.

Just think about the fact you're already always looking for excuses to leave social media, what does that tell you? you've already got one foot out lol, it clearly tells you that you don't enjoy being on there like you think. Social media is extremely manipulative and intentionally wants to keep grabbing your attention to keep you on it, that's not very nice at all and totally wrong... there's your excuse to get out.

I like that this clip enforces the importance of self-talk. People often think they need to boost their neurotransmitter function by use of medication. Although this can be helpful for some, I think the majority of people would benefit from changing the way they think. Your thinking predicates your neurological and physical output.

I recently heard a quote that said our most important asset in life is our mind!! And that actually blew my mind because it’s so true- I used to think it was time…
No matter how much time we have in the world, if our mind isn’t right we wouldn’t be able to accomplish much with that time.
Your comment make me think of that quote because mental health is soooo important!! What we prioritize, how we speak to ourselves & how we think/view ourselves! We can only go so far as our mind in life

Social media is a great tool! All young people are all over it, and it’s vital to them. This is a weakness you can use to destroy their lives if they mess with you. Simply post all their evil behavior with video evidence, and everyone will immediately know exactly what they are. It’s very gratifying to see their utter humiliation and desperation when they’re exposed. The revelations even made one evil teen who harassed me lose a scholarship and her chance to go to college. She now works in a convenience store. I’m surprised they hired someone fresh out of the loony bin after her failed attempt to end herself. She is no longer in any position to hurt anyone ever again.
