  • The Chevy Malibu was making clunking or popping noises coming from the rear suspension and after a bit of digging I found out the most likely culprit was the rear knuckles. I went ahead and changed them and it's been good ever since!
    Thank you so much for watching!

    Thank you for the advice. It was spot on. Just replaced both of my rear knuckles 2018 malibu and it runs smooth and silent now. Saved so much time for guessing the problem.

    I had the rear popping sounds on my 2016 Malibu Hybrid with 34K miles. I showed the dealer the 18-NA-136 service bulletin. The dealer correctly diagnosed the noise to the right side and only replaced the right side rear knuckle. I refused their recommended 4-wheel alignment. The cost was $755 for parts and labor plus $92 for the diagnosis. It worked. No more noise. If it happens on the left side, I’ll go to an independent shop and save some money. I watched this video beforehand and could not see anything adjustable justifying an alignment. It looks like everything just bolts into place. Correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks for the video.

      When I did it i didn't see the need for an alignment either, so I didn't do one, and it's been riding perfectly fine since!

      I would still do the alignment. It can drive fine and still be out of alignment.

    I own a 2016 Malibu LS. I just replaced the shocks and struts at 25,000 miles. I bought the car used with 15,000 miles at a dealer. Now I think that the digital odometer was turned back up to 20,000 miles before I purchased the car. Anyway, before I had the work done the car rode like an old truck. The bottom of the front end scraped the pavement at every small dip I drove through. I replaced the tires with a new set of Hankooks. Mechanics had looked at the car several times, but none of them ever mentioned anything wrong with the shocks. The shocks, struts, and alignment cost me $1,700 at another dealer, but the car rides much better now. Before anybody says it, even a $1,700 repair is a much better solution than buying a new car. Every car I've ever had has required a lot of repairs and/or maintenance annually, even a Honda Accord. I only do some of the routine maintenance myself. Otherwise my car goes to the shop. If you ask me, cars are still way too unreliable. One other thing about the Malibu: an error message telling me to put the gearshift in Park lights up on the dash about half the time even after I shift into Park. Cheap. Some mechanics think this is fine and I should ignore it. RB

    I was told the noise was from my trailing arms. So I went ahead and had both replaced 2 weeks ago. That didn't work. Then was told it was my struts. So went ahead and replaced them last week. Still hear the noise. At this point I'm like to hell with going to mechanics, I feel like ordering parts myself and doing what you just did. Going to have to try replacing both knuckles now. Thanks for the video.

    • @AnythinGoes

      I first want to say I'm not an expert by any means, make sure you do your own research to find the safest way to do it. This is how I did it and it worked for me. If I remember correctly, the only thing that's applying any pressure is the spring from the suspension, as long as you use the jack to properly lift the knuckle assembly to the correct height to where the shock isn't putting pressure on the knuckle bolts you should be ok, those bolts should slide in and out freely without any force. don't try to take the bolts out without jacking the spring up first, because it's a lot harder and you''ll get a sudden release of pressure and it could be dangerous. Hope this helps!

    I don't know much about cars so please bear with me... I have this issue but I'm planning on getting coilovers for my Malibu so does that mean I still have to do this or will the coilovers replace whatever this part is that's making the sound? Someone please answer. Thank you.

    • @Jonathan-nu8ov
      @Jonathan-nu8ov 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will still need to replace this part

  • @bradleycousineau6394
    @bradleycousineau6394 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am curious how difficult it is to separate the bearing from the housing. This may be the difference between me trying it myself or taking it to a mechanic since I don’t own a puller.

    • @WhistlePunk22
      @WhistlePunk22 ปีที่แล้ว

      He’s not separating the bearing, he’s putting on a whole new knuckle

    • @lornemullins8559
      @lornemullins8559 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You dont need a puller on the rear. After u take knuckle off the bearing is attached to the knuckle in center. Simply flip the entire knuckle over with the studs or tire bolts facing down. Take out the three bolts on the rear of the knuckle. The hub or bearing will come off. Its simple.

    • @AnythinGoes
      @AnythinGoes  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not entirely sure, from what I could tell it would be a pain to remove the bushing if it can be done at all, any research I did always had the entire knuckle getting replaced

  • @salykas
    @salykas ปีที่แล้ว

    We are having this issue on our 2019 Chevy Malibu. There was a service bulletin put out for this but it stopped at 2018 models and they aren't covering our vehicle. Price was quoted at $1700 for both knuckles! How long did it take roughly to replace both and was it pretty difficult?

    • @AnythinGoes
      @AnythinGoes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It took me a couple of days to do because I was filming it and sort of learning as I go, but if I were to be doing it without stoping to film I would say it would probably be a 2-4 hour job, taking into consideration I'm not an expert. As far as difficulty, the bolts you need to get to to remove the knuckles are in awkward places if you can't lift the car off the ground to get under it, also, most of the suspension bolts are on there pretty tight, so you need good leverage and/or power tools such as an impact wrench to really be able to get them of with relative ease, other than that it's pretty straight forward. I hope this helps!!

    Did others experience the noise immediately upon driving or did it start making that sound at least 30 to 40 minutes into the drive. Mine only makes the noise when the temperature outside is above a certain temperature or I’ve been driving around for a little while. I drive for Uber, so I don’t notice it until Either I’ve been driving around for a while or the temperatures above a certain temp. When I drive first thing in the morning. I don’t hear it right away. For me at least I think the rubber bushing gets worked and heated up and then starts acting up. Thanks in advance.

    • @AnythinGoes
      @AnythinGoes  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't recall drive time or temp being a factor, I noticed it the most at slow speeds or maneuvering, like backing into parking spaces or parking lot driving, I haven't heard the noise ever since I changed these parts out
