@@mitcht2599 Yeah even the show it got cancelled and turned into faded into irrelevance after a while. Kinda sad to grow and see this franchise slowly die or at even just end on a weird note and continuously refuse to admit that.
Navon Myhand I don’t think it’s fully dead. The company hired to produce the T.V. Show said they backed out of it and that it’ll be done in house by Sony
Xkill Dragon yeah I eventually want to do a video on that series similar to this. I played the first 2 and the vampire dlc already. I know nothing about Second Son but playing 2 for that little bit of footage made me really want to play the series again
Also, annoyingly a much better way they could have done Thieves in time, is if instead of time travel, the gang has to follow the trail of his ancestors biggest heists, where first you play the levels as the ancestors, and then you play the levels in their modern or ruined locations with sly or other members using the ancestors skill but tweaked/improved for the changes in the area.
I would have preferred a sequel which only references the established characters and has nothing plot-related to do with them. Their story had been told. Bringing them back invalidates the conclusion.
I've heard several people say Sly 4 feels like fanfiction And looking back I can definitely see why. There's the costumes for the returning female characters, Penelope's motivations, Le Paradox is an amalgamation of half the Sly OCs out there, the time travel plot... the list goes on. Not a bad game, but definitely not the best of the series.
@@TheJuicyJediJester In terms of what? Certainly not depth or development. As for worlds if you're referring to worldbuilding then I guess...? Since it's admittedly the least interesting in that regard but I don't really consider that much of a problem with how the stories are told. Also if you haven't you should watch b-masks sly trilogy retrospective as I think that'll make you understand how cohesive the trilogy really is when it comes to story and themes.
The demo version of sly 2 was the intro level in the museum. I must’ve played that level hundreds of times before my brother finally got a hold of the game and we could play through the entirety of it. And it was a fantastic game.
JamPack volume 13 or 14 had Sly 3 demos in it ... I played Shaman Escapes so many times before my grandad recognized a Sly game in gamestop and we eventually got the collection
My defence for Murray's acting in 3 is this, and B-Mask does a better job of explaining this than I: "The murray" from Sly 2 was a persona he concocted to be more "useful" to the team after his blunders in 1. After the shattering events of 2, he lost himself. The guy in 3 is not the same hippo we saw in 2. He lost himself and that's shown through the sort of manic tone he has in the game. Hes no longer trying to act like a tough guy, hes just murray. Now was this written the best it could have been? nah. But I really like the idea and direction it took him. Hes still just a goofy dude trying to be the best person he can be, not the macho man he was pretending to be in 2. But yeah, I wish he wouldn't yell so much. (I love the van mission though, it shows how he wont give up on something he loves ever again, and the moment where the panda king connects with his passion is fuckin MAGICAL) Amazing video though, all criticisms are fair and valid, even if they might not bother me as much. This series definitely deserves more recognition.
He yelled too in Sly 1 before he found confidence in himself, but he yells way too much in Sly 3. To the point of it being unbearable. I hate Murray in Sly 3 because I can’t stand his yelling. Murray in Sly 4 also talks loudly but as with Sly 1, it’s actualy bearable and actually sounds like Murray.
Ratchet & Clank: Look guys I can explain! Sly Cooper: Why do you deserve another game? All I’m getting is a rumored animated series! Jack & Daxter: Wait, you guys are getting recognition?
Jak & Daxter, the first game, was my childhood. Sly came after that and dominated my teenage years along with Metroid Prime. But all three of those series of games look nigh impossible to get continuations/remakes of :(
The new Ratchet, Rift Apart, is an amazing game and have good references to Sly and Jak & Daxter ❤ I hope Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog see the success of Insomniac Games and can returns to these classic IPs
@@TheHalloweenSpirit There was someone who works with Naughty Dog that mentioned that people there wish they were working on a new Jak and Daxter but the company just wants to do serious games for mature audiences (which is kind of dumb)
@@elharvey5032 Sly Cooper can be pretty dark when you think about it, I mean the *FIRST* game shows you Sly watching his parents get killed in front of him!
@@jrt2792 I feel like if they can, for example one route they can go if they do a reboot they can create a new set of villains that are Similar to the Court of Owls, which obviously would be a Cultist of owls that manipulates and controls the criminal underworld and who also worships Clockwerk
They did a great job at creating interesting and entertaining villains. Especially in Sly 2. The first villain Dimitri, the red bison and and the spider lady are highly memorable
Oren Albert Meisel Don’t forget about Rajan. I loved how he went from a relaxed crime lord to an insane lunatic after the cooper gang stole the wings and left the cops for him. I think he had the best story arc of all the sly cooper villains.
I’m so happy you did a video of one my favorite PS games. People would love to have a remake because Sly was in Sony’s version of Smash as character. The chemistry of Sly and Carmella in 2 was so good to including the mini game when you have to dance with her.
Dude, LeFwee gets EATEN alive by sharks, Sly's father gets murdered in front of him and in the Penelope map, they joke about murder attempts by the rival teams.
I always felt like the plot of 3 was more “show, don’t tell.” Dr. M says the Coopers don’t care about their partners, but when you look over the game and everything you know about Sly, you see a million instances where he proves he’s not like that. The main plot, while not involving M directly, is really about Sly’s bond with his friends strengthening - through absence or trial or romantic entanglement 😆 - so when we reach the ending, he doesn’t hesitate to have their symbols on the new vault or even sacrifice his legacy to save them. The real treasure is the friends he’s made along the way, you could say 😉😉
It's more like sly Appreciated his friends even more due to the fact that his father treated his partners just as Business, and he realized that what he had with murry & bentley is unique, and also realized a Life as master thief isn't Everything, espeicllay after he succesful finished the cooper trial. He accomplished Everything.
As an absolute diehard Sly fangirl I do appreciate your review being both really fair but very firm too. The second definitely is the best but my one complaint always was that no missions were repayable outside of a few odd cheat commands. While I loved the fourth it DEFINITELY was more like fanfiction than anything else. While it did have a lot of good it absolutely had bad as well. It was so satisfying playing as the ancestors but time travel has never been something I've enjoyed in any media. Coulda been metaphorical time travel like visiting where his ancestors had once lived but that's just me Your review was really great and because you dont have the nostalgia factor, made it a lot easier to see its flaws. Thank you
I've cracked the code. The reason they never show the face of Sly's father, is because of what happened at the end of Sly 4. The time Space continuum broke so bad, that sly ended up becoming his own father. Now there's just an eternal loop of time with Sly giving birth to himself, and repeating the events of Sly 1-4 for eternity.
I think you have to view Dr. M differently. Yes he's a possibility of Bentley. But less what Bentley COULD become, and more what Bentley HASN'T become. Dr. M and the Cooper vault in general make sly do some inner contemplation about his legacy and team. He realizes that his family isn't perfect. Yes they were master thieves, but not always the best people. He cements how he's different in their fight, and even at the end of the game finally releases them from all the help he's gotten to go pursue the lives they want.
Dude I love how many people are talking about these games. They were my favorite games on the ps2, and seeing so many people get to experience them is so nice(minus the 4th game)
When Sly was telling Bentley that he wanted him and Murray to enter the vault with him, Bentley’s responses made it pretty clear that Sly’s conversation with Dr. M had struck a chord with him. His responses to Sly were very restrained, almost passive-aggressive. Sly is fundamentally somewhat arrogant. In the first game it was something of an act since he was still a rookier, but in Sly 2 he’s very self-assured and the game makes a point of exploiting that. He’s more mature in Sly 3, but it is still called the Cooper Gang, and the whole point of the job is to get Sly to a treasure that the others aren’t even allowed to see. Dr. M’s conversation with Sly shows a perspective that Bentley hasn’t ever really considered before, and that makes sense considering that they grew up together as the best of friends- a friendship which is ultimately reaffirmed. But without that friendship, Bentley may not have been swayed- showing firsthand how people like Dr. M and Clockwerk come to be in the first place.
Thank you for addressing the animated cutscenes and design change in Sly 4. I preferred the designs and comics cutscenes in the previous games so much more. Sly 2 is also my favorite despite not experiencing the issues you get in the collection.
that got a laugh out of me lmao. in hindsight that aspect of the game's lore is a big weakness for me. like why have this one family that's just straight up better than anybody else
@@melrakan I agree to a point, though I believe that was a theme of Sly 3. One reason his family was wiped out was because they flew too close to the sun; they had great hubris. Isn't it odd that there aren't any side coopers? It seems that the family was too concerned with tradition to grow a larger family tree, rather than a mostly straight line. Their own pride was their downfall in the end.
This was really good. Thanks for giving my favorite franchise of all time it's due, I'm really glad you liked it. Not to be that guy but if anyone was interested by this video and wants more Sly related content B-Mask did an absolutely incredible retrospective of the original trilogy and I would be remiss not to plug it here. Seriously, check it out, it's fuckin awesome.
Sly was such a special part of my childhood. I always thought he was so cool and I wanted to be a renegade like him. Looking back now his character was so well made and there was/is so much potential for this world. Maybe as a show
Honestly, I miss it. When going into the three mascots that carried the platformers into the 2000's *_(Ratchet, Jak & Sly)_* he was my favourite of the three. Me and most of the fandom can all agree that 3's ending would've been the best. But with how things are now, the fate of our phantom thief is all but a mystery.
The second game has my favorite story, but the third game has my favorite gameplay. I consider those two games a tie for my favorite game of all time. I liked the forth game (not as much as 2 and 3), but I think a lot of it was from nostalgia from playing the originals my whole life. I own sly 4, but I don’t own a PS3, so I’m hoping that I can play it on the PS5 so I can play it with more of a critical point of view. #FreeSlyFromEgypt
Sly Cooper was my favorite game for the PS2 and I'm glad to see it again Sly 4 is one of those games that I'll always love no matter it's reputation, maybe it because I'm no game genius but that's just me
I don't "love" Sly 4, but I REALLY like it. It's my second favorite Sly game (behind Sly 2 obviously). It's gameplay is good, and that's what I strive for most in a game; that it's fun to play. All these "game geniuses" who crap on Sly 4 do it ONLY for its story (which sucks I know) and its character design (which is also mediocre), but they never take a second to appreciate how good the gameplay actually is.
It's for me the same. I see why people dislike it so much but I can't bring myself over to hate the 4th game as hard as I try. I love it because it's the game that brought me into the series so it might be because of the nostalgia in a way (and the fact that I love time travel stuff). Another point tho as I know that people shit on it....... Alot....... I feel like it's getting old to shit on it.
After letting Sly 4 sink in for a bit, it really doesn't make me want a Sly 5 from Sanzaru. They horribly misconstrued what make the characters so memorable and ultimately bastardized all of them...and the lame time travel narrative was horrendously contrived and boring. While their weakness is in the narrative, their strengths lie in the gameplay (Minus the use of QTEs in boss fights), though I can't say the level designs were all that great and I find it hard to navigate when everything blends in. Sly 2 had some great landmarks for you to know where you are. Even with a mini-map, I still ended up lost in Sly 4. Sly 4 in a nutshell is basically a fanfiction...and a terrible one at that.
Cool you did this, these were my favorite games growing up. I can say that glitch in 3 where Sly disappears in that panda king scene was in the original as well, seems it's something the new team did not fix. I've always felt the writing goofs in 3 and 4 come from the team not knowing if they want to play towards the aging audience from the first titles, or keep it to the age group they started with.
In defence for Sly 3 here. While we can agree that Carmelita's voice was weird, I actually found her character still pretty accurate with the series. I mean, Sly did disrupt a meeting with her officers regarding Octavio whom was polluting Venice after all. As for her dialogue, I'm sure we can chalk that all-up to the fact that we can all lash-out and say things we don't mean when we're ticked off. Whereas for the final chapter, the circumstances that were present made her actions all the more justified. Sly was literally about to be killed. As for Murray, I don't have much of a problem with him. In Sly 2, his voice always weirded me out because it sounded like he had a sore throat and he was trying to fake a "tough-guy" voice at the same time. Which made all of his lines, while not bad, weird for my taste. As for Sly 3 onward, I always enjoyed Murray's enthusiastic tone because it works for the point the series takes place in imo. During the Venice sequence he's still very calm, but after he returns to his original rousts he seems so joyful and pumped to enter these situations. Which makes it pretty nice for me, sorta like Po from Kung Fu Panda. Murray usually speaks at appropriate tones throughout the game from what I can remember, and a number of his lines still hit hard for me (not including the final chapter with some extremely emotional lines), like his determination to retrieve the team van, or the way he yells in shock when the beast takes away the Guru, etc. So I'd honestly say he's a leg-up from Sly 2's Murray. Especially when you realise that after the first chapter in Sly 3 Murray discovered he meant way more to the team than the muscle. As for Bentley's character "change", it actually works for me. Dr. M didn't suffer any real betrayal from Sly's father, but he always felt like he was being taken for grant-age by Sly's father despite the fact he really wasn't. He was just delusional given his intelligence. Bentley suffers the same thing, but his influence with Murray and the stronger connection that they've grown throughout the games in oppose to the classic Cooper gang is way stronger. Bentley proved to be smarter overall. While there's no exact build-up, I'm actually kinda glad that it was solved early and quickly. Dr. M's whole past is about being bent by his old colleagues, which happened at the last second and ended up sparking the third game. If Murray wasn't there, heck if Bentley didn't grow a strong bond with him and Sly, than we can only imagine what he would've done afterwards. So, fortunately, his suspicion was turned down immediately. It's hard to explain, but think of it like you're in a car ride with your parents and you question your capabilities and question if you're an overall good person. But its turned-down immediately by facts and the innocence/influence you and your parents play to each other's lives. That's how I think of it at least. As for Dr. M, he was give enough screen-time. It wouldn't make sense for him to appear anywhere else than the prologue and final chapter.
When I played Sly 3, I got the impression that Sly's dad treated his gang more like employees than friends. And that he may have very well been a big enough jerk to justify Doctor M's massive vendetta against him. And that the reason Bentley didn't end up like Doctor M was because Sly didn't repeat his father's mistake of taking his team mates for granted (plus, it helped that Bentley didn't lose his love interest to Sly LOL).
@@MsBrendalina That could be the reason. It makes more narrative sense than one might think, especially since this isn't the first or second game in the series, it's the third and final game. So yeah, that could be the reason. Good job.
Sly 3 was the game I was always looking forward to play after school. It was my first game to play ever and up to this day, I still love it. It makes me really sad seeing a game series that I love so much, being completely ignored. I really hope we get a Sly 5 and the TV series get picked up because it'd be dope.
I find it really weird that your ran into so many port issues. I've played the HD collection through on my ps3 multiple times, probably over a dozen on all games, but I've only ever in those 100 hours or more ran into one port issue which is sometimes pressing circle button, when I'm doing some speed running level obstacle jumping, doesn't register and i fall to my death. But that's really it, never ran into any of the issues you mentioned, and i truly think it hindered your experience of the games.
Let's be honest, if the DLC came out it would have been that he got sent to the future and so they would've gone through a shitty terminator plot line. If there was ever a continuation I'd want to see sucker punch take the helm again, and if they can't then perhaps another company who's record would be good for Sly. Also, just make 4 non canon, trying to continue that would just gimp the game from the start.
Yeah, it was gonna be an Egypt level that was originally planned to be in the game, then later DLC when they realized they did not have time to make it for release, and then never when the game sold poorly when Sony basically just released it to no fanfare.
4 was lackluster but I didn't see any problems big enough to strike it from the canon. Honestly if they stopped with two the story would be perfect, all the loose ends were tied. I love 3 but it had some story issues too. Also the story still be saved while keeping 4 Canon, it could center around Clockwerk's backstory, no one develops that much hate from just jealousy, Slytankhamun probably did something to him, they may have even been friends. If Bentley has the Theivious Raccoonus Sly can write something in it for them to find him, the story's not in any worse position than it was at the end of 3.
good vulcan3000 ref, you ever read tge canon ending of the zatch bell manga? the art aesthetic in sly is: no right angles; leading to designs using circular curves. 1 is my favorite, less is best. 4 continued the time travel epilogue line, showing off historical figures mentioned in 1, but faltered by having friend become a villian again. also, kudos to director saying the closest degree to get for VG design for non-IT apt students being theatre: writing, performance, world design, music, and audience interaction.
It made me beyond happy to see this video pop up! These games were a massive part of my childhood and to see someone jumping into them blind this late and still enjoying them is so cool. God looks like I've gotta go start replaying!
same never had a problem or also back then when I played it on ps2 my eyes weren't aware of +60fps like today so that could possibly be it. I also didn't experience that horrible noise in Contessa castel it was fine for me when I played it, it could be something on his side tbh.
I’ve played it on the PSNow Stream, the only issues I had was Input delay, which was a pain in the ass to do the Rythm boss fight in Sly 1, but overall it was fine for me.
The only part in any game where the framerates drop are the foggy parts of the miner-caves in Sly 3 in Rumble Down Under. Drops to about 10fps there but other than that, nothing.
I love this game series, very much. (Not including Sly 4 Thieves in Time.) But the main 3 games are so close to my heart. These games are my childhood and they have helped me out of serious bouts of depression more than once. Sony do right by this game series. A new game or show I will take anything. Just keep their voices the same. Is all I ask.
@@halleyangel1706 Definitely, I'm pretty sure most of the issues were due to incompetence or laziness. I mean they were forced to make the HD collection if they wanted to develop that piece of shit fan fiction game which is barely passable at best.
My entire childhood I only played/owned one ps2 game and that was sly cooper. I got to play it once more two years ago as an adult and it still kicks ass.
With Murray, I think it was stated that his deeper voiced self from 2 was just an act to like make him sound stronger to be able to help the gang and try to build up false confidence, and its stated that after Bentley got crippled, he tried to keep it up but eventually ended up leaving the gang cause the guilt was too much for him to take since he believed himself was the one to blame, and he mentored under the Guru in hopes that there could be a peaceful solution to problems. Don Octavio kicking Bentley out of his wheelchair and threatening to outright kill him ended up teaching that not everything in life, unfortunately, can be solved peacefully, and with the first and second episodes of the game (not counting the prologue) he gains confidence, this time not being false confidence like in 2, but genuine confidence in himself, and no longer feeling he was the one responsible for Bentley being crippled in 3. Thus, his voice stays the same way like it was in 1, but its because he doesn't need to put on a facade anymore like he did with his deeper voice in 2. I feel this doesn't negate how he is in 2 though since it shows he really does want to help his friends, but was just unable to get the courage to do so until he sort of "forced" it. The ending of Sly 2 really was just the breaking point for the poor guy where he couldn't keep it up any longer. In my opinion, Sly 3 enhanced Murray's character, not regressed it.
This. A lot of Murray's lines in Sly 2 come off as pretending to be a hero. Even against villians like Rajan and Jean Bison, he tried to act heroic and calls himself "the Murray" in third person like he's on a superhero tv show. Its a bravado to make himself seem more than just the "big dumb muscle" of the team. Murray just really wanted to prove he was useful in the field to his friends instead of just being the no-brain driver. But bravado and acting can't cover up genuine grief/sadness, such as the moment Bentley was injured and Murray blamed himself for not living up to his big bold persona he built up. What good was all that heroic speech if it couldn't make him the hero his friend needed when he needed it the most? That's why Sly 3 feels more like a return to Sly 1's Murray. He was always the same strong loyal loveable oaf deep down, but his confidence comes from a more genuine place rather than feeling he has to prove himself or put on an act. So he sounds like his old goofy self but with the boldness and experience he gained from Sly 2.
Sly 2, the first game I legitimately beat without cheats on my first console. Very nostalgic game, I replay it and the Rachet & Clank series all the time.
Am I the only one that really enjoyed Sly 4? I'm honestly surprised at all the hate it's getting now, because when it first came it out it got great reviews. Sure it had it's loading times and frame rate issues, but it was fun and a beautiful looking game.
Yea i enjoyed it as well, never got to finish it but if they fixed the load times, framerate, and fix the story a bit i think i would've loved it alot more.
I'm pretty sure i enjoyed this game as a kid as much as i did is because that's the only Sly Cooper game i actually played, so i didn't know anything about the characters
man I love this damn game... I've played when I was little a young kid and in my teens sly four I'm almost twenty a full adult and I would love nothing but a sly 5 in my lifetime. so many great memories with these games regardless if four was not the best. I just want a damn good ending.....
37:25 You could make the argument that due to the tech being left in each era, Clockwerk would use that same tech to make himself into a machine. From a different perspective, Clockwerk making himself into a machine would've been impossible without some kind of modern tech, so a time travel plot is kinda necessary? I mean, how could something like the Hate Chip exist in a medieval setting anyway, unless the components for it were left behind through time . . .
I acually assumed that Le Paradox would at the end become Clockwerk and then gets troughn by the Time Machine into the Cavman Era. That that was all part of his Plan with Penelope building him a new, Stronger Bodey.
As many people i've seen in the comment section, i'm really happy that after all these years these games are still relevant. They may not be the best game ever but i remember having so much fun playing them when i was younger. I think i've played them all twice at least and i'm thinking on replaying them once more. I'd truly recommend Sly Cooper to someone who hasn't played it yet. (P.S.: i think Sly 2 and 3 are the best out of the 4 games, but it's best if you play through them all in chronicle order)
I love sly Cooper. It's my favorite platforming game of all time. 3 had the best story though. In Europe I'm assuming they found Cooper to be offensive so they changed it to sly raccoon.
I just started getting into your videos and I absolutely adore the way you break mechanics down and the way you format your videos to where I can put you on in the background while I’m working or doing other things. You’re also very fair with your critiques and I love that. I’m definitely planning on watching more of your content! Keep up the awesome work :)
I always found the discussion around Sly 4 strange. Like, I enjoyed the trilogy a good deal and I played them as an adult not that long ago so it's not like I had any nostalgia holding me back, but I actually somewhat liked Sly 4. It's not without it's problems of course, not like the trilogy was perfect either, but I do agree that it had more than those did. The gameplay itself was pretty fun, in some ways I thought it was better than 2 or 3 even if by a little. Only really hindered by the loading times and poor framerate which granted are pretty big problems. I have pretty much the same issues with the story as this guy did. I didn't hate the story, I just thought that it was ok with Sly's forced relapse into thievery very out of character, among other problems. Overall it's not a perfect game by a long shot, but I can still call it "good" if you can handle the technically side of things. I prefer the trilogy for the most part, but I never did care for the story too much in any game, just the characters which they really hurt in Sly 3. I saw potential with the story in these games, but it always fell a bit short for me. That said, I really liked the Crash and Spyro remakes a lot, especially CTR Nitro Fueled which was fantastic. So I'd be perfectly fine with good quality remakes of the Sly games by people who know what they're doing. It's unlikely that the best case scenario would occur, but I hope it happens. And I also do like seeing games as they were originally released, but remakes don't hurt that. The originals always exist and there's nothing saying that you can't go back or even like both for different experiences. That's what I did with Spyro. I played the originals for the first time months before the remake and loved them and all their jank, but still greatly loved the remake itself. To put it simply; I like all 4 Sly games, with 4 being confusing for me because as many problems as it has, it's not a bad game. So it's hard to know where to rank it. I do love remakes, because it's just another experience to the same game that I love. I'd prefer a sequel, but sometimes you need to drum up interest like what happened with Crash 4 which is probably the best Crash game to date. That and I like to have my cake and eat it too; give me a remake and a sequel someday pretty please. Very good video as well, I can't get enough of this type of thing.
I always love the original Sly Cooper trilogy on the PlayStation 3. Maybe in the near future, I can create my own Sly Cooper fan club. The comic book-esque cutscenes, the dialogues, and the wonderful episodes.
Very good critique on my favourite series ever! I agree with almost everything you said. I absolutely loved the og trilogy. But the fourth game? For me, there is no fourth game. Story ends at 3. Edit: Hmm, is that Hollow Knight music I am hearing in the background...
I like your review of one of my favorite childhood games! I agree with a lot of the points you made in the series. Your comment with Carmelita in Sly 3; I understood it as she came to realize that Sly was always going to take advantage of her and maybe she finally got yelled/in trouble at by her Commanding Officer that Sly stole something that she was assigned to protect? Such as that bonus train movie in Sly 3.
WAIT... they were going to release a dlc expansion for the real ending to 4!? I'm glad Sony pulled the plug. Whatever value Thieves in Time has, leaving it unfinished with a plan to sell us the ending is just bad buisness. People still rag on Asura's Wrath for that to the point where it's now part of its identity and Sly deserves better than that.
It was unfinished BECAUSE of Sony, though. Egypt was originally going to be another level in the game before Sony slashed their budget and told them to just make it DLC.
Can't say that I' am a fan of Penelope going from Ally to Enemy between 3 and 4. Personally, I'm of the idea that she had an identical twin sister that got jealous of her, had her abducted pretended to be her, frame her, and she's trapped in the Medieval Era, and is trying to find a way back home. I happen to add to a fanfic interactive where that is the story in some branches. As for the Ancestors meeting each other, that too could lead to a plot twist, where they learn about Clockwerk, and thus, to try to preserve their lines, and perhaps help Sly out, have secret families, which I've done in a few branches.
What a great trilogy. 3 of the best 3D platformers ever made. Good thing no one ever came along and tarnished its legacy with a crappy sequel. Nope, that never happened. Honor Among Thieves was the perfect conclusion to it all.
It absolutely was. The Penelope thing came out of nowhere. There was no motivation for her to do what she did. Le Paradox is the lamest villain in the series, the final boss fight was a series of quick time events and it ended on a cliffhanger. I enjoyed playing as Riochi and Tennessee Kid but it all fell apart shortly after that. The game made absolutely no positive impact on the series. Honor Among Thieves is a perfect conclusion and it would make no difference to the series if Thieves in Time never happened.
Exactly! Penelope being the Black Knight didn't make any sense. I honestly somewhat enjoyed the game up until that reveal. I also agree with you on Le Paradox. I found fighting El Jefe to be way more thrilling than fighting Le Paradox. El Jefe was also way more threatening than Le Paradox as he has taken over entire countries with few resources.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is the best in my opinion,I know a lot of people hate that you don't have a health bar but that is one of the reasons that its the best for me. It's the most challenging game in the series and has the best bosses in my opinion
Sly cooper is my favorite game. It makes me so sad to see kids today that just play fort nite, they will never experience playing sly cooper or ratchet and clank. So sad
@@isharpedge8469 I'm talking about how there's a possibility that Clockwork is actually from the present and since there's time travel somehow Clockwork goes back in time and gets stuck there (possibly by a Cooper therefore his hatred towards the Cooper Family is explained)
I miss the Sly series. Even though Sanzuru didn't do the best job with the 4th installment, I'm still grateful they cared enough to try. Hopefully, if there is ever a 5th game, Sucker Punch will take back over and restore it more to the Sly 2 / Sly 3 comic book style.
After seeing this video and sgb's let's plays of the series I wonder if I just had a version of the HD collection that was more polished because I never had these issues when playing or maybe I just never noticed them.
I fking remember sly 2. The first place that u encounteer the spider , OMG when u have to stay behind and stole the keys , SEERIUSLY , that was so fking scary when she found u . Literally that place was the most scary ever , and that spider too. Seriuosly , i cry so hard with that queest .
Very well paced video! As someone who grew up on the Sly series and has played the trilogy dozens of times over, I think this perspective is interesting. Also, as someone who despises Sly 4, I think it might be for the best that Sly 4's story is just left where it is. I think the series' future is in remakes of the trilogy, I mean...these games are turning 20 years old in the coming years just as Crash and Spyro did when they were remade. Sly 4's story is such a mess when you really think about it, to the point where I don't think a follow up is even worth doing. Especially if they plan on cashing in on Sly nostalgia, it wouldn't make sense to make a sequel to the failed revival. Again, great video.
J's Reviews I am sorry but I just don't share your hatred for Sly 4. Sure its the weakest story wise but I believe from a gameplay standpoint its really fun. I also personally think Le Paradox is over hated seeing how unlike Arpeggio he fits in better from a thematically point of view. I also think that his ego not only does a good job paralleling with Sly's empathy but it makes him stand out from the other big bad's in the series.
The camera snag in the Bentley mission in episode 5 killed me so many times the last time I replayed the game! Despite that I love sly it was my favorite game growing up, great video!
21:42 XD i played sly 2 and 3 on my ps2 and Murray does not sound the same in youre sly 2 version its similar but worse and like slowed down which is probadly why you has that issue in sly 3
Personally, I'd prefer if Sly four was retconned out of existence and just redid entirely by Sucker Punch. At least the character designs would be mostly consistent then instead of being the atrocities they were. Maybe Penelope wouldn't have done a 180 on her whole personality and physical appearance, making her become a ruined character. Overall it really feels like they really didn't know how these characters should've developed that would make sense for a conflict.
Even though it’s unpopular to say, I liked 4 more than 3. While 4 has its issues I liked the return of the clue bottles that made the hub worlds feel more lively compared to 3’s emptiness as well as the addition of the masks and arcade machines to add a bit more to do during and after the story. Again it had issues but for Sanzaru’s first crack at the series they did a decent enough job and I hope Sony gives them another shot at it.
Sir Galahad didn’t know that until minutes after I posted the comment but for Sanzarus first crack at a NEW game in the series they did an alright job. I’d rather the IP keep getting more games rather than yet another 3rd person action adventure story based game that Sony keeps pumping out.
I hated that they made Penelope a villain in the 4th game. I didn't hate the 4th game but I did feel like it was completely unnecessary. I loved how the 3rd game ended. It didn't need to continue.
For a first-timer, this was a really nice analysis of the series! You even got what most fans, (myself included) hated about Sly 4. To add on to the stuff you brought up, there were other issues, such as the game's artificial difficulty of making nearly every hazard in the game a *one-hit kill* (makes you forget you have a health bar sometimes lol). Other than Penelope, other characters have also regressed immensely in Sly 4 like Murray being the fat joke and comic relief the entire game (the geisha mission and implied sex with El Jefe should be the... best examples of that); and the fact that in the Arabian level, the *best* idea Bentley could come up with to get through a safe door without alerting the guards in front of it is to have Carmelita scantily-clad and do a sexy belly dance to distract the guards while the gang-- being just a *few feet away* from where the guards are-- sloppily, brute force the door open. Even crazier that Carmelita, despite her prideful & refined personality of the last 3 games, was easily convinced to go along with said plan... There are some nit-picky things I found off such as Sanzaru's no attention to detail. Like how whenever their 2D cutscenes flash back to moments of the previous games, they portray characters like Sly in their new, Sly 4 design instead of their contemporary ones (i.e. Sly is shown wearing a backpack and leg pouch in flashbacks, when he actually wore either one *or* the other in the previous games). But this comment's getting long enough. To answer your concern at 8:57, even having all of Bentley's upgrades in Sly 2 wouldn't have helped you there. That's including his jetpack too-- you move very slowly while using it, especially when moving horizontally. That is also an even bigger issue in Sly 4: Each world's level designs are developed so much with Sly's moveset in mind that playing as other characters becomes tedious when getting around. Not even Carmelita's mega jump can help you scale these levels because the massive jump height from Sly 3 was *nerfed* in this game. Some final points about a few glitches you might not have noticed in the HD Collection: - In Sly 1 HD, after killing any flashlight guard or normal guard, a bass strum starts to play while Sly moves around (like at 1:52). That is *not* supposed to happen. The bass strumming is only supposed to happen when you're behind a flashlight guard, sidling on a wall over a ledge, or crawling behind short platforms (like the stairs surrounding the Panda King in his boss battle) - In Sly 3 HD, when fighting Muggshot as Carmelita, there's supposed to be boss music playing... but for some reason it doesn't. All in all, I was surprised Sony was convinced enough to give this company a chance to make Sly 4 despite them releasing a playable, but messy HD collection, and their dev portfolio being made up of 3 games up to that point-- two of which were poorly received, and one being a poorly-made PS2 port of a PSP game... But I hope you do more "first-time playing" videos like this one. I really enjoyed it!
I am sorry but you complaining about Murray's character feels forced seeing how I played the game and Murray despite having more food jokes still felt in character and definitely not " just the Fat Guy" like most people say. There are plenty of reasons to not like Sly 4, Murray's character is not one of them.
@@selfloathingweekly I know that. Read my comment again. I said the bass strumming is *only* supposed to happen when you're sneaking behind a flashlight guard or holding the circle button to stick to a wall and sidle over a ledge. In the HD remastered version, there's a glitch where if you kill a flashlight guard, the bass strumming will constantly play whenever you move around, and it'll stay that way until you kill another guard or enter a loading screen. Go play or watch gameplay of the PS2 version, you'll see that the glitch doesn't ever happen compared to the timestamp I posted in my OP. Also, no music was remixed, only remastered. The only music not present in the entire HD trilogy was the Mugshot Boss fight music in Sly 3. So it makes no sense that every other song was fine to be in the HD trilogy except for that one song if it was licensing issues. Not even Sanzaru answered when people asked about the missing song years ago, and we all just chalked it up to just another glitch they didn't fix. So how do you know that's the reason why the song isn't there?
Despite all the issues in some of the games, all the Sly games have a special place in my heart, hours spent in them as a kid was just wonderful. Replayed through 1-3 just a few weeks ago
Man i remember the time getting a PS2 from my old childhood friend and it came with Sly cooper 1. I fell in love with this raccoon and im glad i was able to get into the series.
Im sorry but, I hate Carmalita in the 4th game. Her voice is just so annoying! And her design is terrible. I like the old Carmalita. I also think they screwed the pooch on Penelope turning evil. Like, her and Bently where the cutest couple!
I'm so happy that people are still talking about Sly Cooper
Seconded on that. Some series should never be forgotten, the impact they had in their time

And then nothing was ever heard about it ever again.
January 2014 and I'm glad it didn't happen, probably would've been some mediocre shit like the RaC movie.
What do you mean nothing was ever heard?

It got canceled for a 2D tv show that is focused for the 6-10 audience and is dropping....sometime.

That would be awesome, and the final mission could have Sly’s dad and we could learn about his parents.
@Excelsior True, but they could just cherrypick ones that are still there.

I’m so happy that this franchise has stayed relevant after all these years, I always said that it was severely underrated when I was younger.
I've heard several people say Sly 4 feels like fanfiction
And looking back I can definitely see why. There's the costumes for the returning female characters, Penelope's motivations, Le Paradox is an amalgamation of half the Sly OCs out there, the time travel plot... the list goes on.
Not a bad game, but definitely not the best of the series.
In other words, Sly 3 was medicore good, Sly 1 was only but a template, Sly 2 is undisputed and Sly 4 is money spent wasted.

The demo version of sly 2 was the intro level in the museum. I must’ve played that level hundreds of times before my brother finally got a hold of the game and we could play through the entirety of it. And it was a fantastic game.
YESS SAME
I used to replay it and too make it last longer I'd try to get 5000 coins before finishing as sly
Same, but I was never able to find a copy of it in the stores ): I ordered today the Sly HD Collection for my ps3 to please my inner child.
Sly 2 is what introduced me to the series. Then I played 3. I actually didn’t play the first one till I was way older
JamPack volume 13 or 14 had Sly 3 demos in it ... I played Shaman Escapes so many times before my grandad recognized a Sly game in gamestop and we eventually got the collection
My defence for Murray's acting in 3 is this, and B-Mask does a better job of explaining this than I:
"The murray" from Sly 2 was a persona he concocted to be more "useful" to the team after his blunders in 1.
(I love the van mission though, it shows how he wont give up on something he loves ever again, and the moment where the panda king connects with his passion is fuckin MAGICAL)
Amazing video though, all criticisms are fair and valid, even if they might not bother me as much. This series definitely deserves more recognition.
same he grew so much in 3 i cant call it a downgrade hes even my favorite character i feel like he grew the most in the series
Didn’t even talk about the amazing music
my fav tracks were gunboat graveyard, high class heist, and pretty much all the songs on mugshofs lvl
Ahhhhh! Lets Dance!
But all three of those series of games look nigh impossible to get continuations/remakes of :(
The new Ratchet, Rift Apart, is an amazing game and have good references to Sly and Jak & Daxter ❤

I always felt like the plot of 3 was more “show, don’t tell.”
Dr.
Coulda been metaphorical time travel like visiting where his ancestors had once lived but that's just me
Your review was really great and because you dont have the nostalgia factor, made it a lot easier to see its flaws. Thank you
I've cracked the code.
I needed to drink unsee juice after reading this

Loved the Cooper series and Sly 2 was one of the best Play station 2 games of all time
Facts
Sly 2 is still my favorite game
I personally prefer sly 3 over 2, but ita only slightly because I love these games. Well except for 4 lol
Too bad the cutscene drags on for so long, otherwise it would have been a good moment.
Thank you for addressing the animated cutscenes and design change in Sly 4. I preferred the designs and comics cutscenes in the previous games so much more.
Sly 2 is also my favorite despite not experiencing the issues you get in the collection.
"giga-chad cooper clan"
that got a laugh out of me lmao. in hindsight that aspect of the game's lore is a big weakness for me. like why have this one family that's just straight up better than anybody else
We need to bring them back so they can reunite with their old buddy Racket.

Sly Cooper was my favorite game for the PS2 and I'm glad to see it again
Sly 4 is one of those games that I'll always love no matter it's reputation, maybe it because I'm no game genius but that's just me
I don't "love" Sly 4, but I REALLY like it.
One of my favorite details/jokes is his walking sound is the sound of a walking baseline! So glad you noticed!
This is one of my favorite video game series ever. I’m so glad you talked about it at such length. Thank you.

I can say that glitch in 3 where Sly disappears in that panda king scene was in the original as well, seems it's something the new team did not fix.

When you mention tak and the power of juju, you awoken a forgotten childhood memory. My brain: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!
34:14 thank you for including Pat in this video he has the best faces to make.

I concur! I played through the entire HD collection as well and never encountered a single of the things he did in the video
Maybe he didn't play the remastered collection. Maybe he played it on an emulator or a ps2
@@AvatarRoku999 never experienced what he did on ps2 so he might have emulated it.
@@AvatarRoku999 but he literally said he played the remastered version in the beginning of the video…
Actually Sly was sent back in the past
Yeah, it was gonna be an Egypt level that was originally planned to be in the game, then later DLC when they realized they did not have time to make it for release, and then never when the game sold poorly when Sony basically just released it to no fanfare.
honestly I'd rather see Sly in a Terminator setting than in ancient Egypt
Yah 4 was pretty ass honestly. It fundamentally ruined several characters. It’s non canon in my mind
Great video. I’m loving these sly retrospectives that I keep stumbling upon across TH-cam. It’s so cool to see people still talking about it.
good vulcan3000 ref, you ever read tge canon ending of the zatch bell manga?
the art aesthetic in sly is: no right angles; leading to designs using circular curves.
1 is my favorite, less is best.
4 continued the time travel epilogue line, showing off historical figures mentioned in 1, but faltered by having friend become a villian again.
also, kudos to director saying the closest degree to get for VG design for non-IT apt students being theatre: writing, performance, world design, music, and audience interaction.
ayyy its Jay. whats up bro?
no, i've only gotten to where the dub ended. I'll eventually go back and read the manga
It made me beyond happy to see this video pop up! These games were a massive part of my childhood and to see someone jumping into them blind this late and still enjoying them is so cool. God looks like I've gotta go start replaying!
I've never experienced the framerates issues you're talking about
I didn’t either
same never had a problem or also back then when I played it on ps2 my eyes weren't aware of +60fps like today so that could possibly be it.
I also didn't experience that horrible noise in Contessa castel it was fine for me when I played it, it could be something on his side tbh.
@@pushyrummble8625 It was only an issue with the trilogy set
I’ve played it on the PSNow Stream, the only issues I had was Input delay, which was a pain in the ass to do the Rythm boss fight in Sly 1, but overall it was fine for me.
The only part in any game where the framerates drop are the foggy parts of the miner-caves in Sly 3 in Rumble Down Under. Drops to about 10fps there but other than that, nothing.
one of my favorite game series of all time. I still play it to this day
I like carmelita's voice in 4 the best, the accent is there but subtle enough that it still sounds good.
I think Sly 2 has the best voice. Sly 4 is second though. Sly 3 is definitely worst.
I just want bluepoint to remake the trilogy so more people can experience this greatness.
@@TerrorOfTalos And fix the bugs
@@halleyangel1706 That's a given, I appreciate shitzaru making the HD collection at all but it could've been much better.
@@TerrorOfTalos It should've been so much better
@@halleyangel1706 Definitely, I'm pretty sure most of the issues were due to incompetence or laziness. I mean they were forced to make the HD collection if they wanted to develop that piece of shit fan fiction game which is barely passable at best.
Sly Cooper is one of my all time favorite video game franchises
My entire childhood I only played/owned one ps2 game and that was sly cooper. I got to play it once more two years ago as an adult and it still kicks ass.
“ I’ve always liked that Sly cooper. I don’t know why.” -Joker, Leader of the Phantom Thieves
Wait, Joker actually likes Sly Cooper?
“Yeah, I also like infamous second son” -Joker, Leader of the Phantom Thieves
And they say skull tells everyone his identity:/
Rito “He does it at the wrong time, besides I’m not saying my identity.” -Joker, Leader of the Phantom Thieves
OMG I found a p5 reference in a sly cooper vid? THANK YOU
With Murray, I think it was stated that his deeper voiced self from 2 was just an act to like make him sound stronger to be able to help the gang and try to build up false confidence, and its stated that after Bentley got crippled, he tried to keep it up but eventually ended up leaving the gang cause the guilt was too much for him to take since he believed himself was the one to blame, and he mentored under the Guru in hopes that there could be a peaceful solution to problems.
I don't understand how every god damn video of yours is of such high quality!
StormCrown emulators
Sly Cooper will always be my favourite PlayStation character and video game series.
man I love this damn game... I've played when I was little a young kid and in my teens sly four I'm almost twenty a full adult and I would love nothing but a sly 5 in my lifetime. so many great memories with these games regardless if four was not the best. I just want a damn good ending.....
I'm fascinated by the difference in the experience I had with Sly 4. I didn't hear ANY of the dialogue looping, and the quips weren't constant at all.
37:25 You could make the argument that due to the tech being left in each era, Clockwerk would use that same tech to make himself into a machine. From a different perspective, Clockwerk making himself into a machine would've been impossible without some kind of modern tech, so a time travel plot is kinda necessary? I mean, how could something like the Hate Chip exist in a medieval setting anyway, unless the components for it were left behind through time . . .
supersonicmario56 I didn't even think of that until now, GOD IM NOT WORTHY FOR CHARACTER POV THAT HAS GOOD ARGUMENTS THAT TELLS THE TIMELINE WELL!!!
I acually assumed that Le Paradox would at the end become Clockwerk and then gets troughn by the Time Machine into the Cavman Era. That that was all part of his Plan with Penelope building him a new, Stronger Bodey.
"Oh yeah, it's all coming together"
Did you watch Caddicarrus?
@@ScatterbrainPete yeah.
@@edgelord8337 The "Cooper is offensive to Europeans" thing was just a joke he came up with.
3 has the second worst story in my book.
That Zatch Bell reference gives me hope that I'm not the only one that remembered that series
I’m really happy you tried this series. I love the Sly Cooper Series
WAIT... they were going to release a dlc expansion for the real ending to 4!?
Yeah thieves in time wasn't a crappy continuation.
So sad
I just subbed to you a few hours ago after seeing your in depth persona critique and now i get this gold in my subscrition fee. Worth it
Love this series my favorite of all time. Carmelita thooooooo!!!!
growing up these were the first games i ever played and to this day my favorite games ive ever played
If we get Sly 5, I kinda hope they bring back clockwerk and Sly's dad to defeat him to finish the series. Would be epic and emotional if done right.
Same that would be great, but it would be an awesome twist if it's revealed that Clockwork is actually from the present
@@elharvey5032 Wouldn't make sense tho, clockwerk was completely destroyed in the present.
Same here, the amount of technical issues he had with 2 never happened with me, really strange.
Same, I never had the audio issue with the boss fight, or any widescreen issues.
Oh hey it's J! Love your reviews of the DCAU shows.
It was a master piece. Done
Also nice civit I'm loving these long vidoes.
15:55-15:59 i see you remember Tak and are a man of culture.
I still remember the nicklelodeon show
This review needs more love, I feel pretty much exactly the same about each game as you do!

thank you ADV Bassdrop
very cool
So Sly is stuck in time because Sony didn't like how much the game sold..
Money-hungry corporation gotta do what money-hungry corporation gotta do.
They Only had under One year for Sly 3, it was very rushed.
Some final points about a few glitches you might not have noticed in the HD Collection:
- In Sly 1 HD, after killing any flashlight guard or normal guard, a bass strum starts to play while Sly moves around (like at 1:52). That is *not* supposed to happen. The bass strumming is only supposed to happen when you're behind a flashlight guard, sidling on a wall over a ledge, or crawling behind short platforms (like the stairs surrounding the Panda King in his boss battle)
- In Sly 3 HD, when fighting Muggshot as Carmelita, there's supposed to be boss music playing... but for some reason it doesn't.
The bass strumming was intentional.
Look it up,
As for the mugshot boss fight, a lot of music was remixed or removed due to licensing issues
After playing the fourth game I always had the theory that Penelope is the one to create Clockwerk
I just recently started playing this game series again. Huge part of my childhood.
