WOW, Thank you so much. My heart broke when I saw the thumb nail. I wish my mother could of watched this review with me. First film I remember us seeing together and enjoying. Brought a tear to my eye. You guys are awesome! GREAT review.
ps the 4 hour version was the first Special VHS tape I had ever purchased, and one of the first widescreen VHS tapes I had ever owned. It had a special new cover and I LOVE the tape so much, but I remembered my mum bought it for me and at the time £20 for a VHS was LOADS of money! lol.

I am an Indian but I could relate this movie so much. I saw the 4hr version, and man was I blown away. The aesthetics, the story the handling of the screenplay, makes this a very special film and close to my heart. Gary you are probably the best reviewer I have known.
My all time favourite movie gripping from start to finish genuinely emotional scenes great music and the best movie ending ever when wind In his hair shouts to dances with wolves that he is and always will be his friend as he leaves on horseback
Epic movie indeed! It deserved all the praise it got, and it's in my opinion Costner's best work. Great job with the review, and it's nice to see you guys also loved the film as well.
very similar to the last samurai movie , Avatar was a pocahontas in space , nothing like this movie , I was really disappointed by avatar , never even finished the movie ,like Gary said this movie is a masterpiece , the last samurai was very well done but this movie is superior on cinematography and directing point of view
@Off The Shelf Reviews That's Wayne's World reference is actually a reference to a 1970's commercial about pollution. The commercial showed a Native American walking through fields of tall grasses and it's a beautiful day and everything is great and then you pan down to his feet and watch as he walks up to the shores of a small river and then you see trash at the edge of the river by his moccasin. Then they pan up to his face and he has a single tear streaming down his cheek. It was a pretty impactful ad at that time. The guy in the ad was "Iron Eyes Cody" (who actually was not even Native American, not even a little bit), anyway here's what Wikipedia says about the ad: "He also played a Native American shedding a tear about litter in one of the country's most well-known television public service announcements, "Keep America Beautiful""
The part about being unfamiliar with coffee is not unusual. Look up the long walk, where the Navajo were forced into the Bosque Redondo reserve. They were provided flour and coffee but many became ill and died as they didn't know how to prepare anything with them, until later on when they were shown how.
I watched this only once as a kid, and i still remember feeling badass for not cryin at 2socks getting shot while both my father and my sister did haha
Never got around to watching this film growing up so really enjoyed finding more out about this film and will have to watch it now, awesome as always 👊🏻
Great review guys, I started watching this movie last night after not seeing it for at least 15 years, I also found out that there was an extended cut so I stopped and will be starting it over in the coming nights. The cool thing is that my wife will be watching it for the first time.
I was lucky enough to see this one at the theater and I left feeling completely ashamed to be a white american, all because of the scene where Cisco and Two Socks are killed. I think the only film to make me cry more than this one was "Schidler's List," and I sobbed like a baby after watching that film. These two films were like a literal punch to the gut for me.
Great movie. I’m Cheyenne and Creek. And even though there’s that white savior trope. Its a complicated feeling. But it doesn’t distract from the greatness of the movie. You brought up a great idea to me. When Dunbar finds Stands with Fist. They are kinda in the same way. They both are waiting for death. But in a way. Dunbar finds life agains through the need to care for another. Costner actually did a doc about natives tribes and it’s on TH-cam. It’s called 500 nations. It’s a great watch. Also natives movies I would suggest are Smoke Signals, pow wow highway, Son of the Morning Star, Geronimo, Hostiles, Thunderheart. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Great review guys. I’ve been binge watch y’all channel for about a week. Loves y’all work.
I'm from South Dakota and have historical reenacting friends who were extras in this film. And FYI the Major who self deletes has gone insane from syphilis.
*An anxious guy goes to a doctor and says: "Doc. I don't know what's wrong but some days I feel like a wigwam and other days I feel like a teepee." The doctor says: "Well it seems your problem is you're TWO TENTS."*
This movie, I recall, stirred so many emotions. I remember saying out loud " God I hate white mother f**kers!" as I made my exit. ( I am a white female ) BTW.. It was part of the liver that Dunbar was offered as part of the heroic gesture.
Have you reviewed "The Last of the Mohicans" yet? One of my favourite performances by DDL. (Wes Studi made me think of it, since he was in both movies)
The main difference between the American natives and the white settlers of European descent is the natives live as part of nature and the Europeans attempt to master nature. For those interested in taking a deep dive into the native culture, read the novel " THE PLACE WHERE THEY CRIED". It was written by a native American. It's a difficult read emotionally but worth it. You'll come away a different person.
Watched it at a drive in with my mom. Not the first film i fell in lkve with but was certainly the first film that made me feel the true power of a film. I too was about 10.
Remember when I know about Dances and I went woooow.... Finally there will be a film that the native American are the protagonist and since then this film became so emotional to me, beside another Egyptian film when I hearing John Barry soundtrack I'm crying, when they shoot 2 socks I crying.... Till now it still had the same effect on me
Yea, the Making-Of behind _Heaven's Gate_ should be an interesting topic for them to discuss. There is even a book called _Final Cut_ by the late Steven Bach, who was the head of United Artists during HG's production, that talks about that film's development and aftermath.
That crazy commander who gave him his orders and then killed himself had syphilis. It was incurable and could cause people to go mad. That was made clear in the book, but not the movie
Fantastic film that I became a huge fan of only about 8 years ago. Interesting that your copy had an intermission. My copy is on 2 discs. The first half of the film is on one disc and it ends where yours has the intermission, and then the second half begins on the second disc.
I love this movie, and I never knew that there was an extended cut. I'm so excited to see it, I feel like Kicking-Bird after he had sugar for the first time.
Another superb review of one of my all-time favourites. I watched this one again for the nth time just a couple of weeks ago, then watched it again the next day. The following day I watched The Last Samurai - only once for that though; I think Dances With Wolves is the superior one of the two. Avatar is also very similar as you say. The first time I went to see that, I saw a lot of DWW in it. Great review, cheers lads.
The Buffalo herds were only large at this point int in time, they were never this large previously. The herds became this large due to a lack of predators, ie not being hunted by the Native Americans. Roughly 70%-80% of Native Americans had died due to illness, hence the Buffalo herds increased.
I had never had a chance to actually see this film yet, but much like many other film I have yet to see, I wholeheartedly respect it for what it is and the success it has earned, this is without doubt one of Kevin Costner's very best film in his career alongside _JFK_ and _Field of Dreams_ (in fact you guys should consider reviewing _JFK_ at some point, such an amazing political thriller, especially in its 210-min Director's Cut). I had actually gotten to watch _The Postman_ with my Pops, and we both enjoyed it for what it was, my Pops especially loved it. It was what introduced me to the Post-Apocalyptic Neo-Western subgenre, of which I am a fan of, this may be just me (and my Pops), but I do not think _Postman_ is as bad as the critics initially claim it is. I'm sorry.
Review FANDANGO. Costner, of the era you're talking about, had cred. I really liked Waterworld. I really liked The Postman. They are great Sci Fi B movies. There were issues behind the scenes of both, but that should be incidental. A weird collection of supporting players are long dead now
The English and the French introduced scalping to Indians. The governors of the colonies instituted scalping as a way for one Indian tribe to help them eliminate another tribe, and to have colonists eliminate as many Indians as possible.
Last of the Mohicans and/or Last of the Dogmen would be great reviews to accompany this film. I know you have a PayPal account have you thought about a Patreon account.
Never considered watching this film until you guys reviewed it. I never much cared for Costner and his work (Cary Elwes will always be Robin Hood to me, and he can speak with a British accent!) though I do have a soft spot for Waterworld. But now I'm off to buy a copy of Dances With Wolves.
natives really are not oppressed by the government anymore, seems you've fallen for the media hype and offended millennial take on this (i'm blackfoot and cree)
This is why Thursday is my favourite day of the week

Last time I saw an intermission? Ben-Hur
I need to see Dances with Wolves again.
At some stage this channel has to blow up in subs
I agree....they cover so many movies no others do!
Waterworld might not be a good movie objectively, but man do I LOVE watching it, lol.
Me too. I love Waterworld
I certainly do enjoy it a lot too!
My all time favourite movie gripping from start to finish genuinely emotional scenes great music and the best movie ending ever when wind In his hair shouts to dances with wolves that he is and always will be his friend as he leaves on horseback
Epic moment
Epic review, guys. As a wolf lover and part Native, I appreciate this.
Epic movie indeed! It deserved all the praise it got, and it's in my opinion Costner's best work. Great job with the review, and it's nice to see you guys also loved the film as well.
I so agree! Epic! I fell head over heels in love with this film right from the my first of many viewings.
very similar to the last samurai movie , Avatar was a pocahontas in space , nothing like this movie , I was really disappointed by avatar , never even finished the movie ,like Gary said this movie is a masterpiece , the last samurai was very well done but this movie is superior on cinematography and directing point of view
The feel of the film owes much to John Barry's incredibly moving score. What a monumental piece of music, one of the few I purchased on CD.
Damn there is so many scenes I haven't seen. I need to watch that cut .
The level of technicality and sheer epicness of this film reminds me of Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia

Interesting fact : The Native Americans learned about the art of 'scalping' their victims, from the 'spaniards' army, led by Cortez.
Great review guys, I started watching this movie last night after not seeing it for at least 15 years, I also found out that there was an extended cut so I stopped and will be starting it over in the coming nights. The cool thing is that my wife will be watching it for the first time.
I like Waterworld. Underrated.

A new study has shown that it's actually ok to be white.
First epic I ever watched on the cinema and had the same reaction.
@@ManDuderGuy Its also ok to have feelings studies show as well...

Yep That's true We did start building casinos. LOL Great line Ian.
So if I wanna rewatch the movie it should be the extended or ?
Yes the extended version offers something different make sure you have 4 hours to spare though
Watched it at a drive in with my mom. Not the first film i fell in lkve with but was certainly the first film that made me feel the true power of a film. I too was about 10.
Waterworld next please it's one of my favorites
After watching this review I would love to see one for last of the mohicans. Very very special film to me.
Great review you guys! Keep it up!
Thanks for this suggestion of the Academy Awards. Do Driving Miss Daisy next.
Speaking of epics, how about Apocalypse Now?
Dances with Wolves, Apocalypto, and Thunderheart are my favorite films on Native Americans
Such a fantastic film. I've been wanting to see a great in depth review for it so thank you guys so much 😁

Another request. Seraphim Falls 2006. You guys rock.
Please review Little Big Man 1970 Dustin Hoffman. If you haven't seen it I think you guys would like it, similar to Dances With Wolves.
A Man called Horse is similar.
Seeing a review of a western epic; it would be great to see a look at Heaven's Gate (1980)

can someone tell me how to get that star wars hat that lain has?
We bought the hat for my son years ago in a clothes shop called Primark :) - Iain
You guys distract me from astronomy videos. Good stuff. You guys are cool beans. 😎
Great review of a great film mates! Keep up the great work!
I LOVE THIS BEAUTIFUL MOVIE +WHAT A SOUNDTRACK
If it matters, we aren't from India, we prefer Native rather than Indians. Cheers from Canada.
I love this movie, and I never knew that there was an extended cut. I'm so excited to see it, I feel like Kicking-Bird after he had sugar for the first time.

What a great review for a beautiful movie. Especially by describing the diversity between the Sioux-characters. Good point!
But they do not point out the diversity of the different Lakota ( Souix) bands,
You're right about the casinos. :D
2 English men saying the Americans were a bit harsh for the way they treated the natives, hmmmmm
Seems like our classics are far superior to current movie productions. Stay with classics, please !

The English and the French introduced scalping to Indians. The governors of the colonies instituted scalping as a way for one Indian tribe to help them eliminate another tribe, and to have colonists eliminate as many Indians as possible.
I really like this movie and how they portrayed how Native Americans could be so terrible i feel that historians like to romanticize them
i love This film a Lot so thanks guys

Dances with wolves

How about a Men in Black review?

Amazing movie amazing review
Seems perfect for dylan when he's been bad again
If you liked this, you should maybe check out "Little Big Man" with Dustin Hoffman.
The algorithm doesn't like this channel for some reason
Michael Praed is fucking Robin Hood!
Weird, when I am ill I watch Waterworld or the Postman but never this one. Too much thinking I guess.
Drive review please
You guys got stuff wrong lol but thanks 😊
I need to do a guest review with you guys #proudshelfer

The one problem I had with this movie was the narration and the running time.
It's My Birthday on Today and I am Age 26 now Gary & Iain ok

Tom Shore Carey elwes is British himself...he's lived in the states for a very long time.
I need to rewatch Men In Tights now 😂
but was it better than Goodfellas?
Equal in epicness
Equal talent
Equal memorable moments I'd say both movies match in greatness for other different reasons
Great choice, I've never seen this myself
