Regarding Remington’s death, the scream at the very end of Kilmer’s dream is actually Charles Remington. The way it’s shot makes it seem like it’s just Val Kilmer screaming from the nightmare, but as the scene progresses he slowly realizes what happened when he sees the tent.

Good review. I always loved this film, and score by Jerry Goldsmith is one of my favorites from him. I would love to see Stephen Hopkins' original cut, and making of documentary about entire troubled production.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. It was scary on the big screen. I still think it's a great movie and story.

The Chicago Natural History Museum has both the lions from this movie stuffed and on display. They’re so close you can touch them. Imagining them alive and even larger (all taxidermy shrinks the body), they’re absolutely frightening.

    • @keithdean9149
      @keithdean9149 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

They also had to use the pelts from other lions to do the taxidermy work. Patterson had the lions made into rugs and in doing so some of the original pelts were cut away and there wasn't enough to make a full body mount.

Fun fact: in Latin America the film was called "Garras" ("Claws"), wich seems to be a play on "Jaws", except that Jaws was called "Tiburón" ("Shark").

Thing is, given that we know sounds in the real world manifest in dreams, it's possible the sounds of his wife and the lion eating her may have actually been Remington being killed.

This actually sounds like a film that deserves a directors cut.

They should make a sequel with tigers instead of Lions. Michael Douglas can return as the ghost of Remington.

Guys, if you like Val Kilmer and you haven't seen it, you need to review Thunder Heart. Arguably one of Val's best ever performances in a fantastic film. Directed by Michael Apted who is most famous for directing the 7UP documentaries. Do yourselves a favour and watch it.

I saw this film when I was still in the single digit years of age. The soundtrack is fabulous and probably Jerry Goldsmith's best score. And the film is a guilty pleasure of mine despite the shoddy editing and obvious low budget and production difficulties.

No remake please. But if there is material for a Directors cut, take my money! This is the kind of movie, you can't really point out exactly what makes it good, "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts”, is what I would say.
It also have something most movies of 2010+ do not have, it draws you into it's universe in an instant.

  • @PittsburghSportsFan43

I've read The Maneaters of Tsavo, and the movie is pretty accurate to the book. As I was reading it I'd think of scenes from the film to visualize how this all played out. As far as Remington, I'm not sure he was entirely fictional. I think they took the characteristics of two or three people who played minor roles and just combined them into one guy. And honestly, fictional or not Remington was a good addition to the film and Michael Douglas was really good in the role.
If you watch the dream sequence again you can tell that Patterson is hearing Remington scream, it's just melding with his wife's cries in the dream.

Val Kilmer was also going through a divorce as he was doing this film so I forgive him if the critics say the performance of Val was bad. And there were months on end where the lions had attacked other camps which is why they think the lions could have killed and eaten more than 135. Have you guys actually read the book? Because you would know that already. Mahina was based on Ungan Singh. Only The Ghost had a tooth problem. Patterson would say he shot it with his rifle. The Darkness was as healthy as sin. These lions were maneless males which is why they manage to get through the bomas.

You mentioned with a bigger budget the set-pieces would have been bigger. Living in Africa for years now I visited some sites founded during colonial times, and it all originally is very small scale, not only because back then Africa was only thinly populated but also due to big empty stretches of land. And railway often was just nothing more than railtracks going from nowhere to nowhere.

Hard to take Stephen Hopkins story as truth, tbh. This is the guy who directed Lost in Space, after this film, and proceeded to make an absolute mess of that franchise. (Probably was distracted as he was involved in a relationship with Heather Graham at the time).
And then many years later he made The Reaping. Guy seems like he couldn't make a good movie if he was paid to.

Val Kilmer is an actor whom I feel really never gets his due, he's utterly brilliant as the 'Mentor' in True Romance, Ice Man in gay subtext fest Top Gun, Jim Morrison in The Doors, excellent as Batman, (you really buy the idea that he's this deranged millionaire who moonlights as a goth vigilante) and he absolutely steals the show in the superb Tombstone, his Doc Holiday is magnificent (much like Fagin in Oliver. Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica or Han Solo in Star Wars he's not the lead character but he's the one you remember). Unfortunately he really seems to have lost the plot recently, although frankly nothing could ever be as bad as 'The Islands of Dr Moreau' which verges on Alien 3 levels of appallingness. As for his Irish accent it truthfully isn't that bad, better than Tom Cruise in 'Far and Away' or David Boreanaz in 'Buffy' or numerous other infinitely worse examples. I remember watching the scene in this film in a cinema in Bangor County Down and when he sang 'The Old Orange Flute' and quoted the line "It's Six Miles from Bangor to Donaghadee" the entire audience roared. Colonel Patterson is a true British hero, not only triumphing here but fighting in the Boer War, being one of the founder members of the UVF and heading the Jewish Legion in the Great War he's a character straight out of Conan Doyle, W.E Johns and John Buchan. Personally I feel it's a great film, it could have been OTT but actually it's quite grounded, not needing to go to the supernatural for its' thrills but sticking more or less to the real story, Michael Douglas could have ruined it but his low-key death salvages the film. It's amazing how much it's been forgotten over the years? I guess maybe we are so ultra-sensitive towards depictions of Western imperialism in Africa these days? Although I actually think it's quite balanced, we have the religious idealist, the ruthless capitalist, the hopeful cynic and Paterson who falls somewhere in between, the railway workers a mixed lot far from the stereotypes of the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies. I remember reading the true story first in Willard Price's 'Lion Adventure' and really the actual lions put the Great White Shark in 'Jaws' to shame , over nine feet in length and killing at least 35 workers (whilst the real shark Jaws was based on was only was only 9 foot long and only killed 5 people). We know that the supernatural and paranormal aren't real but the caveman within us all still has a primordial fear of that sabre toothed tiger?

Val Kilmer should have been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Tombstone imo! He was fantastic in that film.

Just discovered your channel and have been diving into your great reviews.
Late comment: but for context, on looking into this I feel some of the history presented is somewhat incorrect. The lions in Tsavo apparently gained a taste for man flesh mainly from the Arab slave trade that predominantly used that area before the British pushed them out. The Arabs would travel in caravans - I use the term loosely, but you get the idea - with the slaves in huge lines, usually fastened to one another by collars, either on the neck or ankles. Given how poorly they were treated - barely enough food, barely enough water, and certainly no medical attention - a lot of these poor people died or were abandoned along the route. These were removed from their collars and just left where they lay. This is where it is believed the lions gained their particular appetite from. The sheer amount of wasted lives ensured the lions never went hungry until the British put a stop to the land caravans.
Also, to note, the workers on the line were not slaves. First off, the British tried to employ the local Africans to work on the project. They refused, being well aware of the wildlife. Instead they would agree to act as guides or perimeter scouts. So, that avenue failing, the British employed Indian workers who would be shipped in en masse instead. I am not saying they didn’t encounter harsh work environments or that the workers didn’t suffer injustices, but they were not slaves. They were paid in nuggets of gold or similar precious metal. Obviously, this could not just be posted back to their families on the subcontinent, so the nuggets were kept until they had enough to cast them into bangles they would wear on their wrists during the construction. Once the project was complete, if they survived the hardships, they would return home where the bangles would then be melted down.
Another unnecessary change here, God knows why, are the three Indians used in the lion trap. They were not prisoners, but rather Sepoys - professional Indian infantrymen again paid for their services. I’m more convinced the poor men went deaf from letting off their guns in such a tight space rather than anything to do with the lion roaring.
Another interesting fact seldom mentioned is why the Tsavo lions were immune to the bomas - fortified enclosures usually made of local wood. The reason is the Tsavo lions don’t have manes. Whereas normal lions do, which were thought to catch on the branches and or thorns in the bomas. The Tsavo lions, however, could crawl through without getting snared in them. Food for thought.
No one sensible denies the British participation in the triangle trade, but a lot do ignore that we were the first global super power to realise it was a toxic industry that no amount of moral justification or amount of money made worth it. These were people who had a right to their freedom and we used our power, our finances, and our navy to put a stop to. The loan alone to buy the freedom of these slaves was £20 million back then (2.4 billion today). It may not have been the best method, but it was the quickest to guarantee their release. It was finally repaid in 2015. While not everyone back in the day agreed with the Abolition, most of the British working class, themselves living in utter poverty, took to this moral crusade and raised money to support it. I am tired of seeing films always making out that this sincere belief reduced to just a moustache twirling villain’s offhand, sneering comment.
Slavery is not a cut and dried issue. There will always be arguments about the how, the why, what other avenues may or, may not have been explored in efforts to allow the Abolitionists to stamp out this vile trade, but that is just how human history works. It is a tapestry made up of many blankets, each a different view on the same issues and events. Just one thing, don’t doubt the sincerity of the Royal Navy sailors and marines of the West Africa Squadron (and their other units in the blockade of Africa) or the native Kru people who helped them.
Between 1830 - 1865, almost 1,600 sailors died on that station, mainly due to tropical disease.
Apologies for length, please keep up the great work.

Its also cool that its based on a true story and real events. However that being said yes the two lions really are in the museum of natural history?Well if i'm wrong about which museum its been a very long time since i've watched this film. Any how the one guy says near the end of the film about them being in a museum in Chicago IL.s. And its true in fact I looked up images of them and they look nothing like the lions in the film.

If it was made today, the film would be starred by a mary sue that kills the lions by punching them in the teeth, to give a lesson to patriarchy.

No. Remington and Jack Colton are two different characters. Just played by the same actor.

will schwarting have you seen it? I wanted to see it, then I heard Arnold is only in it for 8 minutes despite being all over the movie trailer

Joesph Bird yes I have seen it. You do see him a lot in the film and you don't at the same time. It's really low budget and I'm assuming it's because they had to pay Arnold for that little screen time. It's written by SNL cast members and it's fucking hilarious. Hands down one of Arnold's best roles as far as character goes.

    • @Crushbra

I hope to see it soon. Arnold takes interesting roles. Its probably a similar situation Willem Dafoe had when he made Boondock Saints. He was only on set for like 2 days or so. Arnold has a busy schedule i guess

I saw this stinker in the cinema. Siskel and Ebert made fun of this film saying that the lion attacks look like someone threw a lion shag carpet on the victims and shook it for effect.
