I always thought that the recurrence of UPSIDE DOWN Shots were a big clue that elijah had something to do with the train crash. 1= davids kid is watching the tv upside down first seeing the train crash.
2= elijah sees his 1st comic book upside down.
3= elijah falls down the subway stairs and his view is upside down
4=elijah finds the comic of sentry man in the store. The comic is upside down.
5= The scene when david visits the train wreck, the "Keep Out" sign on the fence is upside down.
Is it me or is the clue - Train wreck = Elijah Price. He did it!

Might also have something to do with his up-side-down view of the world, which turned him into a villain.

You guys forgot to mention Blade which came out before the big 2000's superhero boom. With that being said you should review the Blade trilogy!

I love how Shyamalan went out of his way to cast Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson against type, and show everyone they can do subtle dramatic acting. Chevy Chase tried to do the same with "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" but it didn't work out but here, with "Unbreakable", it really worked for Bruce and Sam. Same way Bruce Willis showed his dramatic acting chops in "The Sixth Sense" beforehand.

Love this film, was a great experience in the cinema, have watched multiple times and really dig the feel of the film. I thought Split was real good also, but for me Unbreakable is solid all round with amazing music and maybe one of Bruce Willis's best that ended his awesome run of movies from the 90's.

  • @xenablossom4682

Many say that Unbreakable got screwed over by its marketing campaign since the studio basically forbade Shyamalan from describing it as a comic book superhero movie for whatever reason. Then they made the trailers in such a way that gave people the wrong idea that Unbreakable was some kind of psychological thriller.

Definitely an underrated masterpiece and Shyamalan's masterpiece of filmmaking. The film should be re-released worldwide so that the box office results from 2000 can increase, that would make the film and cult fans happy. This should definitely deserve a re-release.

Another delightful deconstruction between you both, as a big fan of the Director & his films I quite enjoyed your take on it! I loved this film & have it & most of his others in my massive library, I too await the sequel. Loved "Signs", probably my last big favorite of his next to recent "Split". I would love to see you both review "Split" if you haven't already!

This film has become my favorite Shyamalan film, it is possibly his most criminally underrated film ever, a true work of art from him, an amazingly stellar, deconstructed-&-grounded take on the superhero film genre, and one of Bruce Willis' very best roles. I love how it shows what would happen if someone miraculously survived a freak accident and starts to realize he may be a superhero.
I was really surprised by _Split,_ quite possibly James McAvoy's very best roles as a man suffering from DID with 24 personalities. I was happy to realize that it was a standalone sequel to _Unbreakable,_ and am very much excited for _Glass_ this month, I don't care if it turns out underwhelming, I'm not gonna let any negativity derail my attempt to enjoy it.

It's going to be revealed at the end of Glass that the Unbreakable universe takes place in an intergalactic no fly zone where the people living in it live like they did in the old days and Bruce Willis is a descendant of the aliens from Signs.
Big world out there for Shyamalan

I had a similar experience with this film when it first came out. I absolutely loved it, but all of my friends thought it was slow and boring (granted we were in Middle School at the time, so maybe their opinions have changed since then). Ultimately I feel like I was on the right side of history, considering this movie has amassing quite a cult following and in a couple of months there will be a trilogy of movies set in this universe.

I really loved this film in the theatre, I was pretty upset that no one wanted to talk about it with me!
In Split, it is the end, and ... THAT MUSIC pops up. Somehow I remembered it. That is how good that film is. SO, I went through many ideas at once. Pft, how original, composer ... wait, it isnt' similar, it is exactly UNBREAKABLE? then that means .... OH MY GOOOOOOD HOW COOOOOOL!
I was so happy! Lots of people in the theatre also enjoyed that part, so lots of them must have seen and remembered Unbreakable and loved that connection. They were kind of taken out of the movie with the twist of McElroy, but they loved this part.
What is interesting is that UNBREKABLE and SPLIT are different genre movies form each other. So it makes me really curious what will be done with GLASS.

I've heard that in the original longer screenplay, David was going to save Casey and the two other girls from Kevin at the end of the film before Shyamalan replaced them with the Orange Man and the family he takes hostage, and moved Kevin and the girls into what became Split.

a theory about signs (not mine): the aliens aren't aliens they're demons and the world just assumed they were aliens, its not water that kills them or hurts them its holy water (Mel Gibson's a Reverend)...... there's a deleted scene in unbreakable, bruce Willis lifts the NFL players weights

Great review, I love this film. For the subject matter that it's tackling, it's such a quiet film in so many place. I thought the score was amazing. And funny enough since you guys mentioned it I'll tell you something interesting. When I was 11 yrs old, I suffered a trauma. My life was in danger and I subsequently suppressed it. So much so that I had no memory of it until an event that snapped it back into my consciousness when I was 30. So that can happen to people, it's wild.

This was one of the those chilling films that stayed with me a long time and I hope you guys clarify what for me is the point and I may be totally wrong so please help me out 🙏🏼 Especially on how I see or read the ending which is not as the big twist I was waiting for after the unexpected shock to the final moments of “6th Sense” but more a surprise for the lack of something complicated. Almost anticlimactic was the simpleness of explanations that caught me off guard …for not catching me off guard. Almost a twist in reverse was learning that Elija’s character is simply that of a sick sick man carrying out his deadly deeds as a miserable victim whose self-pitying mess of a life asks “why me?”

A lot more to the film and characters than that 1 aspect of an ending where I wish there were an twist. …. but it’s what I found most disturbing, someone so seemingly weak and ineffectual could wreak as much havoc and misery in a world he later remarks “needs a hero…”
. “We could sure use a hero…” Definitely. To offset the self-imposed role of martyrdom by some who hope in crying victim their vile acts of destruction will escape accountability.

I didn’t buy the relationship between Bruce Willis and his wife at all. That dynamic almost took me out of the movie. I’m sorry but if you’re in the early process of separating from your husband, and he is the soul survivor of a horrific accident, you’re gonna give him a huge hug. Most likely you’re going to have sex with him and instantly regret it, or you’re going to have a private scene crying. This isn’t your college boyfriend that fucked your whole frat house. You tried to build a life and a family with this guy. This is where m knight started to show his weakness for manufacturing awkward drama at the expense of the humanity of these characters. This relationship dynamic would set the stage for that stupid couple in the happening.
