    After 38 years, still a great introduction to soldering.

    Why can't more people speak as clearly as this presenter? I find this much easier to follow than most of the videos on the subject today. As they say, "Old, but Gold."

    • @TokyoXtreme
      @TokyoXtreme 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Rachel Maxwell the presenter was a professional announcer for a news station, and the director of these films was likely highly experienced as well. These were the days before diversity-hire tokenism.

      @@TokyoXtreme Perhaps you already know this, but the presenter is Paul Anthony, who was a "voice talent" in Washington DC for many years. I used to record him for NASA radio shows in the late 1980s. I think he was the voice of Washington Week in Review for 50 years.

    • @G5Hohn

      It's because people used to recognize that speaking effectively was important. No "um" or "yeah" or similar. The presenter is a skilled professional, and he is reading a well-written technical script.
      Basically, we stopped valuing effective writing and speaking, stopped teaching it, and stopped mastering it.

      because knowledge and understand are very different from mumbo jumbo. These videos are like the science of soldering. Truly excellent.

    Some people commented on the clarity, etc. This is an example of how to convey info as efficiently as possible, instead of scripting endless drivel merely to drag out a video for 'monetizing' on TH-cam.

    This series was great. I watched it just for entertainment. Not even sure how I wound up here (or rather, on the first lesson). Despite it's obvious age this was a way better teaching series than most I've seen. Straight-forward, to the point, clearly spoken, easily understood, many TH-camrs that try to teach things could learn a lot about creating videos just from watching these. Now I want to order up a soldering test kit or 5 and find my soldering iron. XD

    SMT actually goes all the way back to the 1960's. The Saturn 1B and Saturn V had SMT components in their Launch Vehicle Digital Computers as well as some of the microcircuits in some of the Avionics of the first F-111's. Unlike the majority of the 0402/01005 or even the 6332/2512, they were more like the "planar mounts" like shown in the video. IBM pioneered SMT in 1960.

      According to this site (hackaday.com/2017/06/29/key-to-soldering-pace-yourself/) and this one (th-cam.com/video/-oyyw2MAyyE/w-d-xo.html) his name is Paul Anthony, and he was a weatherman on Washington DC TV station WDVM in the 1980's, the same timeframe as the PACE soldering videos. In the second link, go to the 6:00 mark and you'll see and hear him. His distinctive voice is unmistakable. Haven't been able to find any info on whether he's still with us.

    Tip 1. You need good quality solder, not cheap Chinese crap (yes, it really does matter!). I have used Kester and it works like a charm.
    Tip 2. You need a good quality iron with good quality tips. Don't waste your money on cheap Chinese crap. Buy the good stuff or you will have a very bad time. Hakko and Weller are the ONLY brands to trust. There are many knock offs and scams of Hakkos and Wellers, so be careful and double check the amazon/ebay seller.
    Tip 3. Soldering TIps are NOT interchangeable. You must buy the tips that go with your brand and soldering iron model. BE VERY CAREFUL OF KNOCKOFF TIPS!!! DO NOT BUY THESE!!!
    Tip 4. See tips 1-3
    Happy soldering!!!

    • @tookitogo
      @tookitogo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      companymen42 Agree, except for #2: Weller and Hakko most certainly are not the only trustworthy brands. In fact, they’re not even the best! For starters, PACE is still around and makes top notch gear. But Ersa, JBC, and Metcal comprise the other world-class professional soldering gear makers.

    i have learned alot from these videos, but one thing that is missing. you do not want to bridge connections such as the bridge made at 2:29 bridges are BAD

    • @MyronWooley
      @MyronWooley 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The bridging is intentional. The solder pad is wide, to accommodate both leads. However, bridging two leads that are not supposed to go together is indeed bad.
