My sister and I were raised wealthy. We had everything we needed or wanted growing up. I went to college and my sister decided to live a life of drugs and using others. She’s now living in a homeless tent city in Hawaii. She’s so far gone I don’t recognize her personality or voice. It’s sad. But she won’t accept treatment.. only money and things she chooses. Some people are just beyond help. Can’t do it anymore.
Nobody is beyond help. It's just up to them. Nobody on earth can influence them to stop until THEY decide to. (Edit: I don't believe this anymore. There's a bit of truth to it. It's not the whole truth.) I'm sorry for your heartbreak. My love died a year ago on the streets of Long Beach. I wasn't in touch with him for 7 years. I was so broken hearted and angry that he wouldn't/couldn't stop using. I was and still am FURIOUS with a system that incarcerates the mentally ill and homeless and substance abusers, then offers them NOTHING in care. NOTHING. We wrote a couple of hundred letters to each other the last 3 years of his life. I still loved him, slways will. I wish I would have stayed in contact with him before that. If love could fix addiction, millions would still be with us. Again, I'm sorry about your sister.
I have a daughter in the same boat. I think it is mental illness. Our system is set up so the mentally Ill person has to choose to get help. If they were that rational, they wouldn't be mentally I'll.
And, I'm wrong. It isn't wholly up to them to make their own decisions when they are mentally ill and brain damaged from injury and substance mis-use. I wish I could go back and I would have never abandoned him. He would always have gotten a loving word and any kind of helo I could offer whether he was using or not. Al-anon is bullshit. You have to protect yourself from the pain of the addict you love over and over and over again. But abandonment? No contact? I would never go that route again. It's broken me.
And unlike in other places you can say ( f#### this I'll sleep outside) not paying 85% of my wages for rent. In Chicago in the middle of winter you CAN'T really do that. HOWEVER many people can't afford Chicago or whatever cold city they're in. They are homless or on the verge of being so allredy. Maybe as example ( they live in a car) it's probably a 1995 and still running okay so it's in good shape for being as old as it is. Have no job or a part time job 3 days week. Well if you in such a situation find somebody to give you $2,000 for that car and it's let's say November.. Well you might head out to Hawaii sleep outside in Chicago? Or in Honolulu? That's a no brainer

All national providers AT&T Sprit Verizon they work Thier. Just maybe you'll get a job. Perhaps a part time job but a little money. As mention I got unemployment. Looking back a couple guys had part time work.. 1 gut worked at a car wash 3 or 4 afternoons for $10/ hour. So he got around $200/ week. Enough to pay his phone bill ride the bus also shower at 24 hour fitness but obviously not money contruant to what is needed to get a place to live. Beets being outside in Colorado in winter. I can't remember is Planet Fitness is out in Hawaii or not. 24 hour fitness and I think Cross Fit is also. But you don't have to go just to shower and plug in the phone. Also in Honolulu you DON'T need a car. The bus is actually better then New York. All of then run up until midnight and some routs do operate 24 hours. So you'll be okay without that car. No special name for it.. Not Honolulu Transit or anything they simply call it ( The Bus) so do what you do

Somebody said only about 14% of L.A. homeless are from somewhere else, yet when interviewing people who work with L.A. homeless, they say that "more than 1/2" of the homeless are NOT from L.A. I say only L.A. homeless RESIDENTS, especially those who have worked in and contributed to it, get services first before any non-L.A. homeless get services.

That depends.. So somebody took my razors and phone charger. But do keep in mind unlike on the mainland crime is lower. You can for example ( kill somebody in Dallas still thier car dump it off at a groucrie store walk into the greyhound bus station pay cash say your name is Zack Johnson jump on a bus to Chicago 1/2 way thier from St. Louis Peter Jones buys anouther ticket to Los Angeles) can't do that in Hawaii. I can say lowest crime then in other places because weather it be 1) the police or 2) your victem or victims family/ friend comming after you.. HOWEVER it's handled they won't have to go far to find you. The old saying you can run but you can't hide. Well Hawaii you might hide for a little while ( like a week or 2) but you can't run very far. So it why less crime then most places
Theres homeless on all the islands Maui and big Island as well as Kauai I say pay them minimum wage too pick up the trash and garbage Rubbish on all the islands gives them something too do and they can make a little rent and food money for themselves and also keeps the islands cleaner which i dont know on the other islands but In MAUI county it is really bad especially on the beaches and park areas very sad was not like rhis 10 years ago.🤕😭😭😭😢😢
While I can understand the frustration at the idea of one area sending homeless people to Hawaii if they don't have a support system like family, friends, etc here but I highly doubt they're just randomly offering people one way flights. Years ago before I moved back to Hawaii I worked in homeless veteran outreach in Austin Tx. There were programs that would buy people tickets *only* if they had someone on the other end that would say they had somewhere to go for at least 3 months. Obviously this can be abused by someone giving the counsler a number of a friend who will say whatever they need to say to get the ticket but there isn't an easy way to verify if the other person is actually in Hawaii. In general I see most of this as a lot like only treating a nose bleed when it is a brain tumor that is causing the nose bleed. If you chart housing costs against wages and adjust for inflation it is obvious that this problem has been steadily getting worse for years. There is a strong correlation between that trend and the trend of increasing homelessness. I don't really have an easy one size fits all solution to this problem but I can say that what we're currently doing is only kicking the can down the road so someone else somewhere else has to deal with it later.
3 basic needs of people: Food. Clothing. Shelter. All 3 found on Hawaii. Yet bear in mind these islands are isolated far from other mainlands so what they provide in the way of these necessities are limited and EXPENSIVE. Homeless is homeless no matter where one goes. So it wise and the course of good judgement in doing their research, even visiting the islands 1st so they can experience the REALITY of what it is to live homeless on these islands before making such a decision. You could very well spare yourself much frustration amd sadness.

After a century or so of being exploited by the government for its natural resources, I think of that sign on Molaka'i (I believe) near the airport which reads- "Thank you for visiting our home. When you are finished, LEAVE" (or something to that effect) In the near future, if possible I would love to take a trip oit and visit the Islands. If we do, we are determined to show the utmost respect for the native people of Hawaii and the place they call home while we are there. In the meanwhile, during the duration of this pandemic, I hope you all are experincing at least much needed respite from all that tourism. Mahalo
i think the main motivation to poeple wanting to live in hawaii despite being in poverty is the year round warm weather. im also guessing poeple go to great lengths just to get out there which makes me think its something of a last resort for them. because most comunities in the mainland seem to treat thier homeless inhumanely.
If ppl can survive in Cali and ny they can in Hawaii I moved to Nc to Hawaii got a job at Waikiki castle hotel within a week I got there living in a one bedroom apt while finishing my education now living in a condo down town Honolulu all this was 5 years ago some ppl want that luxury life but U gotta crawl b4 you walk.
Was at IHS , but I went to Ft Tripler for a impatient program and left the program early due to some issues... Almost got stuck... Was over in Barbers point also Along with IHS Honolulu..Had to live in a tent alot of the time with another person and do drugs so people didn't think I was a fed...Glad I'm gone , tired of walking China Town...Good luck and God bless to people in the streets out there ✊ They gotta figure out how to get more and affordable housing for the folks out there... Wrong. I am a person who recently moved here back in 2013 from the mainland. I have been a working homeless person here since then by choice. I have also been homeless off and on over the years in several states. Each time I was employed full time. They are representing this issue wrong.
And working well you can afford to pay a phone bill ride the bus and such but makes since if you're not gainfully employed full time why spend 80%-90% of your income on a place? It's not like you're in Chicago or a cold weather city in the middle of February
Vagabond For the last two years I lived in two different boarding house there in Honolulu. I paid between $525 & $535 for one room , utilities included. I found that to be reasonable. There are low rent places for single men there. Single men make up the majority of the homeless. The problem that I ran into there was that there wasn’t a lot of boarding house which makes it hard for minimum wage men to find housing. There also was no boarding houses that were managed or subsidized by the state. The state kicks single men to the curb when it comes to housing.
@@myperspective5091 you know many large cities that's become the case. In Miami I paid $100/ week. So $400/ month ( well 28 days) HOWEVER point being 95% + of such arrangements are for males. Granted of course NOT as many single women would be in such need but their are enough around that we do need a more such options for the ladies then what few exist. As we know you DON'T have to be all brotherly loving community but we're grown men not little boys. So just behave yourself and be respectful of your fellow man and thoes situation work out okay. So $525/ month is cheap by Honolulu standards. I guess the hope like in other such places that keep working for 6 months or so hopefully you'll be able to get you're own place or at least a privet room down the line.

I think it’s more of a deterrent. I understand that the low income residents, already living there, are homeless. So everyone that wants to live on the beach for free, cannot just save up, and hop a plane ✈️ Could you imagine the mess?
Hawaii's resources are very limited compared to the mainland though, its putting unnecessary strain on the system to help people who are not state residences. if they're natives or from Hawaii then its a different story and of course the recourses need to be put to them, but they're talking about those who fly in just for the beach homeless lifestyle from the mainland (which sadly is a thing)
My friend use to work at a shelter intake place here and She said I wouldnt believe how many ppl come here within 2 weeks to a month head to the shelter to see if they can get a spot or even Demand a spot. Not uneducated, Not super poor, had a not bad life in the mainland said they just wanted to be here in hawaii. Made me sick. I told her I couldnt do her job 🤣. She said they usually get denied cause obviously they dont really need help like others do but they still try and Argue to the core.
A long time ago, I voted for Rep Mizuno because of an issue that was important to me at the time, although I definitely did not agree with some of the other stuff he supports and sponsors. But I actually got to know him some years later. I can say that one thing is for sure: John Mizuno cares very deeply about Oahu and the people he represents. He is trying to make this island a better place.
I came to Hawaii in 1968 to go to UH for summer school. I took all my savings and worked also. We knew we had to work to be able to live there. We also had the upmost respect for the beautiful people of Hawaii. It was the experience of a lifetime and I still live by the values I learned of Aloha. There is vast land in the offing on a beach. Secondhand boats are collected. The boat is offered to a street person. They take a boat and move to the offing. It's their freedom whether it's fixed in the offing whether it floats on the Pacific Ocean.

Before coming here to Hawaii. The homeless person is mislead to believe they can live off the land with farming and fishing. So they take the opportunity and a one way ticket from there government in the state they are in and head for Hawaii.
Some times they are as low as $250 from the west Coast. Homless people who have a little bit of money like from work for a cash a part time job or unemployment can manage to scrape together $250. I lived outside in Honolulu from December 2013/May 2014. I received $208 week in unemployment agree my job got shut down to road construction. So every other Wednesday I received $416 on my card. Found a fight for $239+ taxes and baggage fees $262. Couldn't find a lagitimate job in Hawaii. May 2014 I ended up working in Alaska. Been working in Montana Texas and Florida all this time up until this year. I went back to Alaska 2020 summer season due to covid 19. I'm doing better then I was 7 years ago. I'm pretty well established in Florida these days. Honestly if I wasn't established I just might become a Hawaii Alaska Seasonal hopper. Well looks like I may be a Florida Alaska Seasonal hopper again in 2021

I definitely would only visit Hawaii and plan on a return to the Mainland if not extraordinarily wealthy and contributing to Native Hawai’ian stability (worked in a Kaiser Permanente Texas call center handling retiree cases in the region, already have, but would want to think bigger). I might move to Mazatlan with less money for a temperate climate. It’s nice.
This report is over 3 years old, going on 4. So how did that work out ? Here on the mainland, Nevada got in trouble for putting people on buses to get them out of the State. I'm not sure how many had mental disabilities, only remember reading about it. I live in Az.
Yup. It was a behavioral health facility in Las Vegas. They loaded mental health patients up with drugs and stuck them on busses to California. They called it "Greyhound therapy". Typical Las Vegas actually; mostly soulless, skill less, entitled morons live in/run Las Vegas.
Like the program is going to help. The mainlanders will just take a vacation , knowing their ticket back is paid for. Allow mainlanders to come, if they have a job waiting for them. Like us taxpayers don’t have enough burdens already. Take care of our own homeless first.

It's like Gilligans Island. Sure they might not contribute to property taxes. Likewise, I'd bet they're not adding to traffic congestion many complain about online. The blue tarp rooftop is an eyesore beside the road. How about that designated tent community I read about. That could be a good idea. Could we build a tiny home community, add a tourist strip near the neighborhood and get the folks working again. Sometimes people need a positive boost to get their mojo working again. Hawaii has a plan to send all the mainland homeless people back to the mainland. Unfortunately, this will not work because I am working on a plan to move all of the homeless people in my town to Hawaii.
The main problem that these politicians seem to be missing is that, most people are homeless because they don't have family or friends that can or, will help them. Many people are homeless partly because their families have turned their backs on them and there is nothing these politicians can do to change that. What it really will amount to is, is a clandestine method to quietly railroad "down and outers" out of town.
... and make these "down and outers" return to their own states to pay for and provide the services that they need. As in California, we don't want out-of-state homeless coming to CA and further overload our homeless assistance programs and resources and deny homeless CA residents the assistance that they need. It's amazing that homeless people from other states come to CA to live as homeless people and perhaps worse yet to expect CA to provide them free housing when they've contributed nothing to this state.
Actually, most of the homeless in California are from California. There are a lot that aren't but Americans are free to live in which ever American state they choose. You allow illegals to travel to whichever state they choose. Why not Americans. You make it a crime to be "down and out." A lot of successful people have been "down and out" at one time or other. We should all be as fortunate as some working class heroes. As for services, the homeless rarely get services that they need. You have old run down studios going for $1800-$2000 a month. $8.50 ain’t going cut it. I was born and raised in O’ahu I left in 96 cause cost of living was just getting ridiculous. I had a good paying job but rent was ridiculous high and still found myself living paycheck to paycheck.

Well it's NOT so much so choosing to be homless in Hawaii spacificly. It's well... I DON'T WANT to live outside. But of course if I have too unfortunately I sure as hell DON'T want to do so in the winter. I nearly 6 months of my life living on the streets in Hawaii. December 2013-May 2014. I made $208/ week in unemployment. So I got $416 every other Wednesday. I got to Hawaii over an issue of $17. Flight prices change faster then people change thier kids diapers. I was sleeping outside in Los Angeles remember December.. A bit if a ( cold snap) down in the 30s at night. It was $279 to ride the bus back to Florida. I was $262 to fly out to Hawaii. So I left because I got a job in Alaska for the season. I then have been well established in Texas then Back in Florida.. Well because of covid 19 I'm not doing seasonal work 2020 in Alaska again. I have enough established in Florida I don't have to return to Hawaii. If I did NOT have it established I MIGHT return. Long gone are the days you can show up someplace and ( I'll put in 25 applications and have a job by the end of next week) If so that's more less dumb luck anywhere. Last time you could was the 90s. Which I was a kid so I wasn't old enough to have a job in the 90s. But that's what I overheard from my parents and other adults back then. So it's NOT that living outside is glitter and gold BUT you can tolerate it more so then most other places. ALSO to mention. In Honolulu ( and I was informed Maui as well) they have 24 hour fitness. So I bought a membership before i even left California. $40/ month. Go shower/ shave plug in the phone. Under the line of thinking ( well if I at least look presentable) somebody will hire me. I had some odd jobs for cash but unfortunately no documented lagitimate gainful employment. I looked presentable ✔ kept the phone bill paid ✔. $208/ week that can be done. If I had gotten an actual gainful source of employment I might still be Thier to this very day. Even now in 2020. We have 3 or 4 guys up here in Alaska who are working with us from Hawaii. They are contomplating 1) do I return or 2) do I need for the mainland afterwards? So sorry to be long winded. But that's my philosophy. Most DON'T want to be homeless but it's the easiest to tolerate in comparison
The solution is to use a large size of land and allow the homeless to live there with their tents. Provide sanitation to them. Hawaii is ideal for homeless people because the temperature is nice and they have access to the beach to swim. Wealthy people are the problem because they discriminate against those who do not have money. The same should happen in Byron Bay, Australia and all other beautiful locations where the rich believe they have the right to not have to share the land.
The $150,000.00 that tax payers are paying for sending the people back to their homes shluld be charged to that shor guy ambercrombie and all the idiots that allowed the mainland to send their homeless to our islands. When they cant even care for our own ohana on our islands.

The weather and the people are relaxed here. I keep hearing job training and education. Don't think most of our homeless looking for jobs or school. We have a few shelters on the island and I don't think it's full except for IHS maybe. Because they don't have any mandatory training or job search. I could be wrong. I'm hoping that things have change and I'm totally wrong. Am I wrong? Please educate me on the needs.
i can't speak for every location, but in my most recent experience you're right. while its good to have the option there. many don't realize that it seems a majority of homeless want to be homeless. they don't want to have to work, pay bills, responsibility of things, they don't even want to be in shelters sometimes because they have curfews. you can't do much to help someone like that. yes addiction and mental illness plays a huge part; but also you can't help an addict if they don't want to get better or force someone into mental health treatment. the folks who are down on their luck and need a temporary hand should be given the extra resources to do so.

We are up 100 feet from the water and it is AMAZING! 8yr old house and the area is so gorgeous! We are fortunate and lucky to live here, but we have earned it and we fit in. You may not fit in so SERIOUSLY consider your move. No joke. Serious. But......unless you're a star or got a PhD or lotsa money, honey.....Please SERIOUSLY consider the move here. Do not compromise and think you can support a family on a retail job. Jobs are SCARCE and if you do not have one......gooooood luck. Unless you have something waiting for you here.....PLEASE.....KNOW THAT YOU MAY HATE IT WITHIN 3 MONTHS. Many come and go - with their families in-tow. I am not a nay-sayer.....I am the guy who hopefully makes you THINK HARD. Just because it works for us and we can afford to live here comfortably does not mean all can. Many come here with lots of money, but they do not assimilate. You will not be well-known here. You will become known-well. Huge difference and the mainland ways are NOT seen as good or PONO (righteous).

Here's what we DON'T realise. Only 15% of the homless population comes from the mainland 48. About 1/2 the people are long time Hawaii residence. They've been around most if not thier whole lives. 35% have come from Alaska.
Been to Hawaii twice and loved it both times. Yes, expensive as hell for everything. But if I were on the verge of being homeless and could scrape up enough money, that is the place I would go.
The agencies that are involved in transportation, homelessness, & housing should get with state legislators to meet with any & all carriers currently flying to & from the mainland in Hawaii & lessen some tax liabilities or fees the state may levy (airport use, aviation fuel tax, business licenses, etc.) for waived ONCE EVER one way fare & luggage fees from all Hawaii Airports to destinations chosen, after the social services confirmed secured housing, so Hawaii doesn't add to the homelessness problem elsewhere, or just displacing American homeless, by having a proactive approach. Records should be kept to prevent the same person returning for free airfare & rendering such a program completely ineffective.
This video aged poorly. I came to Hawaii to start a new life and ended up homeless because of the lack of opportunities (most jobs are tourist catering or paid under the table) and high cost of living. I noticed that more natives were homeless in Hawaii than foreigners. Witnessing the Lahaina fires was devastating. The state has enough money to truly solve homelessness and provide jobs for the locals they just don't. That's why many of us just left, natives and foreigners. Shit-show island.

We told you so long ago - they are coming to the islands one way trips without a place to live, money or a plan and end up on the streets. My sister and I were raised wealthy. We had everything we needed or wanted growing up. I went to college and my sister decided to live a life of drugs and using others. She’s now living in a homeless tent city in Hawaii. She’s so far gone I don’t recognize her personality or voice.
It’s sad. But she won’t accept treatment.. only money and things she chooses.

It's not the whole truth.) I'm sorry for your heartbreak. My love died a year ago on the streets of Long Beach. I wasn't in touch with him for 7 years. I was so broken hearted and angry that he wouldn't/couldn't stop using. I was and still am FURIOUS with a system that incarcerates the mentally ill and homeless and substance abusers, then offers them NOTHING in care. NOTHING. We wrote a couple of hundred letters to each other the last 3 years of his life. I still loved him, slways will. I wish I would have stayed in contact with him before that. If love could fix addiction, millions would still be with us. Again, I'm sorry about your sister.
I have a daughter in the same boat. I think it is mental illness. Our system is set up so the mentally Ill person has to choose to get help. If they were that rational, they wouldn't be mentally I'll.
And, I'm wrong. It isn't wholly up to them to make their own decisions when they are mentally ill and brain damaged from injury and substance mis-use. I wish I could go back and I would have never abandoned him. He would always have gotten a loving word and any kind of helo I could offer whether he was using or not. Al-anon is bullshit. You have to protect yourself from the pain of the addict you love over and over and over again. But abandonment? No contact? I would never go that route again. It's broken me.

HOWEVER many people can't afford Chicago or whatever cold city they're in. They are homless or on the verge of being so allredy. Maybe as example ( they live in a car) it's probably a 1995 and still running okay so it's in good shape for being as old as it is. Have no job or a part time job 3 days week. Well if you in such a situation find somebody to give you $2,000 for that car and it's let's say November.. Well you might head out to Hawaii sleep outside in Chicago? Or in Honolulu? That's a no brainer

For one year I live in a 16 year old Chrysler PT cruiser in Denver Colorado (a cold winter city) it can be done. I like the idea of selling the car and live in Hawaii sleep on a park bench or beach without a job or responsibilities.

All national providers AT&T Sprit Verizon they work Thier. Just maybe you'll get a job. Perhaps a part time job but a little money. As mention I got unemployment. Looking back a couple guys had part time work.. 1 gut worked at a car wash 3 or 4 afternoons for $10/ hour. So he got around $200/ week. Enough to pay his phone bill ride the bus also shower at 24 hour fitness but obviously not money contruant to what is needed to get a place to live. Beets being outside in Colorado in winter. I can't remember is Planet Fitness is out in Hawaii or not. 24 hour fitness and I think Cross Fit is also. But you don't have to go just to shower and plug in the phone. Also in Honolulu you DON'T need a car. The bus is actually better then New York. All of then run up until midnight and some routs do operate 24 hours. So you'll be okay without that car. No special name for it.. Not Honolulu Transit or anything they simply call it ( The Bus) so do what you do

I say only L.A. homeless RESIDENTS, especially those who have worked in and contributed to it, get services first before any non-L.A. homeless get services.

While I can understand the frustration at the idea of one area sending homeless people to Hawaii if they don't have a support system like family, friends, etc here but I highly doubt they're just randomly offering people one way flights. Years ago before I moved back to Hawaii I worked in homeless veteran outreach in Austin Tx. There were programs that would buy people tickets *only* if they had someone on the other end that would say they had somewhere to go for at least 3 months. Obviously this can be abused by someone giving the counsler a number of a friend who will say whatever they need to say to get the ticket but there isn't an easy way to verify if the other person is actually in Hawaii.
In general I see most of this as a lot like only treating a nose bleed when it is a brain tumor that is causing the nose bleed. If you chart housing costs against wages and adjust for inflation it is obvious that this problem has been steadily getting worse for years. There is a strong correlation between that trend and the trend of increasing homelessness. I don't really have an easy one size fits all solution to this problem but I can say that what we're currently doing is only kicking the can down the road so someone else somewhere else has to deal with it later.

3 basic needs of people: Food. Clothing. Shelter. All 3 found on Hawaii. Yet bear in mind these islands are isolated far from other mainlands so what they provide in the way of these necessities are limited and EXPENSIVE. Homeless is homeless no matter where one goes. So it wise and the course of good judgement in doing their research, even visiting the islands 1st so they can experience the REALITY of what it is to live homeless on these islands before making such a decision. You could very well spare yourself much frustration amd sadness.

i think the main motivation to poeple wanting to live in hawaii despite being in poverty is the year round warm weather. im also guessing poeple go to great lengths just to get out there which makes me think its something of a last resort for them.

Was at IHS , but I went to Ft Tripler for a impatient program and left the program early due to some issues... Almost got stuck... Was over in Barbers point also

I am a person who recently moved here back in 2013 from the mainland. I have been a working homeless person here since then by choice. I have also been homeless off and on over the years in several states. Each time I was employed full time.

For the last two years I lived in two different boarding house there in Honolulu. I paid between $525 & $535 for one room , utilities included. I found that to be reasonable.
There are low rent places for single men there. Single men make up the majority of the homeless. The problem that I ran into there was that there wasn’t a lot of boarding house which makes it hard for minimum wage men to find housing. There also was no boarding houses that were managed or subsidized by the state. The state kicks single men to the curb when it comes to housing.
@@myperspective5091 you know many large cities that's become the case. In Miami I paid $100/ week. So $400/ month ( well 28 days) HOWEVER point being 95% + of such arrangements are for males. Granted of course NOT as many single women would be in such need but their are enough around that we do need a more such options for the ladies then what few exist. As we know you DON'T have to be all brotherly loving community but we're grown men not little boys. So just behave yourself and be respectful of your fellow man and thoes situation work out okay. So $525/ month is cheap by Honolulu standards. I guess the hope like in other such places that keep working for 6 months or so hopefully you'll be able to get you're own place or at least a privet room down the line.

Hawaii's resources are very limited compared to the mainland though, its putting unnecessary strain on the system to help people who are not state residences. if they're natives or from Hawaii then its a different story and of course the recourses need to be put to them, but they're talking about those who fly in just for the beach homeless lifestyle from the mainland (which sadly is a thing)
My friend use to work at a shelter intake place here and She said I wouldnt believe how many ppl come here within 2 weeks to a month head to the shelter to see if they can get a spot or even Demand a spot. Not uneducated, Not super poor, had a not bad life in the mainland said they just wanted to be here in hawaii. Made me sick. I told her I couldnt do her job 🤣. She said they usually get denied cause obviously they dont really need help like others do but they still try and Argue to the core.
A long time ago, I voted for Rep Mizuno because of an issue that was important to me at the time, although I definitely did not agree with some of the other stuff he supports and sponsors. But I actually got to know him some years later. I can say that one thing is for sure: John Mizuno cares very deeply about Oahu and the people he represents. He is trying to make this island a better place.

I came to Hawaii in 1968 to go to UH for summer school. I took all my savings and worked also. We knew we had to work to be able to live there. We also had the upmost respect for the beautiful people of Hawaii. It was the experience of a lifetime and I still live by the values I learned of Aloha. Some times they are as low as $250 from the west Coast. Homless people who have a little bit of money like from work for a cash a part time job or unemployment can manage to scrape together $250. I lived outside in Honolulu from December 2013/May 2014. I received $208 week in unemployment agree my job got shut down to road construction. So every other Wednesday I received $416 on my card. Found a fight for $239+ taxes and baggage fees $262. Couldn't find a lagitimate job in Hawaii. May 2014 I ended up working in Alaska. Been working in Montana Texas and Florida all this time up until this year. I went back to Alaska 2020 summer season due to covid 19. I'm doing better then I was 7 years ago. I'm pretty well established in Florida these days. Honestly if I wasn't established I just might become a Hawaii Alaska Seasonal hopper. Well looks like I may be a Florida Alaska Seasonal hopper again in 2021

I definitely would only visit Hawaii and plan on a return to the Mainland if not extraordinarily wealthy and contributing to Native Hawai’ian stability (worked in a Kaiser Permanente Texas call center handling retiree cases in the region, already have, but would want to think bigger). I might move to Mazatlan with less money for a temperate climate. It’s nice.

This report is over 3 years old, going on 4. So how did that work out ? Here on the mainland, Nevada got in trouble for putting people on buses to get them out of the State. I'm not sure how many had mental disabilities, only remember reading about it. I live in Az.
Yup. It was a behavioral health facility in Las Vegas. They loaded mental health patients up with drugs and stuck them on busses to California. They called it "Greyhound therapy". Typical Las Vegas actually; mostly soulless, skill less, entitled morons live in/run Las Vegas.

Hawaii has a plan to send all the mainland homeless people back to the mainland. Unfortunately, this will not work because I am working on a plan to move all of the homeless people in my town to Hawaii.

The main problem that these politicians seem to be missing is that, most people are homeless because they don't have family or friends that can or, will help them. Many people are homeless partly because their families have turned their backs on them and there is nothing these politicians can do to change that. What it really will amount to is, is a clandestine method to quietly railroad "down and outers" out of town.
... and make these "down and outers" return to their own states to pay for and provide the services that they need. As in California, we don't want out-of-state homeless coming to CA and further overload our homeless assistance programs and resources and deny homeless CA residents the assistance that they need. It's amazing that homeless people from other states come to CA to live as homeless people and perhaps worse yet to expect CA to provide them free housing when they've contributed nothing to this state.
Actually, most of the homeless in California are from California. There are a lot that aren't but Americans are free to live in which ever American state they choose. You allow illegals to travel to whichever state they choose. Why not Americans. You make it a crime to be "down and out." A lot of successful people have been "down and out" at one time or other. We should all be as fortunate as some working class heroes. As for services, the homeless rarely get services that they need. You have old run down studios going for $1800-$2000 a month. $8.50 ain’t going cut it. I was born and raised in O’ahu I left in 96 cause cost of living was just getting ridiculous. I had a good paying job but rent was ridiculous high and still found myself living paycheck to paycheck.
And insread of making laws for things like living wages they make laws to make being homeless even harder like sit,lie ordinances.

Well it's NOT so much so choosing to be homless in Hawaii spacificly. It's well... I DON'T WANT to live outside. But of course if I have too unfortunately I sure as hell DON'T want to do so in the winter. I nearly 6 months of my life living on the streets in Hawaii. December 2013-May 2014. I made $208/ week in unemployment. So I got $416 every other Wednesday. I got to Hawaii over an issue of $17. Flight prices change faster then people change thier kids diapers. I was sleeping outside in Los Angeles remember December.. A bit if a ( cold snap) down in the 30s at night. It was $279 to ride the bus back to Florida. I was $262 to fly out to Hawaii. So I left because I got a job in Alaska for the season. I then have been well established in Texas then Back in Florida.. Well because of covid 19 I'm not doing seasonal work 2020 in Alaska again. I have enough established in Florida I don't have to return to Hawaii. If I did NOT have it established I MIGHT return. Long gone are the days you can show up someplace and ( I'll put in 25 applications and have a job by the end of next week) If so that's more less dumb luck anywhere. Last time you could was the 90s. Which I was a kid so I wasn't old enough to have a job in the 90s. But that's what I overheard from my parents and other adults back then. So it's NOT that living outside is glitter and gold BUT you can tolerate it more so then most other places. ALSO to mention. In Honolulu ( and I was informed Maui as well) they have 24 hour fitness. So I bought a membership before i even left California. $40/ month. Go shower/ shave plug in the phone. Under the line of thinking ( well if I at least look presentable) somebody will hire me. I had some odd jobs for cash but unfortunately no documented lagitimate gainful employment. I looked presentable ✔ kept the phone bill paid ✔. $208/ week that can be done. If I had gotten an actual gainful source of employment I might still be Thier to this very day. Even now in 2020. We have 3 or 4 guys up here in Alaska who are working with us from Hawaii. They are contomplating 1) do I return or 2) do I need for the mainland afterwards? So sorry to be long winded. But that's my philosophy. Most DON'T want to be homeless but it's the easiest to tolerate in comparison
The solution is to use a large size of land and allow the homeless to live there with their tents. Provide sanitation to them. Hawaii is ideal for homeless people because the temperature is nice and they have access to the beach to swim. Wealthy people are the problem because they discriminate against those who do not have money. The same should happen in Byron Bay, Australia and all other beautiful locations where the rich believe they have the right to not have to share the land.
I wish it were like customs. If you don't have a return ticket and verified residence, you're going right back.

The weather and the people are relaxed here. I keep hearing job training and education. Don't think most of our homeless looking for jobs or school. We have a few shelters on the island and I don't think it's full except for IHS maybe. Because they don't have any mandatory training or job search. I could be wrong. I'm hoping that things have change and I'm totally wrong. Am I wrong? Please educate me on the needs.
i can't speak for every location, but in my most recent experience you're right. while its good to have the option there. many don't realize that it seems a majority of homeless want to be homeless. they don't want to have to work, pay bills, responsibility of things, they don't even want to be in shelters sometimes because they have curfews. you can't do much to help someone like that. yes addiction and mental illness plays a huge part; but also you can't help an addict if they don't want to get better or force someone into mental health treatment. the folks who are down on their luck and need a temporary hand should be given the extra resources to do so.

Been here a couple of years. We recently bought a lovely home overlooking Hilo Bay and Hilo. We are up 100 feet from the water and it is AMAZING! 8yr old house and the area is so gorgeous! We are fortunate and lucky to live here, but we have earned it and we fit in. You may not fit in so SERIOUSLY consider your move. No joke. Serious.

Here's what we DON'T realise. Only 15% of the homless population comes from the mainland 48. About 1/2 the people are long time Hawaii residence. They've been around most if not thier whole lives. 35% have come from Alaska.

The agencies that are involved in transportation, homelessness, & housing should get with state legislators to meet with any & all carriers currently flying to & from the mainland in Hawaii & lessen some tax liabilities or fees the state may levy (airport use, aviation fuel tax, business licenses, etc.) for waived ONCE EVER one way fare & luggage fees from all Hawaii Airports to destinations chosen, after the social services confirmed secured housing, so Hawaii doesn't add to the homelessness problem elsewhere, or just displacing American homeless, by having a proactive approach. Records should be kept to prevent the same person returning for free airfare & rendering such a program completely ineffective.
This video aged poorly. I came to Hawaii to start a new life and ended up homeless because of the lack of opportunities (most jobs are tourist catering or paid under the table) and high cost of living. I noticed that more natives were homeless in Hawaii than foreigners. Witnessing the Lahaina fires was devastating. The state has enough money to truly solve homelessness and provide jobs for the locals they just don't. That's why many of us just left, natives and foreigners. Shit-show island.

We told you so long ago - they are coming to the islands one way trips without a place to live, money or a plan and end up on the streets.
