I’m an honorably discharged veteran with _TWO_ bachelor’s degrees, and I’m currently living in my car because I can’t afford rent. Seriously. I’m currently trying to move to a new state, but moving is expensive these days, and a hassle. So just trying to save up money as fast as possible. I tried to get a HUD-VASH voucher (essentially subsidizes a veteran’s rent) but there’s a waiting list. Even veterans who don’t do drugs and work/pay taxes get screwed in this country. 😅

“The Country” ( I am assuming you are referring to the United States) needs to stop Illegally Occupying Hawaii. That is why Hawaii (mostly Oahu and Maui) is corrupt, polluted and over priced. I was born and raised in Honolulu and NONE of those buildings existed accept the Moana Hotel and The Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Waikiki was all local homes until the early 60’s when the colonist started building all those high rises.

I used to be homeless and i don't think it should be a crime to sleep on public land. But when i was homeless i didn't have a tent. I found shelter whenever needed and had only what i could carry with me in one go when traveling around. If i couldn't fit it in my backpacks then i didn't keep it. To think all the money given to Ukraine could have been used to build housing for every homeless person in America. Face it people, if government wanted to fix the homeless problems they would. I have lived here for 60 years...they just approved building over 350 condos on Turtle Bay. The investors are out of State. Hawaii residents will have to foot the bill for roads, water, etc. The investors will make millions while our ocean water get polluted. They need to charge all out of State investors a fee to build public housing. Every time someone wants to develop unaffordable housing units for the rich, they need to build public housing for our people who can't afford to house themselves. It doesn't have to be super nice, building with restrooms and laundry and enough to survive. If they want to move out after getting on their feet that's better. Thanks for this videa... it's real.

No not all homelessness is due to drugs, but majority is and if you go and talk to the homeless people like he did, you can clearly see that meth is the cause. Are there other drugs? Sure but very rare. Meth is everywhere in Hawaii and it does destroy lives. Add that to milk being $9-11 a gallon and rent being $1,800 for a studio apartment with jobs only paying $18hr. I am from a state that has the most rehabs in the country, Hawaii doesn't have that in comparison.

I arrived in Hawaii over a week ago for a 10 day holiday from Australia and am staying in Waikiki. I am amazed at the amount of homelessness around this area. I took a bus ride to visit the Arizona memorial, and it seemed to get worse the further I went.
I felt guilty being in a hotel when people are sleeping in parks and bus stops.
I met a lovely, very well-educated man and wondered what I could do to help. I started taking the share of the food that I would have eaten from the buffet each morning, along with coffee, butter, bread, and honey/jam to him each morning. I made sure I would only take the amount I would have had eaten as I didn't want to get in trouble. I asked if it was enough, and he replied, more than enough, as I share it with the others.
So here is a man who is starving on the streets but still shares.
The way I have seen some of the locals and people from the mainland look at the homeless is terrible.
Something needs to be done. I am sad because I can only help with food one more day before I return to Australia.

I moved to Hawaii in 1974 after my military service to the Big Island, Hilo to be specific. I never had a housing problem, as I worked for the State of Hawaii. There was no homelessness, as everyone had jobs. Then, all of a sudden, the drug "ice" made it's debut in the Islands (about 1984) and everything changed. I interviewed for a position at ARCO corporation in LA, and was hired for immediate hire, & left Hawaii in 1986 (after Tina Turner's last U.S. show). THERE WAS NO HOMELESS ISSUES THEN.

    Aloha, Nick Johnson 🤙🏽
My comment to you is of pure FRUSTRATION 😡
I'm born and raised on 'Oahu. I personally have been houseless (Hawai'i is my HOME) twice. Once, in the early '90's by myself and in the early 2000's with my son in a shelter (because I didn't want him to know the streets). Back in those days, the homeless problem wasn't as bad as it is NOW. Which is why I could go into a shelter.
I've seen & been on BOTH sides. There are different sides to homelessness.
    1) Career homeless-they're the ones who REFUSE to be in society & are CONTENT to stay like that.
    2) Mental issues-they're the ones who either had those issues with NO drug abuse and the ones who got there using & abusing, mostly drugs.
    3) Alcohol &/or Drug Abusers
    4) Families who are in the working class who can't afford to pay rent somewhere &/or can't qualify for places &/or are on LONG wait lists FOR a place.
    5) Elderly
    6) Veterans-between the last two, I'm sure that there are some of them that are just Elderly &/or Veterans 🤔there might even be some who are battling with mental &/or alcohol/drug abuse.
'Oahu DOES have, NOW a lot more homeless that HAVE BEEN coming there because wherever they're originally from IS giving them a one-way ticket to "paradise" INSTEAD of helping "their own".
There aren't ENOUGH places on the islands to help the homeless as a WHOLE. THAT requires $, that our State can only give out so much to the different non-profit organizations.
The "Aloha Spirit" has SERIOUSLY been abused. I believe that the Hawai'i airports should be like France where you ask them "business or pleasure", take down their credentials & "follow up" with them & if their job fell through and/or they're "stuck" they get a one-way ticket back where they came from to get the help they need from "over there."
When someone becomes homeless, there are "stages" for that. In the beginning, a person who isn't using & abusing... they're all "gung-ho" about NOT staying on the streets that they'll try EVERYTHING to get back to THEIR normal. When THAT "wears off" frustration &/or depression sinks in & they start to "give up" that's where alcohol & drug abuse can & might happen. There are just SO much different things/situations of even WHY people become homeless...but, at the end of the day... they're ALL STILL human beings and you sir, need to be MORE RESPECTFUL when you're filming the homeless while they're in their tents/homes like asking PERMISSION to film them &/or flying your drone 🤔🤨 (I get it, you want to show the public the REAL stuff but, it's just disrespectful when you're PEERING into their personal space like that 😮😡
The one in Waianae is called (I'm going to phonetically say it)
    Poo-oo Hoh-noo-ah Oh Why-ah-neye.
    Aloha 🌺

It'll all gonna come crashing down and we're going to go back to small villages, people fending for themselves, developing their own little communities like it was before all the high-rises, etc. Nature is gonna is start taking the land back, politics and all this crap is going to be insignificant because life will return to pure survival. I honestly think it's a beautiful thing, as long as all the synthetic drugs and cartels and all that are no longer able to have influence.

The homeless can`t live or fend for themselves otherwise they would be doing it.The pioneer life is hard work and most homeless are soft. Half of them want to escape reality with drugs and alcohol and laying on their backs. They never grew up to take responsibility for their lives, that is fending for yourself. They burnt bridges with their families and the friends they chose dragged them down.

Why? We the taxpayers are the ones providing the revenue, why aren't we being taken care of first in a 'crisis' that is devastating our own country. We are providing the equivalent of $100,000 for every illegal migrant flooding across our southern border; free cell phones, free hotel accommodations, free transportation, We live in an upper mid-class town. We have noticed an influx of illegal immigrants in our school district. Lunches are free due to the percentage of low income households now in our district. There's no such thing as a free lunch, who is paying for it? The homeowner taxpayers are. The illegals aren't paying these taxes. It goes way beyond the free lunches, they are getting a free education, increasing classroom sizes, creating demand for more teachers, resources, etc. This all is costing the taxpayer more.

@@Sammy-il1qf. Complete political rhetoric not based in reality. Coming from the same type of people who don't want to pay for healthcare, education, affordable housing, social services etc... the same group that always wants to cut taxes on corporations and the rich, suddenly care about the working class Americans lol. If you want things to "improve" then you need to support programs that actually help working class Americans, but most of you don't. Most of you support politicians who want to cut spending on every program that can make Americans lives better. We spend on average 100 billion on illegal immigration, most of that goes to border security, not for "free shit". Most of these "hotels" are being funded by state governments, not the federal government. And it's a small fraction of immigrants who get that. Most end up working agricultural labor and industrial labor jobs for low pay, which most americans hate doing because of the low pay, long hours, and hard labor. Most illegal immigrants are not getting free housing, cell phones, etc. Lol, thats such a played out partisan talking point not based in reality. We spend trillions on programs for American citizens, and it could and should be even more, and most American social programs should be completely changed because it ends up costing even more because we involve corporations and the free market, instead of letting the governemnt do it. We spend more on healthcare, education, infrastructure, social services than almost any other country which does these things infinitely better because we have allowed corporate america to provide services the gov should be providing. Allowing corporations to provide these services have caused prices to skyrocket, which in turn forces the Fed to print money which causes more inflation... And Americans continue to support politicians both republican and Democrat who mindlessly support the status quo, while things get harder for most Americans. Meanwhile Europeans have lower inflation, lower overall costs, free healthcare, free daycare and higher education, better infastrucuture, higher quality of life etc... and the funny part is they pay much less overall for these things, and their overall tax burden is similar to the US. But we call them "socialists" and desperately try and do the exact opposite of a tried and true working blue print. But ya illegal immigrants are the big problem, let's focus on that instead of the multiple elephants in the room.

Dog the Bounty Hunter had a few of those homeless camps on his show when he was looking for fugitives and some of them were pretty elaborate. Beth helped a few of them. One woman had kids. She said you have to get these kids out of here. The woman worked 2 part time jobs and couldn't afford rent. Beth helped her get a 1 bedroom apartment it was around $1,000 15 years ago. The woman said with foodstamps and welfare and her 2 jobs she could make the rent. Beth paid first month rent and deposit plus gave her money to get beds or something to sit on. She got a bunk bed and a blow up bed, a couch and table and chairs and someone gave her a TV. Beth was kind hearted and willing to help people. They helped a lot of people go to rehab and get off ice Hawaii's version of meth. One of my friends lived in Hawaii for 6 months so she could help her uncle recover from surgery. He was buying the house and it took the uncle, 2 of his kids and a family friend living there just to make the house payments and utilities. They worked full time and 2 of them worked a 2nd job. The uncle got social security disability.

It saddens my heart to see stuff like this on social media bcoz this makes the homeless situation we deal with here in Hawai'i much more real. In reality our people (the locals) out there isn't homeless. They are houseless. Hawai'i Is Our home. It's the cost of living here that is forcing our ppl to leave their homes and go houseless. Our ppl are even being forced to leave the island and move somewhere else. As for the other homeless's they are being sent here by the state that they were from and for them this is sad. They are told Hawai'i is warmer unlike the burning cold cities they will leave behind. So the homeless gladly accept the free trip to paradise only to find that living in paradise isn't all what they thougt. And once they get here they are stuck. This is when drugs, alchohol and crime becomes their only means of survival. So yes you see many ppl with mental health issues (ppl from all walks of life who once upon a time had a life) out on the streets and even on our beautiful beaches. If you all wanna help ppl like this raise awareness of the truth behind what these ppl are going through. Not jst in Hawai'i but around the United States.
