Eye of the coach #92 : Now Sinner has the tough task of staying No 1

  • It’s one thing to get to No 1. It’s another thing to stay there.
Both, of course, are extremely difficult. However, the saying goes in tennis that it’s even more difficult to stay in the top spot of the rankings than it is to get there in the first place - and Patrick Mouratoglou does not disagree.
Mouratoglou explained the new challenge that awaits Jannik Sinner, who clinched the No 1 ranking on the ATP Tour for the first time during the 2024 Roland-Garros tournament.
“Of course it’s extremely difficult to reach the top” Mouratoglou commented, “but it is more difficult to stay at the top. You don’t have the right to fail anymore. You’re supposed to win all time. The pressure is unbelievable.”
The coach went on to say that the pressure on Sinner will especially show up in matches when he is a heavy favorite against a considerably lower-ranked opponent. There won’t be as much pressure on him against an opponent like Carlos Alcaraz, who is close to the same ranking and level.
“When you’re No 1 you don’t want to lose to a guy who is No 10, No 15 in the world. But those guys…some of them are very dangerous, so they can beat him. And when he’s gonna play them, he’s gonna feel extra pressure because’s he really not supposed to lose against them.
“People will understand (if he loses to Alcaraz). It’s okay to lose against him…. But if he loses against a guy who is No 10, No 15 in the world, then people will start to say, ‘oh, wow, maybe he’s not gonna stay (No 1). That sort of pressure will be higher.”
    KEY MOMENTS
0.10 - Sinner reaching No 1 in the world isn’t a surprise; it was expected
0.31 - It’s more difficult to stay at the top because of the pressure to win every match
0.48 - It will be a challenge for Sinner to stay there, but he will likely deal well with the pressure
1.00 - There are two dangers for Sinner: 1) Alcaraz; 2) everyone other than Alcaraz
1.27 - Playing against lower-ranked opponents puts more pressure on the world No 1
1.46 - Losing to Alcaraz wouldn’t be as bad because Alcaraz is close in ranking and level
2.02 - If Sinner loses to a player outside the top 10, people will start having doubts

This is the coach that is working with Holger Rune..so far under his tutelage Rune has regressed and descended out of top 10 -- by results coaching has been unsuccessful in raising Rune level...there are going to many trying to pull Jannik Sinner down..we, his fans stand with him each step of the way in his glorious career! Congrats Jannik..you define what a champion means..

Rune's regression had already happened before Mouratoglou became his coach again, it's only now that the rankings have caught up which makes it seem it's because of Mouratoglou.

Being a champion doesn't mean staying in number 1, it's impressive enough to stay in the top 10 for a very long time, like Medvedev, Rublev, and Zverev these guys have been in the top 10 consistently. I think that matters more.

@@wingberry123 on point! I would go even further: Staying in the top 50 over a long period of time - perhaps even for your entire career - is an achievement that very few can accomplish. The so-called "experts" among the fans only ever count the No. 1. Rafa, Roger, Novak AND Philipp Kohlschreiber and Andreas Seppi were such players. Who would have thought of the latter two? Probably nobody.

Can’t take this coach (or I should call him Patrick like his name is) serious a coach of this magnitude (who has coached icons like Serena Williams) making predictions like Djokovic will win 2-3 Grand Slam titles this year after he lost at Australian Open.
Or even worse making predictions that Djokovic will win 30 Grand Slam titles?? Me who has watched tennis for over 30 years (but never even speaked with icons like Serena Williams) let alone coaching her know that Djokovic will never win 30 Grand Slam titles.
I mean Djokovic has already done a monstrous achievement to win 12 majors in his 30s. And this guy believed that Djokovic will win unbelievable 18??? Grand Slam titles in his 30s. So tell me how in hell should I take this guy seriously??? Of course I don’t.

When he was pointing Djokovic win 30 slams, he thought only about players like Rune and forgot Alcaraz and Sinner.

Sinner will win Wimbledon and USO this year without a doubt. He will most likely defend aus open 2025 as well. If he wins RG 2025, he will then become the youngest player to win all grand slams beating rafa's record

It's hard to see Sinner winning Wimbledon this year. Of course, much will depend on his draw. US Open he is a huge favorite.

@@broncoguy4862 how is it hard? If it takes carlos 5 sets to beat Sinner on carlos best surface, then current form Sinner will beat current form Carlos on grass in 4 sets. Sinner didn't train for 3 weeks prior to RG because of the flu and hip injury. So he wasnt in the best form for RG anyways
