  • Electrification is perfect for luxury vehicles. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV adds performance and exclusivity to the premium experience. Dual motor 4MATIC all-wheel drive provides the traction to handle up to 677 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. And if 3.4 second 0-60 sprints aren’t enough, the Hyperscreen dashboard impresses even standing still. Tom Voelk checks out a well-equipped model in Emerald Green Metallic and finds it’s a great way to move a family briskly... if you don’t need to go terribly far.

    Good video as always. Kudos.
And good point about the charging speed and people not to use the fast ones when their cars can't take advantage.
Back in time as a student I worked a summer job at a gas station. This particular was mainly targeting the big rigs, so it had Diesel pumps marked High-Speed and LKW (German/European short for those big rigs), but there were also regular pumps both Diesel and Gas.
Part of the job was to be ready with the emergency stop button in case someone in a normal car or truck attempted to use a high speed pump, as those thinking they would get a faster car instead got a diesel bath - only the big rigs tanks could take on ½ a gallon per second.

What was the "ground clearance" for this "SUV"? Curious....even though for most buyers that only matters as so far as how deep a snow covered road can you drive through in this SUV without possibly running into trouble. "Just in-case".
And while like you there are others who also prefer the "low to the ground SUV's (urban crawlers)"....others might fall into the other camp...."more ground clearnace"....
Odd companies keep putting out "sport SUV's" when clearly all SUV's have "areodynamics" working against them. The idea should be "utility". :)

I do not have the AMG version just the SUV and I am very happy with this car. Only one issue is that Mercedes Map probably use Waze and waze is sometimes purely stupid. For example instead of going straight it asks to take a right and then a u turn and then take a right turn. Sometimes is stead of taking the actual exit in the highways, it asks to take the opposite exit and drive another few miles in the opposite direction and take a u turn. It took me a while to figure out that the map provider is waze as both of them showing exactly same error at the same places. Second issue is Mercedes Me Connect and Electrify America which is a single reason I started hating taking this fantastic car to any long drive. This car is so comfortable that we never felt tired even after driving 8-9 hours in a day. But wasted so much time on the road because of stupid EA networks sucks. Probably will buy a Hybrid next time as charging is real nightmare in long drives and 4 hrs drive can be 8 hours drive.

I can tell you what's more frustrating as an EV owner than just "no spare tire" (16:12) and that's the knowledge of knowing that there isn't a single tire shop other than the BMW dealer that will have the tire you need to get you back on the road for at least 2 days. When you're sitting on the side of the freeway with a flat in a BMW i3 you had better be thinking about where and how long you can be without your car as you're waiting for a 155 width tire to materialize. Many EVs are coming from the factory with EV specific tires that are optimized for rolling resistance efficiency which are rarely tire shop stocked items.

Tom, thanks for charge etiquette. Mach-E and XC40 Recharge DO need the 350 kW station (500 amps output) to get 150 kW (150 kW stations typically have a 350 amp limit) since both cars can pull more than 400 amps. Please correct your video. Probably other BEVs have similar needs.

NEED? I'm comfortable with my statement. Yes, you can get a little bit quicker charge with the Ford and Volvo but that would deny vehicles able to truly take advantage of 240-350kW charge speeds like E-GPM cars, Porsche, some Ultium vehicles and Lucid. Agreed on the overstay charge. A local mall is draconian about that and it seems to work.

@@DrivenCarReviews thank you! I'm just wandering if the DC charging networks don't OVERcharge customers - in big part reducing the benefits of EVs over ICE cars.
And about $1000 saved in a year - the figure used by several EV manufacturers - could become almost zero.
My next point - in US, most of gas price is the oil price, in EU - government taxes.
So Americans may have more to lose - as in EU they can simply transfer taxation from motor fuel to electricity, at least, in fast charging networks.

I would like to present a different argument for EVs not being suitable for apartment dwellers. While homeowners can certainly plug these in at the end of a day, it’s not a requirement. Just treat it like a gas car. When it’s fully-charged from an EV station, just drive it for as long as you need until it’s time to charge it again. EVs don’t need to be at 100% every day. Drive it until it’s at 40%..or 20%, whatever your comfort level is. Then, when it’s time to charge, simply drive to an EV station.
Granted, you probably won’t see any apartment dwellers driving these things but still, EVs don’t need to be charged there.

Glad manufacturers are offering more cars like this, sad that more are not affordable. Still, I just can't excited about this particular car. Styling is dull, tech is overdone, price is too high, repairs and maintenance will likely be a nightmare. I know more than a few people that own M-Bs and they all complain about the high cost of keeping them on the road as well as the limited number of items covered under warranty. If the motor that powers the windshield wipers fails (after only 30k miles) they consider that a 'wear and tear' item. Cost to replace? Over $700. No Honda would ever do that to you. Probably doesn't matter, they'll sell fleets of their RVs regardless.

Anything less than 400 mile range is useless. Not everyone lives in an urban setting with chargers. Until recently, the county my mother in law lives in had exactly one public charger, then Tesla installed 6 or so at an interstate exchange miles from the nearest population center. If we visited from 180 mostly rural miles away ( over the river and through the woods so to speak) it would be almost impossible to make a quick there and back in a day with an ev. I’ve been saying for about 7 years once BMW and Mercedes start building EV’s they will crush Tesla, I was so wrong! Mercedes has a nice interior but the performance specs compare directly to the physically larger Long Range Model X, the Plaid is in a completely different league. Tesla acceleration times include roll out but they do easily match and regularly beat their acceleration times. The Tesla range is usually less than rated but not 150 miles less like the Mercedes rating. The Mercedes does win on the interior but it’s a lot more money to pay for an interior in a car that depreciates so quickly as seen with the EQS😢 I’ve been buying new Performance Teslas since 2016 and had high hopes for the EQE and EQS but after driving them it’s just doesn’t seem worth the extra money. I admit I haven’t driven the AMG version but I’d be willing to bet sales will show those spending the money will agree the price doesn’t match other EV performance options. One last point the EQE AMG is closer to the size of the Performance Model Y that has virtually identical 0-60 ratings and is less than half the price. The Y is very roomy has better range and is priced well as the sales show. The Mercedes sales training tells salesmen to emphasize the AMG is faster than a Tesla around a race track, people go 0-60 far more often than they take their SUV to the race track.

I would pick a Merc over a Tesla any day for driving, but road trip charging is Tesla’s ace up its sleeve, and that ace wins the road trip game.

Ok, ok - stop pasting Tesla promo materials here. Tesla offered Model S and X for years, yet, most of people with money considered them... not so great, ugly and not coming from a Big Brand.
And yes, they start to beat Tesla more and more. It's just the beginning.
