- Between Phos, Chris, and now Luz, I think I just really like characters that seem fun-loving and carefree on the outside but are really burdened by heavy amounts of insecurities and traumas... Huh.
This is an analysis I've wanted to do for a while, before The Owl House Season 2 even concluded. I'm glad I waited, though; I was able to get a whole lot more to work with and when trying to figure out what to say about Luz as a result. As time goes on, Luz as a character just becomes more and more important to me; she really is just one of the single best characters I've seen in a western animation, which I suppose goes without saying since this video exists. I guess I could have and maybe should have waited for Season 3 to come out in full before writing this... But I waited long enough, I gotta get my word on the mama that wasn't ready for trauma out there.
Spoiler Warning for:
The Owl House (Up to Season 2)
Music: Gymnopédie No.1 by Erik Satie
(I know I've been doing music actually from the series discussed a few videos in a row but I couldn't figure out how to get The Owl House music to go with the video, so I just went with one of my favorites that generally fits most moods)

Luz Noceda is favorite character alongside Eda. She’s very relatable for me because I have autism and my special interest is movies, cartoons, fantasy and science fiction. I hope Luz will stay in the boiling isles with Eda, King , Amity and all of her friends after the final battle against Belos and The Collector. Luz is going to need all a lot of love and comfort from her friends and family
My dude me too
What’s funny is that Luz did kind of grow as Camila hoped, she just needed to be in a setting she felt comfortable in and with friends she felt she could open up to.
Luzs journey is so heartbreaking yet so beautiful with what happens at the end of Watching and Dreaming. Definitely my favourite protagonist ever
You missed a key relationship that defines Luz's character growth and her goal to become a fully fledged witch: her palisman. Palismen are magical creatures carved by witches from palistrom wood, a type of wood that grows directly from the bones of the titan. They sit on top of a witch's staff and the acquisition of a palisman is the final test a witch undergoes before they can be considered a full witch. In season 2 episode 6 Hunting Palisman, Principal Bump reveals that palistrom wood was grown so rare it's no longer possible for every witch to carve their own palisman so instead they are going to have a palisman adoption day with the Bat Queen. Each Hexside student takes turns bonding with a palisman by stating what their deepest lifelong goal is. Luz immediately runs into a problem when she states that her goal is to become a witch and none of the palismen react to it.
So far in the show Luz has had two goals: learn magic and return home. But it's already established that these goals are mutually exclusive, Luz can't be a witch on Earth because her magic only works in the Boiling Isles. Her inability to properly understand her own desires prevents her from bonding with a palisman, which effectively prevents her from becoming a witch. At the end of the episode Luz accepts that she can wait a bit longer while she figures herself out only to learn that Eda and King have a gift: a piece of pailstrom wood they stole for her. The wood basically then gets put on the back burner until season 2 episode 19 O Titan Where Art Thou where Eda offers one final lesson for Luz: how to carve a Palisman. The next episode reveals that Luz carved her palisman as an egg. The stated reason is she got the opportunity to decide what kind of witch she wants to be so she wants to give her palisman the same opportunity, as an egg it can be whatever it wants to be when they're ready. But reading between the lines its obvious that this is a delaying tactic, Luz hasn't resolved the inner turmoil in her heart and this is at its most obvious the way she beats herself up for all of her perceived failures.
Now we dive into season 3. Luz and her friends have spent months on Earth trying to return to the Boiling Isles and Luz's palisman has not hatched. Luz's mental state continues to deteriorate, she mostly has a dull, heavy-lidded expression on her face and happiness is a brief fleeting thing she only experiences when doing stuff with her friends. She's not the bright eternal optimist she once was. One freak out in class even hints that she might be suffering from suicidal ideation, feeling like everyone would be better off if she was dead. Luz updates her video diary and says that she's decided it's better for everyone if she stays away from them for good, once they find a way back to the Boiling Isles she's not coming along.
However Luz's mother Camila sees that video diary and knows she's making a mistake she's going to regret. From Camila's perspective Luz is doing better than she ever has before in her life. In the first episode Camila asks Luz if she had any friends? At the end of season 2 Luz shows back up on Camila's doorstep not just with friends, but a girlfriend. And those friends mean the world to Luz, she values their happiness over her own life. So at the end of the first special when the characters have found a way back to the Isles and Luz is about to confess about her decision Camila steps in and says that actually she and Luz are going to the Boiling Isles.
In the next episode Luz and Camila get a breather to talk during a fight with Kikimora. Luz is continuing to beat herself up over how things have turned out. So Camila tells Luz that she knows what that's like, that she knows exactly what it means to be a screw up like when she scheduled a root canal two days before her wedding, or when she swore at Luz's principal in a fit of road rage. But she also reveals to Luz that she's also a secret nerd who has been into a sci-fi parody of Star Trek called Cosmic Frontier. This connection with her mother allows Luz to realize what she actually wants in her heart: to be understood.
In that moment, the egg finally hatches.
Stringbean hatched in S3, which was clearly after this video was made (the author refers to an upcoming S3). Tough to evaluate something that hadn’t been completed yet.
I really, really hope that in Season 3, Luz would get a really good hug.
Also, thank you so much for making a Luz Noceda Analysis video. I really wanted more of these.
holy shit how do you only have 182 subscribers that was one of the most detailed things I've ever heard
You made this comment while I was in a funk, and it definitely helped raise my mood and put a smile on my face. Thank you so much for the kind words!
Phillip is Luz's mirror; they both came to the Boiling Isles to live out their fantasies but while Luz ultimately accepted that she needed to see the people of the boiling isles as....well people Phillip was determined to continue living out his fantasy and refused to grow up.
Luz is technically Marcy from Amphibia. Both had to learn that reality can never be a fantasy the hard way.
That was awesome to listen to! And I personally like this format without the visuals because I can focus more on what your saying & get my mindless minecraft tasks done. And I can't wait for the last episode! I'm so excited to see how Luz and King solve the Collector problem, and I can't help but wonder if the collector will somehow help Luz realize more about her grief and self loathing. Thanks for making the video!
You should definitely do an updated video now that season 3's first episode is out or at least a part 2 to go along with this one especially given how much more lore we get in the episode just on Luz. Also a short video Camila would also be quite interesting given the new information about her provided in Thanks to them.
With regards to the Camila comment: I do like Camila a lot but between several other characters I'd like to talk about, both from and outside of TOH, I can't guarantee that a video on her will be made any time soon, sadly. To the first idea: I'm far from opposed to making an update / part 2 video for Luz, but on that note, I might prefer to wait until all of Season 3 is out, even though Thanks to Them did give Luz even more to work with.
@@AceofDiamonds236 that's very understandable and besides u did say u have other videos lined up to be made plus the other 2 episodes my give even more to work with.
Great analysis!
I’m really enjoying your video! Though I think you could improve a bit more by breaking down your video into segmented parts in one video. Giving yourself some time to breathe, and adding some pauses can help give viewers time to reflect on what you have to say.
You can also improve by giving some visuals to go with the video. Instead of staying to the thumbnail of the video, you can add show clips, or use shots of what you’re talking about. This can help with retaining viewer interest. Also I would expand your border just a tad bit, I like the red border, as it caught my attention when looking for videos to watch.
Other than that, I look forward to seeing more from you in the future! I really love how you were able to go deep into detail without dragging any part out too long. It felt nice, consistent, and direct.
if you look into production code some episode usually follow a number101,102,103,= 1-2-3 owl house episode number after 107>7 episode then it jump up 115>8, 108>10 now after 109>9 then 111>11 as normal but 110>12 place but 113> 13 place 112 >14 place. funny 114>15 placement huh? 116>16 normal but 118 >17 slot. 119 >18 120>19 See something missing short on time what happen to production code 117
From my observation, Luz Nuceda has a messiah complex, where Luz believes she has to the saviour of others, and has a martyrdom behaviour, believing her self-sacrifice will save the day, and others from mistakes, or sins if you will. We get a glimpse of this in "Witches before Wizards", Luz believed she was destined for greatness, people with messiah complexes believe they have a destiny to do godly things, and the fact that Luz took her escapist fantasy and transformed it into gospel, reinforces her view that she has the right to intervene, divine intervention if you will. It's a form of narcissism, Luz thinks very highly of herself, aloof to her actions having consequences, so when she is at fault, puts on a glum look, thinking this what accountability looks like, this is still a defence mechanism for a narcissist, to draw sympathy and forgiveness in order to save face, instead of day camp, Luz should have been sent to a mental illness hospital.
You just described Belos to a T.
Well said man
