I've watched a million golf swing vids and none have made a change so quickly in my driving game. I watched this and then went to my local Trackman sim. I've always fought negative AoA and thusly, high driver spin. This got me from 0-3 down to 0 to 2.8 up! Hit the longest drive of my life on the sim tonight, but it didn't feel like max effort. I have speed and generally am in the running (and winning a few) corporate tourney long drive holes in the few tourneys I plan a year, but this changed my ball flight so positively. Ran out of time before I ran out of juice. I'm really excited to get back and try this again! THANK YOU!!!
Dude. I hit 300 today! Your lag video was the secret. I was trying to create it in the takeaway, not the downswing. I just realized a 10 month goal!!!! Wish I could post a pic of the monitor numbers!
I was driving the ball 220-230 with roll, never knew why i couldnt get more distance, now im at 265-280, great instructions. I sent this to all my buddies. Hopefully they watched it. Now I’m going to watch the rest of your videos.
Clay, I did what you said, and the ball did exactly what you said and demonstrated. Best drive of my life!!! 18th hole, 262 yards with a great draw. Next shot sucked, but couldn’t stop smiling from the drive. Thanks for the great advice!!
I am a 5 handicap that is not a long hitter. Age 58 good drives are 240 with slight fade. Watched and practiced this. I played today. In 9 holes I drove one 265 and one 280. Wow. Thanks.
I can not praise this video enough Have always struggled with getting on the inside of plane, driver has been a nightmare and so frustrating In the course of a range session gone from 90% slices to 90% soft draws I have the feel I have been looking for with the driver Thank you so much for putting it out there on TH-cam
I’m just getting into golf. I’ve been really struggling with my driver, I’ve watched countless videos! I watched this video tonight, went to the range and hit some bombs!! Still needs tuning but felt so so much better and cleaner!
Thank you! Somehow I "lost" my driver swing, hitting the ball 220 average with LPGA average swing speed. Handicap rapidly increasing and frustation to boot. I was all over youtube and booking multiple trackman sessions trying to figure it out. But this is the video that changed it, in particular the first tip on tilt. Boom, 220 became 245 average with some shots above 270. Those 25 avg yards are the difference between having iron vs hybrid on approach shots playing from 6500 yds. Big impact on GIR. This is the way.
I took this to the range yesterday. It took me a long time to get it working, I kept hitting the head cover I'd put down on my takeaway, just couldn't believe how much I needed to change, then it took a while to trust myself to really swing through correctly. Eventually I got it together and it really really worked time after time. It feels so different but so good. Thanks so much Clay.😁
thank you so much for this video. I just tried this on my home simulator and the results were great. I've never hit my driver so consistently on line during the same session and I gained about 25-30yds overall. the part where you swing out towards the wall really helped me.
This is the perfect video to teach people how to drive the ball well. I started doing all these things a few years ago and immediately began hitting the ball much further. You just feel that you're free to hit the ball as hard as you want with a high launch and low spin. I see so many people teeing the ball far too low and chopping down on it with the driver, creating way too much spin and very little distance.
I appreciate that you are specific when you are talking about a feeling for exaggerating something in practice. I grew up believing a bunch of silly things about the golf swing because people didn't make clear it was an exaggeration for a feeling, rather than something that was actually supposed to be done. Seems like a little thing, but thanks.
I am in complete shock over what this did for my driver swing today. I never thought I’d hit this far. Really believed I just wasn’t flexible enough or something. I owe you thousands of dollars for this information.
Though I joined Top Speed Golf and am working through the program, this 3-prong drill has spoken to me in a way I understand so clearly that it quickly led to strong improvements. I decided to do the unlimited video reviews through the website with Clay's head of instruction, Robin Rosado, and he instantly highlighted the parts I WASN'T doing and gave me drills for my specific flaws. Clay preaches over-exaggerating changes - or at least feeling like you are - so I've topped some drives 10 yards in front of the tee box, but on other holes hit wedge approaches instead of my usual 7s. Knew in advance I'd face frustrations, but that makes the steps forward all the more fun! Strong recommend.
One the best videos out there! I took my impact bag to the range and my second attempt was a beautiful high draw, which I am never able to do. One thing he doesn't tell you is to exaggerate the toe of the clubhead going into the back of the ball from the inside. This will help with the draw, help straighten the left leg on follow through and help you stay behind the ball. ***UPDATE - I can't believe nobody has commented on my post. I shot a 43 in league (11 handicapper) by using the tilt and the impact bag...and of course making sure my clubhead beats the handle to the ball and that my right hand is turning over well before reaching the ball. This video has changed my golf life!
I’m a member of TSG and enjoy all the content. I’ve been having so many problems with my driver and after one range session after watching this video, I started hitting a much more consistent draw and added distance as well. Thank you so much!!!
This video is one of your best, pretty much everything you suggested are things I have doing recently... and have been hitting my driver so much better. I was not creating enough back tilt.. and it was causing me to have tons of compensations with driver. Adding the tilt.. and that alley for the arms to move is huge.
Thanks Clay, Great videos as always, those of you who have not signed up to Top Speed Golf, well worth the subscription, even if you take it for one year, made a massive difference to my game.
Great tip regarding the arm positions, my right arm was always level or above my left arm at impact, making me come over the top, now tucking the right arm in to my my body i'm hitting the ball straight & further than ever, this seemed to be the golden nugget for me, thanks Clay
For anyone coming down steep...I was popping up drives 180 to 200 yards. I had already been trying to stay back like is mentioned in the beginning but, the real game changer was #3. Getting my right arm below my left through impact changed everything. Now averaging 275 in the fairway. Thanks Clay
Thank you for the knowledge you've shared Clay. It stands tested and true for a solid foundation that one can build on for years to come. Thank you for everything you do! BEST. GOLF. INSTRUCTOR. EVER. (PERIOD!!)
An observation about swing physics which explains WHY your HOW TO instructions work on a cause and effect level. It is the hands being forced to slow down that causes the club head to whip around them and accelerate. What causes that slow down of the hands is the feet staying flat on the ground limiting how far the hips can rotate open. This is something British golfer Abe Mitchell described in his 1933 book ‘Down To Scratch’ as “swinging into resistance’. In high speed photos of swings the shaft can be seen bowing forward ( towards the ball which is evidence of how much the club head accelerates around the hands if the golfers grip allows the lag (radial deviation in wrists) to release. Too much grip pressure in the fingers inhibits the radial-to-ulnar deviation change, the “crack the whip” thumbs up to thumbs down action which moves the club head several feet in the swing arc without much movement of the hands at that point of the swing. What really powerful balls strikers (like you) do expertly is to coordinate the lifting of the back heel and turning of the back foot and allowing the club force to pull the back wrist from cocked back (full extension) to straight and from thumb back (radial deviation) to thumb forward (ulnar deviation) to allow the club head to freely accelerate and the pull trail arm straight and release the hips to the finish. What poor ball strikers will be seen doing is lifting their back foot too soon. When that is done the hips and hands do not slow down as much or at all so there is never that equal but opposite Newtonian reaction of the club head whipping around the hands and accelerating. Instead of releasing lag through impact with the radial - ulnar deviation and club pulling back wrist from extended to straight the golf sustains the lag more through impact, releasing it after impact with the resulting ulnar deviation in the follow through causing the club head to accelerate again with wrist action after impact. Once I understood that cause and effect and focused on the timing of releasing my back heel off the ground relative to the sound of the club face striking the ball shot with 3W and Driver improved because of the cause and effect of slowing the hands and allowing time for the club head on the longer shaft to whip around them and close into the ball. Something else I finally realized is way Hogan suggested opening stance for short irons but closing it for long irons, woods and driver. The combination of a closed stance to the target line plus keeping the back heel on the ground makes the point where the hips and hands slow down and the club whips around them occur sooner in the downswing than when feet (heels line) is parallel or open which allows more time for the longer shafted club to swing around the hands to the ball which Hogan kept in the same place relative to the front foot for all clubs. The modern convention of keeping the stance parallel for all length clubs but moving the ball progressively further back in the stance as the club shafts get shorter mades the point of the swing where the hands slow consistent but the time between when the hips and hands stop and club face meets ball changes but the timing remains the same. Two different strategies to address the same goal of slowing down the hands and giving the longer clubs more time to swing around the hands to meet ball before releasing the back heel and hips to finish the swing.
I don’t have an impact bag. Instead I stood a pizza box on its end and pinned it to the ground with long tees. It looked like a short wall right behind the the ball. Best practice session ever.
A game changer. I battle hitting monster pull shots. The ball is snotted but if I’m lined up on 12 the ball flight is to 11. The adjustments in this lesson now have me hitting down my target line. Another swing cue I use to keep me “in the slot” is to tell myself to swing like I want to get the ball half way to my target. In golf a pretty swing is a powerful swing
Mate, you e changed the game of driving the ball with these golden lesson. So athletically intuitive, well explained and easy to follow. The ‘swing at the wall’ demo feels identical to how a baseball bomber hits it. That’s a masterclass right there mate 🎉 How about one like that for the irons/woods🙏
I can't thank you enough!!!!!! I did everything in this video and it ABSOLUTELY WORKED!!! I have been a chronic slicer for all of my life. I am 52. I have been doing this at the driving range and it has worked. I played my first round since using these techniques and I shot the best score of my life...AND...my drives were straight and on average over 275. I have seen other videos as well and all are extremely helpful. Thank you again!! Besides subscribing, how can I contribute?!
75 people are like "NO Bueno, You have to run and hit drives like happy gilmore, so thumbs down," while the remaining sane 5k people are blown away, or at least agree and respect his ability to break down the info in a non-complex way and agree with the technique. Should be zero dislikes. Coach of the Year Award right here...
This is a great video. I use Skytrak at home and my normal drive on the sim is around 230 to 240 yards. After following each step in the video I hit a best of 295 Yds! Incidentally, of all the steps, the one that really added yards was the impact bag and making sure the swing was almost an exaggerated in-to-out motion. I did hit a couple right which was due to the face at impact. I wish you had said something about the clubface at impact during this drill. I am assuming it should be on the target line? Or a little open to target line but closed to the path?
I believe I have the stance you described in the beginning. However, I have to fight it because I hit fat and leave my weight on my right that way. If I don’t hit fat I hit it so high I lose distance. My last thought before swinging has to be “keep shoulders level” so I don’t lower the right and hit fat. I like the hammer explanation though. I’ll give that a try.
Clay, appreciate these great videos. If you could swing club to position and slowly show motion without the follow through. I want to see motion getting to impact
Great video.......all I have to do now is build trust in my motion. Some days I fight Mr. Snappy......but at least I know what I'm doing wrong & can correct it on the course.
These driver tips literally worked wonders for my game already. I hit more fairways with a ton more confidence than I ever have. Game changer for me, it feels easier than the way I was hitting driver. Thanks!
Clay, The impact bag drill works for Irons too - right? I realize the set up is different and you hit down at the ball - but wanted to make sure I can put a impact bag at feet’s distance and practice Thanks
Thanks for the shoulder dip lesson, I'm 61 and tried it out today and was crushing it with no fear. Nice little draws around 250 to 275 yards. I really didn't try it with my other clubs, does the technique work with all the clubs?
These are great tips for Driving. You need to hit a bit up on the ball and catch up a bit higher than the center of the club for a low spin ball flight.
Clay, I see alot of your videos concerning high draws and getting inside and slotting the club. As someone who wants to play a Dustin Johnson fade, what is my goal as far as swallowing the club? With a "tennis racket" wrist position, shallowed out for power, how do we still get fades at proper "slotted" angle?
Clay -- love your videos. I am 70, 8 handicap, who has had spinal fusion due to a cancerous tumor on my L4 vertebrae...fusion of L3 to L5 and radiation -- doing PT and will be playing golf in October -- 6 months from surgery. Do you have videos that would help me with what will be a shorter, less or no turn golf swing? Thanks.
Hi Clay; A question about clubhead speed with driver, or any club, for that matter but not how to get more. How do I get my max speed in front of the ball during the release rather than behind it? The WOOSH drill is fine with the club upside down because the grip is obviously lighter but it doesn't help when the club is swung normally.
I read a statement about a study using high speed measurements of Tour Professionals' Driver Swings that showed the highest club head speed in the swing was achieved at 2 Feet to 18 inches BEFORE Impact! (In Golf, "Feel and Real" seldom match)
CLAY.. That a great video on driver swing totally broken down..I have never notice the right arm gap at parallel..it very hard to shallow out the golf club and release at impact..I spend alot of time to get this right..thanks
One question on the stance, is it better to stand further behind the ball like in your videos?? I’m typically standing close to the ball and my stance isn’t as wide and that’s when I’m topping or slicing the ball
Great instruction... I will say I did laugh at the first one you hit though... I was thinking you hit that at least 350... Saw the club head speed and loud pow then I looked over at the smash factor 😂😂😂 literally shanked it 300 yards dudes a beast!!!
There's no link to the video in the description, the cards dont work, and when I look on your page to find the video, it's of some other guy, not the one that was previewed. 🤦🏻♂️
LOL this channel has grown so much during the Covid golf boom TSG needs to handle the admin things properly. I find the older videos more useful but the concepts found here have helped my game tremendously over the years.
This is a feeder link. The Top Speed Golf site is EXTREMELY helpful to even better players, but it’s not free. There’s an annual subscription. TOTALLY worth it.
Im the opposite of this. When an instructor showed me the video, I was amazed that my head is actually moving backwards from the ball and Im hanging on the back foot. Its a very hard fix to try get on the front foot!
Clay this is a another great video. When I concentrate on keeping my head behind the ball I struggle with the weight shift to my left side. Any suggestions?
Do these drills and also focus on your end pose. Make sure your back leg has the glute and calf flexed with chest pointed where the ball should go. Other than that it’s just practice, as long as your hips are twisting your weight is going to naturally shift. Stop thinking about it, focus on contact and swing path. I think one of the key takeaways from this video is that a drastic weight shift will harm accuracy/consistency more than it will improve power.
283, not 306...total distance will vary so much depending on the course. I play a course and at times you get maybe a foot of roll. But after swing one, its looks like you still have a lot of speed left in the bag, swing looked smooth.
I've watched a million golf swing vids and none have made a change so quickly in my driving game. I watched this and then went to my local Trackman sim.
I've always fought negative AoA and thusly, high driver spin. This got me from 0-3 down to 0 to 2.8 up!

Ran out of time before I ran out of juice. I'm really excited to get back and try this again!
THANK YOU!!!
My pleasure!
Started at 245, 7 months later I carried 288 yesterday. Love. Your. Videos.
Dude. I hit 300 today! Your lag video was the secret. I was trying to create it in the takeaway, not the downswing. I just realized a 10 month goal!!!! Wish I could post a pic of the monitor numbers!

So glad it helped!
This is probably the most packed information for a Driver Swing.. THANKS!!!
No problem, glad you enjoyed it!
Clay, I did what you said, and the ball did exactly what you said and demonstrated. Best drive of my life!!! 18th hole, 262 yards with a great draw. Next shot sucked, but couldn’t stop smiling from the drive. Thanks for the great advice!!

Have always struggled with getting on the inside of plane, driver has been a nightmare and so frustrating
In the course of a range session gone from 90% slices to 90% soft draws
I have the feel I have been looking for with the driver
Thank you so much for putting it out there on TH-cam
Awesome! Glad it helped!
Went away from you for a while but as I’m learning more about my swing… your techniques make so much more sense.
love how you said “the feeling” allows me to understand more of what i need to feel, thank you !
You're so welcome!
This guy's consistently been one of the best golf instructors through the years. You can't go wrong listening to Clay Ballard. Flat out.
Agreed!
A friend of mine has flown to take lessons in person with Clay. Well worth I’d say, based on his low handicap:)
I’m just getting into golf. I’ve been really struggling with my driver, I’ve watched countless videos! I watched this video tonight, went to the range and hit some bombs!! Still needs tuning but felt so so much better and cleaner!
Awesome!!

I’ve been having that problem all year. I know my long drives are in there. I will be excited if I ever see me hitting in in sweet spot
Clay long time no watch. You are the best!! All the best. Thank you!! Ray
Thanks for the tips clay, much needed

A lot of helpful insights. You are a good communicator that knows the golf swing.

Thank you so much for this content. I’ve been struggling driving the ball. I can’t figure it out. I will try and practice these steps
Just joined in and really impressed with your training. Thanks.
Thanks for the great video, Clay, I wanted to know if you give two or three day lessons ??? and where are you located. Thank you very much.
Best driving drill, explained thoroughly.
These driver tips literally worked wonders for my game already. I hit more fairways with a ton more confidence than I ever have. Game changer for me, it feels easier than the way I was hitting driver. Thanks!
Love this video dude! Great job.
Clay.. i have a question, why fade is more controlable than draw? Please explain this in a video. Thank you
It’s not lol
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing.
Clay,
I see alot of your videos concerning high draws and getting inside and slotting the club. As someone who wants to play a Dustin Johnson fade, what is my goal as far as swallowing the club? With a "tennis racket" wrist position, shallowed out for power, how do we still get fades at proper "slotted" angle?
I wouldn't bother with "swallowing the club" -- the rubber grip tastes awful! 🤣
Best driving instruction i have seen !!!!
Thanks.
Nice tips especially the last one. 👍👍👍
Great advice thank you!
My pleasure!
Thanks Clay👍, great advice, just got new driver, putting your advice into practice and striking alot better,
Hi Clay; A question about clubhead speed with driver, or any club, for that matter but not how to get more.
Great video! Easy to understand and easy to practice on your own!
Great instruction... I will say I did laugh at the first one you hit though... I was thinking you hit that at least 350... Saw the club head speed and loud pow then I looked over at the smash factor 😂😂😂 literally shanked it 300 yards dudes a beast!!!
Thank you for this content. Will definitely try this out on the range.
Do you have any drills to go from hooking to drawing the ball? What about the grip, from the video is looks somewhat strong.
Great content.. New setup helped right away. Thanks
Lol😂
This is a feeder link. The Top Speed Golf site is EXTREMELY helpful to even better players, but it’s not free. There’s an annual subscription. TOTALLY worth it.
Would like to see some of these critical moves in slow motion.
change playback speed to slow down video.
Im the opposite of this.
When an instructor showed me the video, I was amazed that my head is actually moving backwards from the ball and Im hanging on the back foot.
Its a very hard fix to try get on the front foot!
Clay great video. Is this the same position that I should be in when hitting my irons?
No.

Nice basics, thanks for giving us some good stuff to work on.
Tremendous This works just need to practice all 3 steps!
Great lesson, Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great content clay as always mate ,your videos are A+ mate, big respect from Liverpool England:)
If i want to have a power fade do i still need to tilt my spine at address not sure what to do when fading the ball tks
Make a video playing at least 9 holes Clay. Everyone is wanting to see it 👍. We would like to see your great golf advice in action!
Thanks this is so helpful!
Very clear explanation. Thanks.
Impact bag link?
Sure! Sorry I forgot to include that! Here you go: eyelinegolf.com/collections/swing-aids/products/impact-cube?rfsn=190391.c2655
Clay is the very best
Can you make a video of the people who are too shallow and getting stuck
283, not 306...total distance will vary so much depending on the course. I play a course and at times you get maybe a foot of roll. But after swing one, its looks like you still have a lot of speed left in the bag, swing looked smooth.
Will this work for a senior who has limited mobility and shorten backswing? I typically hit my drive about 185
Can you share the link to impact bag
Sure! Here you go: eyelinegolf.com/collections/swing-aids/products/impact-cube?rfsn=190391.c2655
Im gonna try this hammer technique tomorrow.. if it works I’m signing up for your lessons on the website for sure
