As a fan, I hate to say this, but Ian Brown singing out of tune was always the thing that let down an otherwise perfect band. In other ways he's great; the sound of his voice, the swagger, the aggression, but listening to them live, about 25% of my attention is distracted towards willing him to keep the vocals in tune, which he never does. The fact that everyone else in the band is so spot-on just highlights it even more.

I often wondered if it was just nerves or that he couldn't hear his vocals come through the monitor. After seeing the "made of stone" documentary (excellent) and learning more about what the band were about (fascinating), I understand and support Ian Brown's outburst in this instance. They were professionals, they worked hard and with all their hearts on the music, then it all get's cocked up by the BBC or something. They deserved feeling frustrated by that, because they were very special, but were treated badly by the media. That blonde cow on the program wouldn't know The Stone Roses from a cow plop.

I heard from a reliable source that it WAS set up...not staged though. Apparently the then manager, Gareth Evans, was worried about Ian's vocals not being ready up to scratch for the great British public to hear so early in their rise that he told Cressa (the Roses own sound guy) that if it's sounding shit, turn the amps up to max so there'd be a power failure. and i supposed it was some kind of publicity. Nah...they never got to finish.
