When I was a kid her brand was the only brand my Mom would buy. As a kid I thought the lady on the bottle and box actually made the stuff. It was quite a treat for Sunday breakfast for an Army family.

So basically, the Aunt Jemima character initially started as a racist stereotype, but after the brand got bought out it gave several black women enough fame that even one of their graves is a historical landmark. A wound, wether physical or emotional can heal, it is the desired outcome unless the person enjoys their wound or gives it some value or reaps some reward from it. It is necessary to healing to not disturb the wound, some favor and attention may be given to it, keeping it clean for example, but to continually press, poke and squeeze it, will prolong the process or make it worse. As my simple Grandmother often said when I had a skinned knee as a child or problems with my girlfriend as a young man, “if you don’t quit picking at it, it won’t never heal up”

I had friends who dressed in black face while hanging around with black friends, and it was never discussed nor was it an issue, Now im not saying it shouldn't have been an issue. But like most things pre internet we were just unaware. Dressing up as Michael Jackson was just something fun to do and in no way shape or form was meant to be racist or rude. You have to remember back then peoples understanding of the world from a social perspective was formed from our experiences within the years of 8 - 18 anything prior to this or after hadn't much of an impact on who we were and or who we would ever be. I personally am having difficulty now at the age of 41 in understanding this hyper political SJW era, I know without a doubt I am a good person and have never done anything out of malice to offend or hurt someone, But now I am being told that who I was and am is wrong somehow. I think the younger generation is overly sensitive, and I think a tipping point is being reached. It's unfortunate because I feel great strides were being made by my generation Gen X BTW Equality, womens rights , LGBTQ rights and so much more... But rather then a positive movement with todays generation, it feels unhinged, disconnected and loud. Nothing of any value or consiquence, just buzz words hash tags and cancel culture. Todays youth seem driven by their inability to accept reality, therefor they push and push till all you have left is removing Aunt Jemima off the bottles of maple syrup, and Avocado's on Toast.

Years later a pancake mix was developed for the brand and she was the first model hired to portray the character at in person appearances. Then her image was used on the packaging replacing a drawing that was the first representation of Aunt Jemima. Also, she was not a millionaire. She was so poorly paid for her work that she continued to do domestic work until just a few years before she died. The story of Nancy Green is one of exploiting a powerless woman of color.

She IS a fictional character. Nancy Green "played" the part. She was replaced once she died with a different woman so the character could continue. Aunt Jemima was based on a minstrel (racist) show and song. Aunt Jemima is a "Mammy" type created from American slavery. There's nothing "homey" about her except to white people who like to see big, black women as "mammy" types. Someone to mother them in place of their own mothers. There have been pancake mixes that included powdered eggs and milk (add water only) but these have never been a huge success because everyone wants fresh eggs and milk in their morning pancake.
Who gives a dam about taking her off the box of pancakes they didn't pay her relatives any money so they can keep that mess mix u can taste the artificial ingredients in the mixture pancakes came from slavery the slaves would make them and the syrup the kids like the pancakes some people called them hot cakes with syrup and the hoe cake was cook on the tool that they worked in the field with.

unreal how some southern accents are so similar so far away. i’m fascinated by the huge differences in southern accents. only southerners can understand it. even neighboring counties in a state can have unique sounds. pronunciations different from each other. some so subtle only neighboring counties can detect the difference. i am saddened by the fact our accents are vanishing. even in my kids. i still have that old fashion accent of my daddy but my grandparents were very different. most from the depression era expressions and old sayings. thanks for the response. and good luck with your education and look forward to more from you. it’s greatly appreciated. i try to spread the word about ya.

People that think this is racist, are uneducated , this Image is iconic it says nothing of racist. When I ate it I tasted nothing that tasted like Slavery or Racism . I thought the woman in the picture cooked and made this delicious food . And I looked forward to eating whatever she cooked. She’s part of my family.
I lived in Rhinelander, Wisconsin during the early 60's. There were no blacks in our town. Once, a black family from Milwaukee had a hard time getting accommodations at the local "motor lodge." It was such an unusual occurrence that it made the local newspaper! I think I was in 1st grade when Aunt Jemima came to our school to do a lyceum. She was delightful. She told stories and sang songs and, I suppose, talked about pancakes although I don't remember that part. What I do remember is developing a theory that she wasn't a "real black person" because during her performance she opened her hands and her palms weren't black at all. As a matter of fact, they were pretty much just like mine - or mine were pretty much like hers. She did more to promote racial understanding in 20 minutes before an auditorium of white elementary school kids than the entire BLM campaign will ever accomplish - if there's any ambition to promote any kind of harmony and understanding. Sad to see uninformed whiners trying to erase her memory.

All I’ve EVER bought is Aunt Jemima brand pancakes and syrup. Always been the best as far as I’m concerned. I always liked the Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup bottle too. Both women always reminded me of someone’s aunt.
Coming to a store near you: Karl Marx Syrup, Uncle Lenin’s Rice, Joseph Stalin’s Krispies (not sold in Ukraine), Mao’s little red hot sauce, Fidel’s black beans, and many more.

It wasn't on my list. I have a full bottle of Log Cabin syrup in the pantry.

I watched this because I was interested in the history of the product. Discontinuing Aunt Jemima is like saying good-bye to an old friend.
I had to leave because of all the negative comments. It's a fictional character fashioned after a real person. The whole world's gone crazy.
Aunt Jamima gets my vote. Give her credit where credit is due.
Aunt Jemima came to my area around 1960. The local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People objected.

I have heard of Aunt Jemima though she is really encountered here is the UK. We do get Uncle Ben's rice, and I assume that like Aunt Jemima he is fictional, as well as Quaker Oats though I prefer Scott's Porridge Oats.
I hope at the exhibition 'Aunt Jemima' was paid by the pancake as she would have made a pretty penny out of it.

My grandma had an Aunt Jemima cookie jar on her refrigerator. I remember it from back in the fifties and sixties. It is indeed terrible this iconic American image has been victimized by Howard Zinn style characterization.

Minstrel Shows' heydays were in the late 19th century with Vaudeville mostly replacing it at the turn of the century.
