Making of wooden roof structure

  • After a few videos without a robot, it's time for one with it :) This roof structure was done for a long year customer who patiently waited for us for quite some time until we finished the airport project. The house with the glulam roof structure was designed by Krešimir Romić and Filip Romić from SKUP-A architecture studio . Glulam beams were ordered from Austria and cut to measure in our shop. I used Kuka kr150 robots with 6 axis for milling ends of the beams to correct geometry. some parts were milled using the hand router. All visible elements were painted with white water based coat from Sikkens. Other wooden elements were dipped into green anti pest, fungicidal solution. On the top of assembled glulam structure are the layers as follows. 2cm spruce plywood plates, tar hydro insulation, 12 cm 50kg polyurethane thermal insulation foam in between alternating direction planks (outsourced), 5 cm air flow space, 18mm usb, roofing foil. Final roof cover will be in sheet metal which will be done by another company.
I really enjoyed working on this unique project and hope you like it too! I will post pictures of finished roof on my instagram so make sure to follow :D

Awesome design and build! - but... that ridge beam doesn't appear to be adequate for the apparent load; especially if it is just solid sawn lumber and not engineered lumber.

It'd probably still hold up ok. If the top of the concrete wall was sufficiently reinforced that would help plus the diagonal bracing not only looks awesome, it also transfers loads in all directions, not linear like a conventional frame.

dvdmpastorwalker Yeah, right, you’re the expert. Where are your videos you sad little man?

@@stevothefellow I'm a builder - I have been in the business for 25 years. The majority of the roof load is reliant on the integrity of the ridge beam. Having or producing a video is not a qualifier or prerequisite for expertise. I'm quite happy.

Cross sections of all beams are calculated for maximum snow load and uplifting wind loads. Also all exposed beams have to be 2cm thicker in all directions to protect the load bearing core in case of the fire. Taking all that into consideration, you can say its more than safe..

@@lignumchannel I understand allowable load calculations for dimensional and engineered lumber (compression and tension forces - static and dynamic loads regarding deflection parameters); ANY clear-span ridge beam construction determines that the ridge beam is responsible for the majority of the roof load.

Not only a very nice design, but for sure a strong one. But a dont like the idee to combine wood with concrete or metal.

The house is far from finished and all of the concrete will be covered, I think it will look awesome when complete
