  • Filmed during 1991 and 1992 by Malcolm Wrigley, this video shows some of the incredible variety of trains that could still be seen on the Cambrian route (Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth/Pwllheli) in the early 90's. .

Fantastic back then with the variety of trains. So boring now with ERTMS spoiling everything. Superb video, and the best railway video on TH-cam 🙌

Thanks for sharing - very much my memories from my adolescence! At 12m30s the 37 and Mk IIs is, I think, the final run of Intercity's Cambrian Coast Express in May 1991. Interesting to see the full formation of the land cruise train although I didn't see it as a kid - was it the only occasion the Mk III sleepers made it along the Cambrian? - surprised its just a single 37 the ETH must have been disconnected from the sleepers?! although the Mk1 kitchen is obviously a gas car so 37+5 Mk 1s would be ok for the ETH, adding the sleepers would have likely melted some kit!!

I used to live just down the road from Newtown railway station, I do remember class 37in green there and a Class 31 running around Turbots in the station

Those were the days! Loco hauled trains are pretty rare on the Cambrian these days.

As an 18 year old who lives in Tywyn and grew up travelling on this line the thought of 10 carriage intercity trains going up and down the coast makes me very jealous of people born 20 years prior to me

Superb capture! I always remember that we had a small pool of 37/4s in the Stanlow pool when I was based at the 'port' at the time. They always seemed to be commandeered for Cambrian duties.Especially at weekends .Presumably because of their RA & the fact that they were RETB & ETS fitted.Happy times!

I remember visiting Ellesmere Port just before the stabling point shut. We were greeted by a very friendly driver who gave us a full tour. It was a Sunday morning so very little moving. I remember him telling me that the Jarrow tanks was just about to become a lodging turn. Very rare to find in the early nineties.

Many thanks - I have happy memories of train spotting in York in the 80's. I may have some footage from York in '87, I'll see if I can get it out. Thanks for subscribing. Cheers!

Brilliant video, used to work down the Cambrian, alas with the ubiquitous 158's and occasional 97s as traction down there. Have subscribed keep these videos coming.

Yes NR spoilt the line with the cheap nasty error prone ERTMS and failed to provide a mobile unit for visiting traction. Local authorities missed the opportunity to object and now have to live with the consequences of very few excursions to their holiday resorts.
