@@TheSquad4life Influenced in a sense that an Alien ship lands in the desert that isn't under the control of it's occupants, and that those occupants are then treated as an underclass. @@StanAlter exactly as someone who grew up on this show, we shouldn't expect younger millennials and gen z to know all the shows from before they were born. Unlike growing up in the 90s and before there wasn't over 200 channels there weren't 1,000 different tv shows let alone current streaming capabilities. When a show came out it was out for years even after they were no longer being made hence why we have syndication on TV shows. Because back then there just wasn't lots to choose from, so what was out you knew that show 30 years later. Unlike now there is so much out there to be seen you can't keep up. It's why people won't realize tv shows or movies now and days until way after because there's so much to choose from you can't remember it all..

This movie was ahead of its time. Not true sci/fi, it was more of a crime/drama story that just happened to feature aliens.
The television series (and the t.v. movies that followed), however, were arguably far superior to the film.
Kenneth Johnson expanded the narrative, fully fleshing out the Newcomer's culture and exploring human/alien relations (and relationships) beyond the original script.
The cast's on-screen chemistry made the series engaging- especially between Gary Graham and Eric Pierpoint, as well as Graham and Terri Treas.
The show remains a personal favorite of mine to this day.

    • @cardsfanboy
      @cardsfanboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is kinda the advantage of a tv series... you can expand.. Everytime someone tells me they are going to incorporate a book into a movie, I always want to ask "why not a tv show"... yes Harry Potter managed to make it work, but Game of Thrones gave us a lot more hours of entertainment from a similar number of books.... Movies are great for "one offs" where you do a single story... but shows are better for developing the universe... if I was a producer in this age, I would honestly consider how to take the movie I'm developing into a tv show... Especially if the movie I'm developing is not probably not going to hit the big numbers for a sequel... just that it will be successful...

    • @johnnyzzed2035

I think this was a sci fi movie just told from a buddy cop perspective. The science fiction aspect is more of a cultural impact than technological one. It brought up the question how do we treat beings who are actually other than human that have a different culture & who are actually superior in some ways? Would our fundamental human rights apply to extraterrestrials? Should we be afraid of being replaced by a far superior race? The film rarely delved into the ideas it brought up and just followed the normal buddy cop plot points which didn't distinguish it for the other at the time. I think I heard that it was supposed to be part of a buddy cop "(something) Heat" series of films with Red Heat, Dead Heat, and this was to be Alien Heat, but was changed when Dead Heat tanked. Surprised it was not brought back for the current issues of illegal immigration and policy brutality.

"Not as good as it should have been" sums it up pretty well. I've always wondered what a director like John McTiernan could've done with this flick.
Oh.. and that gun is actually real ... I've shot it. It's a Freedom Arms 83 Single Action, chambered in .454 Casull. It's still one of the most powerful handgun cartridges around and in the late 80s might have been the most powerful in the world.

During the large influx of immigrants into the US through Ellis Island, the people doing the intake couldn't spell a lot of the names so they just gave people whatever names they felt like and that was their new name going forward. 1988. Van Nuys, CA. Got off the bus at my usual stop. On the opposite corner was the discount/dollar store I frequented...but there was something off about it. It had been re-dressed...and there were strange-looking bald-headed people all around that side of the street.
I'd walked right past the "Alien Nation" movie set/on location. Corrner I refer to is @0:40.

I loved this movie and the TV show!! If I remember correctly, there was an alien that snapped his own neck. I thought that was the most badass seen ever made and still do.

@@SunBunz to keep quite and to say "fuck you" to the cops. He was in the interrogation room and killed himself right there. badass.

I was brought up on most sci-fi from the 80s and 90s because of my mother's love for it. I loved Alien Nation and the whole idea behind it, the whole idea would be even better and more important now with increasing reluctance to accept immigration in any way all over the world. Plus it was one of those shows that had very little in the way of any kind of visual effects outside of the makeup and prosthetics used on the aliens. I would love a modern version of this but would probably ruin the memories. The series done a great job of actually continuing on in a good way too unlike most movie to series adaptions of the time.

I saw this in the theatre; it was great. I have a strong memory that the alien cop's name was 'Sam Francisco", though; there was even a bit of a joke about it where Caan was like, "GTFO" around where they were introduced. I can't believe I misremembered George as Sam!

How could his name be George Jettson when they had a scene where the Newcomer said that the name they gave him was Sam Francisco, and Sykes throws a fit and says “ I’m calling you George from now on”

Not only did I see this in the theater (in 1988) and saw the TV show, I remember when the advertisements for District 9 started up I (and all my friends) called it a rip-off of Alien Nation.

In the show, the joke is that his name was "Sam Francisco" but Sikes thought that was too dumb and told him "nope, I'm not calling you that, you are now George Francisco".

I loved it. My only complaint was that it had no narration the whole film and then in the last 20 seconds Caan narrates. It's like they just threw it in

And it sported the best movie-dialogue insult that I've ever heard, save for the epic French Castle scene in "Monty Python & the Holy Grail". An Alien mutters something at Sykes, who demands that his partner Sam "George" Francisco translate it despite his great reluctance to do so. Finally, he gives: "he said, 'Your mother mates out of season'" -- and James Caan's hothead cop gets physical, in a literally universal reaction to such insults.

Saw the movie during its release; own the dvd. Read the comic adaptations. The tv series (with subsequent follow-up movies), which I've watched twice, was a really good expansion of the source material (especially Eric Pierpoint's performance as 'George'); exploring the characters, family, culture, and racial/societal angle without flinching. Good stuff all around.
