    Also something that becomes obvious when someone does estrogen or testosterone therapy is that both redistribute fat distribution in the body and women hold more muscle mass in their lower bodies than men.
    In the army, they're looking at making different types of bags that redistribute the weight more to the lower body rather than upper body so women can use their advantages rather than equipment designed for men which of course focuses on their upper body strength! Though the differences between the two are like 60/40 - 40/60 distributions.

  • @nathanielelia2468

    Hey Jeff, so quick explanation to your comment about differing research on muscle growth. I am PhD student currently studying muscle physiology and the literature suggests that at a cellular level, the muscle fiber regardless of gender has the same potential to grow (slight asterisk here as hormones play a role in growth). However, men being able to grow more muscle does not conflict with this thought as you said. As you mentioned slightly later, the difference between men and woman can largely be attributed to a difference in myofiber, or muscle cell, number. Because you do not gain myofibers from working out, you only expand them, males can gain more total muscle mass due to having a larger number of myofibers in most muscle groups that can be expanded.

    • @iuhjuy1094
      @iuhjuy1094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      And men have more type 2 muscle fibers which could grow more than type 1 muscle fibers.
      And having same potential is kinda misleading, because that doesn't mean women can build same muscle mass,(due to the differences in myonuclei numbers), that means they can build muscle as much as man if they inject testosterone.
      And even with that, their limits are much lower because of having less muscle cells which you mentioned.

    • @Bahamuttiamat
      @Bahamuttiamat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Because this “science” is highly unlikely to have come from studies on women. And because women have cycles. 28 day (give or take) cycles. Men’s cycles are 24 hours. So most studies won’t put the time, money or energy into understanding what’s actually healthy for women. So many women full of male hormones and high stress levels when our female bodies are literally not built for the same hormones and hormone levels.
      Maybe cardio is ok for girls? Maybe different girls need different workout and exercise plans.
      One size fits all never works.

I get sport related massages to ease some of the soreness but the expenses become way too much and not all of the tightness gets resolved. Not to mention I have been anemic most of my life.I think this issue is now affecting my breathing and tightness. The oxygen input and output in my blood I would imagine might be the key? I reqlly loved this video, thank you so much for making this. U dont see many men encouraging women who want to put on lots of muscle, so many hold the opinion that women should stay just lean and feminine but the reality is that there are many women out there who do want to get bulky so i really appreciate and admire the fact that you were completely open to both sides. Absolutely amazing. Do you think you could make more videos on how women can train to get bulky? Ive googled it snd gotten absolutely no results, its shocking how the whole would seems to be fixated on a single idea and option. I really appreciate you for acknowledging, encouraging, empowering, and applauding the strengths of women as well as their literal potential for strength; so many people just talk sbout how men are stronger than women and that women will just never be able to compare. Thank you so much

    • @samyakhp4353
      @samyakhp4353 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      This video might be a bit misleading. Even though you gain muscle at relatively the same speed. Women start out with much less muscle mass and weaker. (Let's say a woman starts out at 13kg muscle mass and man starts out 23 kg muscle mass, which is usually how it is depending on the body weight. Let's say you both gain 33% muscle mass in 6 months, that means the woman put on 4.33kg of muscle mass whereas the man put on 7.67kg of muscle. Even though the relative speed is same, men put on more muscle and the potential of muscle mass is more for men than women).
      So don't bet worried, even though you increase muscle mass at the same rate, you don't have the same muscle mass. You won't bulk up.
      One tip: since women have more type 1 muscle fibers, high rep range is better suited (and you can recover faster). Doesn't mean you don't have to do low rep range, explosive workouts, but more of high-rep workouts will be better.

    Revisiting this as my wife and I are re-training after some time off adjusting to our first baby. Recommendations line up with our experience quite well - I may be capable of more mechanical work on a per set basis, but by comparison my wife only requires around half the recovery time between sets to get back within a rep of the preceding set, for a given RPE. Likewise, with both of us in a detrained state, we both have tended to gain strength proportionally to our size at a similar rate (my wife managing to get more sets in than me for a given amount of time in the gym).
    Thanks for the information, Jeff!

    but if men have, according to some research, the same muscle building potential as women, even tough the have 15x the testosterone, then why does extra testosterone in the shape of anabolic steroids increase the potential to build muscle? if a factor of 15 does not really make a difference, then why should an extra dose of testosterone? also i thought testosterone made you recover faster as well, but now i hear women recover faster than men because of estrogen? so does that mean higher testosterone does not make you recover more quickly?

    Men can build more muscle than women. I haven't seen a woman naturally attain bigger arms than men (when comparing bodybuilders with bodybuilders), for example. Assuming they are natural, the reason women don't build as much muscle despite being able to recover faster than men and therefore, being able to do a higher volume training is because they don't have nearly as much testosterone as men. It's the same reason why a natural bodybuilder will never build as much muscle mass even if they were to do more volume than steroids users. The level of testosterone present in the body is the major factor when it comes to determining your "potential" for total muscle mass that you can build. The rest is hard work, rest and a good diet.

      When they mentioned women being able to gain muscle at the same rate as men I'm pretty sure they were meaning in proportion. Cause think about it if one man and one woman of the same weight did the same workouts relative to there strength and they both gained 1 pound of muscle that would mean that the women gained a higher percentage of lean muscle mass then the man. Because as stated in the video men have on average a higher amount of muscle mass.

    1:39 The same RELATIVE growth potential. So an untrained individual might gain 50% more muscle through training, but since women only have (lets say) half the muscle-mass to begin with they only gain half. Adding testosterone seems to pretty much increase the base muscle mass, which is why you can even get more muscle-mass by taking steroids and not training at all.

    As always, love your videos! One thing that I found interesting was the fact that women have more type 1 muscles than men, yet they are still lower than men at long distance running. I wonder if it has to do with the difference of muscle mass between men and Women

    I changed my workout routine to body weight/power yoga/calisthenics/low weight lifting but highhhhh reps bc with heavy lifting and less cardio, I was getting “bulky.” I felt heavy. My clothes stopped fitting. And when I saw photos of myself, I looked overweight, not fit. It was frustrating bc I was working really hard in my exercises. However I feel much better with the workout changes. I guess I just found what works for me and what makes me feel good. And that’s all that matters to me, I guess.
