Prince was amazing and he could wear anything. He was always so well dress and outfits like this one only showed how confident he was about his body. No one just no one could wear the clothes he wore and look so good in them. I miss you Prince.
He danced & purposely turned his back & flaunted his butt. He also walked across the stage & turned several times for you to see it. The costume was Awesome on him. They did a Great job (flesh toned...Brilliant) & NO ONE except Prince could carry it off. Love4EVER!!!
I remember watching the MTV awards like a week later on channel 5 on a Friday night late. When he came out in that canary yellow outfit and turned around I fell out of my chair! He killed that performance! He's the reason Arsenio took the gig of hosting the show. That's what he said when he introduced Prince and the New Power Generation. I also remember In Living Color making fun, with the butt out jeans skit.
Theses type of shows are indispensable. You know you’re chronicling history. It’s your podcasts and similar that history will call back on as nowhere else is documenting the funny details in life of a musical icon
She call PRINCE (outfits) COSTUMES...I once heard PRINCE got offended when a guy photographing PRINCE and his BAND make Reference to their clothing as COSTUMES that guy was corrected and told never to refer to PRINCE clothing as COSTUMES.
From the second I saw this performance, I was in love with this outfit! I said a million times how I would love to have his wardrobe. This being at the top of the list. Of course that was back in the day, when I could have pulled this outfit off. Lol!
So u actually didn’t see his ass because they had mesh fabric dyed flesh color and the entire outfit was lined flesh tone fabric under the lace…illusion, like his album where he’s sitting on white Pegasus horse, he looks naked but he actually had on underwear and they painted the underwear to match his flesh! Prince loved to play people.
At the point of this Prince & the NPG MTV Music Awards event, I was 17 and a casual Prince fan. 2 be honest, I was more a fan of the 1999/Purple Rain era Prince and the Revolution. Even when he came out with the New Power Generation, I was asking "Where's Prince & the Revolution?" I didn't actually see the MTV Music Video Awards performance when it originally aired. But the next day at work I overheard people talking about Prince having his butt cheeks out. I simply didn't know what 2 say about it. Sometime later I read that the MTV Gett Off performance and video was inspired by the film Caligula from 1979 starring Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren. I went 2 see Caligula at an old small theater on a midnight Saturday night. I was absolutely stunned. What Prince did on the MTV Music Awards compared 2 that Caligula film was like a nursery rhyme and very tame.
I didn't think anything of the 91' MTV outfit because that was my hero and besides, they blurred the part where he turned around so I was OK with it and it was still a great performance....
It wasn't blurred on MTV, but in my neighborhood, it was replayed on FOX and it was cropped, from what i remember, but i don't remember blurring...... it's been 20+years after all.
It wasn't blurred because it was live. Love that nice throw back to his early days where he exposed that & A LOT MORE... his sex appeal was out of this world. I love this man!
A little known tibit: Prince met Elizabeth Berkley from Saved By The Bell backstage of the 1991 MTV Awards. Introduced to her by Arsenio and Damon Wayans. They left together after the show lol
Concerning Spike Moss....Yes that is OLD SCHOOL talk of where the ' Minneapolis Sound' originated...It takes old school to recognize the era of all that transpired...The significant others refute to acknowledge...Now can't get enough of THEIR Prince...Aint that nothing? Jimmie, Terry, Prince, Bean, Morris, Aundre...etc...were and are too disciplined and well mannered, even today. They remain stead fast and on course with their launched careers...During research on information put out on Prince, there was something missing...There was story confusion and misconceptions...Yet!...How did Prince family end up in Minneapolis...the cousins all in close proximity. Moss plugged in the gaps...What Moss is speaking, was very much felt and related having faced similar obstacles...Thinking, also, unless there was migration...What Moss was saying is like the hometown that I grew up in, Jim Crow style; pushed to one side of town, having your own place to hang out...restrictions...all that...In listening to Jimmy Jam speak of how he met Terry Lewis...The Upward Bound Program...There...in Minneapolis? Am a recipient...also...The difference in Minneapolis; the older mentors took time with the younger, they shaped and molded...prepared. Music played a big role to there lives...whereas...Sports produced...Jordan...Julius...etc. in this town. Having already seen the 'Northside documentary with Moss and Pepe...now get to hear the actual feel of emotions and sincerity of someone who live to tell it like it was then...the landmark to Prince success...Blessings...It feels so good to connect back to your roots....Yes they are looking and listening to this video...Now mark the time...Historically.
I remember seeing the 1998 MTV Music Awards on TV where Marilyn Manson did the song "Dope Show", with the band going completely Glam and Manson himself appearing in a day-glo blue, latex, ass out, outfit which even had boobs. townsquare.media/site/366/files/2014/11/2222374.jpg media.gettyimages.com/photos/marilyn-manson-during-1998-mtv-video-music-awards-at-universal-in-picture-id115486617 I wonder how big an influence Prince was on that particular performance.
This story borders on being somewhat false. Prince wore almost the exact same costume back in 1984 and 1985 during "The Purple Rain Tour" except it was navy blue. Peep the "Live In Syracuse" show which was out previously only on VHS but now on DVD as part of the "Purple Rain Deluxe set. The infamous MTV outfit was NOT new at all !
That 1985 Purple Rain tour outfit he wore during the "Possessed"/"Irresistible Bitch" etc. segment, was a kinda similar shock-rock concept, but it was black with glitter in the front and see-through black lace on the back of his pants as Prince wore black underwear. It wasn't a yellow outfit with buttock holes cut out in the pants with Prince underwearless bluntly prankishly mooning the audience.
Even if there's some similarities to what he wore on the Purple Rain tour, what was said that was false?? She's giving an account of working on this specific outfit for this specific performance (which is by far one of the most memorable because of that outfit)
Crazy how comics all played off of the ignorance that Prince was wearing chaps for a comic laugh ... I always said that the joke wasn't funny at all...Know myself that it was a lace outfit ... I though Chaps aren't even pants so I so most attempts at comic's trying to gain a comic prominence in the world of other comedians to me fell flat. It's strange but this particular ignorance is still reference TODAY as a on going joke Butt Out Jeans and ASS OUT CHAPS simple mindset are basic as these so called jokes referencing PRINCE yellow lace outfit that he wore at the MTV awards.
I was in college and watched this with a group of people. When he turned around the whole room exploded!
No one...and I mean NO ONE..could have pulled that off..except PRINCE..never before and not since...!
lies ppl do it every day
@@queendeedee2813 You lie...no one today pulls it off with the same "panache " as Prince did....
Who would want to pull that gross act

Good Lord! Prince was gorgeous! and SO SEXY! The rear window outfit was the bomb!
Prince was the sexiest man alive he looked good in whatever he wore, the less the better. Love you Prince R.I.P.
I love it when Prince had his ass out on stage and he flaunt it like a boss. It makes everyone go crazy 😍
Nope it was nasty.
That's just weird
my friend and I watched this when it happened. P turned around and he shouted, "Woo hoo air conditioning!!!" We fell on the floor laughing 🤣
Lmaooooo 😂
MTV: "so Prince.. what will you be wearing for the show?"
Prince: "my ass"

Prince could wear anything and pull it off and pull off it well!
except this
Oh yeah
She call PRINCE (outfits) COSTUMES...I once heard PRINCE got offended when a guy photographing PRINCE and his BAND make Reference to their clothing as COSTUMES that guy was corrected and told never to refer to PRINCE clothing as COSTUMES.
Yes he said “It’s not a costume, it’s just the clothes I wear.”
I remember that! But if you followed his career from the beginning it WAS shocking but not so past the leg warmer and bikini brief days.
DaddyFilms exactly!!! I think most people forget those early days! 😂💜💜
Facts lol PRINCE STAYED SHOWING HIS ASS
He was a beast of the stage, a sexy man, well built and a little obsessed with sex, in short, a rocker as we like them. All handsome!
And if course he had the butt to gett away with it! Lol
That was prince just didn't care
They had to cover up the naughty bits. LOL
Lol
Fantastic interview! The outfit must be yellow, lace and butt out! Too funny!
Hilarious...lol
From the second I saw this performance, I was in love with this outfit! I said a million times how I would love to have his wardrobe. This being at the top of the list. Of course that was back in the day, when I could have pulled this outfit off. Lol!
Love the Podcast!!!!!loved the MTV performance also, the man had no fear!!!!!!
He looked good in what ever he put on !! 💜💜🎸
Remember the Muppets even parodied this outfit. Lol. Very memorable moment.
Really?!
Only Prince!!!
Love you always. Prince!!!!

I remember even George Michael was blushing about Prince showcasing his own bottom!

It wasn't blurred because it was live. Love that nice throw back to his early days where he exposed that & A LOT MORE... his sex appeal was out of this world. I love this man!

there is no need to explain the sexiest and raunchiest piece of clothing in the history of rockstar outfits.he's prince...lol...we get it...lol!
..Only...Prince!!!!
lol his ass wasn't truly out his fashion designer said its flesh colored material.
One hot man..one hot outfit... gorgeous. My favorite for sure. All the seamstresses are magical. Thanks
A little known tibit: Prince met Elizabeth Berkley from Saved By The Bell backstage of the 1991 MTV Awards. Introduced to her by Arsenio and Damon Wayans. They left together after the show lol
Who left together after the show?
Nearly never happened at all if he never unhooked that lace on the sleeve from the microphone during the first few words!
His but was semi-exposed before on the Purple Rain Tour Vid,cept it was Black Lace. The Color for This was over-the-top and being on TV

Woulda been real nice.. my view in gold lace with silver/gold sheer shimmer underneath imo..
Love it! [💜]
Why Prince wore the outfit still goes unexplained..
Easy the haters can kiss this
Love you SheilaE

Duke Eatmon is that the one they put in the new deluxe purple rain ?

yes
He wore it because he could...end of story.
Cool interview
Talk about beating around the Bush to arrive at the point.
Prince sent Arsenio a similar suit.
If Arsenio would wear it, I'd throw up.

If this happened today, they would be dragged off the stage,
flagged by the rating system, and the show would be canceled. 🤔
Not in this woke, trans world
Major mistake, Prince!
You shouldn't have to explain _ "art"
