  • Here is my review of the Spyderco Manix 2. I have owned this knife for almost 2 years and I was never impressed with it. I purchased it because of all the positive reviews on TH-cam about it. Watch this video to find out why I have never carried this knife. Very few reviewers share my opinion, so if you want to hear a different perspective, please watch this video for my "dislike" commentary.

    Ok sorry, you can reliably thumb or spidy flick a manix2 all day long. Maybe you should carry it and use it before doing a review. I can tell you like knives and buying scales for them, but seeing the pristine condition of those knives I’m not even sure you use them for anything but opening flytanium boxes. Try getting better at releasing the lock before the blade is closed and it won’t bounce, just like any other pocket knife. You’re probably one of those people that complain about the Shaman tang banging into your finger. One would think that knife would have trained you to get your finger out of there before it closes and it won’t bounce either. Watching you trying to manipulate that ball cage lock is so frustrating…. My recommendation would be sit on the couch and play with the knife the whole time. You might need to adjust the pivot for no play and drop-free. It might even need to be broke-in a bit. You already have the knife, learn it, tweak it, and make it your own. I don’t think you have enough experience with it! You admit you’ve never even carried it or cut anything with it…. Why would we care what you think about it?

      I certainly use my knives for EDC tasks, which means they don't pry open windows or chop down trees 😂. The Manix 2 as a knife never really spoke to me. I clearly state in the video that I could get better at flicking the knife out with practice, but I don't think I should have to practice not cutting my hand wide open upon deploying the knife. I am certainly qualified to review the knife for it's ergos, it's geometry, it's fit and finish, the materials, the action, the way it goes in and out of the pocket .... You get the idea. I made it clear I never carried it and explained why. As a user y'all can decide if you agree or not. I also stated that my opinion is a minority opinion. The fact is that if I liked the knife, I would have carried it, and would have practiced thumb flicking it. But I didn't like it for the 15 reasons I gave, not just the one you are focused on, so I put the knife down and moved onto other knives that I think are far more superior and that I like more. However, it's ok if you like the knife and disagree. That is what makes the world go around and I'm ok if you like the knife and if you use your knifes as a screw driver or whatever. I cut open boxes and slice packaging with it, and they don't get all banged up. I carry and will use any knife I own if I like it. That's just the way it is. I have too many knives that I love carrying that i dont want to carry a knife that just doesn't speak to me, and for good reasons, all of which I listed. It's all good brother, and thank you for watching.
      I'm filming under a light and camera and above a table, and I am looking through the lense while filming to make sure it's in frame, so flicking space is very limited and awkward, so that is some of what you are seeing. It's not me being entirely spastic lol.
      I did a review on the Shaman and love it. It's in my top 2023 knives that I carry video and I did an unboxing, but I haven't done a dedicated full review on it yet. Just a heads up ... I love the Shaman.

      @@appalachianadvriderEDC tasks, for everyday carry tasks LOL… you don’t carry the Manix2.
      I thought the same you as you at first, then i bought one, then another and another. 6 Manix2’s later it is a FANTASTIC knife, great Blade shape.
      Arguably it functions better than Benchmade’s Axis.
      Carry it for a few days and then you’ll find you carrying it for Weeks.
      It bounces when you close cause you are slowly breaking it in, release the CBBC right before the blade closes and WahLah.
      Design is Perfect for what it is.

      @@sprinkleddonuts6094 understood. Like I said, most people love the knife, and it gets great reviews. I never "fell in love" with the knife, but I was very clear that I never gave it a chance. I think it's important for me to be honest in my opinions, and maybe if I carried it more than I would have liked it more. I'm giving the audience my opinion based on my preference. I have two Chris Reeves knives that never spoke to me, and I don't carry them either, but that doesn't mean someone else can't love them. I really appreciate you watching and commenting and enjoy all 6 of those Manix knives - nothing wrong with that.

    Sorry but I couldn’t help pointing out something. It’s not only the Byrd knives made in China. Spyderco branded more affordable knives like Tenacious, Persistence, Ambitious, Resilience, Grasshopper and others are also made there. Those production knives use a lower grade Chinese stainless, 8Cr13MoV, although there are limited runs in other steels. Newer Manix 2 knives also have skeletonized liners.

    I think you just need more experience with it man. I have some valid criticisms with that model myself (balance, weight, ball cage material, closed width, flat scales). However, if you release the lock before the blade closes, it won’t bounce out. If you keep any lock pressed, it won’t stay shut. Despite my criticisms, I certainly would recommend it. The LW version is my main edc. Not perfect but still fantastic

    • @appalachianadvrider
      @appalachianadvrider  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did say in the video if I practiced with it I would get better, but that's missing the point. The point is the knife didn't speak to me for many reasons, and I put it down, never to pick it up again. Compression locks bounce, but not as bad, and they don't bother me. I think it might be because you have to pull both tabs backwards hard and have a firm grip on it, verses just pushing down a lever like a compression lock. The action on those crossbar locks are so much better than what's on this knife IMHO. At the end of the day, if you add up everything I said about that knife that I didn't like (all 15 things or whatever the count was), it added up to me not liking that knife. I'm just giving people my honest opinion. If "you" want to hear how great that knife is you can watch a thousand videos confirming what "you" believe. I don't agree, and that's ok. People think I just need to keep carrying a knife that I don't like and that's not going to happen. I made it clear that I am in the minority here, and that's okay. There are way too many great choices out there, and I personally think this knife has a lot of hype around it, but that's just a minority opinion.
      I really appreciated you watching and the time you took to reply. Thanks again and keep on commenting like you have been in the past ... Keep me honest! And I like hearing other people's opinion, like you just gave me.

    I liked the first so much I got another and added awt scales but the titanium ones that keep the liners and added backspacer brought it to 5.9 ounces yet it feels so good . Then the awt s take it to 3.5 0unces and a totally different feel .

    • @appalachianadvrider
      @appalachianadvrider  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For me I love a knife in that 6 oz plus range, so that sounds like music to my ears. I thought about getting new scales for it, but then I got flashbacks about taking apart my Shaman, Para 3 and PM2 and I just couldn't bring myself to go for it lol. The good news is that there is no right opinion. My goal is to call out what I think and give you the context (like I like a heavy larger knife etc) so that you can decide for yourself if that sounds like something you would like. Knowing that you don't like the same things as the reviewer is just as valuable as watching a reviewer you agree with all the time. At least as a consumer of TH-cam knife reviews that is how I look at it.

    Seems like this is more knife than you can handle, or are willing to break in and learn it's idiosyncrasies. I understand not liking a knife after purchase. I can thumb flick, reverse flick, slow roll, and open with the ball cage. I did add an aluminum ball cage with ceramic ball, and custom matching Lynch clip. Operator error or idle approach to a knife does not warrant condemnation.

    • @appalachianadvrider

      I say all this in the video, so you are just repeating me. I think the knife is overrated, but again, I'm in the minority. But I do thank you for watching and commenting. Not every opinion about this knife has to be fantastic. There are plenty of videos out there that don't have one negative thing to say about this, or any other, knife. I wouldn't trust those reviewers if you ask me. Having said all that, it's a good knife. It was the first knife I did a lot of research on before I purchased it, and I just didn't fancy it, and that's ok. I'm glad you enjoy it and again, I appreciate your time in commenting. I really didn't condem it ... I said it has a lot of hype around it. I'm not aware of Spyderco using that ball bearings locking system on many other knives. Why is that do you think? I think the knife is just ok, but it just never really struck me as something that's so fantastic, and as a reviewer I've explained why.

    • @appalachianadvrider
      @appalachianadvrider  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lonestartaoboy be honest ... How was it taking that knife apart to change the ball bearing? I have taken apart three Spydercos so far (to change the scales) and they were all miserable experiences (Check my playlist for the videos). I hear that Manix is really bad, which is another reason why I wasn't so crazy about that knife. But even my favorite knives have something about them I don't like ... Even just one thing. Nothing is perfect. Thanks again for commenting and I love these convos about knives

    • @LonestarTaoboy

      I believe you are talking about the lightweight version, yes? Since September 2022 all of the lightweight models are screw construction. They can be disassembled and put back together like any other knife. Other than that it was not difficult at all.@@appalachianadvrider

    • @appalachianadvrider
      @appalachianadvrider  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LonestarTaoboy no I was referring to the G10 version. I didn't have the lightweight version. Between not being able to remove the lanyard tube, the red Loctite, the flying spring, the balancing act getting the spacer, spring, ball bearing and lock together so you can screw it back together ... It's just not the best experience vs. alternative designs. I saw one guy had a special tool to remove the lanyard tube .... So as a reviewer I say that there are much easier knives to disassemble and assemble. When I started to add up all the things that are just average to almost painful about the knife, I realized this knife is just ok. It gets a lot of hype, and like I said, I bought this knife because of the hype. It was my first knife purchase that I did a ton of research on before I purchased it, and I wanted to make a video of my experience. I'm positive I could have forced myself to carry it and play with it and like it a little bit more than I did, but at the end of the day, this is just not my kind of knife for all the reasons I mentioned. But it doesn't make the knife a bad knife. There are a ton of people that love this knife, including yourself, and I got mad respect for y'all. Heck, I love big bulky knives, and half of them suck as a slicer. But honestly, I like these conversations and I appreciate that we can be civil about our different opinions. I really want to thank you for watching and don't forget, please subscribe, because I'm giving it to you with 100% honesty, and there's value in listening to somebody that you don't agree with just as much as listening to somebody that you do agree with. I don't doubt it. As I said in the video, I never really liked the knife for many reasons, so I just never messed with it after I got disinterested - I say it several times in the video that I just didn't try enough. My point with that knife is that the ball bearing system is not the same as a detent ball, and you can fail a ball bearing system much easier than a detent ball. That's all I'm saying. You can get good enough with it that you would hardly ever fail it, just like with a detent ball. When I review anything, I'm giving you my perspective. I'm not a huge fan of that ball bearing system. I probably watched 50 reviews on that knife before I purchased it, and I just remember everybody talking about how great it was. And then I get it in and say to myself that it wasn't that good. It doesn't make the knife bad, but I'm just pointing out areas that are lacking, like how much it sucks to diassemble that knife. But I love talking about knives and I appreciate that you like it. I'm not upset if people don't agree with me ... I said it a couple times that I am the minority opinion and I know it. Thanks again for commenting and watching! I hope you see some value in my honesty regardless if we agree.

      I already didn't like the blade bounce or the way it could thumb flick fail, so I didn't want to tighten the pivot or loosen it. The knife never really spoke to me and I'm sure you have felt that with other knives in the past. And some knives speak to you, like this one did for you. There is nothing wrong with that. I just think there's some value to point out some of the things I pointed out. There's no point in putting out the same exact video is everyone else is doing, but I'm also not going to make stuff up just to be different.
