- In this video I’ll be doing some routine maintenance to my Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight. This includes disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and tuning. This is not a how to video, but hopefully through my trial and error you may learn something! Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
Thanks to @Idaho_Knife_Climb for the video suggestion.
Thanks to @metal_complex for the great blade centering technique! I’ve used this technique many times in the past and I’ve had great results. Check out his channel for detailed instructions.
If you have any suggestions on content you would like to see, drop a comment! I’m always looking for new content and edc gear to check out.
Thanks for watching!

Yours is the only video that I have found showing disassembly of the Manix 2 LW screw-together construction. This will definitely help when I upgrade my scales to the AWT aluminum 'skinny' scales. Thank you
I’m very interested in those as well. Glad it helped!
Well done! That "loosen then tighten" thing for the backspacer is definitely a pro move.
Its even more important when swapping blades. Probably 80% of issues people have with bladeswaps can be solved by doing that.
Thanks! It took some trial and error, but once I learned that, tuning got a whole lot easier. Thanks for watching!
I got one in magnacut and rit dyed the scales somewhere between army green and olive drab green with a slight pearlesnce to it. I didn't disassemble it because I tend to lose parts but because its a salt version it didn't hurt a thing.
Would love to pick up a salt version. Thanks for sharing!
Nicely done
Thanks!
For stropping the washers, I got better and more consistent results by doing a figure 8. I also start off on green compound and finish off on 1 micron diamond emulsion.
Awesome, I’ll give that a shot. Thanks!
Thanks for this very well done video . I just bought my Manix 2 (the same one as you have here) a few weeks ago and this is a HUGE help . I have no problem taking small things apart and putting them back together again , but the tips you show are super helpful .
Thank you, I’m glad it helped you out!
Very helpful. I just picked up this knife in CPM m4.
Glad it helped, great choice!
I don't lubricate my knives anymore. The lube attracts dust, dirt, and lint. That's what fouls the action. Todays bearings or phosphor bronze washers provide enough glide to dispense with the oils. When my knife is acting slow, I simply blow some compressed air in there and I'm back to new.
It’s definitely important to keep dust and dirt in mind! I use minimal lube if I know that’s going to be an issue. And that’s very true about the materials, phosphor bronze has natural lubricity, so it’s not crucial to have a lot anyway. Thanks for the comment!
Im at 8 or 9 sets of AWT on Spyderco, but with the LW Manix, i feel like Sal and Eric need to call them for an official factory collabo. Its really amazing. I thought the Native 5 was cool, this is the one.
Not a bad idea! I’m looking at getting a set for mine, it looks incredible and would make it an even more solid knife!
The only knives that I've adjusted was my Kaiser Escort Omega pins Drop Bear this year's model nothing more
Note to self if i buy this never open lol your a brave man great job ...soap and warm water is always your friend 😅😊
Haha It can be a little nerve racking, but you’d get through it! Thanks!
@@The_commonman yes haven't been able to not open a new knife yet lol
Basswood works great with gunny juice.
I’ll check those out, thanks!
Blade HQ has a promo with Spyderco. Buy a knife and get a Spyderco mat.
Might have to buy a knife now.. lol
I just got my Manix with the mat and duck patch
Thanks for being the Guinea pig! I’ve yet to buy the LW version. I’ve put a ceramic bearing and lighter spring in my G10 so I’m wondering if they’re the same. Have you had a chance to compare?
I haven’t yet, but I’m planning on swapping to a titanium cage on my G10, I’ll upload a video when I do!
👍🏼👍🏼
The only thing I've done to my EDC are adjust the Omega springs I wouldn't dare to do anything else I just got into Spyderco I got the Endurance 3 and the Rock Jock getting used to the weight it would have been nice if they came in G10
About to do this to die my yellow magnacut scales
Awesome, I’m interested in how that turns out!
You don't necessarily have to take the knife apart to dye it, especially on the magnacut version. You can just hold onto the blade and swirl the handle in the dye and get the same results 👍🏻 hope that helped at least a lil bit
I think those captive washers prevent the bronze washers from wearing on the plastic scales !!!
Yes, it’s a great design!
Yes....they can't spin!!!@@The_commonman
My pocket clip rivets are spinning with the screws, how do I stop this? Yours seems to just loosen.
I didn’t have that issue, and having not removed the pin, I can’t say if it’s supposed to be held in place (without spinning) or not. The only thing I can think of, is to see if you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to hold the pin end, unfortunately this may scrape up the pin. I hope that helps!
Same thing here! They must have tightened the ever living crap out of them and slathered loctite onto some. I'm debating what to try..... another video I saw the maker had to dremel a slot into the smooth capture side of his. 😬🤨
@@gregmccormack5709 I ended up snapping the scales, completely destroying them. Good thing I was putting on new scales, would definitely need a dremel if not.
How much wear does the detent ball cause on the tang of the blade ?
There’s a light mark on the blade, but no noticeable wear
@@The_commonman thanks
where did you get this from? is it the cheapest version 2 of the LW?
I got this from a small shop in Maryland, Willey Knives. I paid slightly over normal price, which is often the case when buying from a brick and mortar store. This is the most basic version of the revised Manix 2 LW, it seems like just about all retailers are now selling this updated version, for right around $130-140
@@The_commonman weird, i guess m4 at bladehq at 134 is a steal then. i've only seen that knife in super steels
I would of taped that blade so you don't cut your self.
Not a bad idea!
😮 don’t give up.
Do your best to try to understand how my chemical things work
