Black Sabbath - Tony Iommi Live Guitar Solo (my personal favorite)

  • Tony Iommi's Guitar Solo from the Boston 8/9/92 show. This is my personal favorite of all his guitar solos, because it is chalk full of riffs. Here's a breakdown of the solo.
    - Die Young Intro Solo (now used as the intro to the song, which here he actually plays after the 2 min snippet of Die Young, as it was never played in full during the tour)
    - His famous 'Jazz' solo
    - Riffs from "Warning"
    - That riff you sometimes hear in the Sabbra Cadabra (reprise) when it was played in the 70s.
    - The riff to "Cross of Thorns" (which wasn't made until a song until the next album)
    - The Sabbath Bloody Sabbath riff
    - Some other interesting riffs (one sounds like "Brighton Rock")
    - and finally "Orchid"
after this he went into the intro to 'Black Sabbath', but this isn't on here due to time limit.
I have a couple Sabbath related interviews to post as well as a clip with Bill Ward hearing "WICD" for the first time, and an brief interview with him. These should be coming sometime this week or next.
    Enjoy!

Tony Iommi took his first guitar lesson when he was 5. When the teacher saw him, he said : “I can’t believe it ! You are Tony Iommi !”. Tony showed him how to play 'N.I.B.'.

How can anyone hate this tone? It's unmistakably Tony Iommi. He has the tone that, even if you can't see who is playing, and even if you only caught a few seconds of playing time, you could easily recognize it as Iommi. His tone is every bit as important to his playing as the notes he produces. Great post!

Listen to the song "You Wont Change Me " one of many solos- Tony is playing so fast doing Hammer On's sliding from the E String To B string without lifting his finger off the fretboard- speed of light one of many quick "Hammer on's thanks to the leather grip strip on his finger protector. I was in the studio when I asked him to lay down his speed of light Trills on that track & he did it. The 2nd Solo is killer.

There can be no doubt King Tony can do it all, I can honestly say his accident was a blessing in disguise. I can't imagine had his talent been wasted in Jethrol Tull. Although also a great band in there own right, im sure Tony's talent would have been lost and never explored had he remained with Tull.

I'm not much of a gearhead, but Iommi has used a tycobrahe wah pedal since the mid to late 70s. I think he said once in a magazine article that the guy who made them didn't make many and went out of business or died or something. Iommi says he has like 8 of them, in case one goes to shit. It's one of the few effects he uses.

It was Tony Iommi‘s solo that turned me on to jazz! It was back in the 80s it may have been a different concert but he was playing through the same Riffs that’s on this recording. I was learning to play guitar and I was highly influenced by who I was listening to at the time.

I would like to see "animusic" illustrate this whole thing! Iommi is an insane (in a good way said) guitar player. All of his music influence from jazz, blues etc. converted into the most scary deep dark heavy metal sound, who marked for life many musicians to come, and turn them into different kinds of metal genres. There wouldn't be no death metal if that press took his whole hand!! Just thanks for this video. RESPECT to Tony Iommi

Tony is a old school in that he still knows how to play chords but also can throw in the vicious lead! Not many new bands can still say they have a bass, drum, vocal and guitar. As far as new stuff I like Rival Sons because they still keep that intact! Beautiful light and shade if I might quote Jimmy Page!

I think this is just one of those solos you do in your room at 2am when you're bored, and everything clicks. brain shuts off and the fingers express all the emotion they need. I'm sure he has some sort of structure, but this kind of solo you'll never play by knowing what key or scale he's in, it's all in the heart and in the hands mann.
or maybe he's just playing e minor blues idk im stoned

From all the clips heard from the 1992 Dehumanizer Tour, this Guitar Solo was Tony's best and longest! The JAM portion, which was performed at several shows, was one the best parts! This Boston, MA show, from the Orpheum Theatre, was one of the best shows captured from WBCN FM Broadcast! Cool bootlegs made of this show! The Definitive Boston 1992 (4 CD set ) was the best sounding!

And to Justdave1969: What is that ambient noise at the beginning then before he even starts soloing? Or what is that noise that is doubling Tony's guitar over the "Cross of Thorns" riff in the solo, or the noise doubling the SBS riff? I'll be damned if it's not a keyboard...
