I noticed only 2 big benefits. First question that comes to mind is why not just shoot wider with a wider lens. Answer is pretty simple. Say you are shooting a closeup at 135mm and really like the compression and everything else that makes the look, but you would want a wider frame at the same compression and perspective. That’s where anamorphic comes to the rescue. Shooting at 135mm anamorphic gives the same compression and perspective of 135mm at a much wider field of view (lets say at 60mm, not doing the math here). Thus, a 60mm normal lens vs a 135mm anamorphic will be 2 different worlds. 2nd. The bokeh and flare. Bokeh’s more vertical. As with bokeh science, if you use any shape gobo made of paper or cardboard in front of your lens, your bokeh will turn into that shape. Pretty self explanatory where the vertical bokeh comes from when you look at the shape of the lens elements, or opening or whatever you choose to call it (just look through the lens). As for the flare, the flare is horizontal. It changes the look from a normal lens. Normal lenses can have various shaped flares but mostly they are either round or oval. However, the flare on an anamorphic lens is a look in itself. P.S.: these were the conclusions i came up with from this video. If something is wrong, please correct it. If you know more, please mention below in a comment so I and others like me can gain some more knowledge about these lenses. Thank you for reading this.
I am not sure I understand. What is the difference between anamorphic and ultra wide angle cropped to same aspect ratio? Anamorphic stretches image to the sides, so people look stretched and smaller? Could this effect be simulated digitally on a wide angle of same field of view?
@@Driftstar217 I did a little bit of reasearch so I might actually answer :-) What it does is basically compress wider view onto standard film frame. Then it could be projected to a movie screen back with the same principle. Back in the analog film days it was probably much easier than to develop wide film etc. So yes, when you use ultra wide lense and crop it in post the result is the same from the angle of view perspective. There is different flare and bohek as you mention.
I used the sankor setup. Sold it cause double focus is not worth it. Also TH-cam takes features away from videos not uploaded in 16:9. So if you upload in the anamorphic format you will lose like end cards, ads, that sorta stuff.

Remember grasping the side of the chair when the aircraft went over the cliff. I think I am going to expore anamorphic!!!
Question: can you use a normal autofocus lens on an anamorphic lens? Secondly, does a 35mm AF lens on an anamorphic 50 make it 85mm?? What does the 50 mean?
Great knowledge about where to start with anamorphic lenses and yes I'm very interested in shooting anamorphic. Thanks so much, Mathieu for taking me along on this journey of everything I need to know about anamorphic lenses. Tito Ferradans thanks for your time and immense knowledge about these lenses.

Lets see if they do Canon EF as well. Wonder why they haven't done that anyway saying that as a none Canon user. Me -> Black Magic.
I've honestly never been sold on anamorphic lenses. I think it's the aspect ratio that throws me off the most. I think the benefits are only truly enjoyable if you watch on the big screen or in full screen mode on a nice laptop. The anamorphic aspect ratio is counter productive to the aspect ratio of a phone, and I think that's not so great for TH-camrs when 99% of viewers watch from their phone. I do like the lens flares though!
I thought true anamorphic, well CinemaScope anyway, can only be produced on a 4:3 sensor aspect ratio like a gh5, and not a 16:9 . I tried this setup and was confused as to why the footage is so thin on the short side. Then I realized that extra bit of height on a 4:3 aspect sensor gives the right result. Ya can’t go full 2.39:1 with a 16:9 sensor output.

Thanks shawn ! i think it's the Feelworld Master MA6
