I've been doing street photograpy for over a year now and I honestly it feels exactly like you mentioned. The excitement and confidence you need. The eye to catch that one moment. The stroies and ofcourse all the people. It is such a beautiful and fulfiling form of art. I want to continue and grow and hopefully bring more stories of ordinary people on the streets to light.

i was struggling with a creatively block, trying to edit a film i’ve been working on for so long.. i was so overwhelmed with music, sfx, color grading fancy speed ramping transitions.. i was taking a break and noticed this video in my notifications i said why not clear my mind.. and this video was therapy for me.. it’s not about photography or film or exposure. it’s the fact that the video is soooo relaxing , not thinking about anything just peter talking about how he experienced the very first form of photography after years of shooting digital. it shows how he matured into the artist he is today and that’s really really inspiring seeing him go from the guy vlogging in an airport with a 1dx ii to someone who simply uses a small camera and 3 rolls of film and makes a whole video talking about how he feels towards his new hobby, far far away from the technical stuff, composition…

Gotta say, Pete -- I've really been loving these film videos. They're truly my favorite videos you've posted in a long time. I also jumped back in -- all in -- to film about 5 months ago, and you so accurately describe what it feels like, and to see this kind of excitement from someone with such an immense body of work like your own is refreshing. The intention and the anticipation is everything, and makes the craft of making a photograph so much more enjoyable.

Wow. I used to watch pm videos all the time. It’s been about 3 ish years since I’ve watched one of his videos. When he was heavily into digital, I was new to the more professional side of photography and was heavily more into the film side of photography. I to this day believe to be a true photographer through n through, you need to know the history of photography and learn how to shoot film. Learn how to plan your photos and everything. Then you can fully respect photography and where we came from. Then you have more of a passion for it. It makes you a better photographer. I love that I randomly came back to a pm video and the first thing I see is that he has switched back to a film camera and using the knowledge he has now to do even better than he did at 22, while forcing yourself to slow down and enjoy the true meaning of photography. There’s such a huge reward in developing your own film if you can and the waiting process too.

i just started shooting on film. and i totally fell in love!! I love the grain, the unperfection, the character, the life and the story behind a picture! its so different than all my thousands of smartphone pictures. my next step is to develop for my own. the lab is pretty expensive and right now i have to wait til 1 month!! i'm obviously not the only one with this new old hobby, haha!

Film photography can take you down so many interesting paths. You can get deep in to developing your own color and black and white film, trying caffenol, darkroom printing, alternative printing processes. Large format film, tintypes... the list goes on.

I started shooting on film in 2nd grade in the mid 60’s, welcome to the world of keeping it simple and getting it right without the benefit of automatic bracketing or the rapid fire equivalent of having a very expensive motor drive.
I often suggest that those totally new to photography start learning with pre digital era books on photography, learning, understanding and mastering the basics, since DSLRs give newbies not only many ways to get confused, but IMO way more ways to screw up an image than a SLR ever could… unless you did something dumb like forget to set the ISO or open the camera back before rewinding the film. lol, I just reached the part in this vid where you did exactly that.
I really enjoy your channel, you provide a very entertaining way of presenting all that stuff I need to know to master present day photography tech. After all, back in the day, to truly be a photographer, one had to master the art of darkroom science, as well as pushing, dodging and burning. In some ways, the tech took the fun and reward out of the results.
edit: today everyone basically has a camera, in the shoot on film days, it was not common at all.

This is just a silly little thing, but one thing I've picked up in my traveling with gear is the realization that I'm never going to use a whole roll of tape for something - if you take a run of tape (even if it's waaay more than you think you'll need) and just roll it up solo with no core, or around a sharpie/pen you're also packing, it saves even more space!

So. Much. This. I've immersed myself in what I consider to be the top in their genre. (PM included 😁) and I've just been watching, and taking images of my own to practice the LR/PS techniques, trying to make them somehow my own. Been working on my compositions too. Making them tell more of a story. Making them breathe with life, I am developing (hehe) a new type of relationship with my subjects. (none of which, speak)
Youve upped the game in 2023, man. Your work is maturing. Your style is evolving. I for one, love it. It's massively inspiring to folks like me, to see someone of Peter McKinnon's caliber can still be learning. Thanks, man. I appreciate you.

Pete, just a little tip on how not to be shy about approaching people to take pictures: When I want to photograph a stranger, I find something about their appearance that I like and compliment them beforehand and then ask permission to take their picture.
"Sir, you look very manly, excuse me, can I get a picture of you on camera? "
"Hey girl, you have a very nice manicure. Can I take a picture of you with your hands in the frame? Don't think anything bad, I have a girlfriend and I'm just a photographer)"
When you give people something sincere and pleasant, you become more confident📸✊🏻
    I hope this helps😉
