Stock 3dr Solo OpenSolo 2 5 RC1 SidePilot Install

- This is just to document my first attempt at loading OpenSolo onto my stock 3dr solo quadcopter using the SidePilot iOS app. It worked flawlessly except for a few minor hiccups caused by me!
Thanks again to Tom Brereton for his great SidePilot app and also thanks to Matt Lawrence for his OpenSolo Build and his instructional video which I will link below. Also big thanks to 3dr for releasing the source code and anyone else who is working on the OpenSolo project to keep Solo working to its full potential!

Open Solo version 4.0. All installed and works great w/ SidePilot onto a never flown stock 3dr..
How did you pull that off? It only updated the controller for me.
Do you need to factory reset this in order to get Wi-Fi on controller? Mine will not recognize any Wi-Fi
Hello, I’m hoping you see this! When I open side pilot and I click the little connect dot top right, it’s not connecting to the solo for some reason. I factory reset my solo so I need to update it to get it flying again. Any ideas would be great!

Are you knowledgeable about this drone? If so I got two that I installed the open solo 4.0 and they work perfectly but I got two other ones that I did the same thing on and they fully loaded up and only thing is the controller says Compass error but on solex app the calibrated icon is not lit up so I can choose the Calibration feature! Any Help is Greatly Appreciated!

Hi There, for some reason I don't see anything under Solo firmware upgrade and I have just factory rested the Solo, any ideas why? Am I doing something wrong?
If your phone or tablet is connected to solo WiFi and it doesn’t have cellular connection that could be the issue. You have to connect to your regular home WiFi to download the update files before connecting to your solo if the device doesn’t have cellular. Hope that helps😊

How is it that the Android Solex app can use a Wifi-only tablet (my Shield K1) to install it? There's got to be a way since it is already downloaded to the device.
I spoke to Tom and his next update to SidePilot will fix that!👍. So keep an eye out for Ver 1.30 which should be out any day now!!!😎
Hello sir thank you for the video I just recently got my solo and the SidePilot app I seen the new update and now when I go to the firmware update on the app it says open solo clean but not 2.5 is it still safe to perform the installation thanks in advance
Antonio Espindola yes it is still safe....it is OpenSolo 2.5-RC2 but Matt seems to have changed the naming

Ok so what's the point to this? Does it ad features we don't know about?
So the 3dr solo is no longer supported by manufacturer and they didn't renew the licensing so if you do a factory reset it won't be able to get needed files to work so a couple of independent people worked on solutions and here's one that worked. I personally used solex but side pilot looks like a good alternative as well.
Steve I know you said that you haven’t used sidepilot, but is this video the same tutorial for the new open solo software?

Brian Lastname Besides the obvious that there will be continued development from the open source community whereas 3dr has stoped development. The main reason in my opinion is stock solo needs 3dr servers for a full reload of the software and who knows how long they will leave them active. This makes a full software reload self contained no server necessary. So if all goes to hell with your settings and you want to start from scratch you can do it no worries!👍😊
John Maugeri Ahh, makes sense now. Do you recommend the green cube as well? I asked about how the green cube on 3DRPilots and all i was told is "it takes Solo from Yugo to Corvette" but that doesn't really tell me much. Thanks
I have not made the green cube plunge myself. Lack of funds! Lol! Might do it eventually or maybe not as these birds fly pretty damn great just the way they are imho! But yes I know green cube has better sensors and is just all around better so that yugo to corvette analogy is probably accurate as far as handling and responsiveness goes! I guess it depends on what you are doing with your solo!😊
Too bad this doesn't work. It only updates the controller. The bird it turns into a brick
