- Video showing how to upgrade the GPS on a 3DR Solo Quadcoper, along with a few 3D printed part additions. Similar 3D models can be found on the web, but I decided to make my own Leg Extensions and Gimbal holder, as I wasn't happy with the ones I found. Just to add confirmation to a GREAT GPS upgrade from MRO... I installed mine and now receive 25 sats @ .5 HDOP. in ~2 min. I live in the Houston area not sure if this geographical location has anything to do with it, but I'm happy with this newest, MODIFICATION.

hello, great video. my solo Flys amazing. my question is when I fly from a cliff side and send the solo below the altitude shown on controller it's OK to drop below take off altitude.? thanks for posting.
I would remove the green piece for the GPS. Why add another layer of something between it and the sky? I hear people are seeing like 20 sat's with this GPS. Kinda expected you'd see the same in the middle of Utah. I get my mRo GPS in a few days and hope to improve my GPS count.
You mentioned getting the files off of line can you tell us where you got the and what model 3 D printer did you use. I would like to build the plastic parts you have. I know 3D printers have really come down and just wondering which Monel you used and where can I get the files thank you
The parts are all on Thingiverse, but be aware I modified 2 of the 3 files pretty heavily. Initially printed on a Monoprice Mini, but sold it. Recently purchased and assembled an Original Prusa i3 MK2, and now print on that.
just curious why everyone picks lime green for the leg extensions,, is black not avail in 3d printing??

A great video I had a question I have a 3dr solo drone same as the one in the video. It's stuck on the pre-flight update, drone factory reset, not connecting to the app, is there any way you can help?
I haven't experienced that particular issue, but there are a few active 3DR Solo Facebook groups that can help.
Bey man, id like to ask you a few questions. I just bought my 3dr used and im happy with it. But i like to fix things up so id like to know more about the parts you have available. Do you have to reprogram after installing the gps mod?
Stuart Mccuaig, nope! The mRo GPS upgrade is plug-n-play. Pretty easy, and instantly get better results once installed.

How did it fly with the GPS upgrades? I was interested in how the upgrade affects cable cam and other smart shots.
wooskie29 No issues to report. Flies great with both the stock 3DR app and also SOLEX.
hi any video on how to put the isolation plate on the rev A/B thank you and can we ues the gimble lock with out the Gopro camera thank you great items
Manuel Vargas, Rev A/B Isolation Plate install method is the same as shown in this video. This particular gimbal lock design will only work with the GoPro nested in the gimbal.

..i see no option for the Hero 4 Silver Gimbal Lock. Is it the same as the Hero 4 Black?
Yes, the Gimbal Lock for Hero 4 Silver/Black are the same. Only the Hero 3 is different as it requires balance weights.
So is this plug and play?? no changes within solo computer needed??
mrreddog, Yes "Plug and Play" it is. Once installed, there is nothing more you need to do to start flying again.

Coach K, I have seen a few examples of Tarot gimbals on a Solo to control Flir cameras, but it seemed there was a lot of modding involved and little support from the forum community on the subject.

can u tell me why my solo keeps losing signal i send it out about 50 to 60ft an it lost signal and comes back home i tryed the apa antennas i get the same thing.
Eugene Williams haven't experienced that myself, so can't help here. Try the 3DR Solo Owners Facebook group. Lots of good stuff there, and people willing to help troubleshoot.

Hydrojunky, The upgraded GPS Module and GPS Shields were separate purchases. The rest of the parts shown came from my 3D Printer.

To remove the GPS Shields dont pull the sides out at all. Use your thumb and middle finger to press in the sides of the GPS Shield to make the top bow up a little bit then wriggle it sideways and she comes straight off. If your fingers are slippery then wipe the side of the shield with a paper towel and wipe your hands to. Go practise!

Jon Car The GPS plate is good as is with the mRobotics upgrade. I had to redesign the gimbal lock as that one is made to work with the balancing weights. I use a Hero 4 black, so don't need the weights, and that lock kept popping off. Also redesigned the leg extensions as those ones don't stay open very well. Added a locking mechanism to keep them open better.

I have seen various spare parts on eBay. I few others (including me) have purchased a 2nd Solo kit when they went as low as $300, with the intention of using for parts if needed.
Hopefully we will see a company making part's soon..., can't stop flying this model . It's amazing
B&H Photo Video has most of the parts (new).
Solopartsdepot.com has many good used parts.
Spare parts Solos are available on eBay for under $60.
